7 yrs later and this video is still very relevant. I know you got bashed mercilessly by some idiots because you were trying to explain doing it in Windows with ASIO4ALL via USB. Well look what I found in my closet, A brand new Focusrite 816 3rd Gen (Still in the box from 3 yrs ago). Guess what, It doesn't have ADAT or Word Clock. Just SPIDF ! Looking at aggregating with a PreSonus 1824C or Zoom L-8. So those who said hook this $hit up W/Adat to Adat or Word Clock. Nope, no can do. Had to do it this way SPDIF. Thanks Bro !
Thank you very much for the tip! I want to record drums with 10 channels. I have behringer umc 1820 with 8 channels(it has both SPDIF and ADAT) and portative zoom u-44(it has SPDIF only). Both of them record quite good to me for process in DAW, but when i try to expand master 1820 with slave u-44 via spdif - signal from u-44 comes with awful digital jitter when i kick bass drum or play toms. Seems like it do not like low freq. Also spdif mix two microphones into stereo( not two standalone mono signals, each mic separately) which is not good for mix. So, did i get it right - your method in simple words is to use both interfaces via usb separately and use spdif just to synchronize them?
Feeding SPDIF from U-44 should work just fine. Make sure you have the correct sample and bit rate for SPDIF and U-44 is set with external clock via SPDIF.
Great video and information! My question is I have 2 identical m audio fast track ultra 8r. Can they be used together to gain 16 channels with asio4all? Thank u
@@RecordingStudio9 thank u for the fast reply! The 2nd one hasn't arrived yet so I'm not able to check anything out yet. Would asio4all work as the main driver for both then or do both units need their respective drivers? Just confused on if the original driver for the 1st one doesn't recognize the 2nd new one I'm assuming I cant install the same driver twice.....
I know some manufacturers' drivers, like some Behringer drivers, support multiple of the same units, though still as separate units, not sure of M-Audio. Like you can connect 2 or more Firepower FCA1616 audio interface using same driver install etc.
On the 1818VSL, to record 18 tracks simultaneously can the spdif be used with a simple a/d converter or does it need to be an audio interface in order for the sync to work with the adat and the spdif? My adat device is a fostex fd8 from 1999, so there's no way that I'm aware of to have that use a different clock. The manual just talks about a midi sync with a midi cable
Excellent video👍👍Hey where can I find the Audiobox 1818vsl software for my Presonus Audiobox 1818vsl interface? I didn't see it on the Presonus website..
Very informative video. Both my interfaces are M-Audio Ultra 8R's. How can I use both along with ASIO4ALL, I cannot install 2 instances of the M-Audio drivers.
It's unfortunate but I cannot use the 2 identical interfaces. ASIO4ALL shows both interaces but only 1 is active, 2nd one is idle, I believe it is beacuse I cannot install two identical drivers. I wonder if anyone else with identical interfaces has the same issue.
excellent very well explained, the only video that has understood the problem of synchronization, the only bad thing is that it is not applicable to cheaper interfaces like scarlet or the behringer umc 202, because the drivers of these do not have the option of syncronization or I'm wrong
Excellent videos, I just subbed! I have a few questions, would be great if you could advise: 1) My current interfaces scarlett 6i6 1st gen, presonus vsl22 & audient id4. Is there any way to use these devices as an aggregate on windows 10? I know this can be done on mac but found nothing related to windows 2) If point 1 is not possible to do, what interface would you recommend for preamp input expansion? My 6i6 1st gen has spdif out/in - using this, what would be the most decently priced interface to expand number of inputs to 6 (2 from the 6i6 and 4 additional from the slave device)? Anything from Behringer?
Both VSL22 and ID4 can't be aggregated in Windows 10 successfully, as there is no way to sync the clocks. 1) Sell all of them and buy an interface with 6 or 8 inputs. 2) for better option, see option 1 above. Behringer FCA1616 is a great alternative at great price. Or similar range and option interface, and save yourself the headache. If it was to extend from 8 to 16, it's worth the effort, but to go from 2 to 6 or 8, not really. Hope this helps.
I actually tried asio4all generic driver (never knew the functionality before) and turned on the inputs for both id4 (output was via id4) and vsl22. Surprisingly there was no latency or audio distortion at 96 KHz 24 bit. 0.6 ms latency. So technically now i have the option of 3 mic pre inputs and one jfet di from the id4. If i do the same with 6i6 + vsl22, i'll have my 4 inputs for drum recording.
thank you for your entertaning video, and here I want to ask, it's about joining 2 interface afteral for now I use XR18 as my mixing console, and yeah it's working well for recording and usb playback, and here's the problem, as for on mixer only has 18ch, I tried to made them 36ch by (hopefuy) joining 2 of XR18, and by using asio4all but, there was 'crackling' noise for a period of time continuously is it because that's the performance of asio4all or what?
Here is my other video on the topic. ruclips.net/video/EczMDEFZdRM/видео.html You might have the buffer setting in ASIO4ALL too low, or the link to sync is not correctly setup.
RecordingStudio9.com thanks for replying man. there's actually a software called qzoom that does the real trick. it's not super smooth, but in case you hadn't, it's worth a try. best of luck
Could you please explain why the inputs are ganged together [ie 1+2 ect ] when 2 inputs are used whereas they appear individually when only one input is used.
By clicking the LINK option, it links them together as stereo. To have them separate channels, just unlink them. In the video example, I have them linked.
If you are referring to have the second Audio Interface not connected to PC via USB, then most likely not. Reason is that the analogue inputs/outputs of most audio interfaces do not route to ADAT in/out. The ADAT here is just used to sync the two interfaces. Hope that answers.
I have 18i20 1stGen with octopre mkii (16 combo inputs). I plan to record 24 to 32 channels... If i buy another another 18i20 (probably 3rd Gen) + octopre, will this method work? Will use it for live recording. Hope to hear from you.
Hello. Thank you very much for your videos. I have one question very important for me : do you know if it's possible to agregate in the same way an Helix (line 6 with 1 in and 1 out SPDIF) with a studioLive III 16 with only an AES out ?

Glad it’s still helpful
Spdif supports 2ch up to 192khz.
ADAT supports 8ch at 44.1 and 48khz and depending on your interface can support 4ch upto 96khz in smux
Thanks for the additional info.
thanks, Vatche! answered my question perfectly! can't wait for more Tracktion 5 tips!
A tip: you can watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
@Ignacio Bentley yup, I've been watching on Flixzone} for since december myself =)
@Ignacio Bentley definitely, I've been using flixzone} for years myself =)
thank you for all videos
Thanks and have a great time making music.
Thanks for your tips man, you maybe just saved my future drum recordings ;)
Glad to hear it. Hope you get great recordings.

This depends if the driver for the units recognizes them both, so you can see 2 audio interfaces, then yes.

It's not possible to integrate 1818VSL and FD8 as far as I can see. Even then, the FD8 has only 2 inputs with AD/DA converter.

gr8 vid... how do u clock using spdif.. i mean the connection, how to select master and slave
Via the driver of each of the units.
ok..that means there is a box to click or what
@@daddydanny5588 Watch 2:47 and 4:36. If you have a different audio interface then you need to find this out yourself.
ok thanx

@user-uk1is7uj9q this may depend on the manufacturer. Normally you can enable both devices in asio4all.
Hi, Can I connect a device with a bnc connector and the other with rca spdif connector?
No, different format and protocols
How stable is it cause I want to use it in a live situation..
All I can say is test it out beforehand.

It's not about driver compatibility, but the physical clock connection.
Thanks for watching

So 1818vsl S/PDIF out is connected to the fast track S/PDIF in ? or 1818 out and in are connected to fast track in and out ?
+Esteban Espinoza
You only need one connection from master to slave. In this case 1818vsl as master spdif out to M-Audio Fast track as slave spdif in.
