@@ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks I’ve always wondered about the birds myself. I’d look at the geese at work or at the apartment I used to live in as they’d fly in and land on the ice...don’t understand how they survive out in the winter and they don’t even look cold...and their feet and legs are just sticks...no insulation at all and they walk in the snow and hang out in the wintry wind like it’s nothing. And what do they do for food?
And then I’d often wonder why we’re so fragile to the elements compared to a lot of animals.
All good questikns and observations Tony.. From what I read : They store fat during the short days of winter to keep themselves warm during the long nights. During those freezing nights, they fluff their feathers to trap heat and slow their metabolism to conserve energy. Feathers are fantastic insulation. Feathers will trap tiny pockets of air next to the bird, allowing the bird to hold that warm air around itself, preventing cold air from touching its skin. The more air trapped, the warmer the bird..
Have you ever had a goose down coat??
@@ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks No but I’ve had plenty of winter coats and I’m not just going to hang out in it in the dead of winter all day and night non-stop and walk in the snow barefoot. :-) I’ve been outside in cold’ish weather for weeks and it just keeps getting colder and colder as you’re in it.
When i was a kid i had a paper route.. one year i got like $120 in Christmas tips. I used that money to but an Eddie Bauer Goose Down jacket that was rated to -20° F. I still remember how warm that thing kept me while walking house to house to deliver papers. For many years as an adult I worked outside year round. We would work up to -30° with the wind chill. As long as my hands, feet and head was warm I was set. Alwys had a nice Carhart set of overalls and a coat, good redwing l boots and layerd my clothing... I did best I could to dress appropriately...
