Actually THE CITY AND THE STARS was a rewrite of 1937's AGAINST THE FALL OF NIGHT.The sequel BEYOND THE FALL OF NIGHT was based on the earlier novel. I preferred the latter novel. It was more subtle with more depth and sophistication. I read tCanS in '61
