США
Добавлен 20 мар 2015
On this channel I want to share a journey that started in 2015 as I was investigating ways to live tiny. This quickly evolved into purchasing my 1st boat ever in the summer of 2018 at 57yrs young. It was a 1978 Catalina 30' Sloop Rig Sailboat called "Fat Cat".
You will see my journey evolve as I sell Fat Cat in 2019 to purchase Chop Sticks a 1982 Island Trader 38' Ketch Rig Sailboat. Join me as I learn how to solo sail Chop Sticks on Lake Huron, Learn to make DIY boat repairs, and embark on adventures. I want you to see that realizing your dreams of sailing adventure is possible. If I can do it, so can you!! 😊

Boat Checkup and Gulls Wintering in Michigan - Episode #17
No need to get it up to temp first? To circulate through the muffler?
Hello, Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! Yes, it’s best to run the motor for a bit to ensure it reaches operating temperature and the Thermostat opens up.. I didn’t show it in the video but I did run several containers of eco friendly Antifreeze through the motor prior to actually filming it, so I was confident the motor reached a safe operating temp. In addition to ensure that Antifreeze was in the engine block at about 6:50 into the video I filmed myself I opening a small drain that is tapped directly into the block and saw the antifreeze come out of it. That gave me peace of mind. If you plan to use a process similar to what I show in the video, I should think that filling the 5 gallon bucket twice to 3 times with water and circulating that through the engine prior to introducing the Antifreeze would be the best way to proceed. Of course, I am not a licensed marine diesel mechanic. Just a fellow sailor that happens to be mechanically inclined. Hope you find my long winded response to be helpful!!
Thanks for the heads up

Hello and Thanks for watching!!! She does not have such a mount currently but I am sure I could install one…. What grade of chain do you have?
Hello, Thanks for watching and for sending a question.. I bought the ACCO Grade 43 (G4) Domestic High Test 3/8” chain. Hope that helps..
Looking forward to your videos and boat updates! Our 79 41' Island Trader is on the hard, we haven't had her in the water ourselves yet as she's 'new' to us- and we're coming from an 86 34' Catalina- so similar roots! Great job!

Thanks. Mine had a special short hand fixed spanner for the nut that came along with her. Luckily so, because I have no space for a long arm. She also came with an adjustable like you showed, initially, but was not too usefull (but it was old and slacky). I didn't manage to loosen the lock nut, but it was fairly easy to tighten them as a whole, so now it's dripping less again. I probably have a prop rotating the oposite way of yours as I tightened mine the way you loosened yours. I did mine on the water so I stopped when it was dripping less. According to various google answers it should drip some drops per minute when ideling. Thanks for sharing as you answered several of my Q's :-)
@@finnerutavdet Hello, Thanks much for watching and leaving a comment!!! Nice that yours came with a wrench for the Packing Shaft Nut!! Yeah Old and slacky is of no use…. Well awesome that you were able to adjust it! Happy to know that the video answered some of your questions!!!
Monkey wrenches work well on shaft nuts.
Hello and Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!! Agreed!!! I didn’t even think to try one.. Those spammer wrenches I got from Menards seemed like they would be kinda versatile.
Great video! You were out of the water when replacing this, yes?
Hello and Thanks for leaving a comment!!! Yes, she was on the hard when I replaced the stuffing box packing. I had previously thought about trying to do it while she was in the water. I watched a few videos of people that did, but they had much easier access to their boat’s stuffing box. In the end I am happy that I waited til she was on the hard since it was my 1st time. Now that I know what to expect, I am very confident that I could do it while she was in the water if necessary. Hope that helps!!
It is doable in the water if you have easy-ish access because when you pull the old stuffing out, plenty of water will come in. So it's essential you have everything prepared (new stuffing already cut to length, bilge pump is on, etc.) and then it's not a problem. As long as it all goes well, otherwise it *is* a problem :D In general though this kind of thing is best done out of the water, for everyone's peace of mind :D
Agreed and well put!!!!
Good explanation of how it's done - also gotta love the boat yoga you have to do to get at it, I'm so happy I have a boat now that has easy access. It's priceless! Edited to add: next time when you do this, cut the new stuffing diagonally, when compressed it'll leak even less :)
@@gfimadcat Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! It was definitely some boat yoga!! Easy access is nice for sure!!! Thanks for the suggestion!! Will do!! 😎⛵️🥢🏴☠️🤙

40 years and over 200,000 miles later and I still dont know what an anchor swivel is for, except emptying your wallet. You dont need it, it makes your ground tackle more likely to fail. Nice shackle, though.

You must have a big ass boat and anchor locker to hold 300’ of that size chain
Hello 👋 thanks so much for watching the video and for leaving a comment!! I have a 1982 Island Trader 38’ Ketch Rig… She displaces about 26,400 lbs.. I did some research & 300 feet seemed to be the magic number. I went with 3/8 instead of 5/16 for the increased the weight which would help more when at anchor.. a bit after I had bought the chain, I started to think about the extra weight and if it might push my bow down.. i’m pretty confident my chain locker will handle it, but just in case it doesn’t &/or it pushes the bow down too much I can always trim some of the chain off.
I came across this video researching replacing my anchor and chain.. Funny fact, that sexy beast next to you is my boat (Harmony). I thought something familiar with this thumb nail. Bay Harbor was a good place to do boat work but those cottonwood seeds are something else. Cheers!
Hello 👋 Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! Wow that’s too kool!!! Love the name of your boat!! Is she still at Bay Harbor Marina?? It is a good place to do boat work and I have met alot of good people there too!! I haven’t been around when the Cottonwood seeds were a problem but I know what u mean… Yikes!! If you get a chance with Episode #26 Old Wooden Schooner in the Boneyard.. that boat Coaster II is at Bay Harbor Marina and it had an interesting history!!.. Hope you have a terrific day!!
@@ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks She is over on the west side of Michigan now. I am taking her to FL. had her @ Chicago but ran into some issues. (Mississippi historic low water level, lock closure etc.) So I came back to MI. for winter. Just going to have her moved on a trailer. They are picking her up end of the month. The cotton wood seeds were in full effect when I was doing the epoxy & bottom paint work on the leeward side of the building. Billions of them floating in the air and falling out around the boats. I think I know the boat your talking about but I'll check it out. I'm friends with the people that have the sister ship to yours there in bay city and they told me about it.
@Scottsyearbook sounds like you have a good plan… Yikes!!! Trying to do some epoxy work with an about a million of those things floating in the air would be quite a challenge!!! a few weeks ago I went with a friend to visit a family member of theirs.. the family member owns a 1998 Hunter 376 and they keep it at the Garrison Bight Mooring field off Key West.. they said $400/ month.. just an fyi for you.. so you know Sean & Nita.. they a good people!!! How much antifreeze did you need for the motor?
Hello! I bought a few gallons… there will be some waste unless you are able to capture what comes out the exhaust . Beautiful boat. I have my eye on an Island Trader 38 right now. What's your experience with her in winds from 10 to 12 knots? I know there's concern about light air performance, but, I'm looking for insight into someone who actually sails one. Thanks.
Hello 👋 Thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment!!! Please take a moment to subscribe if you haven’t already done so… I hear they don’t point well into the wind and yes light air performance is not good! I am still basically a newbie and I I haven’t really sailed her that much.. on a solo trip from Bay City to East Tawas I motor sailed here there and back in about 10 knot winds.. She certainly wasn’t built for speed. But she is still honestly Bad Ass!!! 😎!!! There is a Facebook group called “Friends of the Island Trader 37 & Magellan 36”. There are fellow sailors in the group with substantially more experience under their belt than me..
One more question. My wooden main mast was water damaged, so I scrapped it. what are the cross-sectional dimensions of your aluminum main mast?
Great question!!! Sorry I do not know the cross sectional dimensions… I do have a good resource for you though… If you are on Facebook there is a group called “Friends of the Island Trader 37 and Magellan 36”… I would most definitely recommend joining the group!! I have seen several posts related to replacing masts on our boats.. It has been a terrific resource for me…
@@ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks Can I ask a favor for you to measure it. It should be something like 7 1/2" X 5 1/2" or perhaps 8" X 6". Just use a ruler. thank you.
I would be happy too!! I will be out at the boat in a few days and I will take a measurement…
OK. perhaps I could install a stuffing box seal. Do you know what make/model you have? And is the shaft 1 1/4" diameter?
The stuffing box “packing” for my setup is flax infused square packing cord… I loosen a jam nut that’s holds a compression sleeve in place.. the compression sleeve is what creates some pressure on the packing cord iwhich in turn creates a seal on the prop shaft… There are three main components to my setup which is considered a traditional stuffing box: the stuffing box body, the compression sleeve, and a jam nut that locks the compression sleeve in place. You may be better keeping the drip less seal setup u have… I think to replace the dripless seal you may have to slide the prop shaft out a bit… Have you watched any videos on replacing a dripless seal or convert from dripless back to the traditional setup??? I can check the diameter of my prop shaft and let you know
My dripless seal on the shaft of my Island Trader 37/38 is leaking. Does anyone know the make/model of the original one so I can purchase an exact fit?
Thanks much for watching and the question. Unfortunately I don’t have a dripless stuffing box seal…. Mine uses the packing cord which I believe is 1/4 inch….
Just bought an abandoned 1977 island trader 41 for peanuts can't wait to restore it. Beautiful boat!
Congrats and Right On!!!!! I just subscribed to your channel.. hope you will do a boat tour of her!! Definitely a beautiful boat!!! 😎⛵️🥢🏴☠️🤙
Beautiful boat. How well they sail? Thanks
Hello, Happy Saturday!! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to send a question!! I am still very new to sailing so it’s hard for me to give you good review. I have seen this written about them.. Island Traders are known for their seaworthy nature, strength and comfort. This heavy displacement Bluewater sailing vessel was built for crossing oceans. Since she is a Ketch Rig she is easier to Solo Sail. Overall, I know she will be slow and not point into the wind very well…. But she was not built for speed.. she is built for comfort especially in somewhat heavy Seas 🌊 … overall she is definitely a Beautiful Boat. In episode #3 I Do a boat tour video…. I hope that helps.. Thanks again and please subscribe if you have not already.. Take care..

Hello, thanks much for watching and for leaving a comment. Please take a moment and subscribe if are interested 🙂. If it’s what I am pretty sure you are referring to, It’s the starting shaft sprocket and chain.. I have never tried but I should be able to put a handle on the T shaped thing coming off the top sprocket and use a crank handle to manually start the motor.. hope that helps explain.. I just snapped a pic from a 2QM20 from my Chiltons manual. The pic i have shows a Staring shaft on the 2QM20.. I tried to attach it to this response but no option to do so..I can add it to my instagram account if it helps?!

I would love to see how she looks more close up, above and below deck!! Hopefully, that will happen sometime early next season…. If you have a chance check out the video on the Tug Boat!! That thing is bad ass!! Especially since it was built in 1891!! 😳
@@ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks yeah cool looking forward to seeing the vid on the schooner. I’ll check out the tug too.
Awesome!!Thanks!! A descendant of the original owner saw the video.. and left a few comments!! said he was gonna try to buy the tug so he could get it back in the family…
That’s a beautiful schooner! The “ladder” in the stays are called ratlines, pronounced ratlins. I might be interested in that boat, are you still up there, or have you started your trip?
Thanks much for watching and thanks for leaving a comment!!!! Thanks for the information!!! I had no clue what they were called…. Very kool!!! Haven’t started my trip yet. The current plan is for sometime around or past August 2023… I am pretty sure Coaster ll is still there in the same spot.. I don’t believe the owner launched her last season!! I go to the marina to check on Chop Sticks frequently over the winter. Next time I am up there I will drive back in the boneyard to take a look and see if Coaster ll is still there… 🤙
What’s the only “rope” on a boat?…. The “bell rope” everything else is a “line”. Thought you might like that trivia.
Lol!!!! Right On!! 😎🥢⛵️🏴☠️🤙
So cowboys snort rope?
Lol!!! Ya got me there!! 😳😬😎
Very cool bro!! ⛵️🥢🏴☠️🤙😎
Hey Bro, Happy Friday 😎🥢⛵️🏴☠️🤙Hope all is well!! As always, Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!!! It’s much appreciated!!!
Love your boat! I agree, great design and wonderful details. I have had a ton of spider crack issues with gelcoat on various boats and I have some videos on my channel on how to route them out and fill them in. However, I am finding with surfaces like yours with just tons and tons of cracks, it will take forever to route them out and fill them in with fairing compound and sand...Big ones, yes that works fine. but so may of them just aren't practical to fill in. So I have tried now to use an epoxy barrier coat that fills them in and you can paint over them. I used TotalBoat's TotalProtect (the gray kit) and it really really worked well. A couple coats and it filled in these and very much self-levels. but a little light sanding if needed and it made a great surface for painting. Painting alone won't do it. It just doesnt fill them in well and you still can see them.
Hello, Thanks so much for watching and for the suggestion!!! I will certainly check into it!! 😎🥢⛵️🏴☠️🤙
I will check out your channel as well!!!
Unfortunately I’m new to sailing and got my first boat last month
Congrats and That’s Terrific!!! I remember my 1st sailboat purchased in July 2018. Hopefully you will find some of my videos helpful!! If you have any questions please feel free to let me know!!! Wishing you Fair Winds and Following Seas… 😎🥢⛵️🏴☠️🤙
@@ketchingmy2ndwindsvchopsticks I have, Chopsticks is a beautiful vessel and I hope to see you out on the bay this next season
Are you at Pier 7?
Hello, Thanks for watching!!! I am on the Hard right now.
I had a set of West Marine foul-weather pants and jacket. The jacket failed and leaked water during a particularly cold regatta. I went on line and wrote about on the West Marine site. I wasn't rude... just expressing concern. A few days later West Marine contacted me and replaced the jacket! I see that as good customer service.
Hello, Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!! Great story and Happy to hear they took care of you!! I have had good experiences with West Marine so far!! The staff is always friendly and helpful!!
Dave - Did you get her out this season yet?
Hello and no I did not.. Too many home renovation projects going in and I also wanted to work on some boat projects.. Hopefully I will be able to fit them in before I shrink wrap her this season…
Sorry to hear that. This is Darrin Harris from CF/TDAF. If you could use an extra set of hands on any of the boat projects, including winterizing, let me know. I’m gone the second half of Oct (sailing with a friend from Alabama to Key West), but other than that, I’ll be around.
Super cool old boat. Looks complete, just needs someone to rebuild.
Hello, Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!! She has quite an interesting history!! I hope to do a full boat tour video when the owner pulls off the Shrink Wrap!! Watch Episode #31 if u have a chance.. it’s just a quick update video showing the owner had her shrink wrapped over the winter.. Please feel free join the adventure, subscribe and hit the notifications bell 🔔 so u will be notified when I post new videos.. Have an amazing rest of the day!!
We want more! Greetings from the Netherlands 👍🏻
