The parts about the extended arm and the bottom hand bring your “paintbrush” is very true. Playing against pace, my biggest weakness was short balls and at the time I had a very tight grip on the bottom hand, so I would have to predict the length. Naturally, I started experimenting with the grip and found that a lighter grip on the bottom hand was more effective
Elbow to fine leg while backlift and for spinners to move towards the ball after it drops from the peak was very helpful. I played long time with butcher and painting theory. But what worked for me was holding bat with both hands with equal pressure slight more that painting grip and applying strong grip of top hand for ground shots only while moving the bat towards the ball to make contact. So backlift with front or back foot movement also with soft grip but only while making the contact application of power. While lofted using both hands simulataneously , while hitting lofted shot above the player and in specific or more precise area than top hand pressure applied first and then next fraction bottom hand. Please make more videos on how batters think for ipl games to hit back to back lofted shots when small miss hit can get them out. More about mental and emotional drama of getting out to play those risky shots with ease
fantastic video and content. is the grip of bat the same if one plays with a tennis ball please ?? i have a friendly match to play tomorrow morning and your reply will help.
Talking about the length of the spinner from 7:50 to 7:55 in the video, you referred a spinner bowls a "good length ball, full ball, or a short ball" so how does that change in the case of medium pace or pace bowler? Please do not advise playing without protective gears as kids are seeing your video and there are chances of injury. It is my take that if I can go close to the ball where the ball cannot take the edges then why block it, that ball is the perfect ball to be hit for a four or six. I would rather hit the cobra on the chin and knock it down..lol...
There will be balls which you can reach with your top hand but can’t drive but defend and hence smothering is necessary. If you can reach it obviously you will drive it. The spinner’s three types was to make sure you don’t cloud your mind but keep it simple as people complicate things the moment they think spin. If someone is that stupid that they go and play without protection it is their call.
Excellent explanation of foundation of batting. Without right foundation or basics your batting will not be correct and improving. Iits6 like a house with strong foundation stays for long time.
Thanks for posting this video. Can you please make video for youngsters as my son is 12 and plays for a local club and district team in Wolverhampton, England.
You. Mean Picking the line of the ball through flight and adjust the movement either back foot or front foot is the right way of playing the spin balling ??
In front foot defence of fourth stump line ball played where should bat comes on when we lift the bat,bat comes to the fine leg or it comes to off stump
My bottom hand grip is very tight due to which my bat face closes and i can play only in long on and long off. But i wonder if i can get the same amount of power with this bottom hand V grip..
Yea thank for noticing this. You generally dont want more than 2 finger gap between your hands. A split (wide) grip tends to increase control but reduce bat speed. Also, may make bottom hand too powerful as well. Faf Du plesis and Kane Williamson play with split grip tho so one can make it work.
I am totally against the idea of swinging with a closed bat. It curtails the bat swing and you can’t u weight the bat. You should swing with high hands and a slightly open bat. Helps unweight the bat. And you should also lead with your head and shoulder and not feet/bat. Also the first thing we teach children after the grip should be the swinging of the bat. Bat swings are mostly wrong even in international cricket.
I personally feel Gary Palmer’s technique is much better and also this guy does not emphasize on trigger moment. In this video there is a kind of contradiction to what Gary Palmer says about open stance .
Most of the international batsmen play with their right hand as their butcher hand. Technically left hand should be but in practice, we see it rarely. Name a few cricketers who hold the bat with their left hand as the butcher's hand.
Forget about stance or setup ... just look at Steve Smith or Lance Klusener Batting ... very unorthodox but so effective & popular 🙂 all we care is score runs that can have an impact on game!
Why lazy game cricket made a religion? 1) It is our boys and girls from villages and rural areas who are sweating and keeping our flags flying at international level in tough games like hockey, football and Track and field with the bare minimum infrastructure , but are not recognised. Only we see them during the Olympics and after it's only cricket, cricket and cricket. 2) Why is cricket considered a religion in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc? Looking back these countries are nonexistent in other field games requiring speed, stamina and fitness like basketball, rugby, track and field, swimming, soccer etc. The Olympics have always been the arena for display of the country's system and greatness by the developed nations. Earlier it was the USA and the USSR vying for the top spot, now China has jumped in for the claim. Instead of improving and working on games other than cricket these countries are trying to spread the game of cricket in other parts of the planet. Cricket is a skill based game, with the requirement of a minimum level of fitness. Even Inzamam ul Haq and Rohit Sharma types with their level of fitness have done exceptionally well to become world champions scoring tons. If you can't bowl fast go for spin, running between the wickets in your own timing. In batting, the ball comes to you. Opponents never stretch you in Speed, stamina and fitness. It is never neck to neck fight in skill, speed, stamina, and fitness. 3)Whereas in games like Soccer, hockey, basketball, tennis, rugby, track and field it requires an enormous amount of speed, stamina, fitness and skill. The opponent stretches you in all these parameters. To beat Bolt you have to be like him in not only skill, but you have to be more in Speed, stamina and fitness, than him apart from skill. So is Maradona, Ronaldo, Phelps, Michael Jordan, Nadal, Djokovic etc. People from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc play cricket out of convenience. 4) IN INDIA WE KEEP GIVING EXCUSES OF SUPPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE, than why is the reason that even though soccer, basketball and other games are popular in Europe and US, but there also people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc settled for generations, choose to play cricket only. These countries have made this lazy game their religion and are zero in all the other games which require speed, stamina, and fitness. The British don't pride themselves in cricket, they are soccer giants. So are Australia, South Africa, New Zealand etc For these countries cricket is not a religion, it is just a game. They are world class in soccer, rugby, track and field, swimming etc. If we combine the cricket playing population of India , it is going to be even more than the population of Australia, England, South Africa etc combined, then also are not dominant. If you consider the population to measure popularity then obviously cricket will be more popular, as most populous countries like India are mad after cricket. Cannot produce heroes in games requiring speed, stamina and fitness, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc try to search heroes in lazy game of cricket. 5) You talk of Bolt, they will bring cricketers to compare, You talk of Pele they will talk of cricketer, you talk of Nadal and Federer they will talk of cricketer. You talk of Michael Jordan they will talk of cricketer. Cannot rise in tough games, Indians have become ambassadors of the lazy game of cricket, Cricket mad nation can never be a sporting nation. It's an attitude. 6) Japan and Korea want to compete with top developed nations and make their presence felt be it technology, economy and games. Today they are among top world class footballers alongside European giants. 7) India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka are vying amongst themselves in a lazy game cricket and totally zero iny games requiring speed,, stamina and fitness. 8)Media also offers what sells amongst its population. In India cricketers sell. How can people emulate, Milkha Singh, P T Usha, Sunil Chetri, Dhyan Chand, Neeraj Chopra, Maradona, Michael Jordan, Nadal Djokovic Michael Phelps etc . Physically it's very demanding and it's very very tough to compete at world level. Also sports means athleticism which we see in Great Milkha Singh, hockey giants, PT Usha, Neeraj Chopra, Leander Paes etc.Americans don't need this lazy game. 9) Indo-Americans need this game cricket because they are not able to compete in any other game than cricket, which is based on skill. Americans are a sporting nation who are world class in track and field, soccer, basketball, tennis, boxing, rugby etc They lead in medal tally in olympics. Rather India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka etc who are mad after this cricket should work hard to develop other games in which they are zero.

This is an awesome summary of the setup. I was never taught these basics of the setup growing up in Australia. Thanks Raj!
Excellent video, explains the basics very clearly. My 8 year old loved this and helped me to convince him that the right hand is a ‘guide’ 😀
Glad it helped!
Hey how's his growing up career going???

Is it good or it's better to have both hands together?
