Glad to see you back ... AND your fronts. Seriously, as far as recurring characters go, you had Saffron, Niska, Badger and the "Hand of Blue" guys.
To tell you my place in the universe ... I am a superfan, absolutely LOVED the movie.
I'm sorry but, not your finest work. You guys reverted back to talking too much during the dialog, instead of pausing the video to discuss or just utilizing the gaps in the conversation, so you missed a lot of detail. I believe that explains your "Meh" experience a bit, as MOST of the real brilliance and uniqueness in Firefly WAS the dialog, and you missed it.
      Just trying to help ...

Wash dying the way he did upped the stakes for everyone else in the scene after, when Zoe, Kaylee, and Simon all get shot. I don't think we would have worried about their survival as much without his death right before it.

  • @rukbat3

Some of the "backsliding" was intentional, although poorly explained. The thought was that after Inara left, Mal became more closed off and less willing to accept new people into his crew/family. That's why it feels like he is rejecting Simon and River and why it is a significant moment when he tells the dying Book that he is actually part of Mal's crew.

This was my first introduction to the Firefly universe. Before that, I'd heard that the latest Joss Whedon show was "cowboys in space", and wasn't interested. We actually caught Serenity while on holiday and absolutely loved it, so THEN went back to watch the show. It has become my favourite show of all time and cannot get enough of watching reaction channels go on this journey.

As a longstanding Firefly fan, I loved this film. It pretty much gave me everything I wanted, while also making it accessible to movie audiences not familiar with the show. While I would have loved to get more films after this and was sad to say goodbye, I walked out of the theater feeling very satisfied. They did leave a couple things open to pursue in future films (like Mal and Inara), but nothing that I, personally, needed to see resolved onscreen.
As I'm sure others have already mentioned, the original hope was to do a movie trilogy, or at least a sequel. But the actors for Wash and Book weren't able to commit to future films, so that dictated what was done with their characters onscreen. Still, their deaths were meaningful and impactful and helped drive the story, so at least they weren't killed off simply for shock value. Book gave Mal the push he needed (the ability to "believe" in a cause-solving the mystery of "Miranda" and then exposing it). And Wash's death drove home the message that any of the characters could die, making us feel like there was more at stake in the scenes that followed.
So, yeah. Loved the movie! 😊

There's a nice bit on the DVD extras where Nathan Fillion gives a tour of the Serenity set and talks about the bigger sets for bigger acting.
Jubal Early was a great, disturbing character but The Operative is an even better one.

I saw this in theater after having watched the series (out of order) on f*#. Going into it my understanding was that it was meant to show if there was enough enthusiasm for another network to pick up the show.
When Book died I wasn’t too surprised. I figured someone was likely to perish in the movie and killing off his character would seemingly have the least effect on the show going forward- plus Ron Glass was best known as a theater actor so perhaps he was the least interesting in returning to a TV series.
So then when Wash was abruptly killed I was in disbelief- if it was to get picked up by another network would the show even be worth watching with the loss of two of the cast?
I later learned that any of the actors who couldn’t agree to a fairly broad (open ended) availability for a potential next season had to have their characters killed off or somehow written off - Alan Tudyk & Ron Glass were apparently both interested but couldn’t make such a broad commitment to something that may or may not happen.
On the other hand Wash’s sudden death heightened the tension and sense of peril in the hallway scene where everyone was wounded and made viewers wonder if Joss was maybe going to kill everyone off!

    • @-JustHuman-
      @-JustHuman- 2 года назад

There was more to it than that too, they said a movie is different than a series, so the bar had to be higher and they said 2 deaths in a row would make the "last stand" feel more like it could end there. They talked about there being enough room for the series between the movie and season 1 and that it could get rewritten too.

The characters of Wash and Book were killed off because the actors portraying them could not agree to be available for a sequel to Serenity due to prior commitments. Unfortunately the Serenity movie was not financially successful enough to warrant Universal to make a sequel.

Inara was originally planned to have a terminal illness- this is why she had a syringe with a lethal injection in Bushwhacked. She didn't want anyone to go through the pain of losing her when she died, so this is why she both joined Serenity in the first place to get away from everyone she knew, and also left after the series' end when she started to get too attached to Mal/the crew. They shelved that idea for the movie and tweaked her leaving to be more about her rocky relationship with Mal.

    • @sopdox
      @sopdox 2 года назад +2

Yes she was supposed to have a terminal illness. But the syringe wasn’t lethal to Inara. It was lethal to anyone who rapes her. She’d have to manage to inject herself and it would kill her attackers. Tim Minear talked about it in the Firefly reunion. Joss Whedon pitched an episode where Inara is attacked by a group of Reavers and uses the injection. The Reavers die a horrible death.

there was actually one big budget cut for the movie -- translation. while the cast attempts at speaking chinese are widely derided as incomprehensible, all the chinese text in the tv show was proper chinese. for the movie, someone just copied and pasted a bunch of random east asian characters and none of it makes any sense.

From a budget perspective, Serenity cost 39M, and supposedly earned 40.4M, so it covered it posterior. It successfully straddled both the requirements for the studio, while also providing a somewhat satisfactory conclusion to the series.

I love this film, so much. But it might be because I watched the series back then, followed every shitty thing Fox did to them, just to have it cancelled mid season. I spent that time after grieving that it never got a proper resolution, before we got the news of the film, then had to wait even longer while it was in production. I saw it at a local sci-fi film festival the day before the international premier date after standing in queue for tickets half a day. This film was so precious to me, and I forgive every shortcoming it might have, because it gave me 2 more hours with Serenity and my crew.

When this film was in pre-production, the cast was signed for a three picture pay-or-play deal. Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass were not willing to sign a three picture deal, which is why Joss Whedon killed off their characters. Unfortunately, this film did not make as much in theaters as DVD sales of the Firefly series indicated it should have, so Universal never green-lit the planned sequels. Fortunately, this film was a suitable conclusion to what we got, but like the series, it ended before its time.
However, behind the scenes interviews in the years since the series ended, Joss stated that had the series continued, Wash would have been killed somewhere during the second season, but not before he and Zoe had gotten pregnant.

In interviews I've seen, it was explained that the reason Wash and Book were killed off in this movie was because when Joss wrote it, he was aware there was a slight chance that if this did well, maybe the series would be rebooted (but probably not) and the two actors that played Wash and Book were contracted elsewhere and would not have been able to come back to a series if it had been revived. So the solution was to kill them off. Also, it was pretty amazing he wrote something that would answer a lot of questions for the fans and also be coherent and of interest to people who had never seen the TV series...and all in two hours.

It was planned for more films but didn't get there. Whedon had to appeal to all to get the funding this is why it feels that way.
As a Browncoat I love the film, even though it has 'odd' bits or inconsistencies when compared to the TV show.
    Spoilers...
Zoe was pregnant and has the kid but immediately gets captured by alliance, in the year after the transmission.
The remaining crew stay together with Mal and Inara finally getting together.
Mal and crew alongside the operative from the film team up to break her out... And rescue the other candidates similar to River, although they have 'perfected' the assassin program, and have to fight it out against the uber-assassin.
Early comes back and gets dumped out of the ship by Kaylee whilst in low atmo this time.
Dobson (from the first episode) comes back to try to even the score with Mal; he was shot in the eye but somehow survived. The alliance use him to track Mal and the crew after sending the transmission.
Book is actually the name of the person killed by Henry Evans... Who we know as Shepherd Book. Henry had a hard childhood, ran away, killed a guy and joined the independence. He poses initially as a member of the independence and then, after a while and with the use of a robotic eye and training, smarts and help becomes an alliance operative double agent... who was kicked out of the alliance early into the war when he convinced command to commit a big blunder - losing a lot of spaceships and a few thousand men... All with the aim of making the alliance lose the war on day one. That was all for nothing and he goes to the Abbey wondering where to go next...

I think the death of Book was not a big impact - but when Wash died, it felt like any character could die - nobody was safe.
I felt the movie did the job we wanted well enough - it tied up a number of threads, but worked as a movie. I think they were worried about trying to do too much and decided to focus on the main thread that would have been carrying the series - the River story and how the Reavers came to be. And because they needed people who had not seen the series to not be totally clueless, they had to do some reintroduction of characters and relationships.

7 seasons. 136 episodes. As long as their prior MCU coverage run to Iron Man 3, they are good to start. I recommend prologue and epilogue season endcaps. You can make predictions based on your existing MCU knowledge, followed by your season finale epilogue when you digest what came before. That would pad the count to 150 episodes.

I'll disagree with you on some things:
    1. If you hadn't seen the series Wash's death is as meaningful.
I think Zoe's transformation/reaction to that moment from then until the end of the movie absolutely lands for anyone watching. The image of her loading her gun while saying "He ain't comin' " is powerful.
    2. The villain and his "death/ending" aren't interesting.
as said by Book: He is a man who believes hard ... kills doesn't ask why. Much like a soldiers in war are asked to do. In this case both Browncoats and Alliance. Going back to the literal very beginning of this (series) story, we see soldier Mal, believing hard in his cause and killing for it. After his side loses he loses everything he believed in (god, justice, humanity, etc.). In the end of this movie he gains the perfect repayment: he robs a "true believer" of their belief.
