For every drummer out there who moves their arms around like Animal from the Muppets. They should look at this. This is one of the best examples of efficient use of motion and body movement in drumming I have ever seen. Omar's technique blows me away every time.
Look at Steve Marcus smiling! you can’t get a better compliment than that!. Imho Omar is a World Music type of jazz drummer and his style puts me somewhere between the Caribbean to the Pacific to Africa….Not a tuxedo guy….doesn’t have to be….His energy is infectious! His personality shines warm and happy….
this is the only Buddy Rich memorial performance where I saw the drummer actually communicate with the soloist on dynamics, and on the change of groove. Omar, you clearly have an outstanding feel for the music. One of the best I've seen.
Have to be some drummer to play like that with so much exuberance, joy, freedom, skill, flair, watching all the band, freaking amazing performance in his prime. Cool af.
Hakim is to music what butter and cream are to cooking. One of my top three favourite drummers along with Al Foster and Aaron Scott. I could listen to him forever and never get bored.
Coming into the comment 6 years later. Omar was incredible here - really showcased his talent. I will say that Mr. Chambers I believe is right up there. Would've been awesome to see Omar and Dennis play during the same tribute.
Omar is truly one of the best. Rock drummers can play with power but no finesse. Much harder to play with finesse. Omar plays with as much power and finesse as you will ever need. He played with Weather Report among other bands. Weather Report always had good drummers to play their demanding music. Manu Katché is another great drummer to check out.
I saw Omar at The Royal Albert Hall with Sting on The Dream of the Blue Turtles tour, a dream band! His touch, as exemplified on Shadows In The Rain, was a watershed moment for me, awakening me to the true artistry and musicality of what a drummer needs to achieve. One of the GOATs, and hey, predominantly matched grip!!
this is not just playing the drums. the man is totally in tune with this type big band performance he's really in sync with the whole sound, the music, the groove, the spirit, everything. Exceptional drumming I haven't seen him better before, he elevated himself brilliant, it's why later he got to play with people like Sting. That's a world class performance tonight folks.
Totally agree. He's supporting the composition and the band without being prominent and at the same time he enriches and intensifies, adds so much groove to the performance. Oh, how I adore his drumming!
@@KONAMAN100 The 3 instrumental tracks from his solo album are excellent and what you really wanna see is a Weather Report show with Omar Hakim behind the drums.
These people are so in sync their talent is just beyond ridiculous. I can only shake my head in despair to hear the garbage that is played on the radio presently.
Big band is where the real action is and Mr Hakim is driving that group nicely and playing all the big lines ! I love his loose and effortless open-handed style and rockin' hats... wish i could drum in a big band like that ... marvelloso !
Always loved Omar, great technique, musicality, spirit, and joy when playing. First saw/heard of him with Sting and his first solo album. After his modern drummer interview (in 1984 with Terry Bozzio the cover) I went and got his work with Weather report, John Scofield, etc. Such a great player! I have to admit I enjoy his earlier work because he was a drummer/musician rather then doing the solo albums and singing but man what a package! Required listening!
You can see the JOY that Omar has in his eyes. He and Steve are saying "is this great or what " ?? How do you come down after a show like this ? Must take hours !!
This guy is killing it, in spite of the musings of the keyboard experts who choose to spout their distain, because “they” can do it better (horse s**t !). This piece was technically amazing. And this bass player holy s**t !
+Jay strass Are you onto JoJo Mayer? I'm not saying he's a buddy rich tributer or anything but he's certainly a modern pioneer of drum techniques. If you like slow grooves too, check out the drummer for Hiatus Kaiyote.
When i first heard omar hakim with weather report on the album procession i immediately fell in love with his playing!! He was the reason i got a passion with the drums!!! One of my all time favorite drummers alongside with steve smith, terry bozzio, dave weckl....
@@TheDrummer51 Me too, but at the time I didn't know it was him. Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles with Englishman etc was the first time I heard his name. Manu Katche came next, then Vinnie, Gadd, Morganstein, Weckle. Peart.... What a great time, to hear them all for the first time.
@@TheDrummer51 Gotta throw this out there: Robbie Robertson's album from 1987-8ish has Amazing Manu K. work. Somewhere down the Crazy River. Bozzio's on it too. 👍👍
Incredible performance! Here's a fun fact and I'm sure no one will believe me but my next-door neighbor, Brian Chase, who used to play drums professionally as a studio drummer, claims that he grew up with Omar as drummer buddies, out of the same neighborhood and still maintains relations with him to this day.
Your missing the point--who cares what he's wearing ---it's an awesome display of his fantastic expression--I love the way he plays with his ability--can't you tell he's having a ball--that's what it's all about--I love him--always have
Thank you marcosfo for posting these HQ videos of Omar Hakim. The most influential drummer of my drum journey. Listen for how infectious Omar's feel is to the rest of the band.
46 THUMBS DOWN??? As far as playing goes... Hahahaha, come on guys. If you can destroy a set like this and just oooze amazing ability, OK, then say something. If not... Shhhhhh... Master performance... ...and yes, dude is so amazing, he can ham it up for the camera when most of us would be a sweaty mess and probably wearing a tuxedo which would limit our mobility and cause some type of injury? ;) The clothing comment when I first read it was a bit much, but when I actually thought about it, the rest of these Orchestra cats are suited up - maybe a shirt with a collar could get a passing grade on dress code? And I say this only because my wife would tear my ass up if I wore a T-Shirt to a gig like this... Haha. The era that Buddy Rich played in - those guys played in suits. As always, Omar Hakim - amazing. Utmost respect.
"Had he been in Buddy's band, he would have been fired ON THE SPOT" Good thing he wasn't in Buddy's band, right? If Hakim was listening to a band leader, you bet that he'd show up presented the way his boss desired, but Hakim is his own boss here. There's a multitude of reasons why he may have shown up in such casual attire, but they don't concern me. The playing is what matters here.
Yes! I was totally going to say something but I'll let you take this one! Omar is amazing.. that friggin fanny pack would would be in my way if I was playing! I bet it is a good place to keep drum keys though.. lol
I love this! This and the Slo Funk with Omar's solo is such inspiring work! His interpretation of these tunes is really cool. At 4:53 when you see the look on the sax players face as he watches Omar is awesome. Music!!!!!!!
This reminds me of a great CD that Harvey Mason released a few years ago. It was titled With All My Heart, and it featured some amazing performances with some equally brilliant musicians. Anyone who loves this type of music should check it out. Amazing stuff...
It's interesting how drumsets and their sound have evolved over the decades: by then the trend was several, huge power toms with clear heads and the ride cymbal up high and inclined (Weckl and Simon Phillips used to do the same). Now you see most of the elite drummers with smaller toms -mostly with coated heads- and cymbals just slightly inclined.
I've been a drummer for over 50 years and Omar Hakim is one of the best I've ever seen. Unreal.
Actually peter erskine is my fav, thing is i dont kno if omar could do steely dan!!!?? Look up like ampatheatre w/ erskine he fn killed it, is that hes bag ahh no

I'd say one of the best and most moving drum performances of all time, by anybody.
Omar ain't no joke. His "touch" around the kit is world-class. I will never get tired of his playing.
Me too! He is one of the smoothest, and best!
Omar plays with such precision and skill. I'm a long time fan.

Omar's one of my favorites. Great chops, great touch, and so musical. Truly one of the greats.
His work with Sting took him out of the studio and into the realms of legend.
Hakim is to music what butter and cream are to cooking. One of my top three favourite drummers along with Al Foster and Aaron Scott. I could listen to him forever and never get bored.
By far the best tribute to Buddy, no body else kicked that much ass, and if that didn't make u move than nothing will. Beautiful.
