The progression of this sarabande is my favorite progression of all time. I believe it's based on La Folia, as the melody and general arc of the theme are very similar. But the progression, where the first A7 resolves (through mediant resolution) to F sounds so powerful. I even based some of my own composition on this very sarabande because I can't stop enjoying the power that it captures.
It even caused me to use the same resolution in some of my own music. It's one of those rare progressions you don't really hear a lot due to (my personal belief) that when harmonic theory was codified this progression didn't appear enough.
For any music theory nerds out there: all of the notes resolve in a very interesting way. The A is a shared note between A7 and F. The C#, which is normally the leading tone moving to D, now moves to C. The E instead is the leading tone which resolves to F. The G, just as normal resolves to F.
The A7 - F resolution is in a way the mirror image of the C7 - Dm resolution, where the C7 resolves to the parallel minor (Dm instead of F), The A7 resolves to the parallel major (F instead of Dm)
Check out Vivaldi variations of La Folia.. It's totally similar to this piece

moonlight sonata has much better chords than this. the best chord progressions are chain modulations, this one modulates once, then only tonicize Gm. mozart's requiem has a nice progression in the start, and vivaldi's winter beginning, chain modulation. another one is scarface film's theme.

@@estring123 Well I wouldn't say Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue BWV 582 (the passacaglia to be more specific) is boring, because harmony isn't what makes a piece interesting or not, but what you put over it. In a theme and variation, the harmony is the foundation, so rating this piece based on its harmony is completely missing the point
