Just a note: When the arborist bolted my tree together, he sprayed some sort of tar sealer into the crack on both sides, and then left the can with me. He said this would seal it up to keep the insects out till the bark grows over and heals it. I recoated it the second year and by the third year it was completely healed. That was at least 15 years ago and it is still a healthy tree. I think your tree will be fine.
Oh, I was just commenting about insects! I wondered if it would be vulnerable? I'm so glad you posted this, I hope they see it and find out what to use! Is it too late to use it now that it's already bolted together? This is just fascinating to me! Thanks Jim!😊
I would not advise of an such wound dressings as this is an outdated practice. In Urban Forestry, you learn that such products can prevent drying and encourage fungal growth, can interfere with wound wood or callus tissue, inhibits compartmentalization, and possibly serve as a food source for pathogens. The truth is, trees can repair these wounds on their own just fine without these products and is often done for aesthetic reasons.
When you said you can’t put a price on a tree and Aaron points to the Blue Spruce knowing in the future a wind storm will blow it down makes me realize you never know what is going to happen
Have you thought about tightening the buckle and bolts you used after the weight of the leaves are off in the autumn? It might be easier to tighten the tree up at that point.
Using This Old House as a reference is the best!!! Those guys (and girls 😊) always update to the best way to do any kind of work around the house. Also, there is an app that will identify plants & trees. It's very helpful. Love your videos 😍
on your other video i commented that this happened to our locust tree in 1975 in omaha by a tornado.. my grandfather and dad did this and the tree lived.... it healed itself and even grew over the bolts....by brother had to take down the tree a few years ago....which made me sad....but hopefully it will work for this tree ....good luck....
We are in Nebraska also. It happened to A tree in our back years way before we owned the house the tree was and is still living. Someone bolted it up many many years ago. Looks good to this day. The tree is ginormous!!!!!
Omaha, here too! We lost our maple in a wind sheer during a tornado warning in '08. I miss the shade it provided from the west sun. I'm so glad they're trying to save it rather than remove it!
@@sarahcrossen550 actually they live over 100 years ( ours was 80) and if ours recovered from 1975 tornado that hit omaha after being split in two. I’m so glad your giving this a chance to heal. I had a Japanese maple split. It was tiny (under 4 ft) I zip tide together and it worked. Isn’t nature wonderful.
So glad you decided to try and save your tree! I was able to save my purple plum that I absolutely loved. A storm took it completely out of the ground. I had an arborist come and he said just throw it away because it would die. Boy was he wrong! Put it right back up in the ground (was super heavy) and we staked it up. It lived another 14 yrs until another storm came and twisted it in half at the football. Then...I cried. I'm super impressed with the job you two did! I hope you have many more years of enjoying your beautiful tree! I'm in the process of planting my own Honey Locust and hope it looks as lovely as yours! Thanks so much for sharing!
This comment is about the video you recently did sitting by the pineapple fountain. There was a beautiful dove that flew in and seemed to land behind the fountain. Did anyone else see it. It was about 3.00. I kept repeating it to find it again as it was only a momentary flight and land. Beautiful bird. Magical too. Awesome.
I’m so glad Aaron explained the reasoning for hammering the end of the rod because I was wondering why that was happening. You guys did a great job of filming it all! I don’t really have large trees but learning about different tools and parts I have found is great knowledge for random projects that come up.
It looks great and it will work. My Dad told me of a split walnut tree that his grandmother saved in the 1940's, by lashing it together as tight as the men could get it and then driving a cross-cut saw through it. I'm assuming it was driven from the top down but he'd chuckle and say whoever cuts that tree down is in for a surprise when they go to cut it up. It's been 7-8 years since I drove by the old homestead and the house is gone but that walnut tree was still there.
Wow, so interesting! I didn't know you could do that with a tree. It looks great! The tree is so beautiful, I'm glad you guys decided to try and save it. And yes, I think it does need a third Bolt just for extra support down that split. Awesome job guys!🌳🌳😃👍
I have to just take a moment to really appreciate the photography and editing you do on all your videos. You both have such a beautiful eye for capturing the process of what you do with such clarity. Not only do I enjoy your videos for the gardening but they are so peaceful to watch. Thank you for all your efforts.
I am so glad you guys decided to bolt and cable the tree. The tree will grow around the bolts in the trunk and years from now they will be completely imbedded if not hidden. We have a lot of Honey Locust Shademaster and lost one to a wind/rain storm this spring, the tree split in two and had to be cut down. I am 99% positive your tree fix saved this tree.
It’s awesome y’all work so well together, Hubby and I do not, love that man but we have a hard time sometimes working on projects together . Yet we have been married for 35yrs. We do have a good time together doing other things though. 🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿🌺🌿🌺
I was waiting to here Aaron's theme song when he came out.😂🤣😂 That tree looks great. We lost 2 trees this spring so it is nice to see someone be able to save one. Great job guys.😍

Good job Aaron!! Kept on looking for a shot of Laura wearing the safety hat and sunglasses 🤔 I once had a red bud tree fall some during a storm and had an arborist do a similar contraption by staking it to the ground using the wire attached to the trunk. I cried when he drilled the hole on the trunk. 😥🌿
I had no idea this was possible so this was interesting to see that crack close up. Awesome editing too. I hope it works. It sure looks great. Thanks for sharing. Aaron's the man.👍
Love your attitude about try to make the best out of bad situations! ❤️ SO glad you could save that beautiful tree!!! (I'm not trying to argue with Aaron, but a person would most likely take $2 million if it was offered for a tree, however a person couldn't buy a mature tree that is comfortable in it's soil and growing space to replace the one like you have for any price, so in that way, mature trees are priceless! 🌳❤️🌲❤️🌳️) It was so cool to see the tree pulled together!!! The final result was beautiful and well done! I enjoyed looking at that whole area. SO beautiful! The matching containers along your driveway are looking GREAT. Love all of the fancy editing.
I’m so happy you are attempting to save the tree. I’m very impressed with what you did and how it turned out! On a side note the lavender colors in your Versailles garden and pots along the driveway really stood out in the background of your video. Such a soothing combination!
Save the tree, now that tree is dead, wait 5 years and it will be rotted in the middle , a top notch gardener trim the tree in february and split it in two to make 2 beautiful trees!!
We have a large Red Bud in the backyard that split, good to know we can now attempt to save it instead of cutting it down. Good job, great video and timely information.
An impish, spring storm squashed down a precious Pansy Forest Redbud 6-foot otherwise thriving fall-planted tree in my yard. A local friend in the nursery business suggested a similar treatment. Took $18.00 worth of materials to facilitate the initial support structure. Followed his recommendation to: 1. At initial installation to just tighten to resistance. 2. About every three weeks, to again just tighten to resistance the turn buckle in the structure. 3. It worked. 41 years ago, and, it is still just gorgeous!!!
I’m glad you are trying to save it as you guys are not ready for that project. But once you are ready, it will be beautiful as everything Laura does and it is your property and you can do anything you want.
Have you ever seen “Treehouse Masters” on TV? They build high-end tree houses and drill and bolt the trees to support a lot of weight. If they can do it, I think you have a good chance at it as well. Pete Nelson is located in Washington....maybe he can be part of one of your videos and provide some tips on your tree repair? Pete is a world-renowned tree house designer and builder and is known as the “tree whisperer.” Good luck with the tree repair. It is a beautiful tree, definitely worth trying to save.
This was so interesting to watch. You guys did such a great job! I was going to ask Aaron about hammering the bolt so thank you for answering that question!
Bravo! To save a tree means more oxygen - which is critical in saving our environment. Not to mention the great soulfulness that beloved trees provide. Great video! 🌲🌳🌲
I love This Old House. I'd trust anything they explain and demonstrated too. I'm also glad you mentioned the reasoning for hammering the ends of the bolts. I had been wondering while watching.

How did we manage before the Internet? Once the elements dull the shiny you won't notice those bolts. When I moved into my house nearly 30 years ago, I had a silver maple that grew with two trunks (a giant V) and talked to an arborist about cabling the trunks together, but ended up cutting down the tree because it was, well, a silver maple with unsightly nipple galls and TONS of leaves that didn't drop until after it snowed. You guys did a great job!

It looks good. Satisfying seeing the trunk come together as he was tightening. 🌳🙏 (tree prayer). Side note.. I, too, was hearing the Aaron entrance theme song in my head! Lol
My parents had a Mayday tree that split into thirds after a weird snowstorm that hit in the summer. The tree lasted another 25 years after bolting it together. They just had to remove it this year because it had a disease. It’s amazing what trees can overcome!!
Nice job Aaron! Hope it saves the tree at least until you change the area. I’ve been watching This Old House since the Bob Villa days and they are simply the best resource out there for hundreds of home projects. Long before HGTV, DIY and RUclips this is the show that folks turned to for information and they are still the best!
Excellent job Aaron!!! To prevent tree damage it's a good idea to keep the upper branches pruned. To save money you can hire a crew for 1/2 day and all the trees done a once.
Anyone else have a mini heart attack when the editing magic made it look like the tree was splitting I'm the middle of putting the bolts in? 😆 Good job on the tree Aaron 👍
Three cheers for Aaron 👏👏👏😊. I think it really looks good, so glad you didn’t have to take it down yet, and you’ve at least tried what you could to help it.
Wow! I thought that split was the end of the tree - so glad this repair seems to have worked! Well done! My husband watched this video with me and wanted me to let Aaron know he "saddled a dead horse" with the wire clips on the cable... thought he might want to know. He also wanted me to mention that for your application it should still be okay anyhow. We love your videos - thanks for all you do!
Amazing job Aaron🌳 I love how you get💩done!! My other Utube Erin has a ‘mr much more patient’! Laura has a ‘specialist’ in all things water irrigation, tools, tractors, Christmas🎄lights, container planting😉, not to mention a great daddy💙
This was fascinating to watch. Hope this works as it’s a beautiful piece in your garden. You’ve lost a lot already this year. I had envisioned a big ugly chain, but this is hardly noticeable. Great job Aaron💚🔨🔧
Oh, I'm so glad you asked us to pray for your tree! I was going to leave the comment that I was going to do just that! I know for a fact that God loves and cares for His creation (the tree), but even more than that He loves His kids (you and Aaron), so praying I will be! Nothing is too small to pray for, because there's no concern of ours that's "too small" to matter to Him! Love your channel!
I am SO THRILLED that you guys decided to save that beautiful tree!!!👍👍💜. I too think you should take steps to protect that wound from insects! Good job you two! 👍💖
Wow I’m super impressed with this bracing of the tree, that looks brilliant.....well done Aaron 👏👍 I hope the tree can be saved but if it has to go then it has to go. It’s such a beautiful shaped tree 🌳 But I do like the fact that you are going to try and save it. I’m being to think caps 🧢 are part of a PPE kit because my neighbours are doing some construction work and they all are wearing caps 🧢 🤷🏼♀️😆 xxx Laura you look beautiful and glowing xxx
Holy cow Laura, this video should have been titled " Hubby Takes Off Sunglasses!" Love your channel! You did a great thing trying, to save that beautiful tree! Happy growing!
Great job on the fix! Few quick tips: 1.) Noticed Aaron had to cut ends again after initially hammering the bolt into the tree because the threads got damaged. If you thread a nut on and leave it at the very end of the rod, it helps avoid this. 2.) Trees don't "heal" in the way we typically think. They compartmentalize and scar over concealing the damage, but the structural stability will usually not be strong enough once this happens to justify removing the bolts or cables.
You did a beautiful job! If you want additional confirmation, I recommend contacting treehouse masters. They drill into trees to build there structures. They are also non invasive builders so the work they do still considers the life and health of the tree. Good Luck
I was wondering about that. I hope Laura and Aaron do that as well. In other countries, they use cow dung to heal such tree wounds :)
Laura recently took out a pagoda dogwood that was treated with the same stuff.
Oh, I was just commenting about insects! I wondered if it would be vulnerable? I'm so glad you posted this, I hope they see it and find out what to use! Is it too late to use it now that it's already bolted together? This is just fascinating to me! Thanks Jim!😊
I'm so glad they were able to save the tree. My husband made the sane comment about applying the tar to protect against insects and water rot.

Yes! It played in my head. It needs to be a thing. Editor! Make it so!
It played in my head as well 😂
ME! I'm an Aussie lol
Ha - I went back and listened to Aaron's entrance to 'hear' this, I was expecting it to become the 'norm'. Funny.
Great Job Guys!! GOD Bless the talents and wisdom he has given us to save his creations!!🌳🙌🏼👍🏼
That was so interesting watching that, really hope the hard work pays off and your beautiful tree is saved x
Three cheers for Aaron 👏👏👏😊. I think it really looks good, so glad you didn’t have to take it down yet, and you’ve at least tried what you could to help it.
Aaron . . . The Cable Guy.
😆
Get er done, Aaron!
Hahaha
😂
W. Bovgvereav 😂
Amazing job Aaron🌳
I love how you get💩done!!
Does anyone else want to "take a turn" around their garden like a Jane Austen heroine? The Versailles garden is soooo pretty to me.
What a great medical procedure Laura 👍 , Thanks to Dr. Aaron, that was a successful surgery 😊
So happy you guys took this direction to safe the tree 👍🏻👏
yep, my dad did that with a maple and it grew fine for many many years.
I am SO THRILLED that you guys decided to save that beautiful tree!!!👍👍💜. I too think you should take steps to protect that wound from insects! Good job you two! 👍💖
I have a love/hate relationship with my money locust tree, but I have to admit seeing aaron drilling into the trunk really made me 😱😱
So glad you are giving this lovely tree another chance. You did a brilliant job.
Wow I’m super impressed with this bracing of the tree, that looks brilliant.....well done Aaron 👏👍
I hope the tree can be saved but if it has to go then it has to go. It’s such a beautiful shaped tree 🌳
But I do like the fact that you are going to try and save it.
I’m being to think caps 🧢 are part of a PPE kit because my neighbours are doing some construction work and they all are wearing caps 🧢 🤷🏼♀️😆 xxx
Laura you look beautiful and glowing xxx
Aaron is so nimble with his thimbles....BEAUTIFUL JOB. Fingers crossed.
Holy cow Laura, this video should have been titled " Hubby Takes Off Sunglasses!" Love your channel! You did a great thing trying, to save that beautiful tree! Happy growing!
Oddly satisfying to see the trunk come together. Good job ya'll!
I have gained even more respect for you guys. Bravo , for your effort !
wow! excellent job Aaron 👍🏾

Laura - Optimist / Aaron - Realist "Never say never" Awesome job guys looks good and safe.
How is the tree going a year later?
You did a beautiful job! If you want additional confirmation, I recommend contacting treehouse masters. They drill into trees to build there structures. They are also non invasive builders so the work they do still considers the life and health of the tree. Good Luck
Is there and update on this tree?
The two of you have no idea how cute you are!! I love you guys. Thanks for all your valuable advice.
I feel bad for the tree. But then I felt like it was receiving surgery, and thought just like Laura that it might mend and grow back together.
