    I look back at my great grandmothers, they had maybe 3 dresses and a couple of pairs of shoes. They lived in tiny houses, considered shacks today. They wore aprons, killed and cooked their own chickens, planted gardens, washed clothes in a huge pot outside, had outhouses. I could go on and on. I wonder what they’d think of my home now and my closet and how I live. I bet they’d think I was wasteful.

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  6 месяцев назад +2

      Oh boy... this is SO true. I wonder the same thing about my grandma. She raised her family during the Depression and often talked about how wasteful younger women are (and she died in 1976). She would be shocked by me. She'd still love me, but she would be shocked...

    I haven’t bought a holiday decoration in many years. We built a collection of items we love that began 43 years ago. The items we have have meaning and memories for us.
    Imo there is nothing attractive or interesting about RUclips homes filled with Hobby Lobby items.
    My holiday decor is probably childish too but it’s for us and we enjoy it.
    I’ve boycotted Temu hauls (cheap junk) and actually I won’t watch hauls in general.
    I think I’m probably your age. I am really enjoying using the items we’ve bought over the years. Sure, I still buy things we need and use. I’ve become more mindful though with my purchases.
    I’ve spent the last 2 years decluttering 100%. My home is organized and functional. I can honestly tell you what is in every closet and drawer in our house. It’s a great feeling.
    I’m also comfortable knowing that if we were to be gone tomorrow our only child will not be overwhelmed going through our belongings. I don’t want to burden her with a house packed to the gills with decades of stuff.
    I’m definitely not a minimalist either.

      Hi Janet. It does sound like we are about the same age. You're ahead of my on the decluttering, but I'm working on it. Slow and steady is getting me there. It sounds wonderful to be to the point you are. :-)

  • @annw1395

    I loved this video. I'm so sorry that man criticized your Christmas decorations! I think they're beautiful. I love traditional decorations that are brought out every year, and which have memories for the family members. He probably doesn't even have any kids. My grandkids love seeing their old favorites each year.
    When we bought our current house, it was twice the size of our old, tiny one. I over-bought, wanting to decorate it. I bought antique knick knacks, and ended up with clutter, which I'm still working on.
    Two things that helped me. One was when I read a decluttering book, and the author said not to buy something unless I knew exactly where I was going to put it and how I was going to use it. I realized that I was just buying with only a vague idea of where something "could" go, but I had too many items that "could" go.in that same space.
    Also, I've always been taught about stewardship of our money and belongings, and I needed to be better about that. I'm bad about over-buying food.
    Idk what your previous RUclips channel was called bc I just found you quite recently, but I am definitely more interested in downsizing and decluttering than in accumulating any more!
    Your videos are calming and relaxing.

      Hi Ann! It sounds like we have a lot in common. I can relate so much to what you’ve said. It’s great advice to not buy something unless you know exactly where you’re going to put it. The former name was Rozanne Paxman’s Home, which wasn’t bad, but I needed to really make it clear to myself and the viewers what I’m talking about now. It will hold me accountable. I’m enjoying life so much more now!

    I don't think anyones life is simple but cleaning out the excess and buying only what I truly need has given me breathing room. The mess going on in the outside world can't always be controlled but my living space can.

    FOMO on RUclips is a real thing. Nothing feels better to me than having an Amazon package on the way. Temu is also a trap for me. Starting this year, something needs to be in my cart 3 days and then I decide. My grandkids love my Christmas decorations and nothing new has come into my collection for years. Thank you for being so honest. It's so nice to know there's a place I can come on RUclips and hear common sense as an encouragement. (PS I'm 60 and need nothing)

    I was upset that our local "Christmas Tree Shop" had closed, but now that I am decluttering my home, i am so grateful it's no longer there. It was a place i shopped and found a lot of cute, fun cheap things that I truly didn't need but had to have. Not shopping is the best thing for decluttering!! lol

    I am happy you changed the focus of R video content. I just started to follow you. I think that you said in one video “ no more foolish errors “. I keep a posted note “NO MORE FOOLISH SPENDING”. It has helped me tremendously. Yes I ask God to forgive me , and I forgive myself. I too have a deeper appreciation for what God has given me. My values are changing. I have been giving more value to the necessities of life and realizing what is just not necessary nor beneficial thank you for your divine insights. 😊

    I have just come across your channel this week. I love it! Your thoughts in this video just resonated with me. First, your home is beautiful, and your Christmas décor with the memories and the way you have decorated is so much more meaningful to you and your family than anything that anyone could present on RUclips. Don’t let something that someone said change the way you decorate. If there aren’t traditions and memories behind it, then what is the point? When I saw your home, I thought classy, timeless, meaningful.
    I feel that I am in the same stage of life as you are. Going through a lot of the same similar things. We are stuck in this world of consumerism encouraging us to buy and decorate and need something more. It’s a constant struggle to stay focused on what is most important. Keep sharing your words of wisdom - we need to hear it!

      I'm so glad you're here, Cassie! I wish I knew what I learned through this before (less wasted money), but I'm glad I know it now. I'm looking forward to decorating this Christmas because my attitude is going to be so different (I think better.) I've already decided to get rid of one of those big trees. Simpler and meaningful is best. And you're right - it's a constant struggle to stay focused. Carry on, right?

  • @angelabrown1847

    I am so proud of you! I have been actively decreasing my stuff since covid. As someone in my sixties, I don't want to leave a lot of things for my children to deal with and chances are that at some point we will downsize in some respect. And as I get older I want to make my home simpler to keep clean. So personally, I don't watch hauls. But I love videos with organizing, cleaning, fixing things, cooking, and reasonable decorating. I love the homemade and the meaningful things. Who cares what that man said? It is what is important to you!
    Two thing that have helped me are having written financial goals and listing beside those goals wants. Also I am VERY careful what comes in my home. I think long and hard where something is going. And I get rid of the thing it is replacing (which should be used up).❤

    • @TowardsASimpleLife
      @TowardsASimpleLife  6 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks Angela! It feels so good to have made this shift. I love your list of things you like to watch because that's what I like to do. Good advice about making the goals. Now, if I could just figure out why it scares me to make goals? There is some emotional baggage there I need to sort through. I'm getting more careful about what I'm bringing in here too. I'm a work in progress.

      Thanks so much. I’m the same way about decluttering. Small sweeps are working best for me and I’ve learned that it’s common for me to keep revisiting an area. It’s less pressure. I’m excited to work on my garden this year. I bought lots of flower seeds last year and was too sick to plant them. See you!
