Preserving food by drying it is likely the oldest form of food preservation ever done. Reducing them to powders was probably a close second.
If kept moisture free, powdered foods can last for many years. It'd also be highly transportable and take up far less space. Another plus is keeping vermin out of your food supply (though you can't guarantee insects hatching - a problem that's hard to prevent.) If they do show up, sieve them out, give your powder an hour or so in a dry heat source again and re-bottle. (Or, consider them as McBuggets - extra protein!)
You can even do this with meat.
add a dry bay leaf 2 savory powders or dry citrus peel 2 sweet dry foods 2 keep bugs out- i use the same, but more of it, w-all stored commodities- works great!
DIY-NailsBy-MOI yeah but he had it in a 200 degree convection oven overnight. That’s not enough to kill anything that might hatch?
What happened to your pinky?
@@melloncolliemedb I think it is greatly reduced. Not too mention that all enzymes are damaged at that temperature.
DIY-NailsBy-MOI 'McBuggets!' Lol!

tinaamariee😘 nice! Smart brotha! I’m definitely doing this especially with all this corona scare tactics. I needed a good vitamin powder and I like to do thing last myself to maintain the highest quality and this never occurred to me.
Hahaha
Here, try some apple powder! I just made it.

Agreed. Im doing blueberries & strawberries now.
Anjy Masmil same thing I said so cool😉👍🏻 you learn something new every day
Exactly. I like knowing that I don’t have to go out & purchase additional equipment.
@owleyes Malignaggi perhaps pastries
I know, me too! I can do this now with things I already have in my kitchen.
Lord, this Gentlemen needs a vacuum drier! Seriously, where other chef-freaks abuse 10,000s of $ equipment, he shows us with a food processor, an oven and a coffee mill how to turn 50ct vegetables into 5$ powder!!! That’s solid craft! Gold!

Lol a pound of blueberries is MUCH MUCH MORE than 50cents! You dumb
@@kellystar6733 not if you get them on a clearance table, at the end of the season or at farmer's market toward the end of the day. I just got 4 pounds of Kale for 50cents at Smart and Final. So you might be the dumb one.
Markus Federico i agree with you..
That’s what I’m saying intelligent and patient 😄
This is great info! A couple of tips…
If you don’t want to run your oven for a long time, hit up your local thrift stores. I bought a dehydrator with 6 regular trays, two mesh trays, and one “fruit leather” tray in practically perfect condition for $15.
Be careful using oils/fats if you’re going to try to store your powders longer than a few weeks. They can go rancid pretty quickly and spoil your dehydrated item.
*Good luck trying to find a GOOD QUALITY DEHYDRATOR at a thrift store or garage sale etc etc. “If you’re going to be using it a lot it’s best to invest!” ~Julia Child*
*That’s why I bought my first kitchen aid mixer* 😏 #thanksjulia
Watching all your time and effort showing me why the recent veggie/fruit vitamins they show on commercials are so expensive. They are time consuming to produce, but are so crucial to add to our diets. Thank you Sir/Chef, I Salute you!

Somebody took the powders you just made and mixed them together and sold them to me as a expensive supplement to add to my drinks or smoothies. Lol

They can be made into vitamins too and sold for even more 😉
Mom: where are all the fruits and vegetables?
Me: 😳

Hahaha
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I turned them into a teaspoon
I watched this video some time ago and was glad to see someone doing this. I dehydrate many more times than I freeze or can. I have gone totally to coring, chunking and pureeing my tomatoes and dehydrating the puree on fruit leather trays. The thin dry tomato crumbles up and stores in a much smaller space; I vacuum pack in jars. It is easy to add to soup, stews or chili.
I've wanted to make powdered fruits and vegetables for years now but, I always assumed that people used freeze driers! Man, this is good to know. Thanks! I want to go try some stuff out now.
Everybody here freaking out about nutrients and I'm thinking "hu, might try that to make my own watercolour pigments"

Freeze dry fruits/veggie thoroughly then grind them in mixer might be better, more nutrients is preserved.
no shit
Gil Matibag
I agree
awesome if you have the equipment
+ Gil Matibag - Good idea. My friend has a $3K freeze dry machine (they have started being “preppers”) I’m going to see if they’ll let me use their machine ....I’ll buy the fruits & veggies and we can share the end powder seasoning product.
Nice video!! If I may suggest, try slicing all of the fruits and veggies very thinly using a mandolin and don't juice them (unless you're planning to use the juices otherwise), then dehydrate the slices like you did the puree/pulp. You will yield far more powder and no need to pre cook the beets either. I hope this helps. Peace and love :-).
It really looked like what he was using was 'left overs', that the end product is not the game; but just value adding and total use of the product.
Exactly!!! An alternative is an old school juicer, if one wants the juice for another purpose, but forgo straining the pulp to be dehydrated.
imari2305 ....
The process is as follows clean fruit >slice fruit > dehydrate fruit > pulverize fruit! Starchy fruits can be used as a flour!
imari2305 hi, would you think the colour of these fruit/veg powders could be used to mix with art paint ie oils? im thinking mixing with white oil paint but not sure if they would last hmm
I love this, is not just the juice of the fruits are healthy but also the skin, not only using it in smoothie but as your salt or sugar added, it's amazing, value what you are doing.
I just learned a lot! Thank you. I"ve gardened for well over 55 years and always wondered what to do with my overage...now I know!
That’s so cool you could take empty gelatin capsule and make actual non synthetic vitamins
You can do this same thing with fewer tools and time. After blending the foods, just pour them into the flat trays (without holes) and pop them in a dehydrator. Dehydrators are only about $20. No strainers, no bowls, no spatulas.
u r the fastest chef i ever saw. your video was great. i never knew about this method. thanx, Robert.
Thanks! I’ve been doing research on how to make food powders so I can turn them into paints. I’ve been using berries as a watercolor chemical free paint. Could I use a dehydrator then a spice blender?

Now that it is quarantine time, those beet greens looked really delicious and nutritious. You can eat beet greens, radish greens, carrot tops. We had one carrot in the garden planted months ago with a lot of greens on top. I found recipes for carrot top pesto so I tried it out. It was more delicious than my basil pesto. Just make sure if you buy the carrots that they are organic so the carrot tops won't be toxic. I'll be eating more of the greens from the garden that I usually discard. Thanks for your drying presentation. Do you save the watery juices for drinks and soups?
What do you think it does to the vitamins in the foods?
@@NwoDispatcher Internet says that carrot tops "contain an impressive list of nutrients, including significant amounts of vitamin A, dietary fibre, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. There is no fat or cholesterol in these greens, and there are roughly 90 calories in 1 cup of these raw greens." Beet greens: "Besides supplying good amounts of protein, phosphorus, and zinc, beet greens are also a great source of fiber. Packed with antioxidants, they’re high in vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, copper, and manganese, and low in fat and cholesterol. Based on a 2,000 calorie diet, daily values of beet greens contain: 220% of vitamin A, 60% of vitamin C, 16% of calcium, and 15% of iron." Not sure if that was what your question was about. Thank you.

Really like this video as it's a great way to preserve flavour on bulk purchases - what would be great next are recipes using these salts/sprinkles yummy yum yum
Marrion Crooks + what do you mean preserve flavor on bulk purchases? How? Forgive my ignorance. Just wondering.
Paula, question is what do you do with these dry powders? Put them in water add alcohol and make a drink? Add in icecream? Eat them raw?
haris m + I think he said he puts then in smoothies & shakes. But the could be put in soup broths too. Another thing thats not on the video is instead of turning them into powder you could just slice or dice the bigger items, keep the smaller ones whole maybe, & dry them or dehydrate them, & turn them into your own dried foods like bana chips. You could have beet chips & all kinds of chips. Which you could eat as is or again store them to put in soup broths & such. I pretty much hate anything that's good for me. I always have. I've heard of people who love their veggies, or love this veggie, or that veggie. But for me, eating them is kinda torturous. Childish I guess. But I can't help it. So I'm always looking for new ways to consume them... I just didn't get what she meant by preserve flavor on bulk purchases. I guess that this way you can buy things in bulk, & preserve them this way...
