  • What if a doctor could physically feel the pain their patients were experiencing? Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist and clinical researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital, can do just that. He has a neurological trait called mirror-touch, a medical mystery that causes him to feel the emotional and physical experiences of other people.

I think a lot of people are just getting confused and that's why they think it's fake Mirror-touch synesthesia is a rare condition which causes individuals to experience the same sensation (such as touch) that another person feels. For example, if someone with this condition were to observe someone touching their cheek, they would feel the same sensation on their own cheek. It has to be observed I don't think he made it that clear but if the patient has a headache for example but doesn't show any signs of having one he will not get a headache but if the patient then shows signs of having a headache by maybe holding his head or saying he's got a headache that's when the doctor feels it. It is a real condition and it's involuntary if he sees someone in pain he will always feel their pain no matter what but if he doesn't see then in pain he won't feel pain

@@hephaestus9901 , itsMelon- Read the title. The condition is called SYNESTHESIA. quite a number of musicians, painters, mathematicians, physicists, scientists have it & it shows in their work. It comes in a spectrum as well, some have combined senses & others are mild. We can imagine, but never fully experience nor comprehend what it actually is. We aren't born with it. Perhaps people like us who will never experience it would never know the advantages & disadvantages of having these abilities. Same as the handicapped/ physically impaired. We think we know how they experience the world through imagination, but if we are normal, we never will truly know.

I've been diagnosed with Mirror-touch Synesthesia as well as Grapheme-colour (numbers & letters have colours for me), Ordinal Linguistic Personification (numbers and letters have genders and personalities),Chromesthesia (basically, I see colours when I hear your voice or any sounds), Spatial Sequence (I see sequences such as days of the week or the 12 months in the space around me, e.g January is right in front of me and February is next to my left ear) and Auditory Tactile (I feel and have tensions, tingles, physically when I hear sounds also). I won't go into details with my types of Synesthesias but for Mirror touch, it's a bitter-sweet experience. I, personally and weirdly, love getting injections because the feeling of the thin needle piercing through your skin and suddenly feeling as though it's become 10x thicker is absolutely satisfying. However, as much as I love vaccination day in school, it starts to get pretty painfully numb if I see other people getting the injection in the same spot of my opposite arm, over and over again as they wait in line. So I try to not look around at others getting it after I'm done with mine...but I can resist everything but temptations.

Fox has a good format presenting different issues, including health. "Mirror Touch" may be compared to the ancient arts of "transference" of touch or auras of body heat transfer. In the past, this has been known as the Super Sensitive Person. Once a nerve path has been opened in the brain, a signal is constant when "triggered".

I only have mirror-pain synesthesia. I don't feel just any sensation of touch. Only pain, and usually only harsh uncontrolled pain. I don't feel other people's headaches, and I can watch minor surgeries, or cartoons like Looney Toons without feeling anything, but not violent movies or videos of actual injuries. If I can anticipate the pain/injury, it's sometimes not as bad, but it's impossible to avoid completely.
However, it's not just when I see the pain/injury. It also happens if I hear about it, or if I just happen to imagine it.
Having this condition has definitely been a burden for me. It makes it difficult to watch certain movies/shows, or violent sports, or even just to hear people's experiences, but I guess it does make me more empathetic to other people's pain.
It would be nice if I could also feel just nornal touch sensations like massage. Being on guard all the time sure causes a lot of muscle tension. I could really go for a mirror touch massage. 😆

It is not a mystery and it is not odd at all, as a massage therapist I tune into my clients in this way to help them. As a painful area eases, I know what to focus on next. It is part of the human electromagnetic field, we all have a field and a shift in awareness allows it to be felt. It is not strange, perverted or invasive it is a gift as a healer you can achieve with healing awareness. It is about time doctors become aware of this natural sense and actually help their patients. It is a gift of service to others and should be applauded.

Bullshit or not, if this makes him a better doctor and connect with his patients' cases better, then who the hell is anyone to judge? As long as he's a good doctor nobody should vilify him. I'll take him over the douchebags who salivate at the thought of prescribing me something they have no idea will help and just want money for each stupid treatment suggestion.
