You should totally do a video on HOW TO PROPERLY CLEAN PRODUCE! 😬 this is very important and I feel like most people don’t do it 👀
Good idea!
YES! THIS!
@@jordanpagecompany a
I love this format. Straight to the point, no BS. Not like certain other RUclipsrs that make reviews and then end up talking for 10 minutes about a random product of their sponsor, and how incredibly impressed and happy they are about that product, which obviously always comes across as very authentic, and which never really has anything to do with the topic of the video.
Glad you liked it!
I totally agree with you 😇
When buying grapes look for stems that are green rather than brown or withered. It typically means they are fresher and will last longer.
I have been told I am the queen of picking avocados with the smallest seeds. The avocado that is oval shaped has a seed much smaller than the ones shaped like an old school lightbulb. I learned this when I was growing up in Panama and working in a restaurant that used lots of avocados for 15 years. The other tips you gave for avocados are accurate. 👍
The "bee sting" u speak of is actually called webbing..and it means its been pollinated...so grandma was onto something lol
Great video, but one thing is wrong! The "belly button" of the avocado shot NOT be removed cause it opens the avocado and it is easier to oxidize and go bad very fast...I hate people who remove it and than stick the avocado back and not buy it...once this avocado gets sold it is gone bad already. DO NOT REMOVE IT!!! You should be able to choose a good one just by the softness and color...please people, stop removing the belly button!!!!!
@veronika Kotyzova THANK YOU! It's not cool when people do that. I think that people just weren't aware that popping off that button allowed air in and caused the avocado to spoil.
AGREE! I've seen that tip so many times & it annoys me every time. Removing the belly button just ruins the avocado for anyone else!
I agree with you . I have noticed that all the avocados at the store in my neighborhood the avocados are all missing that or are squished so bad that you can see how big the persons fingers were. and they are too expensive here to risk having them be bad when i get home.
Corn tip:
I have sold produce from my family own farm market for 15 years.
Instead of looking at each ear of corn and pulling back all of the husk and leaving ones that you dont want and letting the ones you dont want go to waste.
Look at the silks on the top of the corn. The darker brown the ripper it is. If is black then the corn will be hard. If you like small kernels the light brown is less ripe and not as full.
Thank you for this tip!
I wish everyone would do this. I love to cook my corn whole in the microwave so I can't get ones that have been shucked or it doesn't cook right. Nothing more annoying than wanting to get some corn and not being able to find any that haven't been ripped open by other people.
For tomatoes not molding store them on your counter but put the stem side down.
Great tip!
You can store the avocados with bananas on the counter to ripen them faster! Once ripe put them in the fridge. They last way longer that way-but wait for them to ripen FIRST😚
Megan Kerry or in a paper bag with a ripe banana!
I use bananas to speed up fruit too!
I was taught to smell my strawberries - they need to smell sweet, strong, and like dirt, or it's too early in the season
And don't buy something the first time you see it in the groceries store. It's too expensive, and not on the peak of the season yet
If you buy a bag of avocados from Costco or something, I usually put all but 1-2 in the fridge to slow down the ripening and then let the 1-2 I took out ripen on the counter. Repeat every few days until I run out of avocados.
Great idea!
Don’t forget to check out the bottom of the pineapple for imperfection and mold. Mold sprouts first on the bottom.
I'm sorry it may be childish but your description of a good cucumber had me howling, 'firm not flacid' 😂🤣😂🤣
Frances Latimer me too
I heard also with grapes to look for green vines and shake them. If they fall off too easy they are over ripe. So far it’s worked for me.
I do the vine test too. And usually I'll lift the bunch out of the bag...if there are loose grapes in the bottom, they're too ripe and won't last as long.
Great video! My mother-in-law taught me that to check if corn is ripe/good, prick one kernel with your fingernail. The juice should look "milky."
When buying strawberries I always 1) very carefully look at all angles of the container 2) smell the container. If I see any moldy ones I hand them over to a supermarket employee. For other fruits that are bad if no employee near by I place the fruit so the bad part is very noticeable and if possible away from the other fruit so it doesn't spoil the other apples, peaches etc.
I love watching your videos Jordan. You are straight to the point and funny. You give so much info without all the drawn out repetitive explanations. Even your longer videos are great, they don’t bore me with useless details that a lot of other RUclipsr’s do. You always have such great advice, tips and you’re crazy funny. Thanks for the watermelon tip. ❤️
Grew up with peach trees all around. The best ones are rich in color and smell. If it smells like a sweet peach you'll be getting a sweet peach. I miss Grandma's house. 🍑
“but grandma never lies, idk🤷🏻♀️” LOL
Keepin' it real!
Thanks for your tips. I love your tips. I help my mom I had no idea about the cucumbers. I always get the big fat ones.
Tipton corn. Put it in the microwave in the husk for 4 mins per corn then when it’s done cut it on the. Bottom and squeeze it. It comes out clean and perfectly cooked. Easy for kids to help in the kitchen.
Freeze grapes when they start going bad. Makes a good cold summer treat.
Maddie the Explorer yes on microwaving corn 🌽!!! So much easier, tastes great, and doesn’t heat up the kitchen like boiling water. I do 5 minutes for one ear, and add an additional minute for each ear I put in with it (6 minutes for two ears, 8 for four, etc.).
For potatoes I was taught that if you can smell the dirt when you smell the package then they are good to use. if you can't smell the dirt, some of them may be bad or turning bad. Onions you want to make sure you don't feel any softness, they can look perfect on the outside but if it is slightly squishes it means the onion is bad or going bad.
That is exactly how I look at Strawberries. Everyone around me looks at me like I'm crazy because I'm the only person in the store holding the package above my head and shaking it around. Something you didn't mention is that you should give the fruit packages a little shake because sometimes the yucky ones are hiding.
With cantaloupe, you want the skin underneath the netting part to look closer to orange then to green.
I had a coworker from Puerto Rico to always look at the bottom of the apples when buying them. The more pointy the ridges are, the more juicy they are.
For grapes I look at the stem too. A dried out stem means it is older and will be mushy. Nice strong green stems means that they are fresher and last longer.
for pineapple, check the very bottom. there’s often small specs of mold and what would otherwise look like a good pineapple
hi put your pineapples upside down if you need to ripen them quick- it makes them sweet af!
Great tip! 🙌🏻
I heard that somewhere and it also helps so that the bottom of the pineapple doesn’t ripen too fast
It’s true! I do that too
Thanks!!
When I was in Maui, we toured a pineapple farm & the growers told us that once ripe, cut the top off, turn it upside down on a plate & refrigerate overnight. When you cut it up the next morning, the sweetness has flowed from the bottom all thru the fruit making every bite delicious!
The avocado ‘pulling of the button’ tip is a bad idea - first - it doesn’t always work - next - if the button is gone the avocado will go brown in that end because the oxygen gets in through that hole....
If everyone pulls of the button, there is a bunch of avocados going bad for anyone who comes after ;)
I got this from the ‘how does it grow Channel’....
She was just showing us!
Anna Castillo - the point is that its a fake tip - it’s wrong and it spoils the avocado faster even if you buy it yourself...
I really do t care what she did in the video - but if a tip is wrong and there is a better way, shouldn’t someone say so?!?
Sabina Hertzum :)
"Take it home to Mama" 😂👌 I love listening to your grocery videos when i night shop by myself without kiddos. Loved this as always girl. -Pamela💗
Great one, video suggestion: do a video on how to plan grocery shopping track. What comes first, priority and how to compare prices. Thanks
I simply love this video.. I was always told to smell apples and if they smell musky you don't want they are old. Also smell bagged potatoes if they smell musky, chances are they have a bad apple in the bag you can't see.
Limes! I learnt with an aunt of mine to pick the ones that have the smoothest surface possible. These are the ones that contain the most juice inside. Always worked for me!
carollabanca Yes, I do that too! Also the thinner skin with more yellow and light green, not the dark green, thick skinned ones. And if they have a little softness when you squeeze, that's good. Don't buy hard ones. 😊
Kami Oltman oh my! Thanks for perfecting the technique!! Lol loved the tips!!! We always have limes at home. Glad to know that now I can pick even better ones 🙌🏼😊
I’m a Shipt shopper and I’ve heard on avacados the more pimples the better. Also the tighter the webbing on a cantaloupe the sweeter they are. 🛒 loved this video!!
We shop online a lot of the time and my biggest concern is if my produce is up to par.
Usually it is, but these tips are great! And you are GRRRREEEAT!
We actually did a "shop online for a month" experiment in May. I was worried about my produce but most of the time it was ok and we actually ended up not using too much money... :)
Real Organized i always shop online because it makes it easier for me to plan my meals and not waste food - I buy products for particular meals so I know what I’m going to be eating and I set a schedule after the ingredients arrive according to their readyness to be prepared so I don’t let anything spoil :)
Love this!! I check the pineapple on the bottom for mold. Check to see how green the vines are for the grapes. This is in indicator of freshness.
Also, I always guess the weight of melons before lifting them. If it’s heavier then I thought, it’s juicy!
Lastly, check cantaloupe for a light undertone. Like the pineapple, if it’s undertone is too green, it was picked to ripen at the store and not vine ripened.
That's all the tips I use for watermelon and I'm always getting weird looks and questions when im knocking watermelon LOL all the tips you shared I do too so thank you for confirming for me that I'm not the crazy lady at the market haha love your videos! :)
For the under ripe avocados, you can put them next to a banana & they ripen within a day.
I’m totally using the watermelon trick for my housewarming party! watermelon 🍉❤️😋
I am a 10 year old who mostly watches your videos from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. but I still love your personality and your videos
Will you do more freezer breakfast, meals snacks etc
I second that!
Grew up in Alaska from 72 to 2006..back in the 70's and 80's fruits and vegetables were hit and miss..so thank you for these tips..love all the farmers markets here..
First ever of your videos I actually knew everything you mentioned. That's how I check my produce. The biggest we buy are apples, potatoes, bell peppers, and onions that were not mentioned. If I happen to get a dud I just take it back to the store. It's a rarity for me but it helps save some money.
I'm so glad you did a produce (ONLY) video. This mama has a hard time watching your grocery hauls and store tip videos because of the meat and other animal products. But this one....YAAAAASSSSS.
So glad you liked it!
Smell at the bottom of the pineapple,in the middle, where the "stem" is. If it smells pineapple and fresh.then it's all Good 😉
Yes I totally needed this video in my life! I can pick out the fruits and veggies I buy on the regular but I avoid other things that I really want to buy because I don’t know which ones are good. Totally going to buy a cantaloupe and pineapple at the store today 😊
Thanks for all the great tips...I knew the avocado one but didn't know the others
love your new haircut! Yes, my brother told me that once but l never knew what the bee sting looked like. love it and thanks
the only fruit trick i know that you didn't say in here, is to pick the heaviest oranges. i'm always weighing the oranges in my hands. that means they aren't dried out and are good and juicy.
Good tip! Thank you!
The pineapple and avocado tricks so good!! 😯 I suck at picking watermelons but my husband does the knock and listen trick lol and he def picks the most juicy ones! Great vid 😊
TFS. I thought everyone knew the purpose of the trash can by the corn. Once when I was checking the corn as you demonstrated some lady lost her stuff and started screaming at me because I didn’t just pick the corn without checking it. I politely told her I wanted to make sure the food I chose was good. She literally had a melt down right in the produce section of Kroger.
Oh goodness!
Such a great video!
Is Q&A Tuesday going to come back?
Love the video! Just miss the Q&A Tuesdays. :)
I wish we could bring it back. We simply don't have the time to do it every Tuesday anymore. 😭 BUT if you'll sign up for our newsletter at FunCheaporFree.com you might hear about something REALLY cool pretty soon!
@@jordanpagecompany I am already signed up. :) And I totally understand. You're one busy mama! Looking forward to seeing what's new.
Hey Jordan, you are such an inspiration!! Thank you for all the tips!!
My mom (she's almost 74) is always checking over the produce in our Aldi, looking at various packages, putting one down, going to the next. I was always like, "why not just pick one"? My mom always tells me, "hey I'm paying the same price anyway, why take home something I can't use"? She is checking and checking so much so that I often go (OMG not again), but I guess she's totally right!
She's absolutely right! It can take awhile, but it helps you prevent bringing home rotten fruit and veggies.
I do smell all the fruit and vegetable what I buy and if it's smell as the fruit or vegetable should. I buy it! Love you Jordan Page you are a life saver!!!
🥰
I didn't see any tricks for picking out good limes, so here you go: Look for the smoothest and shiniest skin (don't buy bumpy limes!), this means it is very juicy. Then when you find a couple of those, hold one at a time to find the heaviest ones, this also means super juicy.
Thank you so much for the tips!
Just bought a watermelon and had all the 3 features and it was delicious. I never noticed the bee sting...and when I saw it was happy...tried it and it was sweet :)
Yay! So happy you got a good one!
This is so on time! I have been having the hardest time finding GOOD watermelons to feed my summertime addiction. Now I know the secret... bee stings (because grandmas never lie and they KNOW things!) 😉😊💕
That's right! Grandmas know all the things! Happy watermelon picking! 🥰
Omg this is super helpful bcuz I suck at these things😂
🤣 So glad it's helpful!
A friend told me years ago that avocados get damaged from people handling them in the supermarket, something about the oils on your fingers. You're better off buying a sealed multipack a few days out from when you need them, and using the apple/banana in a paper bag hack to speed things up if necessary.
Also, I always try to buy discounted tomatoes, they're so much sweeter.
I always put the watermelon on my shoulder and tap it to listen for it to sound hollow.
My family says I'm really good at picking pineapple!
A good pineapple is so delicious!
I do the thump test when it comes to watermelons!!!!
I'm obsessed with watermelon and will obsessively knock on them all with no shame.
You are hilarious!! And this video is so helpful. These are all the produce I suck at choosing the right ones. Lol
Ok thank you, I never know how to pick a pineapple so I've totally bought the precut ones before, much to my budget's dismay.
So glad this helped you!
My grandmother always cut the ends off the cucumbers and rubbed it along the cut ends. She said it helped with the acidity.
You’re so inspirational and make the most helpful videos ever!! Prayers!!!
Thank you, Brena! 🥰
For the produce that are sold by each like avocados or pineapple, I choose the biggest ones, because the bigger or smaller are the same price. For avocados, it’s easier to find the biggest ones among the greener ones that you would have to wait a few days, because most people would buy the ones they can eat today, and the biggest ones will be all gone.
Tomatoes - any pieces left over from sandwiches or tomatoes that are too ripe, have a zip lock bag in the freezer and toss them in there. Next time you make a bolognaise or any other tomato-based meal on the stove, throw the frozen pieces in.
I’ve always heard that watermelon should be heavier than it looks. I use that tip along with tapping on it and the yellow spot.
Can also put cantaloupe in brown paper bags to ripen
Good tip! Thank you!

Thanks for the LOVE!
@@jordanpagecompany you deserve it babe 😘
Girl I so do that with strawberries too! 🍓 💗 u!
I rotate the strawberries in the fridge too to keep fresher with hair flow to save from mold.
*WATERMELON:* You *definitely* have to look for the one with the biggest receptacle (blossom/flower mark) for sure!
And for the hollowness it depends on what you like! The hollow ones are ripe & very sweet, yes. But they are mealy/granular also!..
I love your channel girl, I have learnt so much on saving money on fresh produce & grocery ti[s & hacks.
Greetings from South Africa
I was just reading about produce on your blog the other day! 💛 So happy I'm not the only one who never buys just one avocado! 😂💛
Grocery stores started putting trash cans near corn because inconsiderate customers fully shucked it and left the trash laying around! Sad. It is one thing to look to see if the corn is to your standards, but quite another to leave behind a mess. To those who shuck the corn in the store, it really is not the best idea. Corn should be shucked immediately before cooking it. This ensures the best taste.
Thanks! Great video.
What you should also know about avocados is by popping out the stem ripens them faster.
after watching your how to pay for sports and activities video, i think it’d be super interesting to watch in more detail how you pay for competitive dance. for example, the dancewear, the shoes, the tuition, the comp fees, etc.
That's a good video idea! I'll put it on my list and see if it makes the cut!
Grapes with green stems are the freshest, so I also try to get the pack with the most green stems in it 😊
Woot woot… got to see this before the thousands... I love your videos like this. TY!
Yay! Thank you so much!
Loved all your produce tips- most I've never heard before
Yesss! A video that will help me so much when getting fruit now. Thank you Jordan
Yay! So glad it has helped you!
Such a big help!
Can you plz do ‘Back to School Essentials’ Video?
I'll add it to my list of ideas. Hopefully it gets picked!
This is so helpful ! Thank you !!
I buy different ripeness bananas. Yellow for now, a little green for mid week and really green for end of week. Now I don’t have to go back to the grocery store for more bananas and be tempted to spend more money👍
Great idea!
Another set of great tips from Mama J! 😊 Going to the grocery store tonight. Thank you so much for the info!
So glad it helped! 🥰
Jordan Page, FunCheapOrFree 🤗
I needed help with watermelon 😘
Love these tips.
Turn that pineapple 🍍upside down a half an hour before cutting it. Doing that the juice will redistribute through the pineapple & if ripe that pineapple will be really juice.
Great tip! Thank you!
You can also put avocados in the fridge once they are ripe and they last an extra week or 2! :)
Great tips! Please consider how much food gets wasted in the US. I've respectfully asked for things to be discounted because they're close to their Best Buy date, even Wal-Mart has discounted things for me.
That's a good tip, too!
Thanks Jordan!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
loveeee me some good watermelon during summer!
Jordan, Jordan, Jordan. I don't know what I did before becoming a fan. Love, the advise. Thanks a lot. And guess what the plan a year in advance, works, it's wonderful.
Yay! So glad you're finding help and that you're a member of the Freeb Family!
This is gold, thank you Jordan! 😘
