This was an experience in the theaters. You gotta remember that up to this point we’d never seen Denzel be a real bad guy. It was SHOCKING. My theater gasped when he shot Scott Glenn’s character. No one was expecting it. That’s when the movie turned and you realized that Denzel was on a whole other level here. Fucking brilliant.
It was an experience indeed. It came out almost a month after 9/11. This was my first time back in a theatre after being in a post 9/11 haze of constant news cycles being on at home all day long, and needing a break from our reality. I’m sure alot of people in that theatre felt the same way. It was easy to immerse yourself in this movie. I loved the Alonzo character so much that I knew I would name my future son, Alonzo. My kid loves this movie too and loves his name.
I wish I saw this movie in theaters. I was a kid and remember my cousins renting it like it was a big thing. I also remember seeing Denzel on all the buses, The Training Day poster was everywhere, of course I had no idea who he was. Just wondered why this guy with a durag was everywhere
Had the exact same experience: with many other actors this might have worked, but not to this grade. Denzel is someone well-respected and with so much gravitas: I remember seeing this in cinema and continuously weighing in my head whether this was a smart cop knowing how to position himself to be effective, or just a bent one. It’s almost like you don’t want him to be a bad guy in the end. At the same time: Ethan Hawke is an actor with just as much presence yet known for a varied history of roles. Which results in: you’re continuously thinking along with him and experiencing the movie literally as a ride-along. I forgot about the end part, but it’s kind of brilliant how - even when pushed into a bad situation with the drugs - Ethan’s character’s moral build is his central drive: he just jumps inbetween because he must. And that is actually what saves him in the end. Yeah, brilliant piece of movie history by now, and actually very rewatchable!
I don't think so he was nominated for an Oscar as well... best supporting actor, and everyone likes him his name just never got superstar reaction to it. But I've never heard anyone say anything other than "yeah he's great in everything" or something similar. He just happened to be with 1 of the greatest screen legends of all time who finally got his Oscar after many worthy performances already.
Hawke has always been like a leading man who never quite got to be a leading man. Always brings it in everything he does, but gets constantly overlooked.
The script for this movie is amazing. Every detail matters and theres so many twists. One of the most easily enjoyable movies ever, and plus one of the vest performances by Denzel Washington. A true classic.
Before that tub scene with Smiley and his guys, a few scenes before that Alonzo is on the phone with him and you hear him say "make sure that tub is clean" The detail 🔥
This is one of those movies that no matter how many times you see it you notice something new. I like how Denzel asked Ethan about his Spanish at the beginning, and then set him up with the Mexicans
Training Day is the first time I saw Denzel break out of that "hero" role he was typecast into. He's absolutely BRILLIANT in this. A favorite of mine for sure.
To me, I can't think of a bad performance from Denzel Washington. The script would be sub-par and he would still give it his all. That's why he's one of my favorite actors of all time. He played his role perfectly in this movie.
Actually, to me this is the only performance of his I actually love. 🤭 Sorry, I know it's personal taste. I also haven't seen a lot of movies with him. It's not particularly my favorite genre, but most movies, where I've seen him in, he was pretty much one note. Always plays the "tough" guy, his facial expressions almost always stay the same. My next favorite movie with him next to Training Day would probably be Deja Vu....
@@kentown8115 Book Of Eli, right. I almost forgot that one. But honestly, that one had my favorite Gary Oldman performance of all time. I absolutely loved him in that one. 😅🤩
Same. I was about 14 when I rented it on VHS from some corner store and watched it at a friend of my moms. It was an awkward situation for me at the time but the movie blew me away and took my mind off everything I was dealing with.
The BTS info for this movie is crazy. Antoine Fuqua was the first person to ever shoot in Baldwin Village [the neighborhood where all the Bloods and Eva Mendez lived] and many of the on scene extras were actual gang members. Easily one of Denzel's best and most memorable performances.
And the brilliance of Denzel Antoine Fuqua said he adlibbed most his tangent at the end when he was yelling at the guys in the neighborhood including "King Kong ain't got shit on me!" 😃
@@dive2drive314 I agree. Hollywood before this was very theatrical and over-the-top, not that I don’t enjoy that. Everything after this is just boring, undeveloped and formulaic; no substance.
The casting is so great that never once do you believe that Denzel is a bad guy until you can't deny it anymore. More heroic actors should play disgusting villain assholes with every once in awhile.
@@ladyhotep5189 They are but Heels really have that edge, the best lines, they draw conflict which helps drive the story even more. Rowdy Piper with his Piper's pit and in the Ring just knew how to get the audience worked up. You can tell Denzel's Alonso Harris just love to get Ethan Hawke's character worked up, bringing the best out of him.
Gotta give a shout out to the iconic Director of this movie, Antoine Fuqua. Some of his other great movies include “Tears of the Sun”(2003), “Brooklyn’s Finest”(2009), “Shooter”(2007) and “The Equalizer” franchise with Denzel among other films🔥🔥🔥
I love how Denzel and Antwan Fuqua described Denzel's character. That at one point he was most likely Jake, but overtime , the job swallowed him up. That he saw the only way to get justice was to bend the law, ambut in his bending he eventually breaks it. He eventually becomes one of the wolves he's supposed to take down. When the rhugs on the streets dont like or see you as No Good, you are lost. He has power, but even though he's not at the top of that power, he's arrogant and ruthless because he's close to those in power. He's able to abuse the power he has, only over the powerless. He hasn't arrested anyone, even had a rookie cop set to be killed. He's completely given up. As the drug dealer they robbed told Jake " You're completely like he was....". As Denzel said, "he had to die in the end", "wages of sin is death". No way he can do the thing's he's done for who knows how long and continue to live.
I’m trying to figure out how is it even possible these two have never seen Training Day and isn’t the other guy from Cali? This is literally Denzel’s most iconic film. I can still remember seeing this back in 2001 the day for the first time. Maybe I just hold Denzel to a different standard that it was impossible not to see this when it first premiered. He’s literally one of the best actors of all time in my opinion. I just don’t see how someone could wait of 2 decades to watch this at there age lol This one of these films I know word for word I’ve seen it countless times. It’s more so Denzel performance than the writing. Also Ethan Hawke this was the first film that comes to mind everytime I see his face because it’s so iconic. Two decades later Ive never changed my stance i still route for Alonzo until the very end he’s like Scarface to me.
Man these were the days. I remember seeing this for the first time and being blown away. They don't make them like this anymore. Another similar film that is directed and written by the same writer from Training Day (David Ayer) is 'Harsh Times' with Christian Bale. That one is worth a watch for sure!
I feel like people don’t give Ethan Hawke enough credit sometimes. Richard Linklater’s “Tape” is a prime example of how talented he is. In this movie, I feel like he purposefully allows Denzel to have the room to be the more colorful character and Hawke plays really well off of him
I find that it's always interesting when someone who normally plays the good guy, plays the bad guy. Denzel Washington is an awesome good guy and an awesome bad guy!
One of my favourite cop movies. I wish they had done a prequel movie about Denzel's character. I have a feeling he wasnt always like he is in training day and possibly like Ethan's character but the reality of the job corrupted him and be interesting to see how and why.
A few years ago they were talking about doing a show about Denzel’s character when he was a rookie. They were gonna get Michael B. Jordan for the role but it got scrapped
David Ayer did grow up in those hoods. He lived that life before his writing career. Great interview with Jon Bernenthal on Real ones. End of Watch is another one where his experience made it accurate.
Based off of a true story. Rafael Perez is what Denzel Washington bases his character off of. Look up the rampart scandal in LA, police from Crash were acting like gangbangers and all that. Crazy story tho and a good movie🔥
More films from director Antoine Fuqua I recommend watching are Tears of the Sun, Shooter and the Equalizer movies. Other movies like this I recommend watching are American Gangster, We Own the Night, Street Kings and End of Watch
It's always fun to see how long it takes people to realize he's just a bad cop. Nothing else. We've been conditioned to be on the side of the rogue cop that doesn't play by the rules. I love this movie because they took Denzel's sterling career and reputation and used it against the audience. He's charming, handsome, a cop, and smart but he's very plainly the bad guy.
Dr. Dre ( one of the corrupt cops with braids) , Snoop Dog, and singer Macy Gray ( the warrant scene) were all actors from the music industry. Ethan Hawk was awesome, however, Denzels performance was unbelievably outstanding.
I took 4 years of Latin as well and have been learning Spanish via Duolingo since the pandemic. Already halfway through Unit 3 already! Taking Latin definitely helped and I'm in my mid 40's! Older than you guys. I'm going to switch to Italian for awhile because I may be going to Italy for ten days in May and I want to be prepared. Learning languages is fun. I know only a tiny bit of Italian due to being a musician. Antoine Fugua directed "Training Day". This is the first time I've seen it since the first time I watched it a little over 20 years ago. It was very disturbing, but great!!
Brooklyns Finest is a good follow up for this one. You could almost look at Ethan Hawke in that movie as a version of Hoyt had he followed Alonzo's teachings.
Training Day is one of my favorite gangster crime movies of all time, also, a great performance win by Denzel Washington as Alonzo Harris as the villain in the movie.
Alonzo is terribly interesting on rewatch, as you can see him actively setting up Jake, and all the signs of how truly gone he is, but you also get the feeling like he kinda forgets what he has in store for Jake in certain moments, and starts to truly mentor him the way he believes is best. Such a multi-faceted villain.
Thing is with David Ayer is people seem to judge him on Suicide Squad alone and that's not fair, via studio interference. But the reason that his crime, cop-based movies were so good, is that he used be in the Navy I believe and worked with that world and you can clearly his tactical awareness with actors is so pin point. You look at the street-level realness in The first Fast and Furious which he contributed with a draft, Training Day, End of Watch, Sabotage, Harsh Times and SWAT, which are such good movies. Obviously, with Denzel, Hawke and Faqua Training day is on another level. I mean, i thought Ethan Hawke shouldve got his Oscar long with Denzel, as both were so, so good. Another Denzel film which is my fav is Glory. Such a good film and performance. And you if you look at a Ayer and lot of his films, like when he directed Street Kings, a movie I love. Loved the Keanu and Chris Evans partnership in it. He uses a lot of actors he's used in multiple films. Hector from F & F is in Training Day. The guy that let Jake pass to get to Alonso is in End of Watch and other Ayer protects. Terry Crews Training Day and Street Kings.
Denzil is so fucking powerful in this movie, like Hawke's character by the end you truely hate him, because we the audience have also been charmed by him and fooled into thinking his not playing by the rulebook is a necessary evil, until the moment he betrays Hawke and is all about saving his own ass... the end where the neighbourhood turn their back on him and his self-imploding was soooo satisfying
Fun Fact: Ethan Hawke wasn't gonna do the film until some big names were cast. Those names were Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Antoine Fuqua told Ethan's people that Snoop would be in a wheelchair and Dre would play a cop, and thats how Ethan was greenlit.
Always tell the story of my mother who refuses to watch this movie. She feels like he shoulda won for better roles than a villain. I understands but she missing out lol.
@@harvey4512 the movie makes a point about how persuasive & magnetic Denzel's character was. Also another point was made about how young & innocent Denzel's character was when he first got in. However what happens is you take small steps crossing the line until it becomes habitual & you start to change on the inside
20:29 - That woman is none other than "Macy Gray". She was famous for her music before she got into movies. Anyway thanks for a great reaction to one of the all time greatest films.
2000 and 2001 back to back were hands downs two of the greatest movies acting performances ever by Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington in Gladiator and Training Day both which won Oscars for best actor.
Hoyts character “magically” happened to rescue that girl and ran into her family. Is because yes LA is a big place but gang neighborhoods are not. Lonzo had a relationship with that gang. It’s crazy that a Canadian has to explain this to a couple of guys who live in LA
By the end of this movie I hated him and was not upset what happened to him and that shows due to my love for Denzel with any movie he's in. Ethan Hawe is not praised enough for his young innocent character that pulled up his boot straps. ❤❤
Fun Fact: There was an extra scene between Smiley and Jake where Smiley reveals that after he was supposed to kill Jake, he was supposed to burn Jake's family too. But also he basically told him that if he plays the Game right, he could make Chief.
The bearded "Wise Man" who told the pb story also played Mel the corrupt Vice cop in 'Scarface' while also appearing in Ghostbusters 2 as a hard-nosed judge. This role put him right in the middle
I am hereby starting a petition for a reaction to American Gangster, which is, in my opinion, another film Denzel should’ve won an Oscar for. Also another film where he plays the villain.
The guy who said Alonzo helped his nephew was a former gang member and now works in gang intervention in Compton. He did an incredible doc called Bastards of the Party about the origins of LA gang culture
Speaking of how good these two actors are, the director, Anton Fuqua, said in an interview that in some of the scenes when the dialogue on the pages was done and it was time for him to say "cut" instead he kept his mouth shut because Denzel and Ethan would keep going---improvising. He said much of it was so good he kept it in the movie.
That Oscar was deserved and knowing he was robbed for is performance as Malcom X. This movie doesn't have the success it had without Denzel's performance. Ethan Hawke as well was great. A very overlooked performance.

Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin and Raymond J. Barry. All amazing character actors.
This movie is a classic
Denzel's character was based on a real LAPD undercover cop who basically did the same things as depicted in this movie.
My mom stop watching in the middle of it cause she was upset he was so bad
Yeah, the fact he got snubbed for Malcolm X but wins it as a dirty cop still bugs me. But he definitely is amazing in this.
@@LembeckIsStaying that’s my favorite movie and I still can’t believe he didn’t win for that role.
I am the only one pissed about Ethan Hawkes Character. Because he Is a Stressy Rookie and Should Have Just Known Better From The Start
@@harvey4512 the movie makes a point about how persuasive & magnetic Denzel's character was. Also another point was made about how young & innocent Denzel's character was when he first got in. However what happens is you take small steps crossing the line until it becomes habitual & you start to change on the inside
21:00 Her name is Macy Gray. She is a professional singer who had a couple of popular songs.
20:29 - That woman is none other than "Macy Gray". She was famous for her music before she got into movies. Anyway thanks for a great reaction to one of the all time greatest films.
To this day I still say “King Kong ain’t got shit on me”
2000 and 2001 back to back were hands downs two of the greatest movies acting performances ever by Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington in Gladiator and Training Day both which won Oscars for best actor.
Hoyts character “magically” happened to rescue that girl and ran into her family.
Is because yes LA is a big place but gang neighborhoods are not.
Lonzo had a relationship with that gang.
It’s crazy that a Canadian has to explain this to a couple of guys who live in LA
Outstanding movie, Denzel gives one of the best performances I've seen on any film
This movie has been in my top 5 since I saw it. Love this movie so much
Denzel Washington might just be the greatest actor ever
By the end of this movie I hated him and was not upset what happened to him and that shows due to my love for Denzel with any movie he's in. Ethan Hawe is not praised enough for his young innocent character that pulled up his boot straps. ❤❤
Been waiting for this one!
Your faces during most of this was intense alone!! 😂😂
Denzel took inspiration from real-life crooked cop Rafael Pérez for this role
Fun Fact: There was an extra scene between Smiley and Jake where Smiley reveals that after he was supposed to kill Jake, he was supposed to burn Jake's family too. But also he basically told him that if he plays the Game right, he could make Chief.
The bearded "Wise Man" who told the pb story also played Mel the corrupt Vice cop in 'Scarface' while also appearing in Ghostbusters 2 as a hard-nosed judge.
This role put him right in the middle
I like that they used real bangers from the hood in this movie
Athens Park Bloods
The woman with the kid is the singer Macy Gray, who was big for a minute in the late 90s early 00s.
Speaking of how good these two actors are, the director, Anton Fuqua, said in an interview that in some of the scenes when the dialogue on the pages was done and it was time for him to say "cut"
instead he kept his mouth shut because Denzel and Ethan would keep going---improvising. He said much of it was so good he kept it in the movie.
Great Reaction John and Andrew! Denzel is so great in this movie! 👍
OMG! You said "POCKET SAND"!!!! RIP Johnny Hardwick!
"King Kong ain't got s*** on me!"
John shows up for his first day of reacting...
John: "I'll do anything you want."
Greg: "My ninja."
The guy with the goatee is Harris Yulin. Among other films, he was Scarface and Clear and Present Danger.
"ZENITH AND A GREAT FALL!" Just like King Kong!!!! Wow.
Great review and reaction! I enjoyed your discussion after movie. Subscribed.
That Oscar was deserved and knowing he was robbed for is performance as Malcom X. This movie doesn't have the success it had without Denzel's performance.
Ethan Hawke as well was great. A very overlooked performance.
Always tread lightly around the iron smile in The Hood
both of you together... idc what it is. Instant thumbs all day.
Did you know....that originally, the producers wanted to cast Samuel L. Jackson and Eminem for the roles played by Denzel and Ethan???
Wtf 😂 weird combo
The angry lady asking for a warrant is Macy Gray
“King Kong ain got SHI on me” and proceeded to die the same way Kong did by getting shot down WOW
Denzel is the GOAT... It's funny how people talk down on suicide squad but it's better than most of DCs movies which is a long list of bad movies.
