Making Wax Slugs

- Опубликовано: 4 апр 2012
- I want to do some ballistics testing on the wax slug, so I had to make some...thought I'd take you along. I want to thank Taofledermaus and Iraqveteran8888 for the ideas on how to make these shells.
Steps:
1)Cut the crimp off the top of the shell
2)Dump out the shot
3)For Federal Shells trim back the wad...this makes for a longer more stable slug
4)Replace the wad and shot cup
5)Scoop in a small amount of wax into the shot cup and allow to dry before adding the rest of the shot and wax.
6)Top off with a little extra wax
7)Allow cooling and clean off the outside of the shell
8) Enjoy...
NOTICE: I filled the bottom of the shot cup up with a bit of wax only before I added both the shot and wax to make the slug heavy in the front...none of these were loaded with more then an ounce of lead. I tried to spread it evenly. There shouldn't be any problems with over pressure on these. DO NOT use more lead then the shell was originally loaded with. Doing so could cause over pressure.
Make these at your own risk...I'm not responsible for your use of this information...

One thing that I didn't see you do it to sand the extra wax and shot off the end of the shell when you were done. You should do this so you don't get an accidental discharge of a round in a tube magazine. Keep doing what you're doing and stay safe!
I am glad there was an adult to help you with hot stove. :)
Live shells on a stovetop - *Brilliant*
Ive tried this. Be careful not to shoot these often out of rifled barrels. Without out cleaning they really fill up the rifling. Then they are a pain to clean when they are dry. They work awesome out of smooth bore barrels though.
Nice video. I usually use candle wax and separate each shot load as to make sure at least the load is balanced. I also throw the load in AFTER the waxing. Get yourself some metal shot glasses, put them in a skillet and put each shot load in there and then throw some wax in. You might notice a difference when shooting.
I'm going to do this with my kids crayons if they keep leaving them all over the place. Thanks great video.
Chocolate Slugs! Just in Time for Easter! Cool Vid!
I put down newspaper next to my frying pan when I make these. I also have a special pan full of wax I use over and over so I save money and don't have to worry about cleanup.
If you do this again, use a paper cup double boiler in the microwave. It's fast and you can pour the shot into the melted wax, mix, pour back into shells and just toss the cups. Make sure they are a good quality though.
I would love to see a 410 wax slug test out of a judge, thumbs up !!!
Technicolor wax slugs of death....i like it.
Yeah, to make the slug a little longer...and hopefully make it a bit more stable.
Parafin wax is flammable, you should have gone with the double boiler method just to be safe... I just made some wax slugs myself, bottom half of a beer can floating in a pot of water works great, no risk of fire.. PLUS you don't get wax all over your wife's favorite pot! Also, when pouring the shot/wax you should have done it over a paper plate, so you didn't get wax all over your wife's new stove.. heh heh
9). Put down some tin foil, or a paper plate.
10). Don't forget to thank the VP for the shotgun suggestion....hahahaha
Thanks Joe!
looks like a good idea for a new type of paintball game, lol. that's the cool thing about shotguns, so many specialty shells. most are too expensive. i liked the 3 pack flares wal mart used to sell.
i played paintball some from age 13-15, then found that red ryder bb guns were much cheaper, way more fun, less hassle, and usually didn't hurt as bad.
I did a test with wax slugs made of crayons and hotglue slugs and i found that for the most penetration you need to make hotglue slugs with bird shot and bb gun bbs mixed! works amazingly! will be posting a video soon!
I'm not sure if you noticed, but I filled the bottom up with a bit of wax only before I added both the shot and wax to make the slug heavy in the front...none of these were loaded with more then an ounce of lead. I tried to spread it evenly. There shouldn't be any problems with over pressure on these. I might need to annotate that though, b/c you make a good point.
I could only do that if Mrs FirearmPop went away on vacation. Cause if she saw me she would use the slugs on me!! lol
you had all those nice colors and when you mixed them all together aparently you get crayolas version of a fresh dump 1 night after moms famous meatloaf. lol good video.
The shot needs warmed a little to get a good coat of wax around all the pellets....
Also,....Not all waxes are created equal.....try adding a little beeswax to the mix,....crayons are brittle,,....crayola are less brittle but they still need a little bees wax...
i usually melt the 1 oz of birdshot pour it into a 12ga mold to make the lead slug then seal it into the shell with wax or glue ect.
Man, you've got a great wife. Mine would kill me if I did this on her oven. You might want to keep her!
can't you just pour the wax into the shell with the shot still in it?
I liked the melting crayons
next time use a news paper or paper towel under the shells so the wax dont make a mess on moms stove.
wow iraqveteran8888 should have turned these into a franchise and bought a copyright ; ]
after my own experimentation I have concluded that buying slugs is a waste of money. A cut shell is 90% as good and explodes on impact. It will turn a jug of water to confetti, hits like a truck and can cut down trees. The downside of cutshells is not being able to pump follow up "slugs." thus you get an advantage by makeing these. I dump out the shot and use BB's for my wax slug. They just seem to work better. I also make my own homeade rabbit/bird shot by mixing BB's and stock 7.5 shot.
So I have been watching allot of the "waxer" vids from you, Tao and IV8888. I was wondering if any of you have tried cutting the shell open and pouring the wax right in on top of the shot without making your mixture first. That seems like it might work a little easier and be a little less messy.
Oh lawd! This is going to be good.
I wouldn't and haven't ever trimmed any of the wadding. That's about the only way you could ever end up putting more shot back in than there was in the first place...I've made and shot hundreds of wax slugs, I love them. Cheap and effective. You should get yourself a wide funnel that just fits inside the shell, much less mess and easy to control your pour.
now this gives me an idea. i have a 1851 replica revolver. think i could use the lead casting mold, and use wax instead and make wax round balls for it?
#4 & #5 were prolly hott loads just maybe---oops you spilled then chased down those wascully pelllets ----Genius!~
Home made glaser safety slugs...
Jeezuz! Bird shot is up to $0.27 a shot at Walmart when the have the cheapest 100 round bulk boxes in stock, and their 1oz Rifled Slugs when in the 15 pack come to around $1.10 a shell. For the amount of time ( And mess from not planning better ) I can not see why anybody would do this unless you were shooting more then 10 slugs at a time or something.
Been thinking about trying this at least once to see the results at the range first hand, I have an old H&R single shot break open I don't show any love for anymore and she's begging for a nitch shooting I won't do with the pumps or sidexside.
What if i dont want to put the bbs in the mix because the range i go to does not let me shoot bird shot just slugs and i cant afford slugs 8$ for 5 rounds, or for 6$ i buy 25 bird shot shells and convert them but to slug only no bbs
What do you do with a wax slug and what purpose does it served compared with a conventional slug?
someones not gonna be allowed to use the stove for a while
been done... Way to jump on the banwaggon!
We all know it's been Done bud lmao its not a bandwagon and he never claimed to have invented it. It's a tutorial.
It'll be good...trust me
Cutting a little off the wad, was that just to lower it? anyway, love your vid's and take care...
how do you know how much lead isn't too much for each shell? that's my main concern before i try these
Ah; thank you.
Funnel would help with no mess.....
do these leave any wax residue in your shotgun?
What was that white whickerbill cut off and why please?
New idea....bees wax buck shot
Will you compare them to slugs?
Aluminum foil on the stove top is your friend. Angry wives are not!
@Zach Bartlett yes .
Sloppy work but fun to do lets see what your wife said lol my wife wasn't to happy when I did this ;)
If you don't mind me asking, what's the point of wax slugs?
Wouldn't that coat the inside of the barrel with wax? Let me know how it goes. I wouldnt try this...
If you wrap the pot in tin foil it makes less mess when meting the wax ;)
my wife would have beat me senseless.. lol...
@DocTacDad LOL, I know thats what made me think of it. All to familiar....
big tease
Please link me to it, checked your profile and cannot find it =/
i did this but they keep breaking up, why?
I just made and annotation to clarify what I was doing there...
can you use glue gun to make wax slug???
Why not?
If you notice half those crayons are broken from being left on the floor...sigh...
3:07 LoL .....Classic
WTF CRAYONS MELT?!
they look like chocolate slug... um chocolate slug.
You'd have a hard time getting it consistent I'd think.
That would have been way to easy...LOL
That looks like a great way to slice your thumb off. How about investing in a midget tubing cutter? A great little tool which will neatly and SAFELY slice copper pipe, I'm sure it would make light work of a plastic tube, slowly tighten as you twist and it slices neatly through. Ask somebody who has just dug a knife blade a quarter of an inch into their thumb whether they'd pay $20 not to have done that...
i see you a fan of brad sucks. Nice!
Done...check the channel
try hot glue .....
first
For Christ sakes, spend the extra money and buy real slugs instead of risking life and limb, as well as maybe ruining a gun on ghetto ammo.
this music sucks
