I kind of feel like most people attack Alicorn OCs. There’s a reason they are so popular though. Our mane character in the show became an alicorn, which basically stated that there could be more created. Flurryheart’s birth now means they can simply be born as an alicorn, even though she’s the first.
Saying not to create an alicorn OC and just the three main races is limiting creativity in my personal opinion. Instead, I’d like to see one on how to do an alicorn OC correctly.
Also with the newest upcoming clip of season 9, there’s big changes coming for alicorns.
People also seem to forget that your OC or sona can simply be a design and that's it?? You don't need a deep backstory or complex universe or reason for making them an Alicorn, just make them a design you like. Who cares if other people don't like your reasons? Your OC is for you, not them. Same thing for kinsonas and AU OCs of canon characters. So long as your OC doesn't look identical to a canon character it's fine tbh.

The fun juxtaposition of a pegasus that’s shy and afraid to fly, or an earth pony that somehow manages to hang out with rainbow dash in the sky is what makes the characters Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie interesting. I don’t think people should focus on what pony race suits their personality best but rather what interesting ideas you could make up for the different races. Or not. You could also just choose what you like. There’s more than one way to choose the “right” race for your oc.
Also remember that the pony world is very different than the human world. You could make OCs that have jobs that can’t possibly exist in real life, and then it might be quite important what race they are.
I personally don’t mind Alicorn Ocs. Or red and black ocs. None of them are going to be canon and gives people a chance to create their own stories and universes.
And I believe they can be good ocs if developed correctly.

This isn't a hate comment or anything, but there's something you should remember, no oc is actually "bad or "good, their all their own thing and if anyone went through the trouble to just make a design or even a name, they should be proud.
Especially for people that don't know anything about art.
I’m not very active but I hope the MLP fandom has gotten to the point where they just accept children will be “cringe” and want to make Mary Sues and OP ocs. It’s fun and harmless, especially in a world where people are making vile content, Alicorn ocs are so harmless

My MLP OC is a Draconquis named Hexy.
I struggled for many years to make a pony OC that fit me and nothing was sticking nothing, I drew was sticking out to me, so one day I decided that, I would have a character that reflected my own chaotic, goofy nature and who was a reference to my favorite character in the MLP; FIM universe Discord. Her design underwent a lot of changes and fixing and redesigning, until, I came up with the perfect design for her!
to this day I couldn't be happier that I did not choose a pony Oc.
the other reason I didn't choose a pony was because, I felt like my OC would have drownded in the sea of pony Ocs, I personally have nothing against Pony OCS.
I just didn't want one.
Also I'm not a very active member of the Brony/Pegasister community, still in the fantom but also at the same time outside of it i.e this means, I love watching the show, buying the merchandise and even some of my good friends are bronies/ pegasisters, I just don't go to Con's or meetups.
Like Discord he's not a pony but he interacts with them and has friendships with ponies.

tbh i hate when people police OCs. it really sucks the fun out of them, and makes it feel as if you need to follow specific strict guidelines. if someone wants to make a OP alicorn OC with rainbows hair, red eyes, and black fur... let them!! ocs are meant to be fun and goofy who tf cares.
Before becoming the vibrant, free-spirited, and colorful blue review horse she is today, the back in the day blue review horse was so saturated with the absence of pony reviews and color theory knowledge that she was constantly dull and grey.
My OC is named Midnight Chimes. He's kind of a palamino with owl-like wings and has a clock with a moon face for a cutie mark.

I think the best way to make a non-conventional OC work, such as an alicorn or other weird variants that are frowned upon, is to create a backstory with the intent of the TV show audience. Much of what KP said is true and you need to work around it. So, if you have a pony that is dark in terms of overall personality, it needs to fit within a mythology or theme that represents it as a new concept rather than dropping it in willy nilly. Also, do not be ashamed about dark colors because the royal guard have plenty of them as well as the history of Equestria being vague enough to squeeze extra stuff in it. Just make cool stuff that you think people would enjoy without scaring the little girls too much and you are solid.
Or just not care about Canon Adherence.

Joe Francis That was the point of my comment, numb nut. They aren't bad, but they are so out of left field, you need to justify their existence. If you just plop them in with no context, people are just going to assume the worst out of it. The main point of an OC is to connect yourself to the community with a representation of yourself. If you make yourself an outlier with no explanation, you are isolating yourself; therefore, making a "bad OC" that people are going to ignore. Best way to have a red and black OC is to have a good backstory and character design that people won't reject outright. It is fine to just create to create, but that is all it will be used for, to just exist. Showing it off to people won't have any good results.
@@maxord11 I don't think you have to make an OC that abides by canon or have complex / unique reasoning to have your OC be an Alicorn or not-yet-seen race / species. Make an OC that you like and is pleasing to look at that represents you. The opinions of others when it comes to OCs and especially alicorns isn't important if your OC represents you and makes you happy. This idea that every OC needs a deep backstory and reason that everyone agrees on for their race or cutie mark is so limiting and ridiculous.
I'v made a few OC's, but they were all done with the Pony Creator.

When I first made my oc back in a school, she had short hair, glasses, and a different cutie mark and feathered wings instead of demon ones. I was terrible at drawing back then, and wasn't super into the fandom. Over the years I discovered the Pony Generator and made my oc better from that. In fact, all my ocs started out with the generator. Eventually I gave my ocs different mane styles and tails. I finally made them my own instead of using what someone else made. I've been proud of myself up to this point and still am. I have gotten many compliments on my oc Haiku, despite her being a red and black alicorn oc. And it makes me happy not to get the whole Mary Sue comment that some other oc creators get. Well thats it for my ramble. Toodles!

my problem is not just about it looking "edgy" or "2cool4u", it's about the colors clashing and it _only_ being those two colors, without a color to balance it out.
like King FireStorms' oc. the yellow balances it out a bit, and is easier on the eyes (you don't have to strain yourself to look at it), as well as the red being on the face, so you can see his face better.
It's a general rule not to go pure black when choosing a color, you know.
but, that's my take on it, as well as other things I've picked up on.
@@lovelychime8964 Well my oc isn't pure black. She's more of a dark grey. If I had her be full black, I couldn't do any shadowing on her. So I had to lighten the color so everyone could see her facial expressions.

I recently made my first pony OC, and I'm pretty happy with her.
I've got experience with OC making and designing, honestly designing OCs is SUPER fun to me.
I love seeing what I can do to make my characters unique while also making sense for their species or universe.
My pony is an artistic coffee addict named Mochamint. She's an earth pony who enjoys drawing and over all vibing out. She's not a complex character, but she does bring me comfort.
Her over all scheme has a mint coloring to match her name, but I gave her pink eyes because I think blue and pink works well together and it helps add flare to her design so she's not so basic to look at lol

My original OC was a half-unicorn half changeling. It wore a ponified mask from BIONICLE(a Miru, to be more specific) and specialized in finding interdimensional rifts. I haven’t made another since, but I also am not sure how I feel about the old one, so I guess it’s just...there.

Alicorn ocs can be great and just bc you make one and ppl other then you have made loads doesn't mean it's bad like last time I checked other people's ocs shouldn't mean you can't make the oc you want
While my OC may not be an alicorn (though I claim her as a Pegasus by birth), she has a certain birth defect determining her breed based in a certain location for a certain occasion.
She has a similar color as Shadow the Hedgehog, but a lighter gray coat color. My OC personally is kind, but defensive when she needs to be.
I took a test for a pony race and it said i was a unicorn!😊
I have an OC that is deliberately terrible. He's a cursed Alicorn Prince (with batpony wings instead of pegasus) with a dark and mysterious past, a brooding, cynical view of the world, and of course, a heart of gold once you get to know him. It's because he's the creation of my actual pony OC, Magic Circle, who is playing a D&D game for the first time and has no idea what he is doing, so I came up with the most terrible cliche thing I could think of for him to make.

I'm making an OC that is a Nightmare (the demon horse from Mythology) unicorn Hybrid, but he is more of a tragic character , so I would like to now a good color combination of colors, I want to use darker colors, yes he is a Half-Pony hybrid, I would like your opinion.
Definitely use darker and more subtle colors. Dark blues and purples are good. White can make a good accent, but it's best to make it subtle. I'd say look at galaxy art for inspiration.

I think a good color scheme would be grey, blue, and black for his hair, with a dark purplish black for his body, and maybe green eyes
Definitely a navy blue base, this will help set you apart from all the black bases. Take care not to look too much like princess Luna as she's a fan favourite and you don't want people griping that your OC is a copycat specifically because she can sometimes be presented as tragic as well.

Instead of red and black, they could go with a darker red, such as crimson or blood, and a dark grey. It's helped my OC look better. His personality and backstory need work, though.
I have a Changling OC but I'm stuck on her reformed look. Her backstory is fairly simple, she was taken from the hive when she was a grub and experimented on. Was rescued and one of her rescuers adopted her. She would disguise herself as a black Unicorn with a blue green main and joined the royal guard. Was almost killed during the invasion of Canterlot so she hid herself during Teirk and the second Changling invasion.
honestly, my oc may look big and bold and too much but every bit of my oc's looks and story reflects my irl looks and story. sure it not exsactly my irl story and books but i let my imagination run wild. my oc is my profile pic. if you have any questions about her then throw them at me. i'm even going to try and hire voice actors and animators to really make the backstory of my oc good in my eyes and make the whole story a series so when somepony asks "hey, what's your oc's backstory?" i can send them the whole playlist of it that tells her backstory. and there will even be a bit at the end explaining her looks and what stuff from my life inspired bits and pieces of the story and character so she may not have color theory on her side, but she means a lot to me and every bit of her has a meaning.^^ even her dark side has a meaning.
I notice that some people use OC and -sona interchangeably, and I wish they wouldn't. Every -sona is an OC, but not every OC is a -sona.
That out of the way, my ponysona is a unicorn named Crepuscular Rays. He's from Canterlot, quite bookish but a bit more outdoorsy than me (he actually *likes* camping), with a specialization in spells that reduce presence. He's got a purple coat, blue mane and tail (along with a scruffy beard), and his cutie mark is a dotted outline of a pony.

My first unicorn OC was named Scholar Note; she always wrote many stories, dreamt about being a famous writer, and she was friends with Pinkie Pie.
The next one I made was my first alicorn OC named Eclipse. She was the daughter of Princess Luna who started and founded the new flying group of Equestria: The Shadowbolts.
My 3rd OC (and I use her now to define me on Internet) is named Princess Jinx Batstar. Princess Jinx Batstar is actually a baticorn (a hybrid between a vampire and a alicorn), her parents are Princess Luna and Count Dracula (Yes the one from Hotel Transylvania). Jinx is very different from what you expect; for example, she can come out in the day without protection but only when it's partly sunny, cloudy, partly cloudy, snow, and rainy, just not when it's clear, because she'll burn and have to put on two bottles of sunblock to protect herself. Second, she can't eat huge portions of garlic (only tiny or small portions) because her throat will swell and her neck will itch. Third, Jinx can only turn into a bat like her dad and half-sister Mavis by having to flying up and touching the ceiling.
I made more OCs to be related to mine but I only brought back Eclipse to the family.
A lot of my character's visual design was unintentional, but it kinda ended up falling into place, if that makes sense. Really, his palette consists of four colors: black(hair, trench coat, pants, shoes), white(shirt under open trench coat), cream(skin), and moderately saturated blue(irises).
This palette actually represents him quite nicely. At least to me, I think you could get to know Thoren a little bit with a simple glance. A black exterior with a white interior for his endless struggles with his own balance, and the touch of blue to both literally and figuratively add some color to him. I've read that blue can be interpreted as a visual form of purity, and I took that literally! A portion of Thoren's character is the expression of pure, raw, unadulterated emotion--positive or otherwise. Quite often, this shows as pure rage! This accompanies a refusal to lie, to only say what he means, a strict code of honor, and unbreaking will to protect people; regardless of what people may think of him.
It ended up creating something visually simple but thematically complex. I've had Thoren for a long time, so he's been around in my headspace for a while. Admittedly, not everyone enjoys him, but I've come to realize that he fulfills a particular region in entertainment. He's definitely not for everyone, but I'm proud of him, of how much he's grown, and what he means to both myself and those who decided to take him up for an appearance.

Shouldn't it be up to people. To decide how they want to write their books? Yet people still study story structure and classic literature tropes, to help them design a story others will enjoy. Same concept applies here. If you want to just screw around, know yourself out. If you want to be taken seriously... maybe listen to what those who have come before have to say.

When I made my OC, I didn't look at any of these videos. Now I'm watching them to get *ideas* on how to improve it. It is up to you to decide on how you want your OC to be, but videos like this one are ideas on how to make a better OC when the time comes or to improve existing ones so they don't turn out looking like a 4 year old's art project instead of something good.

I have a purple and blue oc which is a pegasus.
She is the forgotten sister of Celestia and luna. She is technically the princess of the stars but because she wasn't born with a horn she found another way to raise the stars, which is creating enough friction with her wings and that is how she rases the stars. She is the youngest and she got corrupted that's why her eyes are black.
She got forgotten because, when she got corrupted the 2 sisters had to use the elements of harmony on her but she disappeared, what happened was he got teleported into a forest, and he hasn't found her way out but she has found people in the forest before and managed to use some of her corrupted power for good by teleport them out.
If you have any advice on how I could make this better please tell me.

But what about other creatures like a changeling or griffin oc?
Or even a Draconequus oc?(We know Discord is the only draconequus shown, but why have a species name if he's the only one? The world is a large place outside of Equestria and we know Discord can go to his own little dimension)
What would you suggest for those kinds of ocs since they don't really relate to some things about pony ocs.
My pony oc from the 3rd grade is a unicorn with invisible wings, eyes that are the same 4 colors as her hair (highlighter green, highlighter orange, highlighter pink and purple) and her skin is dark magenta? I think thats the color- its basicly the same skin color as that one teacher pony but i bit darker- that oc also has red glasses and her cutiemark used to be just stripes of her hair colors but now its a pallete with colors- i really need to redesign her 😭
Tip for a alicorn ocs you wanna change YOU CAN have horns- like- change from a like unicorn horn- TO LIKE ANTLERS OR OTHER ANIMAL HORNS like bull horns or ram horns! It still involves some sort of "alicorn" type pony/ character that isn't crazily like this magic flying horse, and actually give it a more likeable notation, for example I have this old brown and tan oc (I have a few brown mlp ocs) I haven't redesgined, she was an ALICORN because i liked the idea of magic but pegasi were always more of a favorite to me, I can take the alicorn/ unicorn horn from that oc and change it for maybe some antlers to go for the deer like pegasi especially with the colors seeming great for that idea (I have a redesign of fluttershy that makes her more of a winged deer since its more like her character, very sweet and shy), OR maybe some TUSKS, your oc doesn't specifically have to have the horn of a unicorn if it's an alicorn, it also makes it more likeable in the character since alicorns are usually unfavored by very well known artists. You could also chose different WINGS like how they have the bat ponies.

in 2017 ( i think) i made a mlp oc that was an emo alicorn with rainbow in its tail and horn. the redisighn is mush better now, a simple grey pegesus with a black mane that has one or two purpel streiks through it.
I was planning on making a shamanic oc once that could use magic by using instruments partially made out of using animals or magical being but it would mostly simple elemental stuff but the oc would be a earth pony and bla bla bla did that sound original or did it sound boring ?
well, my oc is a changeling, who has made his own pony form, usually he sticks to just being a pegasus, but sometimes he has some fun with making himself a fake alicorn out of boredom.

My mlp OC is a gryphon, his main colors are light grey and darker grey. His headfeathers are a dark red that transition into a lighter red as the feather progresses. His talons are a light grey, was thinking of metal when making the color. So, not red and black, more grey and *some* red.
I don’t have an official mlp oc but for my usual main oc I uses colors like gray as a main color as it’s my favorite color then some type of red and purple cause purple is my second favorite color and I though red looked good with purple, is that good ? Or no
Hey so I had a question for KP-senpai, it has to do with my Earth Pony OC "Comedic Timing".
What shade of blue do you think would be best for a pony OC who has some scars? (And no I don't mean in an edgy way.) I feel that scars are important things that are generally not touched on enough. Also, what shade of grey would you recommend for the mane?

hey uh, its not really cool to use other peoples ocs as examples as "bad characters" regardless if you don't like them or not. ESPECIALLY with no credit to the original artist. if you want to show a bad oc, just make one yourself for an example. its extremely rude to hate on other peoples characters because chances are that oc is important to them! i don't care if its a 'gross and cringy black and rainbow weed pony' or whatever you may have thought, its just not cool and very disrespectful.

My OC is a Pegasus named inco. She was abandoned as a baby and raised in kluge town so she didn’t really know what pony society was when she was reintroduced to it
My oc was a Pegasus who got cursed by a jealous unicorn and was turned into a Reformed Changeling (which wasn't the Unicorn's intent, as they were aiming to turn him into a beetle).
So my pony sona is a unicorn named Willow Roots, they were monochromatic green, but now I think I've settled on their coat being more yellow and their mane staying green. Their cutie mark is a willow tree with exposed roots. Their coltfriend is a monochromatic purple Pegasus named Crows Hope with a crow over a white shield as his cutie mark
Any appearance is acceptable with the right lore and backstory
My oc is someone named Cherry Fondant she is ashamed of being an earth pony because she is the only student who doesn’t have magic and the ponies would eventually bully her so she decided to pretend to be a unicorn so everypony won’t bully her and btw she tries to find some sort of magic ( spell idk what) to make then believe that she is a unicorn but she doesnt use magic often (still dont know how she has the name Cherry Fondant or how she got her cutie mark im still gonna think about it)

For my ponysona she's an Earth pony, not much for physical stuff, maybe cuz I feel in touch with nature?) But either way I can only see myself as an Earth pony, however if I had a power I could choose from (besides shapeshifting) I'd choose to have massive wings! A couple weeks ago someone gave me the idea to have prosthetic/fake wings which I'd have to look into the lore to find out how flying works to see if I could do that to my oc. I also have a few alicorns cuz I don't wanna have my world with my ocs in the world of the show.
Honestly, I just make my alicorns because I prefer the body type (I dont use them for anything, I just like drawing the body type more)

The first mlp Oc I made was a white Pegasus with a yellow mane (suprise ish yellow) named lightning line who has been through changes, me and my friend played mlp in a future setting (this was like around 2011-2014 when I was a kid)
I recently started working on her again and renamed her Shooting Star with a lightning cutie mark with a star on top. :) I remember she had blue magical ballerina style shoes that let her walk/run in the air for when she got tired (flying)
My mlp oc is a blue Pegasus with yellow eyes with lighter blue markings and my other is is a normal pony with an axalotl tail and gills that I made quite a while ago
I have a shadow pony oc, I will warn you his story gets darker in his sheet, he also suffers from memory loss and can’t comprehend himself or other’s emotions due to dying, by him being a shadow pony I mean instead of like king sombra or something, no, just a sentient shadow with a cutiemark, nothing too special he is just a alicorn who doesn’t have royal status because he doesn’t want to he was just born from a Pegasus and a unicorn and died, he mostly just helps children at night to find their parents, however he doesn’t understand tones or emotions(Alexithymia) but he still tries to help as best he can even tho he is just a shadow of the pony he used to be (he died of reasons he can’t remember/got lost to time because I lost the information from when I was nine-) that’s him oversimplified
My oc is a changling who is blending in (trying to) with pony society and goes under the alias ink
My oc is a unicorn because she can do many things in the same time, she like to draw and do magic, she's friend with Princess Flurry who also the one help her get her cutimark, her sister takeing care of fouls without a family and also have a dragon friend names Layla (Spike sister)

My OC technically started out as a my little pony oc, so I'll base off that.
My OC's name is Song Write, mainly due to the fact I love writing, and I love doing stuff with songs, such as putting them in scripts, or adding them into rps.
My OC's species is a half changeling, half unicorn with a disability that her horn goes off now and again, and that her changing into another thing doesn't always work. Her colour scheme is just light blue and white.
I chose changeling to show that my personality can change constantly, and to show that I'm not perfect. Besides, everyone has holes in everything they do (if you know what I mean).
Her hobbies, of course is writing, however occasionally she likes to draw and play video games. Mainly with her special somepony.

My Oc is an earth pony with brown hair and is kinda light yellow-ish she where's a cloak to hide the fact she doesn't have a cutie mark even though she is well past the age cute marks are normally gotten (but is still a philly) she goes to like Twilight's school
My OCs colour and mane is based entirely of my old channel's avatar. So he just has a skin coloured coat and a messy brown mane. Nevermind the blood in his eyes. That's just for the Halloween season.

My oc is a Pegasus who is red,orange and black with yellow eyes. So the colour of fire, and she is a artist so her colour respondent's the fire you get in your soul while feeling inspired. her name is soulfire, the black and orange is the colour of her name and tail, her cutie Mark is three pencils pink, blue and white.
Oh boy. I have a lot of pony ocs in all honesty and I try to think carefully about how I want them to be designed and such. In all honesty sometimes I go on roblox and play one of the my little pony games and I get kinda scared by all the oversaturated colors but then I have to remind myself that really desaturated colors aren't the best and isn't color theory just the best? Anyway I remember when I tried to make my online persona (catsona?) into a pony and it didn't work too well since I felt she didn't fit into the universe (I don't use her to roleplay as I feel she doesn't fit into fandoms too well) and so I gave up on making her into an mlp character but for some reason I find it hard to make a ponysona for myself since there's so many choices to choose from when you're making a character. I haven't tried in awhile so maybe I'll give it another go.
i made an earth pony OC with a dark pink almost maroon body and a lighter shade of pink for the mane and tail, with blue eyes. her cutie mark is a bearpaw with a heart in it (yes she is a vet even for wild animals..)... unfortunately for her i made her an example for my infection Au.. i do love her tho.😅
but ive been thinking about making a bat pony that has both wings and a horm but their wings dont work so they just say their a weird unicorn bat pony and hide their wings under a cloak.

My OC is named Butterscotch Pop. She's a yellow and orange pony with magenta eyes, a butterscotch cutie mark, and frizzy hair. She's a Pegasus, but prefers walking to flying as her wings are a bit large for her body, and she's clumsy. Her mane and tail are dark brown with orange strips. She's quiet, because almost everything she says is a solid roast, even when she doesn't mean to. Butterscotch Pop still manages to have friends though lol

I only have one MLP OC. She's based off my main OC I have, since Dr. Spiral is a vampire queen I made her MLP version an Alicorn but not huge, just a regular size Alicorn like Twilight was when she was introduced. Granted I don't use her much but thought it'd be a cute idea to draw my main OC as a Alicorn ^^

She doesn't really use her wings she grew up with earth ponys so she can't fly, tbh i think she thinks she's an earth pony...her flower cutie mark shows her talent in gardening and taking care of nature, that's really all to her.

So her name is Feather Dust. She is gray with small hints of blue and purple. Though just beacause she is a alicorn dosent mean shes a princess. Her parents abondend her due to not having enough money and wanting a normal pony. Noe she lives alone. She is intelegent but a shy wreck. Once she tried self harm and started biteing and cutting her wings so then she is a normal unicorn. Though it never worked and her wings had a feathering and decaying away look.
