SAxe is my go-to weapon, My favorite combo to use is starting in axe mode do a forward roll followed by an X attack, This will to an upward strike. After the strike you can combo into your flurry by mashing A. Once stamina is depleted hit R to do the wide sweep axe finisher and R again to combo into Sword Mode. Follow this with the Xx3 Combo and at the end do your X plus A thrust. Mash X until climax. This whole combo takes about 7 seconds to finish so best used while the monster is stunned, paralyzed, trapped, or downed.
Someone mentioned this below, but X+A jump attack with the sword drawn will perform a mini Finisher, and a jump attack with your weapon sheathed using X+A will result in a sword attack
Forgot to mention that if you combo into the Phial Burst/Discharge (X+A sword mode special) from the third move of the sword mode combo (double slash), the thrust is a lot quicker.
SWORD MODE: X (Overhead Slash) from idle or holding direction for forward step L -> X Horizontal Slash L -> R convert to axe side chop L -> X Double Slice | L -> X Overhead Slash (X->X->X loop) | L -> A Horizontal Slash | L -> X Double Slice ( A->X or X->X->X loop) | L -> R convert to axe side chop L -> A Upward Slash* L -> X Overhead Slash (X->A loop) L -> A Horizontal Slash L -> X Double Slice ( A->X or X->X->X loop) L -> R convert to axe side chop A from idle (or held while walking) is always the Horizontal Slash and can be combo'd from appropriately. * Rolling -> X results in the Upward Slash and can be combo'd from just as if you had done an A upward slash from a normal combo. The Double Slash gives you the best sword damage output. On trapped, toppled, and KO'd monsters open with A to X and repeat or Rolling X to A to X then repeat A->X. This combo will make you step forward quite a bit, so X->A is better for smaller targets you may accidentally step past or be pushed away from. X->A or Rolling->X->X->A repeat X->A you stand in place and have a much more precise hit line. This is good so you're not hitting wings or other more armored parts by mistake. Deviljho's belly is a good example when he is toppled. X->A (vertical combo) will hit the mark, but A->X (horizontal slash to double slash) will hit legs and Jaw for almost half the damage of striking the belly!
As always, you did a good job describing a weapon. But I would like to add something. An important part of Sword Mode is the fact that it gets a natural Mind's Eye (attacks don't bounce off from the harder part of the enemies, even on lower sharpness). This helps especially in early-mid game, when sharpness of the weapons is kinda low and you probadly won't get this skill any other way. After Double Slash in Sword Mode, you can preform a quick version of Elemental Discharge (without the 'pull back' animation). Helpful in keeping your DPS high. Also, Hack 'n' Slash/Flurry attack actually gives you a highest DPS. If you see a monster fall down, quickly getting into this attack can easily rack up damage, and then transit to Sword Mode after the finish.
Thank you very much! I'm soon getting 4U so I decided to waste time with portable 3rd, I was not sure if the SA had a phial burst but thanks to you, I know how to do it!
+KaiserChiefs There is, of course, the skill you get from Seregios, which allows you to sharpen your weapon while evading. Unless that's what you meant in the first place. Haha
Great video! Never knew about the X and A spamming in sword form, it'll really help in cutting tails for me. Just thought I'd mention this, but there's another combo into your blast finisher if you want, it's just the standard three X combo in sword form and after the second slice from the third x tap, simply use X+A for a super quick thrust into your finisher! That's what I've been using most since I don't like the somewhat long startup for it without the triple x combo.
Yuichi Thank you for stating that combo, it is so awesome! Switch Axe is my favourite weapon since MH3U. I was wondering for a very long time what could be used to combo in the blast for a long time.
in axe mode when doing forward + X you can press A for a side slash and from there go directly into another forward + X, Really nice to deal some extra dmg when the monster is running off. Also you can only go back into axe mode from sword mode when you do a side slash so either X>X>R or A>R.
There's also another stationary infinite sword combo that more closely represents what the infinite sword combo was in MH3U, all you need to do is hit X twice before alternating or hit A twice before alternating. So it would go X>X>A>X>A>X>A>X>A etc. This alternates between downward slashes on the A press and side swipes on the X press. It's pretty useful for being able to do the stationary combo while also leaving yourself in a good position to do the mid-combo transition back to Axe form if you're running low on phial or want to enter a flurry of blows.
I think it's worth noting you can draw into a sword jump attack while sheathed by holding r and pressing x+a during the jump, useful for mounting monsters with hard backs/heads due to minds eye. Also beginning the combo with idle a in sword mode will start you off at the sideward swipe, allowing you to chain a,x,a,x getting a double strike on every x attack, useful for applying status and dealing big damage.
I love these videos. Just as I think I know everything about a weapon, you tell me something I didn't know. I played all of MH3U with a Switch Axe and didn't know about the flurry finisher or flurry finish to sword morph!
***** awesome i've just subscribed, very informative and entertaining....i am looking forward when the full game comes out ;) Will you do a walkthrough btw?
+Arekkz Gaming Do you know what switch axe is this? I got white fatalis switch axe for lightning element, but i always wondered what switch axe is this.
You should have mentioned that the elemental discharge in Sword Mode not only drains your switch gauge, but also your weapon's sharpness. When you stab the monster with your sword and keep pressing X, each time you press X apparently counts as a slash. I would say 50-75% of the time, I need to use a whetstone after using the elemental discharge.
I understand this is extremely old, but I am just watching this for the first time even though I know everything, anyway, you can use the sword X+A burst attack while in mid air, he will stab forward and the burst will start when u hit the ground. Also, exhaust phials when used on a monsters head I believes stuns.
Been maining the switch axe since forever, did NOT know about the finisher after the hack-and-slash. Very good to know. :o Seriously, though, poison axes are the best. You'll pretty much always hit the monster enough to poison it, so that's free damage in every fight. :D
Harvey Kent it depends on your playstyle really. I mostly prefer element because it gives more advantage but this would require getting a s.axe for every elemental weakness monster can have. i dont really mind collecting them, since Swagaxe is swag af.
Wynne Bernadette Sorry, I got it wrong. It's kinda confusing, how element phials are not exactly the same with para/poison and how power phial s.axe can have element dmg. Check on wiki for it monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Switch_Axe Power is my most preferred weapon (apparently my axes are under power lol), element/status can be versatile.
+Harvey Kent i have an exhaust SA for online so i don't leech the low rank people and if i need help for myself i pick my strongest SA wich has power phial... they are both very good but it does, as said, depend on your playstyle... massive damaga or do you want to inflict a status on it... or do you want it to get tired so (if online) there can be whaled on the monster?
kiranico.com/en/mh4u/wiki/weapons Scroll down to Switch-Axe and compare what each attack does. The numbers are a percentage of the weapon's power applied to the attack. So the hack'n'slash (mash X after an axe mode upswing) does 24% each hit. The Sword X->A repeat combo is 30% and 25%, averaging 27% per hit. Hack'n'slash with the axe mode attacks faster, so you would assume it does more damage, but that's rarely the case. Most monsters won't stand still long enough to take advantage of it. The wide hits also make it hard to hit critical areas of monsters. If the head is the weakest spot, the sword X->A stands still with a tight sweep range making it easy for head shots, while axe mode may hit to wide and strike heavy armored areas like wings or legs (this all varies from monster to monster! Kiranico is a great source to know which spot to aim for.) The sword will also do more damage from the phial. Power phials are usually best because elemental and status damage is calculated separately each hit with status effects usually only being applied 1 every 3 hits. Fast weapons are ideal for elemental weapons, so sword and shield and dual blades excel at it. The Hack'n'slash on the axe is actually very good for high elemental damage weapons. But again, you need the monster to actually sit still long enough for it to add up. X->A->Dodge or just X->Dodge is sword mode is your primary attack 3 out of 4 times in most situations until you get a better opening to phial burst (X+A) or do the more powerful but laggier double hit with sword (X->X->X->repeat or A->X->repeat with A being the horizontal sweeper style slash... just press A to start the combo basically)
Charge blade or switch axe?? I always played around with the Great Sword in MHFU and the longsword for when I wanted some more mobility. What would you suggest?
I'd recommend the Switch Axe. I'm a noob who just started MH4U and wanted to main mostly in Hunting Horn, Charge Blade, and Gun Lance. Did well with the horn due to how easy to combos for buffs were, but the Charge Blade felt a bit to complicated and the Gun Lance was just to slow and clunky. Then I went on to the Great Sword. Wasn't bad, but I love axes as fantasy weapons and wanted to try one. Also wanted some more maneuverability. Chose the Switch Axe and it feels like more of a mobile-friendly Great Sword. Allows you to dodge with weapon drawn a little faster, as well as the actual attacks themselves feel less slow so you can react easier to monster attacks and such. Sure you lose a charge attack and a block, but I never cared for them.
I know this is waaaaay too late but I'll say it for reference, just in case someone else has a question like yours. To do an early discharge, you have to press x and hold your circle pad back at the same time. It might not do it right away. Usually I just hold my circle pad back and just spam x until it discharges.
+NoahFan114 It depends on what phial that SA has. Power gives a 20% bonus to physical damage, Element Phial gives a 25% boost to elemental damage or status damage, and Dragon adds extra Dragon damage (not sure how much). Exhaust phial adds KO damage. Poison, Para, etc, those add a status to the blade. Sorry, I'm not sure on the percentages that the Dragon, Exhaust, etc add. But in short, only Power, Element, and Dragon add actual damage, whereas the others add status damage.
Jonathan Casanas Have you played MH3 or a later game? Stamina is a mechanic that was introduced in MH3, and used in every game since then. When a monster is low on stamina, it usually begins drooling, and stands around to catch its breath, giving you a beautiful opening for attacks on any part you want to hit. Charges become clumsier (the Raths trip at the end of their charges, for example) and special moves fail to actually fire (the Raths will move their heads and make a noise as if they were launching a fireball, but nothing actually comes out). The way a monster recovers from it is either eating or going into Rage, both of which fully restore stamina. Exhaust attacks are good to speed up the process, as are (or so I heard) attacks to the head and letting the monster overuse their big moves.
What the hell happend to the switch axe? I'm not very far yet, but for some reason, the best switchaxe I can craft does 100 points more damage than the best Hammer I can make. I call bullshit.

Same
same , i played a lot of 3u because of it lol
April 2021 and I do, too. LoL. need to refresh the swagaxe combo in 4u.
Ay, 2024 and am doing the same thing, replaying this goated game while everyone is playing world 🤑
@@spukhxft world is missing the charm of the older games. MH4U, 3U and freedom unite are all still classics.
SWORD MODE:

4:35 Pull back to do an early finisher... tee hee.
I see what you did there.
I'm thinking of maining this weapon it is very convenient since it does seem slow but you are still able to move around quite a bit and it hits hard
Just barely starting mh4u and just thank you for making it much easier to learn the combos. My friends and I appreciate it alot.
I searched specifically for your guides. They are easy to understand and professionally done. Thanks.
Hey late 2020. Watching again some good and nice mh content !!!

shinigamiPeter is that RandomBoobGuy?...
I've always been a switchaxe user, but I never realized how well this thing can chain together. This is gonna make things sooooo much easier :D
Thanks man, this really helped me jump right into my Rath switch axe.
Thank you very much! I'm soon getting 4U so I decided to waste time with portable 3rd, I was not sure if the SA had a phial burst but thanks to you, I know how to do it!
Just tried the SA out for the 1st time tonight & HOLY Crap! Do they wear out fast!
+NoahFan114 dash juices and negate stamina from hunting horn helps
also if you eat for felyne black belt staminal will go down slower than normal too
+Krastorbrohoof not stamina, sharpness. The switch axe wears out fast.
+NoahFan114 try dual blades if you think switch axe wears out fast :P

i find few things in this game more enjoyable than getting the killing blow with the sword blast.
I did that yesterday! :D
It was a Capture quest. D:
I'm here because my brother and I decided to play this game again and I couldn't figure out how one of my favorite weapons worked 😄

just started using the switch axe, and damn this video was helpful
A note that most people don't mention, the kick prompt activates the upward swing on the axe when it's been drawn.

It's weeb trash and for some reason I love it

I havent played 3ultimate so am curious what changes they have made to my favourite weapon ;)
Long Sword is next! :) It'll be up on Wednesday.
***** awesome i've just subscribed, very informative and entertaining....i am looking forward when the full game comes out ;)

if you go up a ledge with you weapon equiped and press X you do the attack while pressing R in the stamina reducing combo
Great video! The only thing I'm failing at is switching fluidly between the sword and axe during combos.
You can TELL he loves da Charge Blade to this!
Is a dream come true!~
This was my main in MH3U. Trying to remember if there's anything new with it. Well, I'll find out on Tuesday when it gets here
You forgot to mention that the sword finisher drains a large chunk of sharpness if it is completed with the final blast.
shame the exhaust switch axes are lacking

Hey i love watching your videos...how about the LBG or the HBG :-D
The flurry sword attack doesn't work
Is that flurry attack in axe mode stronger than using any other move in sword mode? and is sword mode better for cutting tails?

Yeah I agree the switch axe does a ton of damage and has 2 modes so yeah switch axe, hope I helped and have a great day
weapons in monster hunter are so cool
I don't think I caught what the button was to reload manually. How did you do that? 'When you jumped off the ledge to reload your weapon'.
You press R to reload in the air - just like if you're reloading on the ground, only in the air :)
Thank you. :) Great videos btw. Good job. :D
***** i use x+a+a as my sword combo, is it good?
actually i use X+X+X+X now, it's a very good and fast combo and with my 550 poison switchaxe i poison them in 3 seconds
You also forgot to point that the sword mode have the awakening ability
How do I perform an early Elemental Discharge?
I know this is waaaaay too late but I'll say it for reference, just in case someone else has a question like yours.
To do an early discharge, you have to press x and hold your circle pad back at the same time. It might not do it right away. Usually I just hold my circle pad back and just spam x until it discharges.
What Switch Axe is that? It looks awesome :D
I think it is the General's Arm or Conquest Axe.
You should do any of the scythes
Please and thank you :D
How much more powerful is Sword mode?
what armor is that looks awesome
+Disastrousmaster The Damascus Armor
+blkmattymatt oh thanks
Anyone know what armor set this is??
You didn't cover the Y button combo for sword... That is the one I use all the time.
jdemondo18974 Y combo?
jdemondo18974 Wtf is the Y combo?
Solid StrangeDew
X. He didint cover the X combo. you keep pressing x and you hit once, twice then two fast consecutive hits. it never ends.
Back in tri: R+X+A then X-A-X-A-X-A-+++++++ quite powerful
+Levobertus I prefer the RXXXXXXXXXXX combo myself It has more vertical reach to get rid of those pesky tails.
+Nep Nep but the second X hit does slightly less damage I think and also makes a step back instead of forward
Levobertus In TriG, They were both powerful vertical swings.
+Nep Nep never used it in 3u.
But hell I miss my longsword >:(
Levobertus I hear our beloved LS is back to badass in X
What Armor is this in the Demo i want to farm it
Did you find what it was?
How much more damaging is sword mode?
+NoahFan114 It depends on what phial that SA has. Power gives a 20% bonus to physical damage, Element Phial gives a 25% boost to elemental damage or status damage, and Dragon adds extra Dragon damage (not sure how much). Exhaust phial adds KO damage. Poison, Para, etc, those add a status to the blade.
Sorry, I'm not sure on the percentages that the Dragon, Exhaust, etc add.
But in short, only Power, Element, and Dragon add actual damage, whereas the others add status damage.
the name of the outro pls?
What armor is that??
WHERE/HOW DO I GET ELEMENT PHIALS!?!?!
