- Hi guys,
My first DIY for the "Me-made Summer Challenge" is this Smocked tiered maxi dress. It's such a beautiful dress and perfect for a summer wondering around.
To make this dress, you can check out my basic information below:
Sewing machine: Merrit Joyful Sewing
Material: 3m of loose linen with floral printing
My body size: 82-64-92 (I usually wear Small size)
My high: 165cm
This dress can fit your body easily by the shirring at the top. So you don't need to worry about the measurements. And the shirring is not as difficult as you think. Just follow to my instructions, I promise you can do it and it'll turn out great.
I create this challenge to spread my love at sewing to everyone and bring the fresh feeling to our summer in this special year. So I hope you love this idea and join me in this challenge.

Some feedback from me, who has actually made this:
- First of all, Jess, thank you so much. This was my first maxi dress and first time smocking/shirring and I’m so pleased with the result! I am about 184 cm tall and made it floor length, but 3M of fabric was still enough. I used a lightweight cotton instead of linen bc linen was too expensive, and it still turned out great. The shirring part was indeed not that hard but defo time consuming. It took me two rolls of elastic thread so make sure you have enough. I thought drawing the lines first was too much work haha, so I just used my presser foot to see more or less how much space I should leave between each line and the line before it. Worked totally fine, and the shirring is very forgiving, you won’t see little mistakes. For the straps: really see where you want them when you try the dress on, I put my back straps way to far to the side bc I didn’t. Pattern overall worked great and the shoulder straps (which I thought were quite long) worked perfect. Make sure to cut all your pattern pieces on the fold like Jenn does. Good luck and thanks again!
O yeah and make sure to try the shirring on a scrap piece first! :)
Wow, thank you for a very detail feedback. It would help others a lot
I plan to do it in the next weeks, i read this and I thank you. I tried shirring before but i think I got the wrong type of elastic and the dimension reduced more than 2 times, i was unlucky even if I did test before.
how long did it take you to do it?
I'm about to try make this dress. I'm 5'10 and roughly size 14 top 12 bottom but long bodied. How long would you make the top part? Also do you still think 3 metres is enough for me please? I love the shirred floaty look. Thank you 😊
I just found your account 1week ago and it ended up with 10m of new fabric and 3 new dresses :) I love your videos, they are explained perferctly, even for me as a beginner :)

You are a freaking angel. I’m just starting to get into sewing and your tutorials are absolutely perfect and the clothes so cute 🤗 thank you!!
Thank you so much!!
I love the "precise/comprehensible" measurement instructions!: 'measure the top rectangle, X = 1.5 xs Bust Measurement!"
That's 'Univeral Math/Algebra!"
Thank you! I *will* be making/sewing this dress!
Glad it was helpful!
What a fantastic tutorial! Thank you 😊
You are so welcome!
The overclocking of fabric is such a good idea for the first time i did it before sewing and it is amazing ❤😊
So glad you made it
Thank you so much for this video and all your DIY videos, your designs are amazing and your instructions so clear, it make it so easy! Can't wait for your next tutorials! 💕😃
Thank you so much!
Followed this tutorial for my first handmade dress and it came out wonderfully! The only thing I would change is to sew the top to the skirt portion before shirring because I struggled with stretching the top part to match the skirt. That might just be because I'm new to sewing though.
When making the frill for the skirt tiers, mark the skirt tiers in eighths, and after making the frill match up those markings! It helps to ensure the frills are even around.
I had a similar dress back in the 70's. I loved it! Oh yes, I'm going to use this tutorial to make me one for this summer. Thank you so much!
Wonderful!
How many yard do i need if my size is medium ??
All of your projects are amazing! Thank you! I am so inspired, and I'm gonna try several of your projects. I can't thank you enough for these informative and clear videos!!

Beautiful! I'm going to patchwork all my scraps together and give this a try. Thanks!
Wonderful!
That's kind of my plan. I've a double sided patchwork quilt cover one side is plain. Will cut into panels. Although it's just cotton not linen. Linen is expensive in the UK. I hope mine turns out. How dis yours work?

Me scrolling through the comments to see if anyone put the instructions in words.
PS. Thanks so much for this tutorial! I'm really looking into trying it! I really want to get into the fashion industry when I'm older. (I'm 12. ) so i think its time for me to learn. One like=1 hour of practice
It's great to know what you want to do and try to learn it. I believe you can do it when you get older. Start with the small thing firs. But do it with lot of time to make it perfectly in the way you think the best. Then you'll get the skill you need for the future :)

Such a beautiful dress 😍. Just can't decide which top I would like with that lovely bottom, the one you made, or different one. A shirt-like button-up look maybe 🤔 or a wrapped one? Beautiful fabric, can't believe it is not cotton but linen, what a catch 🤩!
Thank you! 😊

Thank you so much!!
I’ll be making this dress in many different colours for summer 🥰
Yeah, go for it
Thank you for this video! 💖 I’ve made this dress yesterday, and I’m so happy with the result! I decided to make it with a stiffer cotton fabric, because I wanted a dress with a bit more ‘drama’.
It was a bit difficult using the cotton, but it worked out in the end! Thank you again for these clear directions ☺️
Wonderful! I'm so glad to hear that
This will be my next project 😍 time to go fabric shopping
Go for it!
Hi.Im new in sewing. Can you please show to your next video on how to get the measurement?i just love your tutorials ;-)
I've tried to put the explanation in the steps I did my measurement. So you can understand and adjust it to your body
Thank you for the video Jess. I love the dress and the fabric. Where did you get the fabric?
I bought it at the local market in my city
This is so beautiful! I will definitely try making this dress. Just hoping to find as pretty fabric as you did!
You can do it!
You make every step look so simple, I can wait to try to do it ❤️
Please do! And join my "Me-made summer challenge" too
Love your channel! Thank you for an amazing tutorial ❤️
You are so welcome!
This is an adorable dress!! I love the straps!
Thank you! 😊
So beautiful! You make it look so simple....
Thank you! 😊
Hey Jess, awesome work as usual! Is it possible to make the top without the elastic thread?do you have any suggestions please? On another way to make top?
Thank you a looot, I'm definitely going to make this one and show you 😁
Yes, you can make the top without the thread. But you will need to install the zipper and do more measurement for the top if you want it to fit your body. If you don't mind a bit loose at the top, you just need to do a little measurement for the bust
Great tutorial and beautiful dress!
Thank you! 😊
I would totally buy this dress!! omg love it so much :')
Yay, thank you!
Beautiful! Thanks for such good video 💙 well explained
Glad you liked it!
Hello Jess, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial ! It was rather easy to follow and the dress is so pretty 🥰 my mom was so impressed hahaha. I can’t wait to sew something else thanks to your videos 💞
You are so welcome!
Dear Jess, thanks for the video. It is so clear in your description. I am stitching a 2 tier dress using your measurements. What is the proportion for the second tier?
The second tier is 1.5 times the first tier
What brand of shirting elastic do you use? So excited to try this!
I just bought it at the market here and it has no brand on it
why would you dislike this?....just why? really, i'm trying to understand. People
envy
Probably someone that doesn't like to sew,I'm guessing
I know how to sew and I have a great sewing machine I already did a few garments but " I DON'T KNOW HOW TO CUT THE FABRICS. Can you please show me how ? By the way you have a good taste for choosing your projects and the way you present it, I love your channel.!!!!
Thank you so much
Absolutely gorgeous dress, a great tutorial.
Thanks so much 😊
