Hi Liam, well you will be used to camping, just means when your wild camping you have to carry everything, certainly makes you lighten your pack. The great thing is that you can camp basically where you want, have the place to yourself and some great views, enjoy your wild camping in the future all the best Pat
I now live in the Peak District myself, near black rocks and am having a great time discovering and photographing the many natural attractions in the county. A 5 day hike in the Pyrenees and 5 days doing Hadrians wall and 5 days in The Lake District last year has made me appreciate the merit of minimal, lightweight kit. My set up is very similar to your own. I use a Jack Wolfskin Gossamer bivi tent (in the moss green colour similar to your Rab) and water boiling duties are taken care of by a 1.0 litre MSR Reactor. I always carry 2 litres of water. I use a Rab merino wool base layer, Rab Polartec Neoshell soft shell outer with an optional Rab Pertex Microlight mid layer for when I stop moving. I also use a Rab silk sleeping bag liner, Vango Planet 150 sleeping bag, ThermaRest Z-lite mat. I also pack a Rab Element Solo tarp. I use a Bushcraft Essentials Titanium stove for cooking food and providing evening entertainment, fueled by vaseline, and cotton wool and natural dried wood collected around me with an MSR titanium pot for pasta and pesto. Lastly a Lowe Alpine Axiom Kamet 75 litre pack holds it all together on my back. Thanks for your great video. Bring on the Spring!
+Matt Bradley Hi Matt your kit list is certainly a well thought out lightweight kit if you imagine what you would have carried 20 years ago. Its not until you have walked several miles with 20 lb on your back that you start looking for ways to shed some pounds. I was hoping for some snow to do some winter wild camping but apart from the bit we have just had I now wonder if we will get any decent snowfall this year. Yes I like this simple blokey approach and presenter would be an ideal walking / camping companion. Did I miss it or did our friend neglect to mention a small trenching tool ( foldable ally as I have ) or trowel for toilet hole digging ?
Patrick - Well thought out equipment and nice presentation too. I like bivy bags also. I just picked up a Rab Assault bivy. The end just hangs open (no pole) and does have mesh to keep the bugs out. I sometimes hang a small tarp (about 300 grams) over the bivy entrance to keep rain out. That lets me keep better ventilation and not have to zip up too tight on the entrance. Patrick, thanks for this it's been a big help to me. This weekend we wild camped up by Kinder Downfall and decided everything felt a bit on the heavy side. Sure enough, when I got back on weighing my pack I discovered that with food and water I was carrying 32 lbs. that's when I discovered you and your films, I now see where I went wrong. Hi Stuart At least you were out camping and from that experience I,am sure you will find ways to reduce pack weight. The heavy bits I found were tent,sleeping bag and pack itsel, reduce these then look at stuff you don,t really need. I have sort of the 'ancestor' to the Ridge Raider-the Integral Designs Mega Sola. Fairly light, very weather resistant, super easy set-up, and, owing to the olive green color, good for stealth camping. Great videos you make, Patrick.

to be honest Pat it was a disaster, like everything it has its place. i think the bivi is for exactly your use light and distance, just somewhere to get your head down at the end of the day. It was too windy and i think the one i used was far too small for me, but i shall do some research and look for a bigger one. Thanks Mark.

Thanks Pat. My biggest mistake was carrying 3 litres of water and wet food. They, combined weigh more than anything else in my pack. I've ordered a Sawyer water filter since returning and will look at everything else as you suggest.

Another great film , how ever I dont like hooped bivis think they are really dangerous , as a former army medic I have seen to many guys set up their bivis then through exhaustion fall a sleep in to their stove as they are cooking ,easily done just have a quick cig whist your rations boil then - bang you a sleep , I full appreciate about light weight camping Im back in to it my self but you really must have a tent you can sit up in and sort your personal admin out sat up , for the sake of weight are u really gaining using a bivi rather than a tent to save a mear kilo ?? just an opinion here and by no means been negative this is a well put together tutorial i'm just of the old school old man now mentality of expect the best - prepare for the worst ,

The material was bought from Pennine Outdoor you will find it on the internet, it is identified as P2GR material a 2 oz coated nylon weight about 90 gms per m2. I basically made a paper pattern cut the material about 20mm oversize then sewed a hem all the way round. I then sewed 6 webbing loops on so the footprint could be pegged out using the same Rab Ridge Raider pegging points. Hope this helpful best of luck Pat

Hello Patrick, Congratulations for the videos. I'm thinking about buying the Rab bivvy. I've got the Uber from Miles Gear but I find it very bulky and noisy. I'm looking for something more lean but with enought space not to lose confort. Can you comment on its internal size? I tend use much space when sleeping with legs well opened. What about its waterproofness? Can it stand quite heavy rains in case you are suddenly caught by it at night and don´t have time to throw a tarp over it? I read a review on the Rab website saying that the floor material lets water in a bit. keep posting! Thank you, Thiago
Hi ThaigoThe Rab Ridge Raider bivvy is quite roomy inside I,am 5 foot 10 inch and slim build and find it very roomy inside, length wise plenty of room at bottom. The top area I find I have room for various bits of gear all my filming equip and various bits of clothing, I store my rucksack and boots outside. So on the whole I would say its pretty roomy. As for waterproofness I pick and choose when to bivvy as it would be a pain to cook etc if rainy so never used it in heavy rain, also never had any problems with any water coming in. Hi Alan just looked back at similar question I had. I made the footprint out of a material bought on line from Pennine Outdoor. The fabric is a 2 oz coated nylon identified as P2GR if they still produce it. Basically made a paper pattern, cut the fabric 20mm oversize so I could sew a hem all the way round. I then sewed 6x webbing loops on, 6 elasticated loops would be a good idea, then pegged it out using the biv vy pegs. Hope this helpfull all the best Pat
Very good video. Can you tell me if the pegs are very strong, or should I buy stronger ones? also, have you any experience of using a foam Army mat? Do you recommend taking a rubber mallet for pegs? Thanks. June
+130June Hi June the pegs that came with the Rab ridge Raider are adequate for pegging out the bivvy as they do not have to do much just hold everything in place. I would not use a mallet due to carrying the weight, a handy stone or your foot should push them in OK . I have used a foam mat years ago but they are bulky and very hard to sleep on. Hi David if you are walking up Kinder scout then you will want lightweight gear but not so lightweight that it does,nt keep you warm, its finding a happy medium between weight and comfort. The mat I mentioned is a Vaude Norrsken sleeping mat I think mine is a short one to fit in my bivvy bag. They are reasonable strong I always put a foil mat underneath , more for protection than warmth, don,t think I showed it on my video. I ,am not sure if you can get a double hopefully when you find it on the web there will be more information, hope helpful all the best Pat

Hi Not yet I, ve used it in freezing conditions but not in snowfall, I tend to pick dryer days to go as the rain or snow makes cooking etc difficult. You would be OK to bivvy on the snow and be alright with light snowfall. If the snow was heavy the weight would flatten the bivvy bag and your sleeping bag and not allow it to loft. alot of snow might bury as low profile.Would be interesting to find out I might try it next winter for the fun of it. I prefer the original Jack Wolfskin Gossamer, dont like tho the updated Gossamer. Packs bigger because realistic about bag sizes, and very good groundsheet.

Hi Louie I have never used a tarp with my ridge raider bivvy, but I pick and choose my weather when I go out and tend to just use it when its dry. If it was raining then would be uncomfortable cooking outside in rain so tarp would be useful, but when you weigh up the weight of the bivvy and tarp then a lightweight tent might make more sense. on the whole a great bivvy, but perhaps limited to fine weather. hope useful all the best Pat
Hi Tony I try and use lightweight gear when wild camping as I have to carry it and rely on it in bad weather, but for general knocking about in woods, fishing etc then you can,t beat the quality of ex WD gear, I have several camo jackets some I,ve had since I was a lad, my German parka is the warmest coat I have you can, t beat it for quality materials and zips buttons etc, all the best Pat

+Hupie McGillis Hi Hupie, I think the bivvy would be a bit small for you I,am 5 10 and 160 lb so it suits me fine to sleep in. There,s nowhere to store gear that has to be kept outside in waterproof stuff sack. Its not that straight forward to get in like sliding into a pipe, but once your in its warm and comfy and I get a great nights sleep. There maybe some larger bags available, the bigger the bag the more weight though. Hope this helpful, thanks Pat
Hi Jai, basically, made a paper template under the bivvy, cut the groundsheet 25mm oversize, hemmed it all the way round, and sewed on 6 elastic loops to fasten to pegs, just like the footprint's they make, thanks Pat
It was a material I bought from Point North or Pennine Outdoor specifically for lightweight groundsheets, probably like 4 oz PU but more flexible, somewhere in all these comments is the actual material because I have been asked before, thanks Pat
Hi Peter. You don't need and protection as the bathtub bottom is pretty durable. I've used mine loads. Just clear the ground well. You could always go for a cheap foam pad below it as well as your quality airbed inside if you liked. Extra comfort for the same or little more weight than an extra durable ground sheet. btw I never peg mine out or take guy lines. I just get in it as soon as the pole is in place while still standing and then lay down. As soon as I'm out of it in the morning its packed away. I tried a bivi with no poles....too closed in. I tried the Ridge Raider with the excellent pegs but it was just not necessary unless you need to leave your shelter set up. I don't. Hope this helps someone. John

+lromeroyt Hi my wife and two sons ask me the same question.I basically do it for the feeling of adventure, for the challenge of doing something different, for just the fun of it ,for being outside in the countryside, for building up your kit and trying to keep it lightweight but comfortable, for the fantastic views at night as well as in the day, and for keeping fit so I hopefully will live a bit longer, the day when I can,t walk 20 miles will be a sad one as it means I,am getting old. enjoyed watching someone else, doing the work, for a change, the army made a completely waterproof sleeping bag, with a hood, dont know whether you can still get them, havnt looked, they make a sleeping mat with a built in pump, you pump it with the palms of your hands, way better than going dizzy blowing it up, i made my own burner, based on the old paraffin heater, uses any flammable liquid, a couple of old tins and a built in wick, you pour the liquid in the middle, the wick soaks it up, you dont need a lot, you just drop a lighted match into the middle, and once it warms up, its like cooking on a gas ring, small lightweight and when you want to put it out, you just cut off the air to the middle bit, they do sell similar ones now but my design is better, and, i beat them to it, ha ha, the advantage of working in engineering all that time, and only cost a few pence and a bit of savvy

you wont believe it, was just looking, at a vietnam pilots survival pack, and inside, is curtain netting mosquito protective, hand and arm covering, also one to go over your head, they beat me to the idea, theirs was black

Bivi bags suck heavy no room ,only saving grace is the size once up harder to see, I have two tents the same weight as that bivi no contest really way better in the wet a ton more room to get changed etc.
+Phill Wallace Hi Phill, when I started backpacking years ago my rucksack was around 25 lb but over years with new gear I have slowly reduced the weight although some of the lightweight gear is very expensive. iIthink a lightweight tent and sleeping bag reduce the main weight and don,t forget the pack itself 3 lb can be saved here and then slowly try and lighten up your other gear. +Patrick Dickinson most of the time have done alpine trips so need lots of other gear but we will see if i can do some lighter trips this summer, carrying water is nearly 12lbs thou lol just started tramping this year so still got a lot of stuff to get my tent & sleeping bag are both 600g heavier than yours so can save some weight there may get a summer bag at some stage we will see but you can get tents pretty close to 1kg so seems like a better option, i just have a really basic 600g bivy at the moment in case of getting caught out going to a hut =P other people i've seen use them get pretty wet from contention maybe in mid summer they might be a bit nicer
+Phill Wallace 5kg of water? I use a Sawyer mini water filter - can be used to drink straight from a stream or refill your water bottle/bag. Fantastic piece of kit - only thing it can't filter is dissolved chemicals (ie. don't take water that is running off a farmer's field!)
+MrHairyTeabag on some trips here you wont really find any water so have to carry it about like 3,4 litres, on other trips you can be drinking from streams hourly so only need 1 litre or two, don't think many people bother using filters etc here much unless it was on farmers land normally just drink straight from rivers or tarns & look highly disappointed apon running water when on farmers land
if i wanted to take the absolute minimum it would be, swiss army knife a ball of string large plastic sheet with built in eyelets something to start a fire a small led torch 2 liters of water, and a large tin cup, ide make my own tent poles and securing pegs out of wood now you know why, i like wooded areas, minimum medical kit including sutures scissors and tweezers and antiseptic cream, and wide elastic bandage large, and some night light candles, ive always got folding scissors and tin opener on my keyring anyway, luxury item toilet paper and a completely foldable spade, that has its own pouch and goes on your belt, the edge of which includes a wood saw yep army issue, if i was going somewhere where i couldnt have a fire my home built stove and fuel, and of course, a spoon for stirring and eating, my plastic sheet doubles as a waterproof coverall, bung that lot in a framed rucksack, its got a wide strap, sits on your lower back if, i was taking a sleeping bag, it would go on top, behind my head, dead leaves bracken make a good mattress and pillow, if you dont like blue or green plastic, camouflage it with paints, shades of greens and browns work well, just blob them on randomly, flat rather than gloss works best, god thats a mouthful, ive left out the obvious attire if i was in your area i would adjust it accordingly

Hi Liam, well you will be used to camping, just means when your wild camping you have to carry everything, certainly makes you lighten your pack. The great thing is that you can camp basically where you want, have the place to yourself and some great views, enjoy your wild camping in the future all the best Pat
I now live in the Peak District myself, near black rocks and am having a great time discovering and photographing the many natural attractions in the county. A 5 day hike in the Pyrenees and 5 days doing Hadrians wall and 5 days in The Lake District last year has made me appreciate the merit of minimal, lightweight kit. My set up is very similar to your own. I use a Jack Wolfskin Gossamer bivi tent (in the moss green colour similar to your Rab) and water boiling duties are taken care of by a 1.0 litre MSR Reactor. I always carry 2 litres of water. I use a Rab merino wool base layer, Rab Polartec Neoshell soft shell outer with an optional Rab Pertex Microlight mid layer for when I stop moving. I also use a Rab silk sleeping bag liner, Vango Planet 150 sleeping bag, ThermaRest Z-lite mat. I also pack a Rab Element Solo tarp. I use a Bushcraft Essentials Titanium stove for cooking food and providing evening entertainment, fueled by vaseline, and cotton wool and natural dried wood collected around me with an MSR titanium pot for pasta and pesto. Lastly a Lowe Alpine Axiom Kamet 75 litre pack holds it all together on my back. Thanks for your great video. Bring on the Spring!

Its not until you have walked several miles with 20 lb on your back that you start looking for ways to shed some pounds. I was hoping for some snow to do some winter wild camping but apart from the bit we have just had I now wonder if we will get any decent snowfall this year. Patrick - Well thought out equipment and nice presentation too. I like bivy bags also. I just picked up a Rab Assault bivy. The end just hangs open (no pole) and does have mesh to keep the bugs out. I sometimes hang a small tarp (about 300 grams) over the bivy entrance to keep rain out. That lets me keep better ventilation and not have to zip up too tight on the entrance. Patrick, thanks for this it's been a big help to me. This weekend we wild camped up by Kinder Downfall and decided everything felt a bit on the heavy side. Sure enough, when I got back on weighing my pack I discovered that with food and water I was carrying 32 lbs.

Hi Stuart At least you were out camping and from that experience I,am sure you will find ways to reduce pack weight. The heavy bits I found were tent,sleeping bag and pack itsel, reduce these then look at stuff you don,t really need. to be honest Pat it was a disaster, like everything it has its place. i think the bivi is for exactly your use light and distance, just somewhere to get your head down at the end of the day. It was too windy and i think the one i used was far too small for me, but i shall do some research and look for a bigger one.

Thanks Pat. My biggest mistake was carrying 3 litres of water and wet food. They, combined weigh more than anything else in my pack. I've ordered a Sawyer water filter since returning and will look at everything else as you suggest.

Another great film , how ever I dont like hooped bivis think they are really dangerous , as a former army medic I have seen to many guys set up their bivis then through exhaustion fall a sleep in to their stove as they are cooking ,easily done just have a quick cig whist your rations boil then - bang you a sleep , I full appreciate about light weight camping Im back in to it my self but you really must have a tent you can sit up in and sort your personal admin out sat up , for the sake of weight are u really gaining using a bivi rather than a tent to save a mear kilo ?? just an opinion here and by no means been negative this is a well put together tutorial i'm just of the old school old man now mentality of expect the best - prepare for the worst ,

+Arctutus1 Hi Trev glad you enjoyed videos I really enjoy making them. The footprint for the Rab Ridge Raider I made myself. The material was bought from Pennine Outdoor you will find it on the internet, it is identified as P2GR material a 2 oz coated nylon weight about 90 gms per m2. I basically made a paper pattern cut the material about 20mm oversize then sewed a hem all the way round. I then sewed 6 webbing loops on so the footprint could be pegged out using the same Rab Ridge Raider pegging points. Hope this helpful best of luck Pat

I'm thinking about buying the Rab bivvy. I've got the Uber from Miles Gear but I find it very bulky and noisy. I'm looking for something more lean but with enought space not to lose confort. Can you comment on its internal size? I tend use much space when sleeping with legs well opened. What about its waterproofness? Can it stand quite heavy rains in case you are suddenly caught by it at night and don´t have time to throw a tarp over it? I read a review on the Rab website saying that the floor material lets water in a bit.

Hi ThaigoThe Rab Ridge Raider bivvy is quite roomy inside I,am 5 foot 10 inch and slim build and find it very roomy inside, length wise plenty of room at bottom. The top area I find I have room for various bits of gear all my filming equip and various bits of clothing, I store my rucksack and boots outside. So on the whole I would say its pretty roomy. As for waterproofness I pick and choose when to bivvy as it would be a pain to cook etc if rainy so never used it in heavy rain, also never had any problems with any water coming in. Hi Alan just looked back at similar question I had. I made the footprint out of a material bought on line from Pennine Outdoor. The fabric is a 2 oz coated nylon identified as P2GR if they still produce it. Basically made a paper pattern, cut the fabric 20mm oversize so I could sew a hem all the way round. I then sewed 6x webbing loops on, 6 elasticated loops would be a good idea, then pegged it out using the biv vy pegs. Hope this helpfull all the best Pat

+130June Hi June the pegs that came with the Rab ridge Raider are adequate for pegging out the bivvy as they do not have to do much just hold everything in place. I would not use a mallet due to carrying the weight, a handy stone or your foot should push them in OK . I have used a foam mat years ago but they are bulky and very hard to sleep on.

I like your foot print idea. Did you make that (cut to shape) and stitch in the tabs for the pegs?? What material and how was it measured - (i.e. did you cut some material around the erected bivvy?). Is it just tarp material?
The footprint looks like it's a dedicated Rab Ridge Raider footprint. Not a home made one.

Hi David if you are walking up Kinder scout then you will want lightweight gear but not so lightweight that it does,nt keep you warm, its finding a happy medium between weight and comfort. The mat I mentioned is a Vaude Norrsken sleeping mat I think mine is a short one to fit in my bivvy bag. They are reasonable strong I always put a foil mat underneath , more for protection than warmth, don,t think I showed it on my video. I ,am not sure if you can get a double hopefully when you find it on the web there will be more information, hope helpful all the best Pat

Have you tried the bivvy in snow conditions? I'm wondering how would it hold up.
Hi Not yet I, ve used it in freezing conditions but not in snowfall, I tend to pick dryer days to go as the rain or snow makes cooking etc difficult. You would be OK to bivvy on the snow and be alright with light snowfall. If the snow was heavy the weight would flatten the bivvy bag and your sleeping bag and not allow it to loft. alot of snow might bury as low profile.Would be interesting to find out I might try it next winter for the fun of it. Hi Louie I have never used a tarp with my ridge raider bivvy, but I pick and choose my weather when I go out and tend to just use it when its dry. If it was raining then would be uncomfortable cooking outside in rain so tarp would be useful, but when you weigh up the weight of the bivvy and tarp then a lightweight tent might make more sense. on the whole a great bivvy, but perhaps limited to fine weather. hope useful all the best Pat

Hi Tony I try and use lightweight gear when wild camping as I have to carry it and rely on it in bad weather, but for general knocking about in woods, fishing etc then you can,t beat the quality of ex WD gear, I have several camo jackets some I,ve had since I was a lad, my German parka is the warmest coat I have you can, t beat it for quality materials and zips buttons etc, all the best Pat

+Hupie McGillis Hi Hupie, I think the bivvy would be a bit small for you I,am 5 10 and 160 lb so it suits me fine to sleep in. There,s nowhere to store gear that has to be kept outside in waterproof stuff sack. Its not that straight forward to get in like sliding into a pipe, but once your in its warm and comfy and I get a great nights sleep. There maybe some larger bags available, the bigger the bag the more weight though. Hope this helpful, thanks Pat
How did you make your bivi footprint ?
Hi Jai, basically, made a paper template under the bivvy, cut the groundsheet 25mm oversize, hemmed it all the way round, and sewed on 6 elastic loops to fasten to pegs, just like the footprint's they make, thanks Pat

It was a material I bought from Point North or Pennine Outdoor specifically for lightweight groundsheets, probably like 4 oz PU but more flexible, somewhere in all these comments is the actual material because I have been asked before, thanks Pat

Hi Peter. You don't need and protection as the bathtub bottom is pretty durable. I've used mine loads. Just clear the ground well. You could always go for a cheap foam pad below it as well as your quality airbed inside if you liked. Extra comfort for the same or little more weight than an extra durable ground sheet. btw I never peg mine out or take guy lines. I just get in it as soon as the pole is in place while still standing and then lay down. As soon as I'm out of it in the morning its packed away. I tried a bivi with no poles....too closed in. I tried the Ridge Raider with the excellent pegs but it was just not necessary unless you need to leave your shelter set up. I don't. Hope this helps someone. John

+lromeroyt Hi my wife and two sons ask me the same question.I basically do it for the feeling of adventure, for the challenge of doing something different, for just the fun of it ,for being outside in the countryside, for building up your kit and trying to keep it lightweight but comfortable, for the fantastic views at night as well as in the day, and for keeping fit so I hopefully will live a bit longer, the day when I can,t walk 20 miles will be a sad one as it means I,am getting old. enjoyed watching someone else, doing the work, for a change, the army made a completely waterproof sleeping bag, with a hood, dont know whether you can still get them, havnt looked, they make a sleeping mat with a built in pump, you pump it with the palms of your hands, way better than going dizzy blowing it up, i made my own burner, based on the old paraffin heater, uses any flammable liquid, a couple of old tins and a built in wick, you pour the liquid in the middle, the wick soaks it up, you dont need a lot, you just drop a lighted match into the middle, and once it warms up, its like cooking on a gas ring, small lightweight and when you want to put it out, you just cut off the air to the middle bit, they do sell similar ones now but my design is better, and, i beat them to it, ha ha, the advantage of working in engineering all that time, and only cost a few pence and a bit of savvy
WOLFROY47 yes I,vsseen some similar bivvy bag I find this set up very easy to carry, set up and the hoop keeps the fabric off your face. Your stove is a great piece of kit, Pat
you wont believe it, was just looking, at a vietnam pilots survival pack, and inside, is curtain netting mosquito protective, hand and arm covering, also one to go over your head, they beat me to the idea, theirs was black

Bivi bags suck heavy no room ,only saving grace is the size once up harder to see, I have two tents the same weight as that bivi no contest really way better in the wet a ton more room to get changed etc.

+Phill Wallace Hi Phill, when I started backpacking years ago my rucksack was around 25 lb but over years with new gear I have slowly reduced the weight although some of the lightweight gear is very expensive. iIthink a lightweight tent and sleeping bag reduce the main weight and don,t forget the pack itself 3 lb can be saved here and then slowly try and lighten up your other gear. +Patrick Dickinson most of the time have done alpine trips so need lots of other gear but we will see if i can do some lighter trips this summer, carrying water is nearly 12lbs thou lol just started tramping this year so still got a lot of stuff to get my tent & sleeping bag are both 600g heavier than yours so can save some weight there may get a summer bag at some stage we will see but you can get tents pretty close to 1kg so seems like a better option, i just have a really basic 600g bivy at the moment in case of getting caught out going to a hut =P other people i've seen use them get pretty wet from contention maybe in mid summer they might be a bit nicer
+Phill Wallace 5kg of water? I use a Sawyer mini water filter - can be used to drink straight from a stream or refill your water bottle/bag. Fantastic piece of kit - only thing it can't filter is dissolved chemicals (ie. don't take water that is running off a farmer's field!)
+MrHairyTeabag on some trips here you wont really find any water so have to carry it about like 3,4 litres, on other trips you can be drinking from streams hourly so only need 1 litre or two, don't think many people bother using filters etc here much unless it was on farmers land normally just drink straight from rivers or tarns & look highly disappointed apon running water when on farmers land

if i wanted to take the absolute minimum it would be, swiss army knife a ball of string large plastic sheet with built in eyelets something to start a fire a small led torch 2 liters of water, and a large tin cup, ide make my own tent poles and securing pegs out of wood now you know why, i like wooded areas, minimum medical kit including sutures scissors and tweezers and antiseptic cream, and wide elastic bandage large, and some night light candles, ive always got folding scissors and tin opener on my keyring anyway, luxury item toilet paper and a completely foldable spade, that has its own pouch and goes on your belt, the edge of which includes a wood saw yep army issue, if i was going somewhere where i couldnt have a fire my home built stove and fuel, and of course, a spoon for stirring and eating, my plastic sheet doubles as a waterproof coverall, bung that lot in a framed rucksack, its got a wide strap, sits on your lower back if, i was taking a sleeping bag, it would go on top, behind my head, dead leaves bracken make a good mattress and pillow, if you dont like blue or green plastic, camouflage it with paints, shades of greens and browns work well, just blob them on randomly, flat rather than gloss works best, god thats a mouthful, ive left out the obvious attire if i was in your area i would adjust it accordingly
