I bought my 2000 Insight this past August as my first car. It's not fast, but it handles pretty well and it's still fun because it's a stick shift. It's the enthusiast's hybrid. All my friends are jealous of my gas mileage. It'll be a great car for college and I'll never get rid of it!
I think this is my favorite of all your videos I've watched. I agree 100%. I used to laugh at these cars until i started trying to find a used car that gets good gas mileage. I commute in southern California 80 miles a day and my Insight i bought almost 4 years ago has already paid for itself in its first 2 years. Im a car guy and had lots of cars too....and love Honda. The more i read about this car, the more i wanted one. So glad i found my Insight.
Amen on the driver engagement/enthusiast thing. Look around. Everyone else is on their phone and driving is just an interruption to them (look at how they can't stop using the phone even when they're driving).
I think you have said it the best about what makes the insight so special. It is uncompromising and demands your engagement to achieve its goal. This is part of what makes it unique, simple, direct and pure
The manual version is a lot more fun. I originally bought one as just to save gas and to focus on my project car. Damn thing has taken all my attention away from my real project car and it's just fun to tinker with and hammer on around town.
Played with American muscle cars all my early life, But I "get it". About to drop nearly 2000$ into an 04 I picked up last year. Just Love the little thing.
I have one since 2010 and i love it, every body is jealous here in Mexico about it, just I see another a month ago wrecked in a town nearby and just I have to buy and restore it was so bad , and now have two.
It's like driving artwork. The car was uncompromising in it's time and is still the best at what some new cars could want to be. Basically, it has style in a sea of what could qualify as cars for a rental car fleets.
My 2003 is DIRT CHEAP to run, cheap to insure. I have over 160k miles I paid $1600 for it. I put a $100 12V battery in it and drove it 40,000 miles since 2017 without putting anything more into it than gas, oil changes, and an air filter. I finally bought a grid charger, new tires, and put front brakes in the last month. Then I bought a 2019 Chevy Volt a few weeks ago, only 3600 miles, leather, heated seats and steering wheel, remote start, etc, etc. I have been back to driving my Honda Insight the last few days because I just like the car. I may make the Insight my "winter beater" and drive the Volt in Spring, Summer, Fall. I hate the salt all over our roads right now and hate to put any new car through that highly corrosive slop. The car has been starting on the secondary starter/12V battery the last few days due to the cold...works flawlessly. I love the Volt but I love the Insight too. I just like whipping around in the Insight and getting outstanding mileage, ultra low pollution, and keeping the car out of a landfill. If I can inspire family, friends, and coworkers by having experience with hybrids and electric cars, that's icing on the cake.
It's interesting to watch this review,I had my Y2000 for three years now as an import from Japan with aircon as standard and CVT autobox and 80 mpg here in the UK,UK gallon is larger.4.54 Litres, yes it's uncompromising,it does handle the roads well and I've driven 600 miles in a day and wasn;t overly comfortable,as a side note I work at RR motorcars at Goodwood England, a press reviewer mentioned the Insight's drag CD as being the same as the all electric RR Spectre so Honda were well ahead in their thinking that a well renown luxury car maker have only taken 22 years to equal the insight.
Thanks for this video. I loved my silver 2004 Insight. Peppy to drive, easy to parallel park and auto-stop is so cool. I just sold it today after 17 years of service. Sad to see it go, but now I have a CRV and didn't need 2 vehicles any longer.
Please keep up the Insight videos! Maybe there would be more interest in these cars if they heard your take on them. However, other RUclipsrs say they don't get many views on their Insight videos. Interesting to me that you love the car due to it's being uncompromising but you don't care much about the fuel efficiency, even though that's what the car is uncompromising towards.

Loving the insight videos - great maintenance guides. This car is so underrated. Got one for $2000 and it's been a great investment as a daily driver.
How is it now?
