My childhood heroes, my favorite song. I just read Paul Stanley book and is fantastic, I’m rediscovering such a great rock band. Love your great skills honoring amazing music.
Mine too! I’m actually going to a Joe Jackson show tomorrow with a fellow who worked with Kiss when they first started. His name is Ed Solan and he’s got so many great stories.
Peter Criss is the reason that I ever picked up a pair of drumsticks and never put them down. Say what you want about KISS's musicianship (Gene will always be acknowledged as an underrated bass player in my eyes, as is Ace and Paul as guitar players) as a band, there is a very small number of groups who can match or surpass KISS's influence. Those first eight albums or so, including Alive and Alive II, had an immeasurable impact on me as a young musician, Destroyer and Rock And Roll Over in particular (I always loved Peter riding the crash cymbal at the tail end of "Dr. Love"). Like your attraction to Gene, I think my interest in Peter had less to with his drumming and more to do with the fact that I knew what his makeup design was saying. He was a cat. I knew what cats were, so I should play drums because the Catman played drums. Though much can't be said for Peter's technical ability as a drummer, his influence is undeniable, and I would argue that that is more important.
Peter was the perfect drummer for KISS. His jazz foundation is what propels this tune. Ezrin had to work with him some but he couldn't give him more heart than he already had. I remember hearing Shock Me when LG came out in 1977. He's so in the pocket it's ridiculous. Gene is a more than capable bass player too. Those first three albums are a goldmine for bass players.
I agree completely, Brodie. I too started playing drums due to Peter’s influence. His parts on early songs like “Love Her All I Can” are tasty and powerful. In addition, he, like Ringo before him proved that a drummer could be an equal member of the band, writing and singing songs, as well.
In my opinion Gene IS NOT underrated LOL! I have plenty of reference to back that. I've seen him live multiple times, seen him at a clinic, live interviews, etc...A recording studio, good engineers and producer can make a bad musician sound decent. @@TJH3113
I have lusted after Guild B301/2's since age 16. A beautiful and original design not imitated or derived from another builder. After all these years, I've never had a chance to play one. Now that I've actually heard a B301 for the first time-- it is everything I hoped it would be. The Guild just moved to the top spot on my Bass Wish List. Gene Simmons was a huge influence on me as well. He helped bring the bass out of the shadows and proved (along with Michael Anthony) to me that a bass player could also be a front man. My influences have shifted and changed over time but those two players were absolutely essential in the beginning of my life-long love affair with bass.
The Guild was a bass I'd always wanted but never had the opportunity to try. It was a gamble that paid off because they are among my favorite instruments, I've got 6 of them in a variety of models. Same here, my influences have shifted as well but I still look back fondly at those I've left behind. Thanks for the great comment.
That was awesome. Great playing. You nailed it. So good, I was imagining you in the studio playing the song and then during the breakdown you take a drink out of the mug and bam, you're right back in it. That was classic. That was fun to watch. Thanks
I love the Brightness of your Bass. It's punchy, tight, lots of bottom but so clear. Have you made a video of your instrument setup that gives such a fantastic sound? We would love to know what type of strings you use and Amp settings. You do a great job on all your covers, thanks!
Ahhhh Hell Yeah.... Just the right song at just the right time!!! I'm so glad I subbed you. You have posted so many videos of songs that I love and only wish I could play half as well as you that I've lost track. Best wishes to you and your family for a Happy 2016!!!! Cheers, Donn

And here I am just taking apart your 'Accidents will Happen' video and then you post this. I'll NEVER get the right hand on this one. AMAZING cover. I got the first 3 Kiss albums as a re-release back in '77 or '78 I think. Then I got Alive II with the Kiss Army tattoos and posters. I live in LA and I see Gene Simmons all the time. Only spoke to him once, but he's always out on the town at Dinners, Movies, Hiking in the mountains with his wife. Kudos on picking my favorite Kiss Song.
Just for a moment there, as the first break was starting after the 2nd chorus, it looked like your usually reserved self was nearly overcome by the Daemon bass player itself! Thank you for your work here. You're saving me a ton of prep time and teaching me quite a bit. And don't be afraid to let that Daemon out!
Excellent. Hard Luck Woman is another great bass line. A lot of walking underneath the chord changes. Very active, on the verge of overplaying, but somehow works really well and is not intrusive.
Very cool! Brings back some great memories. I was already playing bass before KISS hit the airwaves but I was instantly hooked on Gene Simmons' pounding, hard rock lines and quick little riffs. Detroit Rock City is probably the best example of that. We covered that song in one of the bands I was in so long ago. Used to have a B302 as well (1978). Great bass, easy to play fast and a wide range of tones. Had it for about 8 years before it was destroyed while being shipped back to the US after an overseas tour. Couldn't find another one when I went shopping with the check from the insurance company and ended up buying a used 78 Precision which I've had ever since, nearly 30 years. It's been my favorite all these years and the only one I've kept to now. Still, I miss that B302 from time to time. Thanks again for all the great tunes you post and all the best for the New Year!
You crack me up.... the huge Troy coffee break, I would have peed if you picked up a news paper.....You started smiling after the coffee, wonder if you thought the same...hahaaa. Well done as always...
I had to watch the video to see what your comment meant. In short, treatment for throat cancer made it so I couldn't go for very long without a sip of something. The smile was just an affirmation of the iconic double-guitar riff that was to come. Thanks!
I really liked the tone you got from this bass, I agree that it sounds like in between a precision and a rickenbaker, I also agree that it is one of Gene's best basslines, but the E flat tuning was being used by Black Sabbath live before they tuned even lower, and even earlier by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I have no idea who started using it. And some bands only used them in some songs.
Wonderful cover! ...and I LOVE how you take a little paus around 2:30 and have a sip of coffee... or whatever your choice of beverage happen to be ;) Rock on!!
Very Un American not to appreciate Kiss and all they've contributed to Rock N Roll. (Screw the 6 dislikes). No doubt Gene and the bass are the driving force in this one. One of my favorites here my good dude 🤘🏼. Then comes Christine Sixteen. My wife is from Ace's neighborhood. Well done my good dude 👍👍👍
I work with a fellow, Ed Solan...super nice guy. He was Kiss' first sound-man and recorded their first demos. Any really early photograph you've ever seen of Kiss was, most likely, taken by him. He is still in touch with all the members but is probably closest with Ace. Ed was the guy who put Ace's solo band together, with Anton Fig and John Regan. He's got some great stories to tell.
Great story Troy. I dig the New Bass it sounds awesome. Great tune to cover it, what a great ending in this song....LOL. I hope you and your family have the merriest of Christmases and a very prosperous New Year. Cheers.
Awesome, I really enjoy your post not only for the perfect musicianship but the details in your comment description. The post also makes me think back and like you I think it was Kiss (Gene Simons) that was my inspiration for taking up the bass. There was Rush (Getty Lee) and Kansas (David Hope) but looking back Kiss was my indoctrination into rock. There was AM radio before that but but Kiss Alive and Destroyer must have came prepackaged with an air guitar and I couldn't stop playing it. So within a couple or years of wearing down my parents several years of clarinet lessons and school band all was tossed, I got my first bass and I never looked back. If you are looking for a cover how about Working Man no one on you tube does it correctly, not that I can but if anyone can you could
A great track - as a kid i loved the two guitars playing together in the solo, and how they played in the end. But you playing the bass makes me realize the value of the bass in this song, so I immediately started rehearsing it on my acoustic Fender.

Nice playing man! B 301!!! I got a B302 that I've had since HS. It was defretted. I wanna get the frets back in it before I put it back in the rotation.
+Kemet Kemet Thanks. Long story with these Guilds. I bought a converted fretless B-302 a few months ago. I don't really have an interest in playing fretless but I got it for a good price and figured, if I really liked it, I could have the frets put back in. Turns out, I really did like the sound, but mostly with just the bridge pick up selected. I got this bass super cheap but still got ripped on it because it has pretty severe neck issues. I really love everything about this bass. I bought the black one behind me and love it as well. I could see it becoming my main instrument. Realizing that I would most likely never take the fretless out of its case, I had it re-fretted. The guy did a super job. However, the E-string pick up magnet is very weak and that string's output is very low. It wasn't really noticeable when the bass was fretless for some reason. I was going to have the p/u taken out of this bass and put into the 302 but just today a bridge p/u went up for sale on eBay and I snagged it. Oy. Told you it was a long story.
What more can I say, It's Detroit Rock Freakin' City! Great job as usual. I play this in both of my bands. However, I incorporate some of Gene's licks (not the lick Ace's Adam Apple lick either) from more recent live versions. It spices up the groove. Well done. I'll throw a request while I have you. Green Earrings. Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year.
Kiss! Woot! Whoom! Nailed it brother! I was a total Kiss fan before Rush. I still have my Kiss Alive! vinyl. It's interesting that Kiss and Rush toured for a time. I have only four Kiss songs sittin on my iPhone right now Detroit Rock City - Destroyer 1976 100,000 Years (Live) - Alive! 1975 (cause the drum solo of course) She - Dressed to Kill 1975 Watchin' You - Hotter Than Hell 1974 Oh - and Thanks for the 2015 jams man. All the best to you and yours. May 2016 be better than ever!
Excellent job, as always... and awesome tone! I think this is my favourite bass guitar among the many you own :D Should record more videos with this one!
Thanks a lot. This bass has a maxxed out truss rod and a pretty big twist in the neck, thought it's still very playable. I may use it for some de-tuned stuff.
I'm impressed on two levels: one, the guitar. I have a Guild B401-A, with an active preamp, but I will tell you that your tone is monster. Round, clean, distinct, rich, tonal. Everything you want in a bass. (Mine has the preamp that boosts the tone,) but there is NOTHING wrong with your setup. What were your pot settings, and what rig are you running? Second, your play is super tight and clean and on the beat. Very impressive, (and Gene is a pick user, so you are replicating both his attack and speed with your fingers.) Most impressive, and very tasty. So I commend both your gear and your play. I'm getting back into it after a very long hiatus, and I'm hopeful to start getting those tones and that tightness you've got. Well done!
Ha! I started playing bass because of Gene too. However, I thought bass was the easier instrument to play. I always dug more on Peter and Ace though. Peter, because we were cat people, and Ace because he was Space-Ace ... not really driven by any musical reason at that point. Just a kid thinking that space, cats, fire breathing and spitting blood was cool ... and it was. Still is. All these yrs later, I realize that Paul is the musical power house in the band, and my respect for him has grown the most. That is to say, it's really only reached the respect I always had for the others, gimicky as my respect was/is. I really do love KISS. Just fun music. Nice cover. Nice Whooms. That's something my playing never picked up on. No Whooms for me. Cheers! -Bill
+Conky Thanks. I've been thinking about it but I don't have the ability to record my bass direct and speak once. I could just mike the amp like I used to do but it wouldn't sound as good.
Wow you got the Guild ! Love it! Looks exactly like mine. I added Zero Mod rest to mine (of course) but I doubt there are enough of them around to make them. Also added "stealth hum cancelling" to mine under the guard. Wanted to keep that cool single coil but I HATE hum.... As usual a top shelf job on the song.
+Zero-Mod Yeah, I liked the fretless 302 so much and preferred the sound of the bridge p/u only, that I had to get a 301. Unfortunately, the neck on this is shot although it still plays alright and the intonation is fine. I've since had the fretless refretted, gotten a black 301 as well as a SB202. Sorry for the tardy reply, I'm trying to get caught up.
No worries mate, fame has it's downside eh ? SO cool you have become part of the Guild B301 302 cult \m/ Some MORE nice ones are on Ebay now! Seems to be a Haley's Comet kind of thing.
That was a great one, and it looks like you're having a blast! That verse riff is the coolest. The bass has a nice tone to it, kinda snappy on the higher end, round and full on the low. Have you ever seen a Guild X-702? A shop I used to work at had the guitar version, weird lookin' thing. About half of Hendrix's stuff is tuned down. I suspect some of the Beach Boys songs are too. Thank you for the kind words, the feeling is mutual :) Merry Christmas, Happy New Year & "Whoom On, Brother!"
+JimmyJames714 It was fun. Great bass line. To me, the bass's sound is right between a Precision and a Ric. I have seen a few X-702's, talk about a metal looking instrument.
I thought Bob Ezrin wrote the bass line and guitar solo for Detroit Rock city. I can't confirm the bass part ... but Gene said it was influence by Isaac Hayes theme song for Shaft.
The story goes, this bass part was not played by Gene but by Bob Ezrun. And in past live shows he did not play that fast lick -- but in recent years he does. In other words...he got better lol! You did a great job. The fingers give it more fatness.
@@TJH3113dont believe the haters. Kiss get a lot of crap. Lip synching and gene didnt play here and there. Dont believe it. I saw a few shows in the last weeks. Live. Mistakes and all.
@@bobbyfoster3769 It's unclear but the most common claim is that Bob Ezrin played the bass on Detroit Rock City. Paul and Ace have been claimed to have played a lot of the bass tracks on KISS records.

Now you've done thsi song, there's no doubt in my mind that this song had some killer bass lines...:) Nicely done!
+Sameet .Ali Soni Thanks.
you are great man .... i love your style.
+FabioMCgil Thanks.
+David Korr Thanks. I'll check it out.
Kiss! Woot! Whoom! Nailed it brother! I was a total Kiss fan before Rush. I still have my Kiss Alive! vinyl. It's interesting that Kiss and Rush toured for a time.
I have only four Kiss songs sittin on my iPhone right now
Detroit Rock City - Destroyer 1976
100,000 Years (Live) - Alive! 1975 (cause the drum solo of course)
She - Dressed to Kill 1975
Watchin' You - Hotter Than Hell 1974
Oh - and Thanks for the 2015 jams man. All the best to you and yours. May 2016 be better than ever!
same for me. from kiss to rush. ironic. miles apart musically but kind of joined like brothers on the road touring
+greenoak1 Thanks a lot. "She" was the first song I ever tried to learn by ear and I remember struggling so badly with it.
Beautiful bass, love the tone as well. Great covers as usual! Love your videos!
+Dan Bassman Thanks a lot.
Kick ass, really nice.
+justin Middleton Thanks.
great! kiss is so fun to bass to. gs is a great bassist.
+sticksbass Thanks.
Great job. I like All Videos.
Very well done. Great technique too!
Great job
Thank you
Very nice!
+Hugo CSF Thanks.
Great job as always Troy!!
+mdotn9 Thanks.
Greatest band ever, as far as I'm concerned.
Cool.
excellent dude, amazing playing
Awesome cover also the reason I got into playing bass keep em coming 👍🏻
+Ant K Thanks.
Beautiful my brother...just awesome !!!!!
Well done!
Love it!
So glad! Thanks.
awesome man. your covers seem to cover everything I love. keep it up
+YYZ JJ Thanks.
+TJH3113 this may seem like a stupid question, but what kind of bass is that you're playing?
+Tim Bogan It's a Guild B-301 with a twisted neck.
that's awesome man, great job !
thanks!
That bass sounds awesome, and sweet mask collection!
Killer as always!
+jmcrae825 Thanks.
Crushed it as usual man!
Cheers!
-Bill
Thanks for the great comment!
I like how you pitched up the recording! Sounds more exciting.
Great to hear. It's mostly because I hate tuning my basses down.
@@TJH3113 I agree with that, more annoying than down tuning a Guitar lol.
awsome bass line love it5
PERFECT!!
Bro, you go off!
god, so good!
Thanks!
Excellent!... Why is Gene Simmons not regarded as one of the best? He is rock solid original.
+Patrick Garrett Thanks.
You looked like you had a lot of fun doing this one 🤘🤘
I'm not sure how that happened.
Freaking awesome, time for me to learn this.
One of my favorite KISS bassline, thank you so much for the cover :)
Very cool! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Awesome! Any plans on a collection video?
+Conky Thanks. I've been thinking about it but I don't have the ability to record my bass direct and speak once. I could just mike the amp like I used to do but it wouldn't sound as good.
Perfect!!!
Thanks.
Wow you got the Guild ! Love it! Looks exactly like mine. I added Zero Mod rest
to mine (of course) but I doubt there are enough of them around to make them.
Also added "stealth hum cancelling" to mine under the guard. Wanted to keep
that cool single coil but I HATE hum....
SO cool you have become part of the Guild B301 302 cult \m/
Some MORE nice ones are on Ebay now!
I have seen a few X-702's, talk about a metal looking instrument.
you make it look so easy.. sip of coffee... back to work. Ha ha. Great cover!
+Noculartech Thanks. Nothin is easy.
I just finished Paul Stanley's book. Did you know bob Ezrin wrote the riff for DRC? Great job Troy as usual.
+Brian Barton I believe it. Thanks a lot.
Killer videos, great work:D
Awesome!
Thanks!
I thought Bob Ezrin wrote the bass line and guitar solo for Detroit Rock city. I can't confirm the bass part ... but Gene said it was influence by Isaac Hayes theme song for Shaft.
Bob Ezrin also played piano bass keys on the song giving the bass that much more punch.
The story goes, this bass part was not played by Gene but by Bob Ezrun. And in past live shows he did not play that fast lick -- but in recent years he does. In other words...he got better lol! You did a great job. The fingers give it more fatness.
I've heard that as well. I've also heard that Kiss has been playing to a lot of backing tracks these days, so who knows? Thank you, Nelson!
I can't find anything to that story, where did you learn that?
@@TJH3113dont believe the haters. Kiss get a lot of crap. Lip synching and gene didnt play here and there. Dont believe it. I saw a few shows in the last weeks. Live. Mistakes and all.
good cover!
+Manoel Ferraz Thanks.
Good tone
Thanks!
My favorite KISS tune. Love Gene's bass part in this song. Might have to subscribe...
+Bobby Foster Thanks.
It wasn't Gene's bass part, someone else played it. To this day Gene cannot play it correctly.
@@publicanimal Ok, so who else supposedly played it? I've seen/heard him play it numerous times. Or is this just Gene hate?
@@bobbyfoster3769 It's unclear but the most common claim is that Bob Ezrin played the bass on Detroit Rock City. Paul and Ace have been claimed to have played a lot of the bass tracks on KISS records.
@@publicanimalplease stop. These false stories
awesome
+Electricity Mystery Thanks.
good job brother
Thanks.
