    High speed of run up is not necessarily an optimisation strategy for ball speed - it depends on the delivery technique. For example a higher approach speed can lead to a slower ball speed for a side on action.

    Lots of great analysis here, and information from the latest research, thank you. I know the current trend is a braced front leg, but my mind then always goes back to the (very) fast West Indian bowlers of the 80s and they did not brace the front leg, and they did not seem to experience a greater injury rate than other bowlers, so it would be good to have some analysis around that. You did touch on that a little at the end of the video, but then that made the video a bit weird because you stressed a braced front leg at the beginning of the video, and then at the end of the video you seemed to say it doesn't really matter, which leaves one a bit confused.
    I found the 'front foot heel landing' was interesting, thanks. But you didn't mention whether that was the same for the back foot - heel first or not? Any thoughts?

      Hi Peter,
      The optimal way to transfer run-up momentum is to have a braced leg - this doesn't necessarily mean straight. A straight leg however gives us a longer level to rotate the top half of the body about - so straight is optimal compare to a braced bent knee. Hence the research findings of fast ball speeds related to straighter front legs. Currently, we do not know the difference having a braced straight leg has verse a braced bent knee for instance - but since we see international players with bent front knees - it may have less importance on ball release speed compared to some of the other known factors e.g. run-up speed. We also must be aware that not all players may physically be able to keep their front knee straight during the bowling action due to range of motion constraints for example. So to clarify having a braced leg is important - straight is ideal but for those where it may not be possible a bent knee still allows high ball release speeds to be achieved.
      In terms of front knee angles and injury, we know collapsing increases vertical ground reaction forces - however some bone research looking at adaptation of bone mineral density and bowling technique has not found any link with ground reaction forces, and suggests the high muscles forces incurred during bowling likely cause stress fractures. Technique research also supports this, and suggests that controlling the pelvis is key - this cannot happen with a collapsing (flexing) front leg, but can with a braced knee (even with a slight bend). In addition, we also will never know how many had injuries which couldn't be detected with the technology available in that era!
      In terms of the back foot contact - there is little knowledge on this. I think a toe first approach is more likely under good conditions where heavy impacts are not incurred so I would look out for that as an indicator of what may be happening - but it is possible to do it both ways!

    Hi Paul, thank you very much for this video, very informative. In terms of back foot landing, in javelin throwing the idea is to land 'as softly as possible' which means landing on a bent leg with the aim of almost collapsing on it and flaring out the ankle on front foot contact. There seems to be a disparity here but obviously they are different movements so what makes one injurious and one desirable? Thanks.

      Great question - and one I don’t have a definitive answer for given I haven’t done too much javelin research.
      In cricket, I think it’s injurious due to the straight arm law and the accuracy required in cricket. Our brains find a way to use the extra degree of freedom between the pelvis and lumbar spine to correct any misalignments between the top and bottom half, and the target.
      In javelin, these are probably corrected within the elbow and shoulder rotation - I have pondered if the pelvis position may be linked to elbow injuries especially in baseball, but haven’t looked into it too much.

      I too found this video informative.
      To answer your question re javelin, I think the major and sometimes overlooked difference is the weight of the projectile (156 grams vs 800 grams). So the javelin is significantly heavier.
      Also bowling seems to be more optimal speed vs. javelin which is more maximal speed ( of release). Where javelin accuracy isn't important. Also from my limited knowledge of javelin there is several technical modes, each trying to maximize various biomechanical principles. For example the wrap technique used by the world record holder, or the Finnish throwers that throw themselves into the throw. And of course throwers such as ex world record holder, Steve Backley from GB who threw similar to that of fast bowlers.
      Also the soft landing ( you referred to) in the Javelin I think is more a kin to helping the foot rotate which aids the plant of the front foot in speed.
      I think another difference is the angle of attack in Javelin. Also a bowler is essentially bowling down whereas a javelin thrower is trying to use the energy from the track transfer through the body to project the javelin up and through, rather than into the pitch.
      Just my thoughts.

    Great video. I am a right arm fast bowler and bowl im box cricket i. e. artificial grass turf. I've had pain in my front (left) foot , thumb only which eventually got black or dark and half of it came out over a course of 3-4 months. When i bowl now on the artificial turf, it sometimes still causes stress. apart from fixing my action, do i need to change shoes so that they have some spikes or little resistance? my shoes are flat at the bottom. or should i use doctor tape for thumb? please suggest

    personally i get most stressed about the first foot i put on the floor. i'm worried about putting too much pressure on it, i keep bending it because of the fear of injury but i'm not sure... is the first foot that lands supposed to be straight? just to clear things up for me.

    This was a Phd in Bowling mechanics in a 15min youtube video for filthy casuals and curious lovers-of-the-game -->exactly what the internet was meant for!! Now I wonder why the kit manufacturers have not designed a fast bowler-specific hybrid plyometric spring/elastic underkit(you know to convert that potential energy into kinetic energy) - could see some really rapid deliveries then.
    [When you stretch an elastic, it stores potential energy. This potential energy is converted into kinetic energy when the elastic is released. The amount of kinetic energy that is produced is proportional to the amount of potential energy that was stored.
    In the context of throwing a projectile, the elastic is the muscle. When you cock your arm back to throw a ball, you are stretching the muscle. The more you stretch the muscle, the more potential energy it stores. When you release your arm, the muscle contracts and releases the stored energy. This energy is then transferred to the ball, causing it to accelerate.
    The kinetic energy of the ball is what determines how far it will travel. The faster the ball is moving, the more kinetic energy it has. So, by storing more potential energy in the muscle, you can throw the ball farther.] Font leg Braced - Trunk Flexion and Arm Catapult.

    I would teach a bowler who has difficult y in a run up bowl with no pitch run up and realise when you think you need to bowl it's more important than you will realise. Always bowl with a front on action with no lose of monument though the crease and work around how you want to bowl from there. Your spine has to be netural though the run up for balance I also remember now.

    What about a closed off action? Where a line from front to back foot points towards fine leg, and the bowler then has to work against a blocked off pelvis. An example of this is Jacque Kallis

      A person doing gym like what your saying, will be lucky to do the speed your at. I suggest you leave it at that and you ain't ever surpassing 160 km champ C'mon Jeff Thompson, Shoaib Akhtar, Brett Lee type speeds at their peak fired up and your wanting 10 kms more.
      If your really serious perhaps Lance Armstrong's set up and some high quality combo performance enhancing illegal drugs mate.😅

    What was the sex breakdown of study participants? I'm aware male vs female bodies have muscoskeletal differences, which may affect these recommendations, and people assigned female at birth also tend to be more prone to factures & injuries as they age

    Its easy to bowl fast if you know a simple trick. All the process of bowling, from the run up to the landing of front foot is to gather momentum of speed. That momentum is converted to pace through the rotation of the bowling arm.. After all this process if you can rotate your arm fast as you "want" then you get the proper pace.. but most of them are not able to rotate their arm fast as they want. Do you know the reason for it.. ask me at gzerocdhzerobddd ... Ind
