  • Introducing Dalton to our team. In this episode I'm training Dalton in unit #17 our Peterbilt 579 road tractor and our trailer T-1 a Trail-Eze TE801 float, ramp, super-tilt, trailer as it may be know in various parts of the world. We go to rescue a stranded driver from a HEATED situation....His brakes or wheel bearings heat up and lock up on a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) bulk tank filled with Propane. Thankfully the driver stopped before things reached the combustion point. Talk about an "explosive" situation! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

Reminds me of when I first started work, many moons ago. To get a good trainee to be an essential part of your company, needs a good teacher. You are one of them Ron. Some companies don't have good teachers, and therefore, don't know how to invest, which a recruit is. You do. Keep it up. What is a good idea is to wrap tools that belong to the vehicle being brought in wrapped up in boxes/bags with your company logo and contact details on it. Word of mouth is just as essential as paying for advertising

Yes, probably a cooked bearing or a seized caliper. After a couple of hours, it cooled off enough to allow forward movement. That truck is a rolling bomb, even at the best of times.
When they flip, its a major hazmat incident, with miles of highway shut down.
Careful attention to detail pays off, and you can see that, in every decision Ron makes.

When I hauled haz mat here in California, on flatbed, trucks, standard was 4 chains(We used 5/16ths on light trucks), and 3/8ths on big trucks) depending on weight, I used 6 chains. I hauled mainly military vehicles. I doubled each chain. Only used ratchet binders on 80 thousand lb loads. Course you folks are recovery vehicles.

Two things, presuming the bobtail has air ride, do you dump it and compress the mechanical springs, or leave it up, and just tighten up against the air? And secondly, if you’re hauling a hazmat truck on the trailer, do the placards on the bobtail count as the placards, or need the rig be placarded too? I could just wait until the end and see what you do, but that’s no fun. I’d imagine they’d count with exception of the front of the cab, but I’ve only done hazmat once, and not as a wrecker operator.
And thank you a thousand times for your words of wisdom on cone placement and not having your back to traffic. When I’m on fire scenes on the highway, I end up on cone and sign duty, and walk the exact same way you instruct. I can actually walk backwards fairly quickly now. But given the number of times I’ve had to jump over the guardrail to dodge a motorist, it is probably the most valuable first day advice you can give.
    Stay safe, god bless.
    Jake

Placards on "load". HazMat shipping document on seat when truck is parked, in driver's door pouch when driver is in truck. Wrecker driver should have it when hauling/towing along with Emergency Response Guidebook. Any incident with wrecked propane...run uphill and if possible upwind asap. Vapors are heavier than air and sink to lowest point in area...one spark...boom.
      Dump air from suspension.

Enjoying the accelerated drive, it's a good compromise between those who do/don't like the 'to the scene' segment. One observation, folks on those roads sure seem to understand lane discipline better that Colorado where I live or pretty much anywhere I've driven since moving to the states. I thought "actually using the left lane for overtaking rather than blocking traffic" was a misunderstood mind boggling concept this this side of the Pond. Is that just better drivers or better enforcement?

I had a thought about this particular rig. When loading and unloading, all the strobe lights appear to be obstructed. What if you had 2 prominent strobes, on tripods, similar to your DeWalt work light units? Placed behind the recovery scene, they would be fully visible throughout the operation.

When we were called we were not told which wheel or wheels were locked up and overheated. If it had been a rear wheel we still could have towed it from the rear, but I felt much safer doing it with the trailer so that ALL wheels were off the ground and not rolling. As it turns out, its a good thing we did it this way, because we found that the brake pedal was hanging, which is what caused the wheels/brakes to overheat and lock up....so ALL the brakes were dragging, but the right front was the tightest adjusted so it heated first. You can go back and look on the video and notice that when we load and unload the truck that its brake lights are illuminated. Had we towed it and not noticed the brake pedal being hung, it could have been a very bad day. Thanks for watching and God bless.

Emergency Services will NOT thank you if you have that Argument since they're the ones that will be forced to scrape whats left of you off the road with a spatula...assuming they don't need a squeegee, shop vac and pressure washer to clean you up...

I have always been impressed with Ron's emphasis on Safety, Organization, and Cleanliness. This video also demonstrates his skills as a teacher. He does a great job of explaining; What to do, while Demonstrating, stating Why he does the task this way to show relevance. Ron has great Patience with his student and constantly gives Encouragement while anticipating questions students may be reluctant to ask. Strong respect to you, Ron.

Ron, I really truly enjoy all of your videos, I have watched a lot of different towing /recovery videos from other channels, and they don't seem as safe/by the book safety as every one of your videos, I also like how you explain every step of what you do, and treat us, just like part of your family, and we think of your family as part of our families as well!! Be careful/safe every single day God bless you, Ron/family!!! It's better to be extra safe, than deadly sorry!!!

I hope Dalton takes the time to look through all your previous videos, Ron, they are very helpful for showing procedure and safety. It might help Dalton as well to have someone walk through tool identification and use as well. I hope the man does well. We need good recovery teams out there.
