Hey, really nice tutorial. It's also very clear, so it'll help lots of people. However, as other people said, it's quite inaccurate. There basically 3 errors in this tutorial, and 2 of these errors have been rapidly noticed by the community, but only few people noticed the last: 1 - You're not dealing Lv3 Charged. In order to have a Lv3 Charged, you have to release X just when you see that sort of red aura around you "explodes". If done correctly, you should hear a metallic sound, like the one you can hear while doing a Lv3 Super Charged or a Lv3 Super Swipe. 2 - You can go for a Slap (and then a Super Charge) even after dealing a Uncharged/Charged Vertical Slash, just pressing X again. This is quite important, because allows you to perform an extremely powerful combo on a captured/KO monster: *Lv3 Charged - Slap - Lv3 Super Charged - Lv3 Super Swipe.* It deals devastating damage, but it takes a very long time, so you usually use it only on enemies who can't move. 3 - You didn't talk about the extremely important Roll-End attacks: basically, after a roll, you can quickly perorm an attack. This allows you to restart a combo that you didn't want to interrupt, or allows you to reach powerful moves in fewer seconds. * 3a - After a Straight Roll (the normal Roll you perform with Sheated or Unsheated sword), if you have your sword Unsheated, you can rapidly perform a Slap pressing X. this is an extremely important move, because it allows you to go for a Super Charged veeeeery quickly. Also, even is slap doesn't really inflict tons of damage, you can drain some extra HPs while the monster is going to die and is changing area: you can just follow him, repeatedly rolling toward him and slapping his leg or tail (*Roll - Slap - Roll - Slap...*). * 3b - After a Side Roll (the Roll you perform when you have just used an attack, if you move the Stick Rightwards/Leftwards/Downwards while pressing B), pressing X you can rapidly perform a Swipe pressing X (pay attention: usually, Swipe's button is A, but you need to press X after the Side Roll in order to quickly use it). Even if this is maybe not important as the Quick Slap, it allows you to restart an interrupted combo ( *[Everything that does not finish with Super Swipe] - Side Roll - Quick Swipe - [Everything you want]* ), and it also brings you to a Super Charged. With this message, tutorial should be complete. Nice work anyway, i still haven't found (even written!) a complete tutorial for MH4U GreatSword.
Pasta DellaNonna The video itself didn't teach me I didn't already know, minus the lv 3 charge thing even I was cringing at that...but this taught me so much!
The "level 3" charges you are demonstrating are only level 2. When you first start glowing yellow, you are UNcharged and will do the same amount of damage as a regular 'x', just with a delay. Every time you flash red, it's one level of charge. You only waited for 2 red flashes, thus you only used level 2 charges. It might also behoove you to talk about the attacks you can do at the end of a roll, especially using 'x' after a forward roll, as it can extend the distance you travel by a small amount. It also gives the greatsword a small amount of close combat ability that it previously lacked.
Charged Slash Charged Slashes will increase in power the longer you charge your attack, but wait too long and it'll become weaker. When you see a large flash of light, release the button for maximum damage.
The jump slash is extremely powerful. A good tip for any greatsworder, is to make use of every ledge in the area. The jump slash is more powerful than your level one draw swing. So in areas that are loaded with ledges, you can deal serious damage extremely fast. There have been numerous occasions where I was able to stop a charging gravios in its tracks with just a single jump slash. Just keep in mind that it's risky as it leaves you open if you mess up. And getting hit mid air can happen if you use it carelessly.
The great sword was the first weapon I mastered after leaving the comfort zone of the basic sword and shield. It's been my main weapon ever since, yet I still learned new things from this.
yeah you're wrong about the charge in this game. That blue glow at the end is when you need to let go to do your final charge >.< but i guess you've heard this before judging from the comments. I'm a great sword user myself and made the same mistake when playing this game the first time.
Did you know that you can do the super charge after doing the slap attack, after a regular/charged X attack? So if you charge X, press X again to slap, and the back and X again to do the super charge. My point is that you dont have to press A at all in the combo :D Just wanted to share because you didnt mention that combo in the video :)
You're right, man. It's quite an important thing because you need to do that in order to do the most powerful GreatSword combo (usually done on trapped/KO enemies): Level 3 Charge - Slap - Level 3 Super Charge - Level 3 Super Swipe Nice and very noob-friendly tutorial, but not extremely accurate.
I prefer to use the GS on huge, immobile targets such as Dah'ren Mohran or Dala. For smaller monsters, it's just a bit too sluggish for my liking, although waiting for the opportunity to strike is very nice (and it looks awesome... lets me feel like Guts from Berserk).
+Sand Katze It doesnt feel slow or sluggish at all to me to be honest, if you get into the habit of hitting and instantly putting away your weapon again after roll you are arguably more mobile than with LS or similiar things. As well, it even is very effective if you rarely get your charged hits off, leaving them exclusively for the times the monster is idle oder immobilized completely (traps, fallen, stunned etc.) , wich furthermore increases your mobility.
Karl Münster Yeah, I've gotten a bit more used to its rhythm by now. I prefer using the GS online, though, for solo runs with a heavy weapon I usually go with a Swaxe.
Karl Münster That's how I feel about Lance and Gunlance. I only recently got into them and I'm terrible at Evade Lancing, but they're still fun... The Gunlance works better for me though. I'm probably good at blowing up stuff.
Charged Slash Charged Slashes will increase in power the longer you charge your attack, but wait too long and it'll become weaker. When you see a large flash of light, release the button for maximum damage.
btw, I did get knocked up in the air by the x+a by a team mate in online, but I could link that as if I did a jump attack from a ledge. (I was using sword and shield then.)
I find it helpful to roll forward and press x to do a slap and then a special charge, also this can be used similar to a dash move to get closer to a monster and if you hit a monster on the head with the slap you can build up for a K.O. which is helpful if hunting with a hammer or some charge blades. Also you can role sideways and press x to do a spin attack a lot faster than pressing the normally button to do a spin attack.
also forgot to mention that you can use the knockup to help allies avoid a hit or to set them up for a jumping attack (though don't try this if you aren't really good with GS)
Hi, What is the best end game armor/great sword and skills with decoration stated for great sword. Need help. I am new to monster hunter. Hope you can tell me the names of the items and decoration that i needed.
Daryl Chew i realize this is a month old but if your still looking for a great endgame GS armor set my favorite consists of a Skull Visage and Tetsucabra X greaves for Torso Up followed by a Kaiser X mail and Vambraces and to finish up with Kushala X Cocoon with the Proper gems and a Fast charge talisman I have Critical Draw , Sheath control, Sharpness +1 and Focus
one more move that was put in this game is that after a forward roll then you can preform a sword slap far quicker than normal, plus being able to combo from that, so if a monster is knocked down and you have your sword out, then roll, attack and super charge as i like to call it.
I really like how you keep your videos short but informative i didnt even know about that new charge slash^^ Ill look forward to your other tutorials and may even consider to try out a new weapontype now I rarely sub youtubers but you really earned it :D
haha same but after i saw my friends using hit and run on a jinouga i also tried that and yeah i didn't know much but my friend told i can adapt easily to any games we even fought but he forgot the hit and run most of the time
I only thought of it cause of how impossibly slow you are while it's out. chasing jaggis gets old after a while if you don't learn to sheath your g. sword lol I am still kinda new at this game tho. it's really addicting lol
I really want to get good with the GS but it is so hard for me. I’m new to MH and I hit G-rank a little while ago. I am really good with the insect glaive and charge blade but it seems from all the youtube that ive watched that the GS is the quintessential MH weapon going back to the very first MH. I am really interested in experiencing that, but the mobility that I’ve become used to with the IG and the overall simplicity of the CB are making it hard for me to adapt to the GS.
I dont get it the 4th charge is the level 3 right and the 3rd charge is level 2? am i wrong can someone verify if im correct or not got confuse because of this tutorial
Overhead (the X+A buttonhit) hit can be quite good too, its a teamwork effort too. Friend helps you launch onto the monster and you can grab on the monster's back. But I'm sure everyone knows that already.
and another thing... you cant overcharge the stronger charge but you can save time when you hold the button just long enaugth instead of holding it down for as long as possible.
Hey ***** this video was great! Ive been playing monster hunter for a very long time, 6 years now i think. Ive always wanted to learn the great sword, but not many of my friends main it. I was just looking through some weapon tutorials from your channel and stumbled across this video, and it was amazing, very informative and vert useful. Now thanks to you i can finally properly use every single weapon in the game :D (I know its sad lol)
aah. greatsword.. ive been using that ever sinds my first monster hunter game (freedom unite for PsP.. yeah I know I know.. ima late person) and up to now I am still the greatsword of chaos, its my best, my fav (altho the chargeblade comes in close) and the bane of all my allies... XD
although the X+A move with this weapon can be utilized to launch your friends so they can mount.... although i do not recommend this if you're playing over the internet as communication can be difficult.
Kinda hilarious and annoying that he left this guide up that completely gets the main GS move wrong. Obviously it's been said a hundred times but dude is only doing the level 2 charge...

GS might be one of my top 3 favorite weapons in the game. I'm only at 9 star Caravan and 3 star Guild (by myself!) so I haven't experimented with some stuff like the Bow, LBG, HBG, Lance, Gunlance, etc, but GS, CB, and LS might be my 3 absolute favorites. Vulcamagnon with quick sharpening and health boost have been getting me through like 5-6 Zinogres in the 8 star Caravan Hunt-a-thon.
i actually didnt know you could kick with the great sword. i just side swipe the deal with annoying little minions most of the time. or just avoid them. you can also super swipe after a normal charge. and
shadowsa2b Yeah, it also is super funny when this last second kick kills the monster when you're with friends. Not a great damage dealer, but it is quick and easier to roll out of than the super swipe if you have a time crunch on a telegraphed attack.
I'm still a new player and I never really considered the great sword as a viable weapon because of the very slow movement speed and swing speed. Though I did give it a shot after watching this and followed your advice to the letter. The damage is absolutely intoxicating. I think I have a new favored weapon along side my switch axe and dual blades. I annihilated a kecha wacha much faster with the great sword than I did with the dual blades. He didn't like that one bit.
Robert Williams It is a very good weapon when used effectively. I thought the same thing about the speed when I was first starting out back in the first Freedom game(good times). Then I thought they wouldn't put it in unless they balanced that slow speed with crazy power. I was correct. Great sword 4 life.
Piccolo Junior Freedom Unite was the first monster hunter I ever played. I was a completely different gamer back then and it never really grew on me. I probably had maybe 10 hours played total, strictly with the dual blades.
Robert Williams I probably sunk a good 300 into the first Freedom before getting the second one, which was probably another couple hundred. Then Unite came along and I know I had at least 500 when my psp broke last year. Not very many games can hold my attention like Monster Hunter.
Piccolo Junior Same here. I've almost 300 hours into MH4U since about 3 weeks after launch. Not many games hold my attention either. Games like this, Terraria, Binding of Isaac and Rebirth are really the ony ones I play anymore. AAA games don't do it for me these days.
Robert Williams The last AAA game I really got into and still play is Skyrim. I'm not proud of the amount of time I've spent on that game. Oh, and GTA 5. Gotta have some of that madness.
I don't know what part of the tree that particular one is since the first 3 forges look exactly the same. possibly the last 2 as well. But it's the GS from the Swordscale Shard path. You need to break the back of the Dalamadur to get the dalamadur fanblade in the guild 7 quests: Advanced: Speartip Menace or Advanced: Here to Eternity. It is a 78% drop rate so it's pretty easy to make available. Unfortunately as you can tell it's a pretty late quest so you won't have access to it anytime soon if you just got the game. It is bad ass though and I'm gunning for it as well once I finish my main weapons.
lol yea it obviously is an axe but it looks bad ass. mh has always had weapons that clearly don't fit the classification of the group it's in. call it a quirk of the series.
One time I played with the worst player ever and I was charging my GS and he came behind me and spammed his gunlance shells and me went flyin' he wasnt even good with the GL. :(
Hey, really nice tutorial. It's also very clear, so it'll help lots of people.

Could you possibly post #3 on its own? I can't seem to read it from my iPhone.
+Pasta DellaNonna I also wouldn't worry about blocking.
A loss of sharpness is a good trade off for loss of health.
also Whetstones exist.
+the bonesauce it just says "you didn't talk"
+Chaud314231 As well the fact that you can block roars and flashes with it now is sooo good, allows you to be so much more aggressive with GS

Man sounds exactly the same 7 years later love ya Arekkz😂
the block on the GS is a real lifesaver
Oh sorry but THAT is NOT a level 3 charge... it has to flash blue and it will do a special ping
A common mistake I see in some GS tutorials unfortunately lol
Naja er hat es dann später richtig gemacht
well he did it right, later in the video
Lorenz Studer No, he only did right the level 3 super charge... Doing it right is easier, because it can't be overcharged.
This was made in the demo.
You should have mentioned that you can use kicks to wake up your allies when they're paralyzed or asleep.
The jump slash is extremely powerful. A good tip for any greatsworder, is to make use of every ledge in the area. The jump slash is more powerful than your level one draw swing. I'm pretty sure you were doing the level 2 charge when you said it was level three. I still got the gist of it, but... just so you know.

been using great sword since the 2nd G, try the others new weapon but still goes back to GS!

DO LONG SWORD NEXT!!!
Kinda hilarious and annoying that he left this guide up that completely gets the main GS move wrong. Obviously it's been said a hundred times but dude is only doing the level 2 charge...
Is it me or can you pull FORWARDS and press X for the super swipe charge too? Seems to do same thing for me, backwards or forwards.
You can pull back in any direction on the circle pad in order to do the super charge.
an you team mates use aerial attacks after you send them flying with xa?
What armor set and GS is that?
iam a bit late but that's the dalamadur GS and armor set.
Makez 190 Thank you! Not late at all! Still didn't even get to G Rank yet lmao
Have fun raising that HR :)
Well overcharging would explain why I seem to not get that much damage. I thought that big red flash was the third charge level, not overcharge.
How do the charge levels affect your damage? I mean obviously they increase your damage, but by how much? I have to imagine it's fairly significant.
can you do the bow next time

Do heavy bow gun
What sword is that? I like the look of it.
Sadly this video taught me how to charge the level 3 wrong. I've been doing a level 2 charge the entire game without knowing
How much damage does great sword 3 charge do
Hahha I miss play mh
One of the best games I played and I'm glad that I got far in mhfu and mh3u

Anyone know the name of the sword in this video?
I don't know what part of the tree that particular one is since the first 3 forges look exactly the same. possibly the last 2 as well. But it's the GS from the Swordscale Shard path. You need to break the back of the Dalamadur to get the dalamadur fanblade in the guild 7 quests: Advanced: Speartip Menace or Advanced: Here to Eternity. It is a 78% drop rate so it's pretty easy to make available. Unfortunately as you can tell it's a pretty late quest so you won't have access to it anytime soon if you just got the game. It is bad ass though and I'm gunning for it as well once I finish my main weapons.
it's dalamadur Great sword Swordscale shard
Is there a bow?
i dont hit and run i just go for it,and suprisingly i dont faint in 5 seconds...XD
O.O OMG I WANT THAT GAME!!! what system? (ps3 please)
For a weapon tutorial, this video is missing a ton of information. You even mistook a level 2 charge for a level 3 one. This is quite cringeworthy.
There is also charge 4
Clearly this is and ax but its called a sword. I'm beginning to think monster hunter just doesn't give a shit anymore.
lol yea it obviously is an axe but it looks bad ass. mh has always had weapons that clearly don't fit the classification of the group it's in. call it a quirk of the series.
Its the weapon he has during the demo. In fact for dual blades, i was able to craft dual battleaxes but still act the same weapon mechanics.
TheVargess It's more of a style than just a physical description. How you use it determines the category.
One time I played with the worst player ever and I was charging my GS and he came behind me and spammed his gunlance shells and me went flyin' he wasnt even good with the GL. :(
ummm... why are you playing the demo?
Did you like... not see when the video was made?
super swipper super swipper no super swiping?
I really dont like playing as g.sword becuase its extremely repetetive. basicly all you do is repeat normal slash and charge.
Try playing against faster monsters like Magalas or Zinogre and you will see there is more to it.
Do bow
One of the oldest weapons in Monster Hunter series.
Lol lvl 3 charge
I stopped using it ,it's slow
yep, but its fun as hell to kill a monster in 7 hits.
Dude.. You don't know what you're talking about...
