My main issue with the ROG Ally is that it's NOT a mobile device in the sense that you can carry it with you like a Gameboy and get 3+ hours out of it. It's a "play it close to a plug" device - 18W is the best performance per watt by fair but if you go to say 10W, your device will barely use less power yet drop massively in performance. It doesn't scale anywhere near as well as the Steam Deck meaning you can't play low power games for hours on end. Even at the absolute lowest setting you will only get 2 hours out of it.

@@nomaschalupas2453 That's a bad analogy. The device was marketed as having multiple power modes - only one power mode makes sense. That's like buying a sports car and only being able to drive in 3rd gear.

    • @killzekat
      @killzekat Год назад +1

Actually, you can...It's pretty well knowned that the Ally tends to overspend, and there is two solutions for that :
      - create a manual setting for the game you want to play.
      - you use x86 tuning utility.
The Deck is still the best at low TDP as it's good at squeezing performances out of low power profiles but the Ally is no slouch at all anymore.
And at the same time, playing recent demanding games at 720p60fps from medium to ultra settings is a thing on the Ally while the Deck struggles to handle 720p40fps at low/mid settings even at 15 watts tdp(Control, Cyberpunk, Re4 Remake, SF6 World Tour, etc.)

You got a extra 20 mins over me, so what? We have plugs everywhere available to us. Every store or place you travel will have outlets for charging nowadays.
Also my analogy was perfect. Your reply was perfect too, similar to the camry guys replies at carshows.
Also that extra 20 mins you have, I can recharge past 50% already while you gotta wait a few hours or stay plugged.

Haven't bought the ROG Ally yet because:
    1. Spending $700+ plus on a game console means reading as many reviews as possible.
    2. As much as I love the possibility of playing titles from GTA IV to Forspoken in my hands, I'm hearing that the Ally doesn't do everything the best.
    3. I'm reading about ASUS releasing an update to prevent "SD card frying". Imagine, spending $60 for a 1TB SD card to find that it no longer works or possibly melts inside the ROG Ally SD card slot due to heat?
I also would like the ROG Ally to at least come in black.

I put the Ally in my tomtoc bag while putting it to sleep and pulled the Ally out a few minutes later to see my SD card had popped out. It was one of the hottest days of the year so far, but the machine itself didn't seem to have overheated, nor did I have any issues with the SD card, but it's possible that it was because my 1TB SD card is reserved purely for emulation and loading up a 128kb rom isn't likely to stress out an SD card like running a large game from Steam will. I've been using the card with a dock afterwards with no issues yet.

I kept turning it on and off them i decide to do a factory reset and start again and the Ally worked great but I was thinking that if I only had this thing for 10 days and i already had to do a factory rest on it how many times I would have to go through this while I own this product.

Im wondering if the SD card failure is possibly user error. I mean this in coming from the steam deck, you can pop them in and out alot easier. I have had it often where I go to eject my sd cards and they are still writing. If people are ripping their cards out without ejecting (because thats basically how you can do it on the deck) then that could cause the corruption people are seeing. Just a theory not a fact. Overall, as someone who opted to not change from the Deck to the Ally, I do feel the product was rushed to market. They saw the market open up thanks to Deck, and wanted to leap in. And if they’d spent more time with R&D, with a test sample, etc… this wouldn’t be happening. So for this generation specifically, the Deck is currently the safer option.
And as for comparisons of product, I feel the discussion of similarity between 15W modes speaks volumes, and that using 25W makes the battery option surely obsolete and becomes a plugged in laptop of sorts.

Just finished filling out a 1tb card over the weekend and it stopped working, of course. Here's an interesting data point on that, though:
This is a brand new, high end, 1tb Sandisk card. Just copied files to it and read from it occasionally, so not ran hard at all. The ally SD card reader will not see it's contents AT ALL, but will read other cards just fine. Also, if I put the cooked card in another laptop, it will see the contents as if it's fine, BUT, if I try to copy large amounts of data the SD card is definitely broken. It will copy some data, then slow down to 0kbs for a while, then copy a little more, then eventually the copy will fail. Once it fails, it will continue to fail after a few seconds of data copying over and over until I give it a long break.
This is a card that worked fine for like 2 weeks, and all it's done is sit in the ally it's entire life.

Asus has a bad habit of defaulting processors in their devices to aggressive boost, which keeps it up in those temps frequently, even idle sometimes. "Filterless" on youtube has a video about how to disable this. You will go from 3.8ghz to more like 3.3ghz ceiling on your cpu but it actually just frees up a bit more performance for the GPU side of things. Russ, if Nintendo went so far to include the Switch cartridge slot in the new console why wouldn't they just include backwards compatibility with physical games? Why go so far only to stop right before the finish line? Seems like a really odd thing to do. Also, just including backwards compatibility for _all_ Switch games would be the vastly superior pro-consumer move.
The way I see it, Nintendo will likely do with their next console what they did with the Wii and DS. Include compatibility with their previous gen console but strip it away in future iterations. For instance the original Wii had GameCube compatibility and the DS had Gameboy compatibility.

Absolutely. Nintendo bent over backwards for compatibility across multiple generations, going as far as adding additional cartridge slots and even additional SoCs with prior gen processors like they did on the DS for GB/GBA and Wii U for Wii.
Nintendo staying on ARM would be even less of an issue than what happened with DS to 3DS since that had to boot into a compatibility mode, and even that managed it with compatible cartridge slots. With a next-gen Switch it would be more comparable to how it works on PCs, x86 consoles, or ARM based phones/tablets.
Whoever on the podcast said that the next-gen Switch would have to add additional hardware for Switch compatibility is genuinely ignorant. How does he think compatibility works on x86 PCs/consoles or iPhones? All the next console would need is a pin compatible cartridge slot like the 3DS had and the ARM foundation would take care of the rest.

"There is no logical reason to believe that Nintendo will have backwards compatibility".
What is this based on? There is no logic in this argument. Most Nintendo systems have gone out of their way to have BC, going so far as to add additional cartridge slots or additional chips for hardware emulation (DS had a GBA/GB chip as well as cartridge slot, the Wii U had a dedicated Wii chip, etc). The 3DS used higher capacity cartridges but the slot was still compatible with DS games.
The reason why the Switch didn't have BC is because it moved from PowerPC to ARM while the media went from optical discs to solid state. Wii U to Switch was a bigger compatibility break than the move from the PS3 to PS4. Its really obvious that Nintendo would maintain BC now that an ARM processor with solid state storage is the platform, just like x86 is the norm for Xbox and Playstation.
"They would probably need another Android chip in there for emulation"
Is this how you believe iPhones and Android phones work with newer chips? Do you believe this is how it works with x86?
Really? I thought this was supposed to be a tech channel.

Asus stepped up to the plate tried to hit a homerun but instead gave us a foul ball. Yes. fsr upscale the image from a lower resolution. It often looks better to use dlss and fsr than simply upscaling the image. The setting from performance to quality demands how much the image is being upscaled. With fsr and dlss you are not running a game at full resolution of 1080p.
When you running a game or movie at a different resolution than the native resolution of the display the image becomes "muddy" looking. fsr and dlss purpose is to bring back into the image some sharpness.

I know it's easy to dunk on the rog ally at this point, it just came out and it's going to have issues. I wasn't actively watching the launch of the Steam Deck and didn't really consider getting one until I learned enough about it to know it would fit most of my wants and needs for gaming, so I'm not really aware of any of the day one launch issues it might have had.
That said, it seems like they didn't consider possible hardware issues like overheating with the ally, there's also the issue that except for one or two past exceptions (maybe?) windows comes as is with every install, meaning it's not built for a handheld. windows is a notorious resource hog, which is often why you need to max out hardware just to run games properly. So even if asus takes the issues seriously, I doubt microsoft will do anything to optimize win 11 for it. And unlike Valve, neither asus or microsoft have long term consideration for gaming in mind. The xbox ceo basically stated as much with the xbox 🤣
This just seems like an attempted cash grab by both companies, and I doubt the longevity of the rog ally. Before I got my Steam Deck, I was looking to see if there were any good handheld options for what I wanted, finding a youtube channel were someone reviews such units. They ultimately said that if they had to choose just one of all the handhelds they had used all year, the Steam Deck was it. They have reviewed the ally also and given their praises for it, but it still does not sound like a long-term viable option, given microsoft's and asus's histories.

I did the same test medium cyberpunk 1080p etc nothing else running no special settings changed, on turbo, my test showed 41fps 3 times, i'm either lucky as hell or you guys are unlucky on your rigs.

I’ve had mine for about a week and am about to return it unless I discover some magic fix or setting that Will fix the Bluetooth issue. I can’t get it to pair with Xbox controllers. Tried 3 it paired with one, but the controller won’t work with all, except one, games. I spent 4 hours yesterday futzing with this thing and am beyond frustrated/disappointed.
