  • How to set up a Medium or Large ALICE pack/rucksack. Sorry for the quality-- I'm not very impressed with this video editing software, and my camera sucks anyway. Been awhile since I made a video, and this was made in several parts, so it may get repetitive at times. Thanks for watching though!

    I know this is old, but this is by far the most thorough set-up video I have seen for the ALICE packs. The shaky camera work is completely excuseable given the content. Thanks.

    Great video, this is really useful information!
    "Prices more than 50$ you're being ripped off" - Today the frame with straps and pad costs from 50 to a 100$...

    For anyone who bought non military issued shoulder straps. I bought *fire force* shoulder straps. They don't have the quick release like the military issued straps. Had to undo the top part of the strap and feed the whole strap through the bottom loop. Thanks for the video; very informative about which slots to pass the webbing through.

    Nothing wrong with sewing. Been doing trim work (upholstery) on; auto,marine,leather and other gear repairs with a 1952 singer 155 machine since 1990. If your not careful, you'll sew right through your hand to whatever your stitching together! LOL. I learned from my old boss who was in the navy sewing parachutes and rigging on an aircraft carrier. Nice to be able to do your own work and show some american craftsmanship. Always loved my alice packs.

    I just got an A.L.I.C.E pack from a garage sell around the corner. I was going to pass on it because neither of us knew how all the straps went. The shoulder straps where mounted to the bottom of the frame. So he said I could just have it. After watching your video I saw what a great pack it is so I went back and gave him $5

      I've had mine for 10 years or so and just recently got some stuff back from my brother's house and while cleaning it up wanted to make sure that it was actually setup correctly from when i bought it at the army navy store (figured it would be a good one to hitchhike across america with my dog.) well it was but it hurt my shoulders after a while and hearing him say on the video it'll hurt if they're wrong and while they weren't backwards one isn't the right one (a bit smaller and doesn't angle out as much as the other strap does. Now hopefully i can find the right one for cheap

    Just purchased an ALICE pack, medium, with frame and new straps and waist belt. Must assemble myself. Never used one so your video is invaluable...had to laugh about the pricing...you cannot now find a new one with frame and straps for less than $120 on ebay so their reputation for quality and durability has now gotten out! Anyway with shipping mine was less than $85, as the pack is used. Top liner is peeling a bit but I plan on redoing it with that paintable or spray on rubber coating. I have used it many times to coat tool handles and it is flexible and water tight. I like the comments about using plastic bags for waterproofing certain items like extra clothing, fire kit, etc. anyway, I know I will be coming back to you video when my bag arrives! Gonna set it up as a 3 day get back home bag and keep in my Tacoma camper!

    We used to laugh at soldiers who made their Alice Packs into Christmas Trees ie sticking stuff like e tools and water bottles on the outside as we did a ton of Jungle training you quickly learn that anything attached to the outside of your pack catches on everything most of us Infantry got rid of those tiny tri fold E Tools for the Vietnam or Korean Issued E Tools with the pick on one side this was kept inside the pack bigger shovel head means you can dig in faster. We also customised our own packs as well with sewing awls most of us would sew a claymore pouch on the top flap of the Alice

    one thing I have gotten used to when camping in tropical locations is to have an extra carabiner and a piece of paracord to hang the pack about head height on one if my hammock trees......if you have a good water proof liner you don't have to worry about the pack getting wet.......but ants, scorpions, etc crawling in it because it is on the ground is a problem.........I have heard of leaf cutter ants cutting pieces out of packs and taking them away.......

    The bar that the shoulder straps go through rides into my spine near the neck, making it super uncomfortable. is this an issue with strap adjustment or is it a padding issue? if its strap adjustment, where/ how should they be adjusted?

  • @JoshuaModerwell
    @JoshuaModerwell 7 лет назад +1

    The company or companies that manufactures alice pack straps should've put padding inside so it would be more relaxing on the shoulders. Here's a little travia, alice pack straps and pack frames were used for the proton packs that were made for Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (2) (1989) and the actors complained of how heavy they were so the prop makers had put padding inside the straps that were seen of a few scenes of Ghostbusters II ( i.imgur.com/NEA0AaI.png ).

    Route the sinch straps over the top of the frame. It puts the ruck higher on your back. Tape down ALL the metal, everywhere. Show people how to tie down all the attachments with 550. Do a shake to see what makes noise and fix it.

  • @HeSavesMankind

    I'm too fat to wear the belt even at the longest setting. Do we need to use the belt or is that just so it doesn't buck up against you or make noise when you run? Also, I'm trying to assemble a complete camo quick-release clip alice pack. Which parts of it are camo? I know the shoulder straps and bag are, but what about the other straps, kidney pad and aluminum frame? I just want everything to match. Thank you for this great video!

    If you use the Molle II gen IV plastic frame and the Molle shoulder straps and Kidney pads you will never use another pack. this goes for Med. and Lg. alice. Also cut a 13 gal. trash can to about 11" and put it inside the Large alice to keep pack firm. plenty of youtube vids on alice mods and wildcat mods.

    im having a huge problem with the straps. I got mine at a flea market and the straps that came with it were a different type than I think a regular one. Anyway it feels very uncomfortable and it feels better to have it the way where the straps/buttons are on the outside but the straps have to twist making me think its supposed to be the other more uncomfortable side. oh and your video just showed me that the button side should definitely be on the outside. I think im going to have to take off these straps which are very badly knotted to the whole frame and backpack. Well anyway thanks for the video.

    • @silenthunder85
      @silenthunder85  9 лет назад

      +Steven Perez the frame is the same size for either, and look for stampings-- genuine US mil equipment is (usually) labeled with a description of what it is and a National Stock Number or NSN-- but on older surplus it'll be hard to see because the ink will be faded.

    • @clint218705
      @clint218705 8 лет назад

      +Steven Perez I like the medium because you can use the radio pouch to keep the weight up high for training. I just use sand in a sandbag wrapped in duct or 100mph tape or tile or square landscaping rocks wrapped similarly. It is cheap and costs less than buying something else. The pouch is 10x11.5x5 I think.

    • @silenthunder85

      yeah i forgot to cover that in the vid.. it is just all-around useful. Can take the pack itself off the frame and mount the shelf on the frame to carry other things like large radio, ammo cans, 5 gallon gas/water can, etc. Would need straps or cordage obviously but yeah

    ОПА! Мой рюкзак!!
    I have one of these!
    Just a question can a guy that's 5'9" wear the medium one?
    I only have a large one and it barely fits!

    I use a medium ALICE without a frame, and the straps come apart at the slightest tug. I just looped some parachute cord through the D rings and tied them off well, and it works a lot better than the plastic clip design. Still, why am I having this problem?

    I have a noob question for you. I was wondering if a molle 2 shoulder straps could be used on an alice pack frame? Anyone have thoughts on that?

      i suppose; I've seen some pics of people doing it, but it looks weird & I don't think it would be much more comfortable (below is a pic someone did with ACU Molle straps). I prefer everything the way it's issued, for the most part, and only make minor modifications to gear-- other people go crazy with it. Google Image search is an awesome tool; with the right keywords it will bring up pics from all sorts of different websites & forums... so if you Google Image search "Alice ruck Molle shoulder straps" (or variations thereof) it'll come up with something, I'm sure. As far as the ALICE shoulder straps, there were 2 versions-- the ones in this vid are OD and the 1st version-- they later came out with Alice shoulder straps in Woodland camo that have a bit more padding and are a little comfier from what I hear.

      +clint stew I used molle 2 straps and the molle kidney pad. I also replaced the straps with quick release buckles
