The mole moving around is a call back to Marty Feldman's hump switching sides in Young Frankenstein. The hangman was played by the same guy who played the hangman in Blazing Saddles. Foxing them was a take off of faxing someone. E-mail didn't exist when this was made so fax machines were the trendiest mode of communication. The life saving pill Latrine gave the sheriff was an actual Life Saver. The screaming kid was a Home Alone parody.
I've seen this movie a ton of times and I never noticed the LifeSaver! 😂
Also the Patriot Arrow was a reference to the Patriot Missile System that was being shown off in Iraq shooting Scud missiles out of the sky before they reached their targets. The Iraq War was all over CNN and people actually watched it in those days.

It indeed is a Patriot missile reference, from… I’m sorry, my history knowledge is lacking. But I still know Patriot Arrow wouldn’t have been a reference to anything else.
The paying the toll at the bridge "drowning" scene was in reference to "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" that starred Kevin Costner. Also, the reference to being a Robin Hood that could speak with a English accent was a pot shot at how bad Kevin Costner's British accent was, which is why he didn't even try to fake it in the movie. Cary Elwes is actually British.
Since you guys said "That guy who played Robin Hood", you have GOT to watch Carey Elwes in "The Princess Bride". That was the movie where he learned sword fighting (in one of the greatest swordfights in cinema history).

Trying not to add a spoiler but they both make the same comment in the middle of the fight. With this comment in mind go back and watch the whole fight again. I used to do sword fighting in a reenactment group and can only be envious of both of them.

I think a lot of this goes over younger people’s heads. There are some specific references, like “jaywalking” and the Rodney King reference from Dave Chappelle that are very relevant to people in 1993, but not as much now. Where the jokes in Mel Brooks’ early films are more or less timeless, starting with Spaceballs, weren’t getting into “you had to have been there” territory at this point. It’s fantastic for those of us who were raised with Prince of Thieves and the Errol Flynn version, as well as Home Alone and early 90s culture, but for everyone else, I’m sure they’re wondering WTF is going on. Even the rap intro (written by Mel Brooks) is very of its time.I don’t remember laughing at the rap back then like I do now. I just thought it was cool and current. Now it’s unintentionally funny.

At my high school back in the 90's, we did this skit show in drama once a year called act-athon. So all the drama kids had to get into groups and come up with our own skits. One year all the boys split off in their own group and kept their skit real hush hush, the rest of us had no idea what they were up too. The day of the performance we were all extremely curious to see what they came up with so we all watched from the audience. The curtain comes up and all 10 of the boys are dressed like the men in tights. They did the entire number " Men in Tights" . I don't think I have ever laughed so hard at a high school play until that day and of course, they were voted best skit. It was amazing and I will never forget it!
Some girls at my middle school did a routine to the “We’re Men” song. It was the early 90s. 😂

One of my favorites! My son played the Men in Tights dance segment for me when I was in the hospital. If you can’t laugh at it you must be dead. Blinkin’ is the best!😂
You'd have gotten more of the jokes if you saw Robin Hood Prince Of Theives with Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman, and The God Father.

True to get some of the references they should have seen..... Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, Disney Animated Robin Hood, Home Alone, The Princess Bride, Blazing Saddles (Which they have seen) along with the ones you mentioned......
One of the most overlooked Mel Brooks films is "Silent Movie". Mel made a legit silent movie in the seventies about a director trying to convince top stars to be in a modern silent movie. I rank it just after "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein".

At around 28:00, the "Patriot Arrow" is supposed to be like the "Patriot Missile"
One of the most potent weapons the U.S. has.
It's an ICBM, or Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, and usually carries one or more nuclear warheads.
And with our current tech (GPS, etc.) it can hit the door of a building after being launched from over 3 thousand miles away.
The MIM-104 Patriot the they refer is Surface to Air Missle capable of destroying enemy cruise missile, ballistic missiles, even ICBM and Hypersonic missiles. The missile is part of Patriot (Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target) Air Defense system. Missile itself is depending on model is 2-3 feet long and cannot use nuclear warhead. The missile rose prominence during 1991 (2 years before film) for defending Kuwait from Iraqu Scud missiles.
It was not an ICBM, it was a SAM (Aurface to Air Missile)

whats funny to me is pretty much none of the reactions to this movie I have seen have understood this reference. When even as a late 90's kid myself I imediately understood what it was. Just surprises me since patriot missles were really well known for a long while. Yet now it seems to be a forgotten bit of US trivia.
Fun fact, 21:45 after watching that, this is how I genuinely thought circumcision worked lmao, wasnt until embarrassingly late that I realized that was not in fact how that works.....

What Script Fact: The scene where the Sheriff (Roger Rees) falls through the roof of Latrine's (Tracey Ullman) room and she tries to get him to have sex with her was completely improvised.
Deep Cut Fact: When the newly recruited Merry Men are getting outfitted with clothing and weapons, their tights are taken out of giant plastic eggs. This is a reference to L'eggs pantyhose, which used to be sold in plastic egg packages.
Traveling Gag Fact: Throughout the movie, a mole on the face of Prince John (Richard Lewis) changes position. It starts on his left cheek, then his chin, his lip, his right cheek, and finally his forehead. This is a nod to the famous "I-Gor's Hump" gag from Young Frankenstein (1974).
Hollywood Accents Fact: The gag about Robin (Cary Elwes) being able to speak with an English accent is a reference to Kevin Costner's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Sir Patrick Stewart plays King Richard talking in a thick Scottish accent, a reference to Sir Sean Connery's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Some critics found Connery's accent inappropriate for the role, since King Richard would not have spoken with a Scottish burr (thus providing comedic fodder for Mel Brooks).
This film is funnier if you've watched other Robin Hood movies. The scene with Little Jon "drowning" in the river is a poke at the comparable scene in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner.
If you have not seen/reacted to it, I suggest what so many put into that very small box of "Perfect Movies" and this one goes by the name of "The Princess Bride". Robin Hood, real name Cary Elwes, also stars in it. HIGHLY recommended! As for ranking this movie, 8.2. I think a few of the jokes went over ya'll's heads due to your age.

The dad from Wizards of Waverly Place is the third son of Dom DeLuise, who is in almost every Mel Brooks movie (the choreographer in BS, the Emperor in History of the World Pt 1, Pizza the Hut, and Don Giovanni in this one).
The son was one of the villagers in the opening credits too.
First Mel Brooks movie I ever saw. Granted, I still regard Blazing Saddles and both versions of The Producers in higher regard, but it’s a nostalgic movie. It’s very 90s. Some of the cultural references of the time still crack me up. It’s a spoof primarily of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (the Kevin Costner embarrassment) and the Errol Flynn version from 1939. Cary Elwes is my second favourite Robin Hood. Tracey Ullman is hilarious as Latrine the witch. She’s a British comedienne and had several shows in America. She almost laughs after the “I touched it” line. Still gets me. Cut! Before she pulls a Cleavon Little and actually laughs! If you haven’t seen it, History of the World Part 1 is very funny too from Mel Brooks. They did a miniseries sequel recently on Disney+. I’m at episode 3 and I’ve gotten some good laughs from it. The historical comedy is amazing. “How did these dumbasses enslave us?”😂

Well to be fair Mel Brooks has always been meta. It's kind of his thing. He was pretty ahead of his time in that regard. It's like a blend of modern meta humour and old school dad jokes that hasn't ever really been replicated except maybe in Leslie Nielsen movies.
There is actually turned Mel Brooks ”The Producers” into a musical. They even did a live action movie of the musical, it’s great!
The woman crushing the sidewalk has got to be the funniest clip in movie history.
Not sure if anyone said this yet, but the line "Unlike some Robin Hood's; I can speak with an English Accent", was in reference to Kevin Costner. He was hired a the last minute to play the lead in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and didn't have the required time to learn the accent. So he would repeatedly break from English to American throughout the film. It was one of the things many critics, and audiences noticed most. Mel points fun at this; because Cary Elwin is English, and therefore, has an English accent.
For me; this wasn't my favorite movie, as Mel used too many jokes from other of his movies. I've seen Mel's movies so many times; the jokes didn't hit as well as they did the first time. I was always pointing out; 'Oh, that's from Young Frankenstein. OH; that was from Blazing Saddles', instead of laughing. By the time; we get the Dracula: Dead and Loving It, his humor kind of wore out. One of the reasons why that was his last film. Even recently; Hulu did History of the World part 2, and I couldn't make through the first episode. It was that bad; as far as I was concerned. Mel was great in his time; between shows like Get Smart, or his many comic hit movies, Mel's time has come and gone. And is one that can never be duplicated.

There are probably many references you missed if you did not see the original film before watching the parody. This n movie is based on “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves”
I'm glad you guys enjoyed this movie. Not my favorite Mel Brooks film, but still fun to watch. The dyslexic Sheriff of Nottingham was my favorite character. Next Mel Brooks should be the original Producers. (1967). If you guys have High Anxiety on your list, you have to watch more Alfred Hitchcock movies to get all the jokes. And no, Cam doesn't look like that kid in this movie.
Interestingly, the dolphin sound used for the fox isn't a dolphin. It's the call of a kookaburra (an Australian kingfisher) sped up. So it's a kookaburra sound being used as a dolphin sound being used as a fox sound.

The official word you were looking for is called pacing. It gaavuky applies to the editing of film but also applies to directing as well. With so many dailies, sometimes Hollywood editors go against the director's wishes (very risky) because the editor is extremely overconfident about his or her work.

Gotta see The Princess Bride. The actor playing Robin Hood is in it along with Andre the Giant, 80’s wrestler. It’s not really a chick flick, it’s a comedy with the same edge as Brooks but it’s not Brooks. Every man I’ve seen loves the movie, it’s not what you’d expect by the name.

In the actual source material, John Little *beat* Robin at quarterstaff (they approached opposite ends and quarreled over who would give way to let the other cross first) and refused to join the Merry Men until Robin beat him at archery. Then he was renamed Little John. Robin also gets thoroughly thrashed by Will Scarlet, who is his nephew. All three, plus Arthur Bland, a recruit to the Merry Men found by Little John (Arthur thrashes John at staff, too) are all pummeled by a miller whom they accost as a joke, and who throws flour in their eyes to blind them before whipping all four. Robin loses fights s lot...
