I'm Australian but went to college in America. U. Illinois in the late 80s and I got watch Walter Payton. In fact a few of my frat brothers felt it their civic duty to educate me on the subject. So I got a very personal view on the EFFECT Walter Payton had on people. Consider this: Look into any other professional league anywhere in the world and their most prestigious award is for playing that sport. In the NFL the most prestigious award isn't for playing sport its for community service. Many sports have awards for community service, but its only in the NFL that its the MOST prestigious award. Every time I think about Walter Payton I'm reminded of that great line from MLK about being judged by character not skin color. Look at what Walter inspired. It doesn't make the NFL perfect or saintly. Some of its issues with player welfare and behavior haven't been good, but its so far in front of most sports there's just no comparison. None of our pro-sports in Australia have an award that's given this level of prestige for community service. I don't know any other sport that does. I wish we had people like Andrew Whitworth among our pro-sportsmen and sports women. We probably have some but they don't get the same recognition. And maybe that's the difference with the NFL - it recognizes and promotes these people and the work they do.
Love big whitt but this going to be highlight of the rams season cause Lombardi trophy 🏆 coming to Cincy baby but we respect big whitworth as a young Bengal and the work he put in
Used to live next door to Andrew when I was a kid in our hometown of West Monroe Louisiana. For my 12th birthday he came over to my house to spend some time with me and my friends and it meant the world to all of us. Whenever he was in Cincinnati during the football season he always made sure we put his pool to use when he wasn’t there to use it. Incredible player and person. Congrats Andrew!!!
Listen, I’m sitting here.. at 1 am.. with a grilled Asiago chicken sandwich from Wendy’s because I got off work and went through my old store’s drive-thru.. I’m sitting here on Facebook and see the short “we made it big whit”.. so I decided to watch the full video and man.. I just can’t even fathom how warm my heart was by a man so humble… a man so giving… and a man who literally will not stop trying to give.. and to see him confronted by Derrick.. who let him know how much it meant to him that his inspiration and opportunity helped drive him to succeed… that’s a moment.. when your humility is genuinely acknowledged with proof of your hard work paying off.
Lifelong Bengals Fan.. one of my all-time favorites Andrew Whitworth. The Hall Of Fame would be all the better with this guy in it. The NFL should be grateful that this man is in their league.
Cheapskate Mike Brown should have never allowed Andrew Whitworth to Leave via Free Agency and Sign with The Rams!,Big Whit,Should have been a Bengal his Whole Career!,He is a Future NFL Hall of Famer!!!!,He is a Great Husband,Father, and Leader Wherever He Lives!!!!
Iam a ravens fan so I come in peace lol, but I couldn’t agree with you more about Andrew Whitworth! He is flat out amazing both on and off the field! Our division is the best in football and is full of good people .
He may be on the other side of my team now. But I will always root for Andrew Whitworth. Especially now in the super bowl. But what an amazing man and awesome speech. No matter what happens in the super bowl. Andrew Whitworth is the best
I'm a grown man of 41 years and watching this is making me tear up. What an absolutely amazing human being Andrew Whitworth is! Big heart on the field. Bigger heart off it. Congrats dude. A very worthy moment to celebrate! 👏🏾👏🏾
I’m a diehard Lions fan coming and rewatching this video after Barnes sealed the first Divisional round game we’ve made it to in my lifetime. I love the compassion that Whit showed and hope he understands what his impact truly has been on others.
That Barnet story man gave me chills in a great way! That was a special speech right there I will always remember!! GOD IS GREAT and we are all BLESSINGS!!!
Andrew whitworth is one of the kindest, smartest, greatest player currently in the NFL. Go big whit we live you in the rams community!! Bring it home! Your are great leader! Win!!
My oh my what a guy. One of the best orations I’ve ever heard. A tough man on the field a humble man off it. Good luck Andrew. Bring the Super Bowl home. From a Rams fan in England 🏴
Fun Fact: this is the first year when 2 players from each team thats in the super bowl won in the ceremony award. Rams: Kupp (OPOY) Whitworth (WPMOY) Bengals: Chase (OROY) Burrow (CPOY)
This guy Whitworth and guys like Stafford and others are why I will not be upset for a second if the Bengals lose. I met Andrew Whitworth in Cincinnati, seeing him on tv doesn't do him justice, he's the largest human being I've ever stood next to, dudes a beast.
Look up to this guy so much man. The way he handles himself and does whatever he can to make people smile and bless other people is the ultimate goal in life
Such a phenomenal human being. And that’s more than you can say about anything he accomplished as a player. He made an impact on the lives of PEOPLE. What an honor, I salute this man. Much RESPECT Andrew. Congrats 🎉
Andrew is a wonderful man. I was tearing up when he was first speaking but when he mentioned the Lions player, I lost it. He seems like he just genuinely cares. I can’t cheer for the Rams, but I can always cheer for this man and the goodness and caring he inspires. (I guess I won’t hold the fact he went to West Monroe High School against him, I went to a rival school in the same city, lol)
This guy is absolutely awesome! Never heard of him until the Super bowl this year (I guess because offensive linemen don't get much recognition), but he now well be my all time favorite player. God Bless you Andrew Whitworth!!!
True legend and SB Champ!! Everybody was talking about his speech that I had to go watch it. The look on Derrick Barnes face was special. To know Big Whit changed his life means so much to the little kid across the world who have dreams but don’t know how to pursue them and to have players come out and give them an ounce of hope is remarkable
This is the greatest award because you’re acknowledge for what you do on the field, but also awarded for being great off the field. Andrew you’re a truly remarkable individual for people like me who watch the game thinking how can I make a difference in this world that will make an impact! I guess you never know, just show up!! Rams nation!!! 💪🏾
This bring tears to my eyes we need more NFL players like him. Going in communities and giving back without expecting award or be praised for it he a hero in my eyes. 🤑❤️💯💔😜
Andrew! You just made me cry! Thank you for doing what you do! Being a inspiration to us all and a reminder that there is good in this world. I pray I can help out the way you do one day. That is my dream. You deserve this!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!! YOUR HUMBLENESS IS SO REVITALIZING!!!! I'M GLAD GOD PLACED YOU WHERE YOU ARE!!! CONTINUE TO DO WHAT YOU DO AND GOD WILL CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!😍😍
I miss him so much in Cincinnati. This gives me chills listening to his speech... goes to show this isn't just a football, it's about being a good person. Whitworth is the definition of what we should all strive to be. Gonna be hard cheering against him Sunday.
Crazy the people you touch without even realizing it. He eventually was able to realize his impact in life with Derrick Barnes. This award is a lot more valuable than any MVP OPOY DPOY ROY. I hope he get’s a ring Whit deserves it.
Growing up in central Illinois in the 90s I had the pleasure of being able to watch the then St. Louis Rams during their summer training camps. I wasn’t able to play contact sports growing up because I was born with birth defect called spina bifida that effected my spinal cord. Being able to go watch these guys practice and then be able to get autographs and mingle with the coaches and the players really helped me forget about my every day struggles and forget about anything bad I had going on. Players like Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, Issac Bruce and Tory Holt really played a big impact on my younger years. I remember in 2000 the Tennessee Titans came for a scrimmage and then four years later the Chicago Bears came down and held practices and a scrimmage. I never really got star struck until one day while the Bears were in town in 2004 I had the chance to meet Brian Urlacher and I couldn’t believe it. Meeting all these guys and making connections and still having friendships with one of the guys to this day it really helped me realize that the guys you watch on the television on the football field are just normal human beings and I can’t be anymore grateful for them taking the time out of their day to sign autographs and have conversations with me
That's so full circle. Seeing Derrick make that interception during playoff game, ending the game by sealing Lion's team win, was so wonderful. His child was at his dad's first game that day, too. How special. What you give comes back ten fold w how great ya feel afterwards. ❤❤💙🩶💙🩶💙🩶🏈 Go Lions, Go all teams!
Wow! What an amazing accomplishment! This honored reward couldn't have gone to a better person! Congrats big Whit, from a huge supporter and Bengals fan!
This man is the definition of a real one. He showcases what great side a humanity looks like and he Carries that anchor with pride. It’s been a privilege to watch him play football and to watch him be the person he is.
and He would still be Playing for The Bengals, if they didn't have such a Cheapskate Owner in Mike Brown, who didn't want to Pay the Man what He was Worth!,after this Sundays Super Bowl LVI , I'll bet Joe Burrow and Bengals Owner Mike Brown will have wished He was Still Lining Up with The Bengals Offensive Line!,and Protecting Burrows Blind Side!!!,Big Whit Should have been a Bengal for Life!!!!
His kids were listening and hearing what he says by his son's standing ovation. That's huge that we'll have at least 2 more people in the world like Andrew. It ALL starts in the home.
Well deserved. Whit is awesome. I still wish the bengals would’ve kept this guy for his entire career. May have been bengals biggest mistake in franchise history
His message is so strong that it made me cry, I don't have anything like him, I'm not rich, but with what I help and I can feel what he says by helping others..🙏🙏🙏👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏼
