Yayyyyy, I was so waiting for a new video and wow it was so worth to wait, what a stunning sculpture again. A very good idea, a fallen hawk so much feelings go to it and I love it. I did love too when you started oiling on the eye so its like it gave a feeling to the sculpture and it is saying; I am fallen. Stunning artist you are and love all your videos.

As for your next project: I would love to see a mischievous or playful raccoon :)

An idea: I would love to see you do a large, multiple carving piece. You could go over the design and choose characters or sculptures that fit together to create one big scene. You can do a video for each section (each separate sculpture) and the process of carving them to fit together. You could even design and carve a large background setting for them to all attach to.
Other commenters, comment what kinds of scenes or themes or animals/creatures you would like to see ?

In my minor attempts at sculpting wood I'm blown away with your talents. While watching your video I had an idea of a group sculpture of a squirrel, chipmunk, and some mice holding up an object, probably a sign for your studio. Possibly also they could be perched on a branch that holds your sign below it.

After watching a few of your videos I am getting motivated to finish a project that I started almost 20 years ago. My father-in-law gave me a block of walnut from a tree he had milled after taking it down and it was stored in his garage for 30 years. I carved a lion laying with a lamb to the point where it is time for the finer details and the wood was so hard that my cheap tools were breaking and I was afraid I would ruin it. But now I have a dremel and I am convinced it is the way to go instead of simple hand tools. Wish me luck! You do incredible work and you have inspired me to make a go at it! 🙏❤️

    • @Jonasolsenwoodcraft
      @Jonasolsenwoodcraft  10 месяцев назад +1

Good luck! By the way i think hand tools work well also, But they have to be supersharp! The bits from Saburrtooth seem to help me a lot in combination with diamond burr bits for the final finish. When i use the diamond burrs i run the at low speed to not burn the wood.

Hello Jonas, Tor here. I have been working with wood for a while, and I say you don't despair on the cracks. They are so much a part of the material, and you incorporating them in your work I think splendid. Now, have you ever considered filling them? There are lots of different fillers on the market, or you can fill with woodstrips from the same log, with a matching grain and then eventually tone it to blend perfectly in. Maybe even consider bow-ties to keep your cracks from expanding. Watch some furniture-restoring videos of Thomas Johnson, maybe it could help you. Love.

Hello and thank you for the kind words! Yes i have concidered filling the cracks for future projects. It will make it a little bit easier since i dont have to worry about the placement or the design that much. I think i will do some epoxy work next year

Oooh a cool narrative could be something like, these videos documenting a bygone era is some type of fantasy world. Like my you narrate the video as an explorer that finds the sculptures in various ruins and talks about what they think the history behind them is as well as admiring the marksmanship.
Really cool videos, as someone just getting into wood carving it's really fun seeing what others can do. Also, love how relaxed your voice is, very calming especially when i feel a bit restless.

I would commend your for the mere design and cinematic effect alone, of the oil dripping in each spot you presented is very nice.
I think when it came to the base, i was happy to hear that most of them you aimed to be temporary. although nothing was incredibly wrong with it it didn't feel as seamless as you other projects I've seen. I'm not sure if that means that the overall shape and vertical blocky shape of it didn't fit in my eye, or me wanting some other element to link them together. I actually thought for at least a moment that the cracks in the base were something that could not only link it together, but was also something connecting the vine patterns near the head of the bird. Since you have usually had a layered and nature/leaf looking elements in all areas, i was thinking this might have been an accent on the base connecting the cut out/down element of vines/veins creeping up from the bottom of the base and then into the bird. perhaps some other side narrative to the bird, or reason for its sleep/rest if that makes any sense.

Don't change anything in your videos that isn't coming to you naturally. If you're not a storyteller, then don't force yourself to become one just "for content".
There's plenty of people out there people who simply want to see your existing skillset grow, and your patience and creativity come to fruition. You're doing good.
And maybe consider adding sanding back? ; ) I'd love to see how the sculpture changes from the more coarse state to the super smooth polished one.

It looks absolutely magical, when the first brushstrokes of oil hit the wood. As for future video ideas... that's actually a hard one. Your format ist pretty straight forward as is your craft. You did mention, that you're getting more comfortable with finding the sculpture within the wood and that you can't always make sculptures of such large size. I believe, that going for a smaller piece once in a while is the only suggestion, i can make without trying to meddle with your style. I actually kinda looked forward to the tiny fallen hawk, that one could cradle in their hands, but then you whipped that big log out 😅

If you use beeswax on the cut ends of logs you plan to use as soon as possible after they are: this will help halt much of the cracking until you are ready to carve. Sometimes it can work to heavily oil periodically throughout caving. And finish after staining with oil. “Boos Lock, Mystery Oil” if you can get it where you are. Something similar should be available as alternate.
This is specifically designed for wood countertops and cutting boards.

Your talent to draw and carving just blew my mind. As much I started caving my small project. My Mjolnir and Jormungand is just small child necklace compare to even Your wolf heads. And other stuff like that hawk? It's just other level of carving.

A beautiful piece! I know you mentioned these bases being temporary, but I love the cut of wood you chose for this sculpture’s base. It’s as if the force from the hawk falling has cracked and splintered the base, which I think makes it even more impactful. Great job!

what a beautiful statue. So expressive and calming. Thank you for talking us through your artistic process as well. It is a glimpse into another world for a person who doesn't do such art.
For a suggestion - considering the lines, curves and shapes you often find in your sculptures, I thought that maybe an octopus would be a being you would do justice.

Making bases;check with companies that make headstones. They often have off cuts and mistakes, in granites and marble.
Another option is places that specialize in stone countertops, again off cuts and mistakes.
I like to make a “pile” of random colors and different types of stones.
As for ideas for next projects, I would love to see how you would design/create the mythical turtle that holds up the earth sitting on the four elephants.
I know, a lot of different bits to bring together. Maybe suited to a more future project.
How about a narwhal, or an orca. ;)

I should look into that. Stone does go great with wood. I love your suggestion! Would be really time consuming, But maybe well worth it!

As far as ideas for you goes… I love a good back story especially if there is cross-over (I guess getting into the realm of world building a bit there) but I would never want you to feel pressured into any certain ways your work goes, as obviously your creativity and skill rests on an absolutely incredible Imagination as it is.

Another gorgeous piece! As far as ideas for your future videos, I think that a part of your talent that might be sleeping on is the designing process. Your sketches and drawings are incredible, so maybe delving a little bit more into those would be worth doing? As for a future project, how about a dragonfly? Different textures from the creatures you've done so far.

    HURRAYYY NEW VIDEO!!
Oh- and I’d love to give you some ideas! I think your interpretation of a hunt would be SO COOL. I know that would be a difficult sculpt, but I’d be totally happy if it was just an osprey catching a fish. I also can imagine that antlers would be difficult, but I think a moose in your style would be absolutely stunning. Beavers, pronghorns, woodpeckers, pheasants, minks and otters would also just look so cool in your style- actually everything looks cool in your style XD
Just laying some animal ideas down! I’m an artist myself, so I get if you aren’t interested, but if I can pass any sort of inspiration I’m happy :)
