No one informed Rune that Fokina and Carlos trained together in the juniors. The drop shots were not going to work on him. Fokina read them like it was nothing, and boy is he FAST! That play really hurt Rune today, and since that's his usual play when he starts running out of steam, it was a big problem for him.

I’m not a big fan of Rune’s attitude although I absolutely love his game. But today, he had to be given credit for staying calm when the Spanish crowd went nuts. I mean, he did provoke them initially but later found his cool. His maturity level is going higher little by little for sure. But he needs a humble coach. Juan Carlos can teach humility. Patrick is himself a social media hungry coach who comes all guns blazing. He is the last person to teach anyone humility and maturity

We already know madrid open gives equal prize money to men and women. But If you take a look at 0:28, you get to see for example more people watching alcaraz matches over for example a
match where iga swiatek (current womens world no. 1) is playing. That is just one of the current reasons why men are being paid more than women in other tournaments. It is not just about gender. There are many factors considered like how much revenue they bring, how wta campaigns for their good since atp and wta are being run seperately, how many sponsors are there for their tournaments, how much crowd do they draw in, just like during williams sisters' era of dominance when whenever they play, the stadiums get filled, etc.

Thank goodness Fokina was able to finish off Rune in that tiebreak. ADF was clearly the better player in this match and should have finished off Holger earlier in the 3rd set. If not for one of the biggest chokes of the decade by Botic, Rune would have no titles this year, proving that his Paris run was indeed a fluke. Zverev vs Alcaraz will probably be a great match that could go either way. Madrid isn't one of Sachas favorite tournaments for no reason.

@@colethomas903 I think Shevchenko benefitted from the new Masters 1000 format where seeded players have to start cold turkey under new conditions against players who have had up to 3 rounds of adjustments. This also explains why Ruusovuori was able to take a set from Carlos (Carlos had to increase his racket tension by a full kg to get more control over the ball in the middle of the second set) and why so many seeded players fell through the cracks. Kudos to Carlos for having the mental clarity to make the racket tension adjustment! 1kg change makes a huge difference! I still think Medvedev can get through. DeMinaur is a great mover, though, so I am looking forward to their match up.

Audience were awful and whistled when rune served, cheered each time he had a net serve. Supervisor fokina wanted called, said that "our hawk eye are not trustworthy" on an open mike. Ref. spent entire night trying to get audience to "be respectful" and then proceeded to give Rune a warning??? Rune were calm the entire tournament and were the most grown up in that stadium. I cannot recall seeing a more disrespectful audience since McEnroe gave a crowd reasons to it. Rune have a strong mental side because most would have crumbled under these unworthy conditions. Absurd crowd that must have been drinking to much sangria. What a disgrace for the tournament and for Spain.
