I had never seen him up until this concert in the early 90s . Blew EVERYONE away! One of the best players of that decade, criminally underrated by the drum industry
there is a reason why he was shunned I know a bit about this guy first of all racist he hates whites ok fair enough do and hate what you will it wont make me lose any sleep but on top of that sure he can play sure he has chops but he's simply over playing if he played like this on 2 records that may be the reason he over plays simple as that I can and HAVE over played so I'm not hating on him at all in fact if anything is useful advice to everyone better to slightly under play than to over play just one not its ugly sounding...listen to it if you think this sounds good ...you need to get into an ear training camp listen to some old kenton records or any good big band and they wouldn't be caught dead playing like this and this guy should have known better thats what gets my goat a jazz drummer should have payed enough dues to know what overplaying is welp here a prime example of it
@@kirkwatstien6979 this is a drum concert. Drummers play differently at festivals look at the recent buddy concerts. Smitty Took souls that day. And if you listen to other recordings of him it’ll prove my point.
Gee this guy is serious. It would have been fantastic to have seen him in a drum battle w/ Mr Dennis Chambers, it would have been the drum battle of the century!
Amongst the greats, yes he gets his due, but imo he's right up there with ANYONE playing. I think Steve Smith is incredible, and one of my favorite drummers. Check out the battle between these two. Smitty is incredible!
a bit? you are a very kind person this so overplayed it would get anyone of us fired I was there that night it was somehow even worse sounding live ugh how to solo over greensleeves
Read some of the comments. I like dave weckl and Dennis chambers. Neither of them however are on the lvl of this guy when it comes to playing straight ahead jazz. Get real. Most of u probably never heard one record hes played on lol.
Someone who gets it. I'm surprised why Smitty isn't more talked about. The dude can play it all effortlessly! He's just as good as DC in my informed opinion.
o yes he plays good i allways liked him .fast hands i got him on you tube .same as fon morcus he is on you tube allso dond know anything about fon morcus or were this guy is from he is a heck of a show drummer .he is a old guy .you cant thel by his drumming .i think he is from fla . i just dond know i love his performens .
@@RichardEllis-p7l You need to watch more BR, playing drums is not just about speed. Obviously BR never did the double BD thing, it was not part of his set. He played a solo with just bass drums once in the 1950s I think. A novelty to him.
And making stupid ass comments about drummer Dennis Chambers. Dennis Chambers is also a great Jazz bebop Drummer. Dennis has studied Bebop Jazz all his life. And can swing his ass off playing bebop Jazz. You all's statements are very wrong and not accurate at all about Dave Wackl, and Dennis Chambers. you are very Ingorant and unaware of these guys true abilities as drummers. You people need to listen to more jazz sets on these two drummers. Get your facts straight.
fast and great chops, but inchoherent . His fills are competing with the band rather than punching the accents and complimenting it as the old school greats like buddy and louie bellson did.
jesus this was awful. Yes I am comparing him to buddy but he is playing one off his chart. What the hell happened 2.12 2.24?? He is trying to be fast fast fast and show how good he is, BR just was that good. Huge difference. 4.07 - just another flurry flurry solo. Hated it.
WOW. What an incredible musician. Masterful technique, blinding speed, awesome rhythmic creativity - the whole package.
I get to see this legend perform almost every week in LA. What a treat…

Not of decade,of all times

@@bozziofan01 you don't have to prove your point, dude has to prove his.. You HAVE Proof, he doesn't.
Smitty nails Greensleeves & entire concert from memory. The solo is amazing, complete command!
Forget Sting........this guy has played with Sonny Stitt, Earl Hines, Art Farmer & Sonny Rollins!!!!!
He's playing the drums like he was drinking a cup of tea :)
For sure, just effortless. He never changes his face, looks like he's going to sit on it and just clock in an easy night until you listen.
Incredible.
I just froze with amazement for the past 7 minutes
Always thought Smitty was an underrated drummer, thanks for the upload.
Very, very underrated...brilliant drummer.
I wonder if he still plays Pearl these days, or has he been poached by DW, as well.
Gee this guy is serious. It would have been fantastic to have seen him in a drum battle w/ Mr Dennis Chambers, it would have been the drum battle of the century!
It would take me a lifetime to learn a song like that😂😂😂😂
Tremendo baterista!!!! Con tremenda orquesta!!!!!
The one and only Smitty❣
Awesome playing from an awesome drummer.
He killed everyone, even Vinnie. Facts.
Marvin was in rare form of this bloody Richard Memorial Scholarship
This is epic af
just awesome
Was this before or after he did Family Matters? Great job!

Which Pearl kit would this be.
I think he might have been the drummer on one of the the tonight shows, a few years back.
He was the Tonight Show drummer for many years. The kit is either a Pearl MLX or BLX.
...and like the great Steve Urkel...a-bit-over-the-top!@!!!!
It's called technique!
S R I think he meant his look. Yeah, this guy can play!!!! IMO as good as they come
a bit? you are a very kind person this so overplayed it would get anyone of us fired I was there that night it was somehow even worse sounding live ugh how to solo over greensleeves
Best of the best
Wow. That's all...WOW!
The Grace ! Mr Marvin ! Magnificent ! God bless you ! Friendly ! (Didier D'agostino Frenchy drummer /teacher ,vidéos on youtube ,humbly ! )
He's a F"$%^ng BEAST....love the guy...
I love Marvin's style and creativity... @ 1922208 - He does resemble Steve Urkel right here. lol
Damn Smitty!
Absolutely ripping! Smitty is rad. Anybody know what ride he's using?
seeminglytransparent 22” k custom brilliant w 3 rivets back then

what's a record you'd recommend with Smitty on it?
I meant Marvin he's one of the best drummers I've ever known
He's a bolt of lightning
talk about WHAT NOT TO DO this is PURE OVERPLAYING
Damn, he makes it look easy!
Wow !!..He's so skinny here ..
5 thumbs up...
He was a young guy
yep...everyone is young at some point and then they gradually grow older year by year. it's called aging...
Marvelous smoke and I put them right up there with Billy Cobham I said Marvin is smoking movies playing them very mean drum
Why don’t any of these guys use Slingerland or Ludwig, Buddy’s main two brands.
Because they weren't endorsed to those companies.

Buddy did all this with a basic kit.
No he didn't
No he didn’t!!!!

That folks, is how you play the drums. Thus PROVING my theory that you do not have to strike a drum hard!
your theory
Isn't that Ercle? The TV kid?
Yes...Yes...Yes.. Marvin Beat the sh-- out of those skins!!
ВЫСШИЙ ПИЛОТАЖ..................................РОССИЯ !

BS. His technique is amazing.
+Bart W Check the documentary. Buddy's band was impressed.
I have to agree ,too busy at times and he misses a few ques(@2:10 it's just a big miss).
Like any of you are good enough to play with this band! Just enjoy the talent he has.
I loved these vids as a teenager but always skipped Marvin's bits. I just don't get him. Too busy?
