I've been debating keeping this camera with Canon taking away the oversampled 4k60 last minute. Just not cool to put it in the press release and on the website and then remove that feature last minute. the camera obviously can do it. But you made a good point, is it worth triple the file size? I looked at it on a 27 inch 5k display at full brightness and could hardly tell a difference tbh.
Great video John! Love the use of the waveforms. It would be nice if Canon included video exposure tools in the photography side of their cameras. Waveforms and False Colors are valuable exposure tools.
Thanks for that! It also looks like Canon tweaked their profiles and dialed down the magenta in the skintones quite a lot. I think I prefer the original R5 look here but maybe the new neutral approach is easier to work with when post work is on the heavy side. I also use C1 and the difference there will probably be minimal though since they make their own profiles
Thank you! I hope it was helpful. For what it’s worth I know that Lightroom makes their own Camera standard profiles and they don’t get those from Canon so comparing them in DPP right now is the most reliable tool we have.
i was borderline obsessed with why i never loved the images from my R5 and the magenta cast along with unwelcome/difficult to correct reds in the brown tones was always a big reason. The new camera really speaks to me as a fan of the 5D3 with the way it handles color, contrast, texture, and highlight rolloff. Very excited for mine to arrive next week.
Thanks for the info. I look forward to watching more tests and your take the sharpness/clarity between the mkI & mkII sensor. Some are claiming there is a very discernible difference, others disagree.
@@JohnGressYes. The idea is the R5II is sharper (as in Jared Polins recent vid). The assumption being passed around is because the way the new BSI sensor handles anti-aliasing and moire better. As such, the AA filter is either not as strong as was previously, or not there all together. Ergo sharper images than the mkI. Similar to the difference between the old 5Ds and 5Dsr, where the sr did not have the AA filter over the sensor. It produced sharper in the small details. Edit to add: in JP's video, it was only on a pixel peeping level, but there are those claiming its life changing. heh heh.
Well I hope he showed it in an apples to apples comparison. I can see on the test charts here that the new camera is slightly sharper but not in a way that would move anyone. www.dpreview.com/articles/2189397463/canon-eos-r5-ii-added-to-studio-scene
Good evening John have you been able to shoot the eos r5 ii in hss with your flash? I tried today but it would only go to 1/250th ive never ran into that problem with the r5 mark 1. Hope you can help..
I have. I was able to use it in TTL and HSS at 1/2000 and 1/8000, in Mechanical, FCE and ES (although it was odd only hearing the sound of the flash discharging
I’m fairly new to photography, so I’m using an old 80D (that I absolutely love), but this is my Dream Upgrade Camera. I’ve never even used a mirrorless or even a full frame camera before. I’m hoping next year the MK1 on the used market may be affordable.

Haha keeping it real by calling out the RBF when doing the video test 😅 👍 the R5ii is out of my price range, but watching it anyway just in case I win the lottery! Video from R5ii and all the talk about less dynamic range seems more academic than real (as you say, might only matter if you really mess something up and have to recover) hope you enjoy the new camera!
Thanks! Academic is a great way to put it. I’m surprised I didn’t redo the test with a better face! Wait til you see my full revie and best of luck with the lotto!
Hi John, Great Videos as always. It looks like you were able to use the Skyport Pro without an adapter on the new hotshoe. Do you know if TTL works with the R5 Mark II / Elinchrom Skyport Pro?
Thanks! I didn’t try ttl or hss. But boy I should have! I was unable to use the first curtain electronic or the electronic shutter with the mk2 but I never used it with the mk1 so I need to test that more.
Nice video, did you use the same lens at 9:00 part of the video where you are comparing the c70 to r5mk2? Cause when I did compare mine the exposure was much closer than yours. the difference was 1/4 of a stop maybe.

C70 has a more organic look to it. The highlight and shadow rolloff is better. You can drop the mid detail a bit in post to make them match better if you ever do. I found the C70 had a richer looking image compared to my R5C. The C70 always seemed to be a bit warmer and pushed more towards green at the same settings. Most DP's dont like magenta haha. I am glad to see that the R5II in my testing is less red all over in weird areas than the original.
One thing I which caught my eyes and is really obvious with the new R5 II and also the Nikon Z6 III is that the IR Cut filter is working significantly better ... or cuts away more IR pollution. The red/magenta in black fabrics and shadows does more pollution than in both these new cameras. This is really welcoming for fashion stuff, with some expensive special garments from my fashion photo experience. From my own experience, the top Elinchrom lights have better IR cutted flash tubes than the much more expensive battery powered profoto lights. And yes, this is special stuff no one on RUclips notices. Also softboxes and their fabrics are impacting this alot. The Elinchrom ones are really good at this... but the stuff also ages and changes colors, for some color critical stuff this can become really pedantic.
Thanks for sharing I’ll look out for this in future tests. Its a good thing that we have led modeling lamps now because out fabric is going to last a lot longer.
@@JohnGress absolutly true, but you might also miss the super bright modelling lights we had ages ago with 400W or 650W tungsten. Something as bright with LED would be so nice ... using a modelling light with daylight. XD
Thanks for video and very good insight. The comparison to C70 was surprising, R52 looks cleaner but C70 looks a tad more open. Small difference. The small diffrence between R5 Mk1 and Mk2 is so small it doesn't matter. Fantastic camera the new R52 but they all are really good! Great work : )
