  • Countries and companies around the world have placed in their faith in electric vehicles as their main transport to a more sustainable future. However, the state of current battery technology is perhaps the weakest link on the bridge to that rosy future. Put bluntly by the BBC: “Electric cars: what will happen with all the dead batteries?”
Entrepreneur & engineer Carlton Cummins will be discussing the these issues and some solutions being developed. While countries and companies all over the world are making an admirable commitment to electrical vehicles in the near future, the move to EV’s presents a new challenge around the manufacture, disposal and recycling of the billions of new batteries that will be needed to power this new EV future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Sustainability is not exactly just servicibility. Even with life extensions, the end-product (aka e-waste) that is created is toxic and harmful to the environment (like plastics). There is no way around that currently, except implementing massive (read expensive) recycling and disposal programs, and even then they are not guaranteed to protect the environment over the long run.

Agreed. Sustainability to me is fundamentally about solving today's problems in a way that doesn't inhibit future generations from solving their own. This requires a very comprehensive approach in a number of areas (not just in technology). Aceleron work in serviceability (extracting more value from materials) is one area in the many opportunities for improvement that's why Im looking forward to colaborating with others on the sustainability cause.
