Definitely the quiet (and nice) man of the group and the unsung hero. Prior to The Wall Rick was the soul and sound of Pink Floyd and I get the impression that Roger was irritated by Ricks quiet demeanour and deeply jealous of his enormous talent which always caused friction. So I would say that Nick Mason was the glue that held them together as long as they did.

Yes I agree. It appears they only noticed Rick's contributions after he had been disposed of.
Rick is my absolutely favorite member of Pink Floyd. I love his ingenuity with his keyboards, which also made me inspired to dive more on more keyboards.

I was in Florida in the mid 70's wearing a new Wish You Were Here T-shirt. I was standing by the road and a convertable Jaguar car came by. The dude driving it was pointing at my shirt and almost standing up so I would see him. As the car went by I said to my friend next to me, "what was that guy pointing at us for?" My friend said "at your shirt". So we went inside and I pulled out the Meddle album to see the 4 Pink Floyd members inside and we both pointed to Richard Wright. It was him, no doubt. What is even weirder is in the 90's I was in a band that played many of the Pink Floyd albums in their entirety. I was the keyboardist in that band.
What a Great Man he was. Remember a Day is a masterpiece.
Since i was a kid in the 70's and to this day he influences my piano playing and keys more than anyone.
Rick's playing on the wish you were here album is out of this world

When people say the “Pink Floyd” sound. Richard Wright was that sound. His work on organ, piano and keyboards are some of the most beautiful arrangements I’ve had the pleasure to listen to. RIP

Glad to have seen Rick in concert back in 1987. Waters, Gilmour, Wright and Mason's contributions to PInk Floyd are essential to the Pink Floyd sound. Waters wasn't at that concert in 1987, but I did see Waters in 2017. It was important to me to see all 4 guys since I think they all mattered to what I appreciate as Pink Floyd. Both 1987 and 2017 shows were wonderful and I enjoyed every minute.
Wright is the most underrated musician in the history of prog Rock
But I consider Pink Floyd more avant-garde music, and they will only that because of Wright!

I love the song he did on Gilmour's On an Island album, especially the bit describing the worst of his drug addiction and marriage breakdown, straying from the house under the cover of dark and slunking back in daylight hours to face the music, as it was..
I initially disliked Identity, but years after i can appreciate it. It has the seeds of what will later be Broken China. Even if its sounds are deeply dated into the 80s, it deserves to be listened.
He was my favorite, the glue that bonded the quartet.
Man I can't see how in the world he worked with Gilmour and Waters in between nephew they had going on there ain't no wonder that he left but the songwriting the amazing Oregon work him and Richard Wright they don't get the credit today all to get from Pink Floyd but they were a part of Pink Floyd too they were awesome

Some of Gilmour's best guitar solos would have been a lot less great without Rick's Hammond organ behind them.

IMO, Rick was the embodiment of the Pink Floyd sound. Without Rick, the entire sound of PF would have been very different and likely very shitty.
Wright should have fired Waters. Waters lyrics focusing on “descent into madness” would have been easier to replace than Rick’s keyboards.
Are you crazy ? Waters made the best pink Floyd albuns , and Wright was doing nothing but getting is money in same proportions..... Animals and The Wall are pure art created by Waters
His decline in Floyd output coincided with their creative decline. Wish he’d made some nice tech house.

Genius! Very under-rated - the sound of Floyd would have certainly not have been the same. He was the bedrock of the band upon which they rested. THE FINAL CUT by the way in my estimation was the worst FLOYD album
I don't even consider it to be Pink Floyd.
It's just Roger's whinging & moaning session about how his life isn't as wonderful as he'd hoped.
How did Waters have the contractual authority to fire a founding member of the band? It's obvious that it was a total dick move by a total dick, but how did it stand the legal test?
Quit or fired? That is a common question in employment. Many fans say that Richard Wright, fed up with Roger Waters' bossiness, quit the band and was asked later to come back as a hired hand.
I may be wrong about this but it was a series of factors. The band invested their 70s royalties money with a firm that essentially scammed and stole from them. So they were left without those royalties and were also faced with the heavy taxes on those royalties. So going into The Wall they were literally against the wall; if it didn't recoup big time Pink Floyd was bankrupt and done. Nick Mason at that time was only really interested in racing cars, Gilmour was working on his solo material and self-titled album, and Wright was dealing with addiction and in the depths of a messy divorce. Roger Waters was the only member who really had something with the fleshed out demo of The Wall and what would become The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. The band collectively chose The Wall concept and Waters basically held the rest of the band hostage; it was all his lyrics and ideas and if they didn't do what he wanted he would keep The Wall for himself and let Pink Floyd die. Then Waters focused most of his rage at Wright saying he contributed nothing and forced the hands of Mason and Gilmour into kicking Wright out of the band. Rick was pretty meek and didn't like conflict so he withdrew as a full member but kept on as a session musician to let Pink Floyd continue.

Seems like he was tested pretty poorly by Roger Waters circa late 70’s. Funny though that he was actually made money as a hired sideman on the Wall tour while the rest of the band lost money on that outing

pink floyd would have NEVER became and did what they did, without rick,,,,,,oh sure, there would have been A band, but it wouldnt have been what it was,,, same is true for the others, dave, nick, rog, they, together was a tight, perfect formula, any missing piece would have doomed what did happen, the stars were in perfect alignment for this phenomenon to happen, they were not, a band, not a genre, not a style, they were a phenomenon never to be duplicated, i never knew rick played all those other instruments

If it wasn't for Rick Wrights ethereal keyboard sounds I personally don't think Pink Floyd would have lasted into the seventies. Dave Gilmore is a great guitarist but for the first eighteen months or so after joining Floyd, with the odd exceptions, you don't really hear him doing much in the way of solos. Ricks contributions to Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here and Animals speak for themselves. Rick would often play down his contributions to the band, particularly his early song writing, referring to songs like See Saw and Remember a Day as boring and rubbish. I personally don't agree with that, they were no worse than many other songs both by Floyd and their contemporaries at the time and better than some. I didn't realise that Rick was such a multi instrumentalist. Truly talented guy.
Meanwhile,Seesaw is one of my top5 favourite Floyd songs ever. Very humble guy,Rick, that's what I liked most about him.

Rick did never had a single EGO problem ,very solid and calm on his feet !!! When Syd did leaves ,Rick hold thé band with many songs in Syd 's style and his voice was perfect .thé most HE was thé sound of Pink Floyd right to " dark side" ...
They wouldn’t have lasted without Rick when Syd left
I believe that his keyboard work is the sound of Pink Floyd, sure there are tracks where David Gilmour’s guitar playing is the crucial element and Pink Floyd would be less powerful without the lyrics of Waters but the thing that differentiates them from other bands is the keyboards of Wright.
Once watched a documentary on Pink Floyd's music. Guy presenting commented on Rick Wright's input, quoted 'Wright was PF secret weapon.' I 100% agree.

His keyboard work on the 70's albums is largely why I play synths today. His synth solo on Dogs is a masterpiece, how he was able to evoke so much emotion and atmosphere out of an electric keyboard instrument. It goes for all his playing. He seemed a lovely man as well. RIP.
On Animals, were the dog barks, pig grunts, and sheep baaah sounds done by Wright or tape samples?
Rick was highly underrated and, although he wasn't to the level of Keith Emerson, he had a style which was a perfect mixture of jazz, blues, and psychedelic which fit Pink Floyd perfectly.
One of my 3 top favourite PF songs is 'Any Colour You Like.'
This song connects to my soul like few others.
'See Saw is another remarkable, gorgeous moody song that I absolutely love.
When Roger sacked Rick during The Wall sessions, it really angered me.
That was the point I started turning against Roger.
I see a huge chasm between Rick and Roger.
Rick was a very gentle, beautiful person; Roger is a very ugly, nasty one.
Too bad we don't have Rick with us anymore, but we do have Roger.
Just be aware it's not the done thing to compare an artist with another, both really were ensconced in different genres, both gifted and both masters of their craft, too many people today compare and also make lists of whos better which is rather foolish ! apart from that i agree with the majority of your comments.
I totally agree with most of your comment but Richard Wright and Keith Emerson are incomparable, a little like comparing Zainadine Zidane with Pele or Maradona. Like Pele and Maradona, Keith was a showman often making the simple look spectacular. Wright was like Zidane, also a master of his craft who just played in a workman like fashion often making the spectacular look easy. Very different characters but all enormously talented and beyond comparison.
Quietly and singlehandedly, Rick formed the ambience of Pink Floyd's music.
Rick was easily the most important member of Pink Floyd, as David Gilmour says no Rick no Floyd.
Wright was a great. I loved Remember a Day. Also loved Stay.

06-23-24 ... As musicians and performers, I love them all. Since the 'real' split, I like Roger's work more than Gilmore's but I feel 'we' all benefited as new music comes from both sources. As a 'Showman', I think Roger is great. As a musician Gilmore is one of the best. With this story of Richard Wright, I now further appreciate Richard Wright ... As for All time, ... Pink Floyd is my Runaway favorite. Cudo's goes to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and I wish they as much material as Pink Floyd. Music is a wonderful gift, and I enjoyed PF oh so much for oh so long ...

Early 70's idid remenber i was in music school learning piano ,and PF was one band of the pop scene respected mostly for the colors and plays of Rick Wright ...Classicals teachers used to say about pop musicians " not serious" ,and Rick was on the serious side !!!

Rick Wright plays trombone (and quite expertly) on the PINK FLOYD track called "Bidding My Time" from the RELICS album. You can glimpse his jazz influences there but his abilities go far beyond it. His use of chromatic and atonal music in Rock is unequaled anywhere!
