BALANCE SHEET of a bank contains ASSETS and LIABILITIES.
LIABILITIES - SHARE CAPITAL, RESERVES , BORROWINGS FROM OTHER BANKS & RBI, DEPOSITS ( DEMAND & TERM DEPOSITS), OTHER LIABILITIES ( refinance from FI) , ACCEPTANCE, ENDORSEMENT & OTHER OBLIGATIONS.
ASSETS- CASH, BALANCE WITH RBI & OTHER BANKS, INVESTMENTS ( stocks , GSECS etc), LOANS & ADVANCES, FIXED ASSETS ( like FURNITURES, VEHICLES, BUILDINGS etc ), ACCEPTANCE, ENDORSEMENT & OTHER OBLIGATIONS ( loc, lou etc)
contra items - the items which appear on both ASSET and liabilities side of a balance sheet .

Sir, why would we record entry for bank guarantee or letter of credit in balance sheet..these are contingent liabilities which may or may not arise ?? Please clarify sir

It is liability of bank towards beneficiary, asset on account of customer ( applicant) obligation towards bank . As such it is recorded on both sides of balance sheet
