    Hi Matt, I have the 1.8 S and won't be needing the 1.4 at the moment, but wanted to say that your videos are so exceptional in their content, thoroughness and quality. This one's no exception. I just wanted to stop by to say thank you for all you do to guide, educate and entertain us! 😃

      I have the 35mm f1.8 S, which is great and would not get a non S lens. When worrying about the extra cost it is worth remembering that lenses outlast the bodies. Cheers

      A 28 and 105 f/1.4 would be great! Perhaps it remains to be seen if Nikon plans on making f/1.2 versions of those focal lengths. If they do, then it makes sense that they might follow up with expanding the affordable f/1.4 line.

      Indeed, I still use my F-mount 28 f1.4 and 105 f1.4 on an FTZ and occasionally on a DSLR that I've kept. They both give a special look, not perfect but kind of special aesthetically.

    I now own this lens, and very happy Nikon decided to go this way for their 1.4 primes, finally allowing people with scarce budget to be able to have 1.4 lenses. I can say this lens has very decent sharpness @1.4, plenty for portraits. Yes there are CAs and it is to be expected , but @F1.8 or @F2 they are gone and the lens has great sharpness. For 4k video this lens is ideal.

  • @musiqueetmontagne
    @musiqueetmontagne 2 месяца назад +1

    Thanks for another great video Matt. I think these are a great addition to the Z line up. Yes, as you say, one can add "character" in post but I use a few of my F-mount lenses still to render differently. Sometimes I want an in-camera slight softness for the center of a portrait but with great colour rendition and a good and strong fall-off of sharpness to the corners as with the 58mm f1.4G lens. I also use the Z lenses, the f1.8's are fantastic for clean rendition as in product shots, architecture etc and my 50mm f1.2 is both sharp wide-open without being crazy sharp, and renders wonderful files overall. So each is a tool to an end and I continue to use both systems for certain jobs and whichever gives me the image I want with the least post processing.

    Amazing value! Had 50mm f1.8 S for years, remarkably sharp corner to corner lens. It will be interesting to see when DXO measures this f1.4 gem, my f1.8 was Zeiss Otus territory @44. +2.3 stop for same size? Wow. A tough choice, both similar price keeping mine but if I didn't already own it not exactly sure the outcome because I'm sure the f1.4 will test close. Great stuff!

    This would be a great kit lens too. I mean to have 1.4 for as a first lens is better than many of zooms. Zfc with this lens and some first portraits would look good! My first Nikon lens was 18-55mm and that wasn't spectacular experience from start.

    Great move by Nikon to create this new affordable line of lenses. Quite smart to make it a middle 1.4, in between the 1.2 and 1.8 which then makes the entry lense very attractive. I have lots of 1.8s, very happy with them, not selling. But I must say the new 1.4s are really tempting.

      Try to keep both if you can. I'm a fast glass junkie, mostly for portraits but other shots too and have the 1.8, an amazing little lens, for general use and the 1.2 for many things but especially environmental portraits, it's exceptional but so big and heavy. This 1.4 looks like a lovely low light, fast lens for a more portable kit.

      I just had a thought ..., we now see Sony, for example, making version II's of their e-mount mirrorless lenses (we are almost 11 years into the first 35mm full frame E-mount lenses), what if we fast-forward 4 years, and there is new versions of the 1.8 S lenses, which are even better than todays. Showing the differential more clearly ...

    It’s great that Nikon is putting out these 1.4 lenses. Naturally we can’t expect them to perform as good as the S-Line or have as many features. But Nikon has to be careful not to give up too much performance or features compared to third party options. There are several other manufacturers putting out some amazingly good lenses at very low prices so the Nikon glass has to perform better wide open otherwise there may not be much point in buying these f/1.4’s. They seem quite good overall but I wish Nikon had gotten the color fringing better controlled.

    • @SlashORC
      @SlashORC 2 месяца назад

      I think the pricing for these "budget" options could've been better, third party options still cost less than half the price of these and probably performs on par.

    I recently tried this 50mm F1.4 lens from a friend who is a Nikon user for over 30 years like me, because I was interested in analyzing the bokeh, which is very good, it is less silky than the 1.2 but better than the 1.8. Yes, the only thing that fails a little is in the sharpness in the corners, but it is not that bad either. I will keep my 1.8 S because it gives me the results I want. The lens for the price is fantastic! Thanks

    As someone who bought (finally) into the Z mount exactly 2 weeks ago after shooting Nikon F for 15 years, this is comical, ...having bought the 50mm 1.8 ten days ago :D
    But, I don't think i'm going to "upgrade". Shot Sigma ART 1.4 line on my DSLRs and really, for my purposes, i really don't care much about the 1.4 anymore. Performance and IQ on the 1.8 are really one-of-a-kind in my opinion and sure, the bokeh on the 1.4 looks nice (as a 1.4 does), but i think after all theese years, i'm finally "over it" :D

      @jpdj2715 2 месяца назад +4

      When people need to determine the artistic quality of their images based on the quality of unsharpness, something must be terribly missing in their artistic department. And even if they are in the wedding craft, what do they say to a bride complaining that they didn't make her look like a supermodel? "But look ma'm, do you see how beautiful the bokeh is?"
      Nerdy 1.
      The entry pupil area of 50mm/1.8 is 60% of 50mm/1.4 and that's less than 1 EV.
      In the SLR days that was important for still having a view through the finder when it got dark, and your ability to manually focus.
      Today we have an eVF and our cameras can still focus at EV -9 or -10 - while we cannot take a normal picture any longer.
      But the 60% are only meaningful if we enter the T-value of both lenses into the comparison.
      Nerdy 2.
      The 50mm/1.8S has a T value of 1.9 (on Z 7, say DxO Mark FWIW) - very good IMO. This also applies to the 85mm/1.8S and 35mm/1.S.
      In F-mount, Nikon's 58mm/1.4G has a T value of 1.7 - rather bad IMO. And their 50mm/1.4G does well with a T value of 1.5.
      The only lens in DxO Mark with T value at 100% is Nikon's Z 24mm-70mm/4S with a T value of 4.
      Nerdy 3.
      The f-number on a lens indicating its "speed" is only valid at infinity distance/focusing setting. In principle. When we focus closer by, the f becomes bigger and this means that the aperture number must get bigger as well. My 105/2.8S macro lens becomes 160mm at 1:1 reproduction ratio closest distance and what was 105/2.8 now becomes 160/4.3. And I repeat, the f-number is meaningless without T value or calibration: Nikon's Noct Z 58mm/0.95 has a T value of 1.1 (its light transmission being 75% of what was suggested by the f/0.95 - at infinity focus setting).
      Nerdy 4.
      The "focus breathing under Nerdy 3 may be annoying in movie making but what I call "aperture breathing" is more annoying. Prime lenses that suppress focus breathing are in fact subtle zoom lenses that zoom out when you focus closer by and retain focal length that way, so the f-number does not change. In theory - if the T value remains constant. This is why cine primes have more elements and are more expensive. With Nikon's extremely good coatings the high number of elements is not a problem at all - except for people who cannot add aperture trails, glare or flare in post. Other brands make a director of photography anally retentive and cling to their matte boxes (lens shades), whilst being afraid of any form of backlight.
      Note that zoom lenses still have the focus/aperture breathing problem, if not addressed in the design and the same applies to lenses with internal focusing.
      Which means that an abstract discussion about 1.4 lenses is total [male bovine excrement].
      A lens being 1.4 does not mean it has a great design and it does not mean it performs well. It also does not mean it has great bokeh, or that it distorts geometrically as a way to get round bokeh balls under every angle.
      If you have a 1.8 lens design that performs really well, and next increase the diameter of the elements as a simple way to get 1.4 then what you add is significantly more chromatic aberration in the first place. There is no free lunch here, or anywhere.
      Nikon comes up with this 1.4 because of naive fluencers creating demand, not because "photography" needs it.

    Many thanks for your Video.
    But another lens I don't know, why anyone would buy it! - I would prefer the better Quality of the 50/1.8S over the small difference of f-Stop.
    For a good image quality - I guess - you have to stop the 50/1.4 down to 1.8 ?
    Is this lens more for portrait, where sharpness is less important (at least in the corners)?

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  2 месяца назад

      It's for all the uses plus more your saw in this video. It is cheaper, it collects more light, and allows for shorter depth of field. Those pros have to be weighed against the differences found in the 1.8 S. From there it is a choice.

    It's so interesting how mirrorless has changed my perspective on these types of lenses. Previously in DSLR world, I pretty much refused to de a l with F1.4 lenses. AF was less reliable than their cheaper F1.8 counterparts, and they were rarely sharp (I did have a very sharp Sigma F1.4, but AF was sketchy). I preferred AF reliability to the extra light gathering. So, recently I purchased a 50mm F1 8 S and am very happy. I might prefer it overall for less flaring and chromatic aberration, but it's mow much closer because these new F1.4 lenses are plenty sharp wide open and the AF seems adequate as well. The fact that they cost less than the F1.8 S versions is a nice cherry on top. Not saying I would purchase this instead of the S version, but it's far more tempting . Mirrorless and, I suspect, the larger Z mount have made a big difference in these decisions.

    It's great that nikon chose to make affordable 1.4 lenses, not only it will help them against lenses like sigma's that are usualy the go to 1.4 because of their price but it looks like that nikon want to do like panasonic with some lenses that are almost identical in size/weight for video but doing it at F1.4 instead of 1.8 for about 50/100€ more per lense and even if they aren't the sharpest lense ever they are still pretty great and for video you don't really need extreme sharpness anyway ( except maybe for wildlife ) and it seems that 50mm F1.4 also have very few focus breathing, nice again for video work, as if havong multiples affordable F1.4 lenses that have the same size wasn't good enough for that, all gimbal users would love it :)
    Even on DX camera it seems to be a pretty good alternative to the sigma 56mm F1.4 for only 40€ costier, sure it's bigger but i would like to see how the two compare to each other :)

    how is this is less the 50mm F/1.8

    I said once nikon started to make lenses for the mirrorless that they would be limited glass and because they wanted to make as much money as possible with LIMITED glass available that nikon would not release cheap lenses until they had flooded the market with expensive glass? If your only choice is expensive glass then that's all you can buy, not nikon achieved this goal and sold loads of expensive glass now is the time to flood the market with cheaper glass to all them that just couldn't stretch to paying for expensive glass, the problem is all them that went out and had no choice but to buy S glass and it's extortionate prices now wouldn't buy this say new 50mm, so nikon worked their magic in getting people to spend vast money on S glass that given the choice may have just saved their money and bought this 1.4 ... However for me.... Well I'm still shooting on my sigma art 1.4 and see no benefit to buying this new 1.4 or for that matter an 50mm S lens, so I do wonder what the real life of this lens actually shoots like vs all the other 50mm mirrorless glass and even compared to my art glass, is there really that much difference to shell out all this cash again?
    Love the show Matt but I think nikon is too late with this lens, anyone who hadn't already shelled out sh*t loads of cash on the premium 50mm and couldn't justify the price, actually went out and bought the sigma art, like I said I don't see anything in this video that says sell my sigma for this new 1.4

    Hi Matt - glad you are recovering from Covid - hope you feel 100% soon. Looks like Nikon is going to make that 1.4 line of affordable lenses that we all speculated about years ago - and this is a great decision - they keep making it harder and harder not to buy every lens they make! 😂. I wonder if they will release in the same order than they did for the 1.8's - if so an 85 1.4 would be next if I remember correctly.
    Lets catch up soon!
    -PD

      @@scotthayesproductions5715 Pricing is a tricky thing. What was the 1.8 worth a week ago, what is it worth now? It is currently $526 new on B+H. And it is $488 on KEH USED. www.keh.com/shop/nikon-nikkor-z-50mm-f-1-8-s-lens-62.html My guess is 2nd hand pricing is more impacted by Nikon sales of new lenses than anything else. A private 2nd hand price might $399-$450 (relative to condition of lens) The 1.8 S is worth that much. And I don't think the arrival of the 1.4 will impact that much. There will perhaps be an initial rush of 1.8 S coming on to the market, but after that I think 2nd hand prices will stabilise to what the lens is worth. I don't think the 1.4 will 'kill' the release value. Like with everything when buying and selling, timing is important. I would not be selling a 1.8 S now, due to the current sale price of the a new 1.8 S

    I cannot agree with the car choices in your analogy. Nikon lenses are the BMW of the camera world. They are imbued with solid engineering through and through. A lot is expected of the brand and the range of models seems to continue to increase covering every marketing niche and use case available. The prices are well and truly justified by the value they offer.

    What?! Z mount lenses optically better than F mount? I think a lot of people have different experiences... The same with Canon RF better than EF... With all of this trickery called 'in-camera corrections" manufacturers try to squeeze higher profit margins on very often INFERIOR lenses compared to what they used to produce in the past for DSLRs... If we could mount reversely some of these new mirrorless "wonderglass" on DSLRs, it would turn out that a lot of RAWS look like 💩- hideous distortions etc. Selling pressure of the new toys is a thing though...

      @@mozzman *plus there are 3rd party F-mount/EF equivalents (e.g. Sigma, Tamron, Samyang) which often render more beautiful images than body manufacturers' ones. My experiences with number of mirrorless glass is great resolving and sterile... you end up with images that look alike in a blind test - when color matched it doesn't matter if you shoot with Nikon, Canon, Sony glass because they all look almost the same. I just don't enjoy this direction of photography. What's next? Perfect AI-like looking images? That's also the reason why I enjoy vintage lenses. Fortunately they can be mounted on Z, even with AF in many cases 👍🏻 When you take a photo, you just know immediately it was shot with X,Y... even no exit data is necessary to know. It's a subjective matter, some prefer sterile resolving, some value genuine, unique character more, so you do you and I'll do me 📷👍🏻 Happy shooting ✌🏻
