You were discussing why spoof comedies have devolved into plotless unconnected setups for the next joke. One of the reasons given by the network for canceling the original Police Squad was that it required the audience to pay too close attention to get all of the jokes. Also, Nordberg is played by O.J. Simpson, pre-glove days.

the original TV show didn't work because people didn't realize it was supposed to be a comedy because there was no laugh track... if it came out now after many shows since 'The Office', 'Curb Your Enthusiasm', 'Parks & Recreation', 'Modern Family', etc. have gotten rid of the laugh track it probably would have succeeded

@3:10 -- "I think that was Putin before that." Remember, this movie was released in 1988, so it wasn't Putin. He would have been a mid-level operative in the KGB at that time, and not of any political fame or importance. As I recall, the leaders at the table were depictions of Khomenei, Khaddafi, Gorbachev, Idi Amin, Yasser Arafat, and a couple of others I don't remember. But all were "enemy" leaders in 1988.

The only time I ever was almost thrown out of a movie theater was when I saw this movie. If you ever had one of those times where as much as you tried to stop laughing, you couldn't and it keeps getting worse... That was me from the second Nordberg (OJ Simpson btw if you didn't notice) leaned into the wet paint after getting shot... right to the end of the movie. I drove everyone nuts screaming in laughter. It probably was like sitting in a theater with the Joker.
This one is my favorite of the three Naked Guns but you'll still like the other two. Very funny movies!

Denmark and Scandinavia here, I'm not quite a Nielsen myself, but my name is Frank (though not Drebin), and my mother's sister and that part of my Family are all Nielsens. Leslie Nielsens father was actually a police officer, or more correctly he was an immigrant from Denmark who joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His brother became the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada for a few years in the 80's and his half-uncle was the Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt who twice was awarded an honorary Oscar and a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in his honor the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award" is still a special Oscar named by the Oscar Academy.
The kind of secretly funny part is that when he is offered a Cuban cigar he said he is "Dutch-Irish, my father was from Wales", because in real life Leslie Nielsen's mother was from Wales, so he was neither Dutch or Irish, but he deliberately switched the "Wales" part from his mother to his father in this joke, he then go on to invite Priscilla Presley out for dinner, saying that he knows this out of the way place, that serve great [Danish] Viking food.
I hope you are also going to watch the naked gun 2½ and 33½, but I also recommend Dracula: Dead and Loving It, though he has done loads of movies and TV series. Btw, when Leslie Nielsen died, ESPN published a hilarious obituary for the opera singer "Enrico Pallazzo" in his honor, that you can go google and look up.

The seires this was based on, Police Squad (1982), only ran for a couple episodes before it was pulled off the air. But it became such a hit on VHS rentals that it inspired the Zucker Bros. them to make the film. The opening gag is literally "what's Frank Drebben been up to since the show was cancelled".. which is "fighting every "scary" 80s dictator and saving the world I guess".

I'm a bit puzzled at the thought that Airplane! doesn't have a plot. It even has a back story that comes back to give Ted the impetus to go and land the plane (the George Zip story that Dr Rumack delivers). I think it has a very well-constructed plot.
But anyway, I heard you talk about 'The Pink Panther' and thought 'have they really seen 'The Pink Panther'?', which led me to discover that there was a reboot of the Pink Panther series in 2006, with Steve Martin as Clouseau! How did I miss that?
So thanks for that, something I will have to look for!

    My lame claim to fame:
The marching band at the end is the USC band, but the recording of Louie Louie is the Rice Univ MOB. Then Rice director Ken Dye was an undergrad at USC, and somehow got the performance rights to Louie. I’ve heard that the USC director was none too pleased. As a Rice band member and later staffer, we used the movie fees to subsidize our game travel for a while.

I put all 3 on the same tier, but note that Blazing Saddles also includes a heavy focus on satire, which is not part of the experience of the other two. I also think which one is better can come down to what mood you are in at showtime!

Oh this silliness is the first of a trilogy. Also you have two camps that competed in this genre during the 80's & 90's. The first camp was Abrams & Zucker (who made Airplane & the Naked Gun trilogy) and then you have Mel Brooks (who made Blazing Saddles). So definitely check out both their movies like Naked Gun 2 & 3, Spaceballs (1987), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead & Loving It (1994).

The spoof movies experienced a rebirth in the late 90s with the Scary Movie franchise. The Wayan Brothers became the new Zucker Brothers. Spoof movies were celebrated for another several years before they overstayed their welcome. They started to be pumped out with low effort and lowbrow humor, with movies like Disaster Movie and Superhero Movie and shit like that. This led to dwindling box office sales as everyone was just over it. Hollywood saw this as the demand for spoof being over and stopped redlighting them. We're due for another resurgence. Though Tropic Thunder got close to spoof territory

The funny thing about Leslie Nielson is that he used to be a straight actor. Saw him in a movie where he was the romantic lead. His last straight role was in the "Poseidon Adventure". And his first funny role was "Airplane". The last movie I saw him in was "An American Carol". It was a political spoof. I love him so much. I don't like stupid humor. I love ridiculous humor though (as in, it's funny because it's a ridiculous situation). That can be a very fine line. He threads that line very well.
A new very funny movie for some of the same reasons as "Blazing Saddles" and "Naked Gun" is Taika Waititi's "JoJo Rabbit". If you hadn't seen it, I'd highly recommend it. Thank you for another great reaction. So happy I found your channel.

It is unbelievable that this character found Leslie Nielsen after the age of 50! I love the films of these crazy directors (airplane, top secret, police squad series) and I watch them again every Christmas! My days were golden when I saw them and I think the 80s it was one of the freest and most progressive decades of filmmaking! ❤️❤️❤️✊

Back in the seventies, there was a police drama on TV called _The Streets of San Francisco._ Leslie Nielsen did a guest appearance on three episodes of that series. I haven't been able to find them to watch them, but I'm told that he modeled Frank Drebin on the character he played in that series and that watching those episodes now is painful because you keep expecting some funny shit to happen but it never does.

Almost all reactors see Leslie Nielsen as a comedian who does Naked Gun comedy movies but your comment about his 'serious delivery' was spot on because Leslie Nielsen has decades as a dramatic actor before this movie came about & for the older generation part of the😳Shock. Was seeing serious actor Leslie Nielsen doing... OMG... A comedy movie.

Both sequels are well worth watching. Watch in order, though the last one is probably better than the second one, and can be standalone films. The actors were mostly serious actors, lending to the dry delivery of the jokes, and better acting in general than usually seen in films like this.
Young Frankenstein is probably Brooks best film. Not as many jokes as Blazing Saddles, but a better “film.” It helps if you’ve seen the original 1930’s Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein films, but not required. It does add another layer of appreciation, as certain scenes/elements are direct spoofs (although the plot isn’t exactly the same). They also found a lot of the lab equipment/machines from the original movies and used it in this film. It’s both a spoof and an homage to those films.
Get Smart is based on a ‘60’s TV Show called… Get Smart. One of the creators/writers of the original TV series was… Mel Brooks.
Pink Panther was a reboot of a series of ‘60’s and 70’s movies.

It's possible this could have inspired some of the theatrical version of Get Smart, but Get Smart was a tv show from the 1960s which could have had an influence on Police Squad more.

  • @Rebel9668

This was based on a short run tv series called Police Squad (In Color) that starred Leslie as well. It had all the comedy of the movies but it came out in the early 80's and was just way too ahead of its time and only lasted like 7 episodes. There was a series back in the 60's with this sort of comedy as well called "Get Smart!" that is a real gem in its own right. It starred Don Adams who later was the voice for the cartoon character "Inspector Gadget". If you liked Johnny English, you'd love Get Smart!

@@davidlally592 I guess you didn't get my joke of What!!?? Because when they used the cone of silence neither one could hear what the other was saying, lol. So "Sorry about that, Chief!" I always loved seeing where Agent 13 would be hiding next, in a locker, a hollow tree, a trash can, etc. and also how Hymie the robot always took everything so literally, lol.
In Get Smart Again instead of using the cone of silence they went to the top of a skyscraper and brought in helicopters in place of the cone of silence and called it "Hover Cover", LOL! The end result was pretty much the same with the added complication of the wind from all the rotors nearly blowing them off of the roof.

Lion fish are not that poisonous. When I worked at an aquarium shop when I was much younger, one of my co-workers was trying to bad a Wrasse for a customer, and forgot there was a Lion fish in the 55 gal tank. She took a quill in the base of her thumb. It swelled up some, but she never went to the hospital.
