Fishing from the pier, I dive into whether this fish is trash or delicious. Many fish are considered "trash" for various reasons, but in my opinion most of them have value. Join me for a few days fishing from this Florida pier for giant bluefish, jacks, cobia, and kingfish. Pier fishing in Florida can present many awesome opportunities, and this migration doesn't happen very often.

As you and Vic are the reason why I'm taking this tuna trip with Tillman next month, one thing I'm fearing, is that that arm lick up, as it's happened several times fishing off Deerfield on those deep drops with no electrics, I was going to hydrate with lots of gatorade. As a former military guy, what your suggestion was for the Protekt, I'm going to add these to my gatorade to curb those debilitating arm cramps. Thanks for the discount code. Power to the jungle juice
@@ArunasPauliukonis in my opinion no need to add them to Gatorade, I had 2 of the hydration packets mixed with water plus 2-3 more waters throughout the day and I was fine. Those were also colder days so I wasn’t sweating too much
@@ArunasPauliukonis No need for the gatorade. Adding 1-2 of these into water through out the day will curb those cramps!
@@protektproducts thanks brother, one thing I can not stand is muscle cramps when I know I have the ability in the tank left, fatigue I can take with a grain of salt! Thanks
Totally hear you @@ArunasPauliukonis . With these types of trips, you're probably waking up super early in the morning -- when you're at your most dehydrated. First thing when you wake up, drink 32oz of water with a Protekt HYDRATION added to your water. Before your morning coffee or any caffeine. Experts agree this is one of the most powerful things you do every day. Throughout the day, drink water often. We're talking large 26oz or 32oz YETI bottle 8 times throughout the day. Especially in the heat of the day. That would even be a great time to add another HYDRATION to your water -- between noon and 2pm most likely.
Pick up some quality UPF layers to keep the sun off you a bit to avoid overheating. Overheating causes you to dehydrate more quickly. Avoid sugar (gatorade) and too much alcohol. We're not saying don't have some beers with the boys. Just that mixing some water in and maybe an extra HYDRATION will help stave of dehydration and cramping.
Please let us know if we can be of additional help! We completely stand behind our products. If you follow our recommendation and cramp during your trip, please contact us for a full refund.
Jack's and blues are great with or without the blood line. Grilled or baked with your choice of seasoning might just surprise you. Smaller Jacks tend to be less wormy.
I like making fish cakes with bluefish. Find a can of old bay with the crab cake recipe on it and substitute the bluefish in for the crab meat. They are delicious!
That’s actually a brilliant idea
@RyanMorie I'm going to try that next time I catch a tailor. I love old bay seasoning
I know you all have been craving a pier video, so I hope you enjoy this one, I know I had a ton of fun making it! What's the biggest Bluefish you all have ever caught?
okaloosa island peir doesnt have big blue fish so my biggest was probably like 3lbs
80cm 6kg NSW Australian
Great content What pier and part of Fla is this?
Nags Head Beach - 25lbs all day during a “blitz”. Just throwing spoons.
Noooo. You didn't keep the cheeks. The best part of Big Blues (12lb+) is the cheek meat between the gill plate and the eye. Mild, white meat in the cheeks.
Used to catch 12-20 pounders blitzing the surf on Hatteras Island in NC regularly late '80s thru the mid '90s. Amazing seeing them chasing schools of Speckled Trout into the wash on the beach. I once dip netted a 7-8lb Speck between my feet. One big bite out of it...
Definitely, thank you Christina! Long day in a difficult job. My son has a 2021 F150, it's left him stranded a couple of times for the same reason, once while he was driving on one of Florida's highways. They did fix it, so far. Have a wonderful week you two, absolutely beautiful meal!
So glad I'm a surf fishing guy. Don't know how ANYONE can fish like that, lol. Although, catching the Yellow Eye Devils are always fun. Very oily fish when larger than 4-5lbs, great for smoking and fish dip. If you want to bake or broil, try soaking in butter milk or whole milk for a few hours prior to the oven. Will cut down on the oily texture of the larger fillets. Smart move on not incorporating the belly meat. Belly meat on blues is not palatable. Also, good call on the mayo. As oily as mayo is, for some reason it negates the oil of the meat. Mom used to do that when I brought home blue fish when I was a kid.
As for the truck issue... Maybe someone tried to clone your key fob in the parking lot. The truck recognized it was not the correct codes being sent to it and sent itself in shutdown mode. After a while it woke and recognized your correct coded fob. Kind of like your I-phone locking you out for 5 minutes when you enter the wrong password.
My B&T guy had a bluefish reciepe...
"As soon as you catch em bleed em and put em on ice. Scale em and fliet them with the skin on. Put em on some water soaked cedar boards and put em ob the grill. When the bkuefish is nice and firm and done....take it out and throw it in the trash and eat the cedar board."
This guy has said this to me for the past decade when the blues came in the Sound. 😂😂😂
I just discovered your channel from one of the saragosa videos. Now I'm hooked hehe.
Little bits of life advice, cooking and a whole lotta fishing action. Perfect!
Cheers from Malaysia!
We had days like that with king mackerel of the piers here in the Florida pan handle back in the day.
I love catching and cooking blues. So so strong! My pb is 18 LB. I think I lost one bigger last Spring. It was a fun time tho. 😂
What a great, healthy and delicious meal. You nailed it. When fish is fresh, no matter if it’s bluefish, snapper, or even a jack, it’s going to be good. You kept it simple, as you should with fresh fish. Just a little salt, pepper, oil, and a squirt of lemon is all you need.
Ryan, thank you for your service! And thank you to Christina for her service at the hospital =DAppreciate the life lesson speech there, super cool for you to share all that. A lot of young men need to hear it
See?? I be giving you videos some love! When you were out tuna fishing with Kurt Tillman, that was me on the phone that randomly called while you guys were filleting hehehe
God bless
Great video Ryan! Some beautiful blues caught. That was an amazing plate of food. You’ve really stepped up your skills!
Thanks for sharing!!!
A new video on leap day! Wow, we really must be lucky😋
We were catching these like crazy a couple weeks ago, freaking awesome
Love the pier videos there always fun to watch can’t wait till summer
Glad you like them!
Big Jack's are so fun! Such power houses that will fight you to the end! So much power and so fast! They can rips some drag out in a heart beat!
Summer time in South Portugal we get huge schools of blue fish, not as big as these ones tho.
Its an hard fighting fish and for sure my favourite fish to eat in the ocean.
We just scale and climb them and they are ready to go to the grill, awsome video once again.
Greetins from Portugal
That's incredible that you're watching from over there! Tight lines my friend!
I have caught Gator Blues from Long Island, N.Y. down to South New Jersey. They fight like hell. They also taste good if they are bled and cleaned properly. You are delivering GREAT content Ryan. Keep it up. I enjoy your love of fishing.
CANT WAIT TILL IM CATCHING THESE IN NY!!!!!!!!!
We love your content! regards from Germany
I Love Your Videos Ryan!🤗
Great episode!!
I’m from south florida too and I love fishing especially at juno beach and now i’m working towards a degree at UCF. I miss fishing but I guess I have to find new hobbies for the future.
Back in the 60’ in Va when massive schools of these Gator Blues would infiltrate the Chesapeake Bay my Dad would harvest and sell 100’s of pounds Bluefish that ended up on the Sunday brunch of restaurants around Yorktown and Hampton Va.People loved it and it continued for many years. The fish was always fresh and taken great care of.
Major Chaos, in high-volume🎣🎣
Also SMOKED blue fish are amazing! Makes for one hell of a fish dip!
If you're looking for lures that cast far, and have the presentation of the gt ice cream you were talking about, look into a jig stick and some surface irons. Some of the best include kicker 25l, salas 7x, tady 45, starman 112, jri stinger, jri-dw1, and the jri-4. They're generally used for yellowtail and tuna in Southern California, but after explaining what you wanted out of your lure I believe these will fit that perfectly.
That smaller, average ~2# blue is the size you want to eat it, especially if you bleed it fully or clean it right after your catch. Keep your lines tight, Juno Ryan.
Hi Ryan, I really enjoy watching your videos. I am a new subscriber from Indonesia.
Favorite video so far great job 👍
Thanks brother!
3 fish 1 net! Epic! All the boys are out there!
Yessir! Thanks for watching!
Semper Fi Brother! Glad I found your channel! I'm a Texas fisherman, if you're ever in Corpus Christi and want to fish on a boat. Let me know. I always welcome a fellow Marine to join me, fishing.
🇺🇸 Semper Fi!
Very good fishing. Strike many big fishes. Very good cooking. Very delicious foods. I watch upto finish your video my friend. Full watching.
Nice Blues! Cool to see them in south FL. I'm from the northeast and we get them all the time. A great recipe is to completely coat the meat in mayonnaise then sprinkle with salt/pepper, and taragon then throw lemon slices on and bake it. The mayonnaise will bake off and remove a good amount of the oil so it is a much better experience haha. Nice lunkers man!
Ryan, another awesome video.... Great job..
I appreciate you watching my friend!
Around the 5-10lb mark is the BEST bluefish without a question
I lived in CT for a long time and caught lots of big blues and stripes. I started bleeding them with a cut at the tail and gills as soon as I caught them. When fileting, float your knife like you did to get the rest of the dark meat, use paul prudhomme blackened redfish seasoning to do a light blackened bluefish.
Great video Ryan. I have eaten the smaller Bluefish. I would imagine it would be good smoked. The pier looked insane for a minute and those bigger blues look like they can fight.
Stay safe out there brother.
Thanks for watching Ed!
Awesome man, when i tried going to juno pier a little past mullet run the conditions were like this except nobody caught anything
Cliffy in the jack gaff! I’m jealous!
Glad to see ya back on the pier. Well even if the bluefish is not that great taste wise you have some yellowfin to fall back on ;-) keep up the good work and have a great day Ryan.
Thanks for watching! Also, the bluefish was excellent!
Glad to hear it! @@RyanMorie
its crazy how little those big ones fight down there. they fight like kings up north
Great video! The blood meat is great bait.
I caught a pair of those Blues along the Space Coast a few weeks ago They have amazing green eyes
Bluefish have actually been pretty scarce for about 20 years in the mid atlantic. From the 60's to the 90s they were king of the ocean. Partyboats would bring in thousands every day. The surf fall blitzes would run September till Thanksgiving. All your arms could handle. I haven't seen a blitz on the beach for at least 20 years in New Jersey. Partyboats haven't bothered fishing for them for about the same amount of time. There have been signs lately though that they may be starting a coming back.
I’ve been told that Jacks are very good
On the F150 issue: I suggest very closely inspecting the main fuses usually close to the battery that power up almost everything in the vehicle. We’ve found some Fords in our fleet with a CRACKED (not blown) fuse that causes an intermittent issue like the one you’re having. Best of luck and a Semper Fi brother
Blue Fish is called Ancho in Trinidad, that fish is my absolute favorite fish..i love that it is oily, its also great in a soup...i love it
My simple favorite recipe for Kingfish and Bluefish is, first lay out a big enough sheet of foil to completely wrap your filet in a package, thinly slice bell pepper and onions add salt ground pepper, and garlic powder to the filet, add a dollop of Mayo and smear a light coating over the fillet, place vegetable slices to the foil, place fish on top and wrap the foil tight in a sealed package flip vegetable side up so it is on top bake at 400 or put on moderate heated grill until done. The Mayo seems to kill that strong flavor of oily stronger fish, I ate a lot of Mackeral and Bluefish growing up in Pompano, it`s an old recipe. Thanks for the memories, some of the best days of my life fishing the piers and jetties of the East Coast. Oh and a fresh squeeze of lemon on the fish after cooking to personal taste.
So adding more oil is the solution 😮?😂
The Mayo neutralizes the strong fishy taste, no joke rub Mayo on King. Blue or Mackerel fillets before putting them under the broiler to@@bigdoggstatus99
Still live in pompano?
I love blues!
I'm in my 60's and I have always eaten bluefish jack crevalle barracuda and others since my early teens they're good no issue with me I don't use the term trash fish. Oh and just because I don't care to cook I just fry or broil them
I don't know about your truck, but it makes me appreciate my 1996 Dodge Dakota.
Amazing content, had to subscribe. Hopefully one day i get this far.
"thats the mahi from japan" got me good 22:32
Cloves are the dried flower buds from a Myrtle Tree. It's an evergreen that is related to Eucalyptus, Allspice and Rum Tree. Originally from Indonesia and other spots in southeast Asia.
Btw. Try using bluefish in your chowder. The strong flavor is actually complemented by the cream, quahogs and rendered pork belly. Most importantly, you need to bleed that fish while it's alive right at the dock. Slit the gills and the tail right away. Since they're still flipping around, they push all the blood out of the arteries on both sides.
Those Van Stall reels really are popular in the U.S for shore casting.
Although my trips to Hillsboro for my offshore fishing, never produced any blues, my OC MD trips have. One thing I do is salt brine for a few hours after removing all blood, then drain, and over night marinade the fillets in soy sauce. Then cook or bake it anyways you prefer
There's nothing like fishing elbow to elbows on a fishing pier lol❤😂 chaos
Almost 100k let’s goooooo. where did you buy that pulley from for the fishing gear?
Oh man, almost forgot about this channel. Really only watch the pier ones 😅
Glad I had something for you 🍻
We use blue fish and jacks for crab traps bait.
Great video my guy. What I’ve usually seen with the situation with your truck is bad ground connection. With all the new electronics in vehicles now it could be any number of things. Can’t wait to see the blues as they move back north through canaveral. Keep up the great work.
Hope they come to NY/NJ
I grew up on the piers. I loved being a pier rat when I was a kid
blue fish are really good eating when fresh and are pound for pound one of the hardest fighting fish you'll find on the beach or pier. Here is a tip, because its such an oily fish they are great smoked..think smoked fish dip.
Yep. Foresure. I love fried bluefish when assessed properly by bleeding & icing right away. I think alot of people sleep on blues. Especially some floridians. Im a native floridian myself & ofcourse my fav & perferred fish to eat is snook but even tho blues is more of an up north fish to eat l still will be happy to eat some fresh fried blue any time. I love it. Ive actually turned several people onto it before when they were certain it was trash. Now they think differently
I thought that until I cooked one on the grill 20 minutes after catching it. It was delicious.
I love bluefish''I leave the skin on and put sliced red and white onions, red or green peppers, sliced fresh garlic sliced tomatoes and put it under the broiler and cook it like a steak;;Sqeeze your lemon on at the end.Whte wine drizzled on top before cooking it.Vegies keep it from burning the fish, also fresh parsely is good.Enjoy''
Awesome video ryan if you ever cook Bluefish again i heard letting the filets sit in milk overnight will kill some of the gameness but that fish looked awesome tightlines Brother🤙🏻
Actually it didn't have a "gamey" flavor. We used to do that with mackerel back in the day, but I've changed my mind on it. I think proper icing and eating fresh is the "cure all"
Dude. Your key fob
Battery is likely dying. Happened to my 2014 f150 (I had to get towed bc mine died an hour from my house). My other key worked fine, and ford replaced the battery inside the key so the original one went right back to working. Good luck!
If it been a rod, I’m interested in catching it. Love your videos
Best way I've cooked them here in NC is two ways.
1. Season with Everglades fish and chicken after cutting into small fillets. Batter with medium hot chicken breader and lightly fry. Put in the fridge overnight. The next day, pull all apart, mix in Dukes mayo, sweet pickles diced, some sugar and salt and pepper. Tastes like chicken salad the 1st day. Second day it will taste more of the fish flavor.
2. Brine and smoke your big fillets like you would a king mackeral, and make a dip. It's delicious.
We call Bluefish, Taylor here and they are great smoked.
RE: Your truck. Since it wouldn't unlock with the key fob, I assume some kind of anti-theft kicked in and didn't let you start the truck. I would check the battery in the key fob, make sure that it isn't dead. Ford truck usually have the keypad on the door, try that next time because it should disable the anti-theft as well.
Mine unfortunately doesn’t have a keypad, but the anti-theft hypothesis is a good one. I might try starting it from the mobile app next time
Here in NC when we get the big blues in I like to cook them like I do stripers, which is deep fried chucks. Cut them into 2x2 chunks and deep fry them in a hot hot oil. I feel like the hot cooking oil displaces the fish oils and takes away some of that oil fishy flavor. However we just fry the smaller ones with your favorite seafood breader mix, ours happens to be a Cajun breader. All personal preference obviously but bulefish in my opinion is not a junk fish.
G'Day Mate, we call them tailor in southern Australia. they are fantastic hot smoked, grilled or with a curry. we get them much smaller in size.
Fish curry is where its at for tailor and bonito. These American blokes seem to get lots more big tailor than anywhere over here.
fish curry sounds like a great idea!
I truly agree that you need to ice your fish as soon as possible
If Bluefish are handling correctly and prepared right they are a delicious eating fish.
You may have a bad connection with the wires that connect the security system to the battery. My wife had an issue very similar to that and I had to take the eyelet connector off because, whoever put it on the first time didn't strip the wires enough, so I cut their connection off restriped the wire, and added my own eyelet wire connector, and have not had a problem with it since, and that's been over 2yrs now.
Here in NC 5lbers are easy. On obx weve caught dozens at 15 pounds plus in a day
I've been subbed to you for years but never really watched you. This video was fantastic. Filmed and put together very well. Many things I agree with you on and some I disagree with you on. Never been to Florida, hell never been further south on the east coast than Hatteras NC. We either tossed blues back or used them for bait(very good bait), but we did an inshore charter one time and caught blues and told the captain just to toss em back and he was dumbfounded. We said how we'd freeze them and take them home and they were awful eating. He told us to take them back to the rental and eat them within the next three days and your mind will be blown. He was right, we cooked them up that night or the next night and they were phenomenal. They were average blues, not monsters like in your video. They probably went 10-18 inches. I don't think I'd keep one over 22-24 inches. But I've never even caught one that big lol so who knows.
I'm a believer in throw the little fish and big fish back. Let the small fish grow and let the big fish breed. Take what you need from the mid range fish. In virtually every fish and even animal, you're going to get a better quality meat from smaller and younger specimens unless their meat is fatty. If you harvest too much from the small range than that can endanger the species, at least if everyone does the same.
Over the years I also learned about properly bleeding and icing fish and realistically all meat. That grows ever more important with larger fish. I had a 24 inch channel cat once and it was pretty much inedible due to tasting so bad. Nearly a decade later they were draining that lake for a dam replacement so I fished it hard and got a few 28 inch channel catfish. I figured it would be a disaster but I didn't want to waste the fish and let them rot on the bottom of a dry muddy lake. I took what I learned and bled them, iced them immediately and took them home. I cut off any yellow or red in the fillets which was fat and bloodline. That was some of the best fish I've ever eaten.
Also you took a shot at pompano saying they are overrated. How dare you?? lol. They are absolutely fantastic table fare. The only issue I encountered is they also have a massive bloodline that becomes even more pronounced that they grow.
You're awesome for watching! These fish were great and everyone I talked to that ate one liked it as well. Pompano is good, just not as good as everyone makes them out to be!
What set-up are you using ?
In Australia we call "Bluefish" "Tailor". They are popular and highly sought after table fish, not "trash fish" at all. You just need to bleed them as soon as you get them to get a cleaner taste.
If they aren't bled they have an unpleasant flavour. It's extremely bizarre to me that anyone would label them "trash fish".
Great vid man. What's the lure you were using for the blues??
I thought I heard him say what it was called close to the beginning of the video. Can't remember the time though.
@@jeremybrinlee1965
I'll have to double check. Thanks
They love to run under the pier and break u off. 😂😂 I enjoy the fight, so I try not to horse them all the way in. Smaller reel, lots of patience. By the time they get close they’re fone.
You should beheld the blue fish and jacks o make them taste better
hey the truck thing happened to me but on a ram and it didnt go away. they said it was a body control module if I remember right. big lues I would season a day ahead and bake with a coating of mayo. I only tried this once or twice as I would usually only keep smaller ones.
meant blues sorry missed the b
I wrote my comment before the cooking portion. haha
My dream fish to catch would be a jack!
Is this lure all metal? Or plastic shell with metal inside?
Smaller bluefish are the best eating, both for taste and because they have accumulated fewer chemicals
Ive had that issue b4. It was the anti-theft system
Ok South Florida,is it Sebastian ?
fun fact blue fish are very desirable fish(sort of delicacy) ,its over fished our bag limit for the day is 3 fish
Juno beach my old stomping grounds
What month of the yr are blues best doen there? Great contact sir!
The big ones were around in December and January. The small ones are around October to April
What rods are you using
lb for lb what fight harder, jack or bluefish? we catch the blues here in CT during the summer, they eat good when you prepare them the right way.
Jacks for sure, but bluefish are much more aggressive
@@RyanMorie Very interesting!! thanks brother
Great video as always!
My go to way to cook bluefish is the cedar plank method. Soak the fish overnight in Italian dressing. Put them on a plank then grill for 20 minutes. Allow to cool, remove the fish and eat the plank instead 😂
Y’all are killing me with these 😂
If you get tailor bleed immediately get them on ice and they’re very nice
