I like how the song kinda gives you a false sense of security, and then it hits you, she moves into the mic and it starts to muffle a bit. She is MAD.
The expression on your face when the beat dropped was perfection.
To me, "then sank in stoned oblivion" means that when they were out of the public eye, he would get so stoned on drugs to the point that everything else disappeared; he basically faded himself into a drug coma.
This is song is about Matty Healy from the band 1975. They had known each other for 10 years and flirted but when she was just getting over her relationship with Joe after 6 years….Matty started Love Bombing her…telling her he wanted to get married and have kids. He promised her everything she wanted. But then after two weeks he took off and ghosted her…this left her broken and not knowing what happened.
And he deserves everything he's getting here!

The single lyric that stands out to me the most, even without what follows it, is "were you sent by someone". Not even because of it being where she switches gears and the song picks up, but the implications of that phrase are just kind of chilling. She's literally like, after all this time being in my life, were you just sent to be a spy, to not be real and only to invade to learn what will hurt me the most and do it to me.

The song is about Baez's reaction to a telephone call she received from Bob Dylan ten years after they broke up. Oblivion…. It’s a term for HIGH. He was an addict. Take a hit and it sends you into oblivion. Oblivion also used for the moment after organism in some books.
It starts with her asking if any of the things he said to her were even true. He promised her everything she wanted, and acted like such a great guy… basically love-bombing. Once he got her though, he treated her like an “also-ran”. In a race, you have the people who won the race and those who place with good times. An “also-ran” is somebody who was just kinda there… maybe they ran the race, but nobody really cares because there was nothing special about them.
He probably did try to buy pills from a friend of a friend, because while he originally acted so smooth, he turned out to be a toxic mess with a drug problem. “Sank in stoned oblivion”, he laid around, stoned out of his mind… oblivion is basically unconscious or totally out of it.
This is about Matty Healy… so he did all that and then, when she started to get media criticism for being with him, he couldn’t take the heat and he ghosted her.
In the bridge where she asks all those questions, she’s coming up with wild theories about why he bolted, because he never explained it to her.

If about Matty, I don't know why she thought jumping into something with him right after Joe was going to work. Doesn't another song (I believe Fresh Out the Slammer) basically say now that she's free from the playing house with Joe going nowhere (surprise everyone don't play house & be pretend married), she knows just who she will call? That says so much about how she wasn't actually all in with Joe & so had feelings for Matty. Glad its "really really" over but hope she sees how obvious what appears to be "just following her heart" doesn't work out.
