  • In Red Dead Redemption 2, trains play a significant role, offering both a means of transportation and opportunities for player interaction. Unlike previous entries in the series, players can not only rob trains but also take control and drive them. When driving, players have control over various aspects such as ringing the bell, using the whistle, braking, reversing, and accelerating.
Trains serve as a form of fast travel, with players able to purchase tickets at any train station. Ticket prices vary based on the distance of travel. The rail network spans most of the game's territory, from Big Valley in the west to Annesburg in the east, excluding the southwestern region. While a rail line exists in New Austin between Benedict Point, Armadillo, and MacFarlane's Ranch, only cargo trains run, and tickets cannot be purchased.
The game features five distinct railroad companies. The Central Union Railroad, the Lannahechee and Midland Rail Co., and the Southern and Eastern Railway operate in Ambarino, Lemoyne, New Hanover, and the Big Valley region of West Elizabeth. In New Austin, the Southwestern Railroad and the Pacific Union Railroad from the previous game are present, with only the latter's trains running. A newspaper article mentions the Southern and Eastern Railway Company being acquired by the Pacific Union Railroad Company in 1907.
Two types of locomotives are available in the game. The first is a 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler based on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's "Thatcher Perkins," while the other is a 4-4-0 American based on New York Central & Hudson River Railroad #999, known for allegedly reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph in 1893. The 4-6-0 design is primarily used by the Central Union Railroad and the Lannahechee and Midland Rail Co., with the Southern and Eastern Railway also operating one. The 4-4-0 locomotive is used by the Southern and Eastern Railway and the Pacific Union Railroad.
In this particular video, the train is operated by the Central Union Railroad, which may be a nod to the real-life former Central Pacific Railroad.
