      Personally got fired from a call center job about 2 weeks before I would have gotten my 6 months benefits and 50% employee discount. They say it was a customer complaint but personally I never stepped out of line with a customer and when it came to "muting" the customer so you can talk smack, we were all told first day to unplug your headset when "talking with your superior" because the mute doesn't always work. The place was shady anyway I'm glad I had an excuse to get out of there instead of just up and quitting.

    I worked in a call center but I was the IT administrator of that site so I did not interact with the customers. I was supporting the employees and doing other shit. Everyone that was answering phones looked miserable. Supervisors told them when they could take a break or meal out. They only got 30 min for lunch and got written up if they were few min late from clocking back in. I worked m-f only while they worked weekends as well. Call center jobs are no joke and does look soul crushing

    • @MatterinoTV
      @MatterinoTV 5 лет назад +36

      al821 I also worked IT at a call center. It was a telemarketing company ran by a family friend. They hired people who had trouble with the law to give them a chance to make money and rehabiliate themselves. It was a close call center and everybody was very friendly. People could chat in between calls and eat at their desks. They could also sit at whatever station they wanted which was cool. One of the best jobs I had. Most people there seemed to not mind it. The tech room was so much fun and the other technicians and I were good friends. I felt like I was part of a family there and I was sad to leave. Some places are better than others I guess.

      @@MatterinoTV how do I get into such a IT job? which qualifications do I need and would you recommend it?

    • @MatterinoTV
      @MatterinoTV 5 лет назад +9

      John Daker Well, for me, I can say I was lucky enough to have that family friend. I was 18 years old, had only worked a few months for a construction company, and the only technical background I had was the fact that I grew up with computers and had an interest in them. They were welcoming because they needed another technician who didnt mind making minimum wage fixing computers. Most IT jobs pay better, but require experience like a CS degree, Microsoft Certifications, or relevant experience in an IT field.
      I would recommend the type of job I had to anyone who doesn't mind mindless tech work such as setting up stations ( creating user accounts, hooking up peripherals, installing programs, etc.. ). IT at a call center is really easy, but can get boring for most people.
      If you want to try to get into an IT field with little to no experience I would recommend call centers for sure. Just have a working knowledge of computers and troubleshooting common issues with windows and mac systems and make your resume look slick and clean emphasizing your ability to work with computers.
      Like i said I got lucky so i dont know how this would work out for anyone else with no experience, however IT is a rapidly growing job market and little experience can take you a long way and it's not as hard to work your way up the ladder as people make it out to be. I went from having 2 years at that low end job to a contract job working IT for twice the pay just because of my experience.
      Reach out to an IT contractor or any regular job contractor and they can help you find a good job based on your experience :)

      @Angel Haaland I worked in an airline call center, and we'd have people screaming obscenities at us. If our shift was 5 hours or less, we had only a 15 min break. Also, we were not allowed to use our break on the last 15 minutes of our shift. People did that to avoid being "stuck on call". That was horrible...only one minute left on your shift and in comes the Call From H***. You had to stay on the phone and resolve the call however long it took. I was once stuck on call for 2 hours past my shift. NO special break, and no shift adjustment ("Since you spent 2 hours extra on your shift tonight, we'll let you leave 2 hours early tomorrow night") afterwards.

      I left that industry only after six months providing customer support for a US-based telecom carrier.
      With the products they shove down customer's throats, the way they sneak in hidden charges, the rampant "errors" in billing, the way they let the customers go in circles when filing complaints to the point where they give up, IT IS HARD TO DEFEND the company.

If it is a technical role try and get into faults or provisioning, or even Network Operations. That might create a buffer between customers and yourself. Speaking with internal staff might be easier than dealing with angry abusive customers back to back all the time. This all depends on your experience and how the business is setup.

    I worked in a call center for three years, and it drove me to have severe anxiety and panic attacks. I called in sick a lot, I showed up late, and one day I quit on the spot without giving any notice. I watched some of my coworkers be driven to tears by asshole callers, and the supervisors refused to let us hang up on abusive callers until their issue was handled. We also had to get approval before transferring calls to a supervisor, and the supervisors would often say no or be unavailable due to "meetings" they were in. They would also hover over our cubicles on occasion to see how we were doing, which made tense calls even more excruciating because our every move was being scrutinized. I hate that line of work with a passion. If the choice was between working in a call center or living on the streets, I'd choose the streets.

The more you reach your sales target the more they increase it for you. A minute late your fucking questioned. Now i have no idea wtf im going to do with my life, im very confused but i know for a fact ill never do call centre work again. This gives me flashbacks, I'm so glad I hung up my headset after 7 years service, though you gain the transferable skills; time keeping, working under pressure, working to targets, teamwork, etc. it still plays hell with one's mental health.
    I scored myself a job at a local college, and the students I deal with are less of a handful and have more common sense than some of the nutters on the other end of the line, better pay, better work/life balance too.
    On my last shift I did do exactly what Charlie and Gus did, made rude comments at customers, dropped calls on them, kept them on hold for ages whilst I went to make myself a coffee...I mean, what they going to do, fire me? 😂

    • @martinkuliza
      @martinkuliza 9 лет назад +9

      Depends how much patience you have, I"m an I.T. Engineer, i get this sort of thing as well,
      in the beginning you wonder how could be people be so stupid,
      After a while you realize a few things
      1. You shouldn't call them stupid, some people are just not computer literate, that's all.
      it doesn't make them stupid, it does make them computer illiterate though
      2. if you computer level on knowledge increases, it becomes harder and harder to see what the Lamens mean.
      you see as your knowledge increases, Your definition of what is Piss easy to do is generally way way above
      that of what a lamen considers piss easy
      Example, Opening command shell and running a Ping command is piss easy.
      a Lamen would sit there and go.. WTF did you just say
      on the other hand with the introduction of a SOURCE or INPUT button on remote controls as a result of Component, HDMI and other connections coming into effect, People no longer know how to turn on their TV's
      3. does this make them stupid,.... no, it doesn't ,it just means they are not up to date with the technology.
      4. After a while it just becomes a routine of
      Question : What's the problem your having
      Interpretation : Interpret the client problem into the actual problem they are having
      SOLUTION : Apply the solution, regardless of how basic the problem was and why the client caused it
      Move onto the next job
      i don't even bother judging anymore, i'ts just easier that way,
      on top of all the headaches you get
      Why are we techies trying to find the logic in lamen person does that looks absolutely stupid to us , but makes all the sense in the world to them, there's no logic to it, they make the logic up as they go along, so let's stop trying to figure it out.
      5. and lastly, their are actual stupid people out there, and when you get them, there's no benefit to calling them stupid.
      so as a general rule, i don't call anyone stupid, i just let the person justify what level they are on and i go from there.

    • @bizbite2
      @bizbite2 9 лет назад +1

      Martin Kuliza Well I never called them stupid, I realize it's their knowledge level... I realize I need to explain at their level, and I do.., :)

    • @martinkuliza
      @martinkuliza 9 лет назад

      bizbite2 that's great, i personally (in the beginning) used to go home thinking "how could people be that stupid", After a while i understood it for what it was.
      i think the funny thing is this
      (i won't say "the smarter you get" or "the dumber you get") I'll say it like this
      the more Tech Savvy you get
      the more it becomes psychologically stressful to have to deal with the most basic of basic of problems
      Just as the less Tech Savvy your are
      it's more stressful to deal with Tech issues
      i think the stress thing works on both sides of the spectrum , so to speak
      the only way to avoid the stress (Regardless of which side your on) is to learn to relax and have patience for the other side

      Or just for a shitty company, my call center job is clean with lots of breaks, PTO, pso, vacations, holidays off, lots of events and incentives, full benefits including health, vision dental and 401k, everyone is super friendly. Plus I get to put on my resume that I'm a paralegal. Our company really cares about the happiness of the workers, we have message chairs and ping pong tables in break room, free coffee, Christmas bonuses and monthly bonuses for meeting metrics. I've had a shitty dispatch job servicing ungrateful methadone patients where we didn't even get Christmas off, it's all about the company

      Will probably get better when CS becomes more AI focused in the future. Then reps can instead focus on solving the more complex problems by communicating with external and internal departments instead.
      But it will probably take another 5-10 years til that starts happening for real 😂😅

    I worked at a call centre for over 3 years. From entry level customer service rep to supervisors, I had experienced 'the call centre life'
    Mine was a call centre for a really big airlines. Now that I don't work in a call centre anymore, I regretted working in a call centre. I hated the odd night shifts. Literally, you will be treated like a robot. your performance will be audited everyday, week and months based on call quality, Attendance etc. You won't have much time for your family and friends + hardly not social life due to odd shift + demanding job. You will wish you worked somewhere else and not in a call centre and it's hard such as life is.
    I'm not making that many money anymore but I'm doing what I love now.

    lasted a month of training then when I hit the production floor, the next day I decided to quit.
    Now I feel a big relief. But i am still thankful cuz the important thing is I tried. but then realize it is not for me.

    I have worked at two different call centers in my life. The first call center I worked at was a company called LegalShield. Luckily, we mostly did outbound calls where we read a script to people explaining their 'benefits' of having a legal plan with us. I quit that job due to not enough hours. After that, I started working at a call center just down the road from LegalShield for a service partner for T-Mobile. I currently still work for this call center. I think people make call centers out to be so horrible, but I guess it just depends on you really. I had a friend who worked with me who quit from the sole purpose of the calls being too stressful for him. It's much easier working as a girl with a very feminine and cutesy voice. Customers tend to be more understanding to a five year old-sounding girl. I got lucky. My calls go through pretty smoothly. I have gotten mad at customers too, and place them on mute just to call them a horrible name. I have slipped a few times, and I got in major trouble from the first company. I wasn't fired because I was a little inaudible when I called the customer a bitch. The managers do record each and every call in case of review or mistreatment of the customer. If you're not good with empathizing with people you don't know or have a tendency to get angry easy, I would not suggest working as a call center representative. If you're like me; sound like a cute girl on the phone, don't really like confrontation with customers, easy to impress over the phone, and can keep a nice tone throughout the day; then you might try it out. Call centers don't really make you change your name, and there are understanding people who are customers and are willing to give feedback which can get you a bonus. Call centers pay well and do not require any manual labor. You just have to deal with the thought that you may get verbally abused if you don't resolve the issue. But one thing you will want to keep in mind is that you will never speak to this person again nor will you ever meet them. That's what I tell myself, and I worked my way up through 'the trenches' to good position, and I am paid well.

      What you were saying about having a feminine voice; I worked in an airline call center, and I'm a guy. I've had every type of call except two. Never had a bomb threat call (Thank God). The second type was a pervert call. The female reps in our briefings would talk about Panty Man, Diaper Man, Foot Man, etc. calling again. There are some men out there who have nothing else to do with their worthless lives than to call a female on a 1-800 line and talk dirty to her. It would always be a man doing that, never a woman. I never had such a call presumably because when these men hear a male voice answering, they hang up.

      America really sucks!! The system of EXTREME capitalism has left everyone in the USA feeling that wealth is more important and more valuable than people are. Corporations care more about money than they do about their employees!! In Australia, if you start abusing call centre staff, they can abuse you right back and they can hang up on you if they want.
      Hells, speaking about 'mistreating customers,' when I worked in an internet bar/ cafe in the Valley, we were encouraged to physically throw out any customers who were disruptive or in any way unwanted. If some drunk tosser stumbled in and started harassing girls, we'd toss him out on his arse. If someone got abusive towards any staff member, we'd toss him out on his arse. When some prick took to habitually stealing our weekend tip jar, I chased his arse through two city blocks, tackled him, knocked his arse out and reclaimed our tips!! I'm starting to drift away from the point here...
      The point is, the customer isn't always right and it's the duty of an employer to support their employee regardless of the situation. After it's been resolved (in favour of the employee) the employer's duty is to then investigate the incident and to see if the employee was justified (no action required) or if the employee was unjustified in their actions (they get fired). Either way, if the employer doesn't support you, regardless of the situation, they aren't worth working for!!

      You’re not joking when you say “it’s killing you”. I currently work in a call center and I feel like it’s literally killing me. My anxiety is through the roof from being tied down to a chair staring at a screen all day that I started to develop a minor stress twitch. Your brain starts acting weird when you repeat the same thing over and over and over every single day causing you to become dumb. With major repetition every single fucking day you start messing up and slurring simple words; even your name. You gain weight and during the summer the chairs smell. I can’t think straight and am depressed 8 hours a day (while at work). You’re surrounded by underachievers with no real life goals all day. Just knowing that Monday through Friday you’re going to sit in one spot all day and have no real work satisfaction can drive you crazy. Ever wonder why most call centers offer amazing health insurance? It’s because the job is so unhealthy that it literally takes years off your life.
