David Lee Roth, singer does martial arts and wanted to bring it into this video. Eddie Van Halen, the guitarist is one of the best of all time. Michael Anthony plays bass. Alex Van Halen is on the drums. He is Eddie's brother. The band Van Halen is named after Eddie and Alex. And they are one of the best bands ever! They were my absolute favorite in high school! Play all the Van Halen records! Imagine it's 1979 1980? Disco is all the rage. You see this intriguing record with a band name of Van Halen on the cover so you pick it up. You drop the needle and "Running with the Devil" starts. Changed my life. You definitely need to listen to running with a devil. Warning, this is a rabbit hole! Enjoy the journey! RIP Eddie. We miss you!❤
My bf boyfriend is a Hagar fan. I think Sammy is the better musician but Roth was the better front man. Michael Anthony is an epic bassist but got screwed over (Alex's fault really) and Alex is a so so drummer. As a percussionist, his lead in for Hot for Teacher is just incredible! Still dislike him though. Eddie was the true talent in the band. Eruption and Cathedral is just another level of epic. Balance wasn't great and we don't acknowledge Van Halen III. But their debut album, 5150 and especially 1984 are the definition of 80s rock! Grateful to be born in 89 so at least I can say I was born in the same decade as the greatest album ever (1984)!!!! 😍
lets not forget that eddie and michael also took turns on the keyboard over the years. and eddie was the lead singer the first 4 years. but as above, david lee roth was the front man they needed to really break into the mainstream
Eddie and Alex Van Halen were born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Family moved to California when Eddie was 7or 8 years old. Dad was a jazz musician. Eddie is always in the conversation for best guitarist.
The info i have is that Eddie was born in Indonesia. Indonesian mother and Dutch father. van Halen is a dutch surname. They later moved to the Netherlands and then the US.
David Lee Roth is the singer. Eddie Van Halen is the guitarist. This song was off the 1984 album. They ended up kicking DLR out of the band and picking up Sammy Hagar as singer. Watch Eddie Van Halen Eruption (live) if you want to see how great of a guitarist he was. (RIP).
just to add to your comment, Alex Van Halen is the brother and drummer of the band. BP, you definitely need to react to Eruption. Eddie Van Halen is a guitar God, may he Rest In Peace.
Also, Eddie Van Halen randomly recorded the guitar solo on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and rearranged the song into how it ended up being released. The solo is listed among the greatest ever.
c'était pas au hasard c'est le grand Michael Jackson qui a fait appel à lui pour le solo car Michael choisissais les meilleurs comme Slash également étant lui même le plus grand artiste complet interplanétaire
“Jump” is a very popular sporting song. It is a staple at Detroit Pistons NBA games whenever a jump ball is called. Other sports teams have used this song over the years as well - such as the Chicago Cubs. Its also been used in TV and film.
I saw Black Sabbath in concert in 1979. The band opening for them was a no named band called Van Halen. Fell in love with this band since. Shit I’m old.
Yep - _BLEW_ BS off every stage, went from zero's to heroes overnight. Ruined things for UFO as well. Micheal Shenker tried to fight EVH backstage for ruining the tour 'cause HE wanted to be the guitar god and couldn't compete!
The band is Van Halen because it was founded by the two brothers Eddie (one of the greatest guitarists ever) and Alex the drummer. The original singer is David Lee Roth, he was later replaced. Listen to the live guitar-solo "Eruption" by Eddie van Halen live in 1986 and you will know why he is one of the greatest who ever picked up a guitar...
Van Halen was the most fun group to see live - David flying all over the stage and Eddie doing insane things on the guitar with a wall of Marshal amps behind him. RIP Mr Eddie Van Halen ❤
Most Millenials and Zoomers will never realize what a total package that Roth Van Halen was in concert --- a total feast for eyes, ears, and all other senses!
I was 17 when Jump was playing at the nightclub, and we girls did not have alcohol or anything else than water, no drugs, no cigarettes, and we danced from 12pm to 4pm on Friday night, just having good healthy fun!! Loved the 80’s!!❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Yeah, but you have to appreciate people taking the time to appreciate this music thats now 40 years old. That is the equivalent to you listening to music that came out in 1944, back in 1984. Crazy to think about that....
@@Wrangzilla I agree, I know a lot of "kids" in their 20s and 30s that love the older stuff. I was working with a young lady in her early 20s and "Magic Carpet Ride" came on the radio. Eddie was married to actress Valerie Bertinelli for 26 years and they had one son Wolfgang (Wolfie) who was bassist for Van Halen at the time of his death. RIP ELVH ❤
Yep, and Wolfie now has a band named Mammoth (which was the name of his father Eddie's first band before Van Halen) and he is also an exceptional writer/musician. You'll have to eventually get to him too and react to his music. RIP Eddie Van Halen. You are missed.
Smash hit!!!!! We jumped and screamed along with this song in sheer euphoria. David Lee Roth was always outrageous but this shows everyone at their best. So fun and infectious but the music is still so strong and fresh. I’m really impressed with the drums on this one today for some reason. The musicians in Van Halen were superb.
OmG me Too!! I lived at the skating rink in the 80’s!! Skated pretty well if I do say so myself! It was songs like this that encouraged us to skate the way we wanted!! If only we could go back!!
The ballad stuff is known to us as the Van Hagar Era. I love both because I love all genres and styles. Van Halen with Diamond David Lee Roth is definitely party music. Eddie had an extremely good (and unique) tone, which sets him apart and puts him up there with the GOATS. DLR was trained in martial arts but yes, flamboyant af. Yes this is the 80’s. This was our first song of the summer. Going to the pool first song they would play was jump and we all would jump in. lol summer memories so sweet.

Two words on Eddie Van Halen and the guitar GOAT.... Eruption solo. Also, the synth intro has been the walk out music to dozens of sports teams through the years... or a prequel to the walk out music.
Eddie and his brother, Alex, who's on drums, were born in Holland and the family moed to the US when Eddie was around 6 and Alex was a teen. Eddie was bullied for not speaking English & he said only the Balck kids were nice to him. They had moved to Pasadena, California. Yes, Eddie is one of the best guitarists and changed rock with their first album in '78. All the rockers in the 80s were doing a version of his guitar playing, like Jimi Hendrix in the 60s influenced everyone onward. They have a deep catalogue. This whole 1984 album is awesome as well as their first album, called Van Halen..and their other albums, too, lol.
Hi Pegasus, for me this song has been around forever and will always stand out as a classic..thank you Van Halen. And as a keyboard player that has played this track live a few times during my career I can tell you it has an irresistible effect on the crowd they just have to get up and move. And finally...yes that synth solo is a great part to show off playing! Keep up the great work.
The guitarist in the yellow jacket and the drummer are brothers. Eddie is the guitarist and Alex is the drummer.. Their surname is Van Halen and that's what they named their band. The name is Dutch, by the way.
This song turned 40 this year. Also the 40th reunion for my high school graduation. There was not a better decade to become a young adult in. The music was phenomenal!
Calling the band "Van Halen" was actually the singer's idea. David Lee Roth thought it would sound unusual and kind of mysterious, something like "Santana".
'Van Halen' is a name from Holland as the family migrated to the States when the boys were young. Drummer and Guitarist are the actual one's with the name. It's played EVERYWHERE...Sports Arenas and competitions of all kinds, Radio, Movies. Honestly, with much of the Classic Rock which often contains elements of other music genre; it was everywhere and remains commonly played as background in doctor's offices, and other places where it's hardly noticed. David Lee Roth...Saw him in the Van Halen Tours and he was one of the premier Frontmen of any band. He was a SHOWMAN and totally interesting to watch. God only knew what he was going to do as he was utterly uninhibited within reason.
Eddie Van Halen died in 2020 (may he rest in peace). He was acclaimed as one of the best guitarists. The guitar playing in this song is iconic. The lead singer was David Lee Roth.
after being in the 82nd airborne Div. it took me along time to be able to enjoy this song again due to hearing it everyday over the loud speakers during PT same goes for running with the devil
The guitarist is Eddie Van Halen (RIP) and his brother is on drums. The singer is David Lee Roth. He does all kinds of martial arts and is pretty badass. David Went and did his own music and when he left, they hired Sammy Hagar as their singer. Both singers were awesome in this band.
"cheerleading moves" --- ha! omg that cracked me up!! -- it's such a well produced song with a great message to keep on going regardless of the challenge and the video reflected the joy the band brought to their concerts... David Lee Roth was a great front man... thanks for the reaction
King Edward Van Halen came out playing guitar like this and changed how people looked at the instrument forever. It’s generally held that the only other guitar player who ever made such a big impact on guitar music was Jimi Hendrix. You should check out “Hot For Teacher”.
I was walking back to my dorm room in Spring 1984 when I heard this one for the 1st time, blasting out of someone's window at 100+ dB. It was a great time to be alive!
If you've seen the movie "Ready Player One", this is in it, and was used for at least one of the movie trailers. The brown haired guy in the yellow animal print jacket is Eddie Van Halen, and that guitar is his absolutely iconic guitar. He was married to Valerie Bertinelli, and their son Wolfgang has also been a band member since 2007. They've had a few lead singers, the most well known are David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar; this one is Roth, who was known for the flamboyant style. If you want to check out more on just Eddie himself, have a look at his Eruption Guitar Solo (Live in New Haven 1986) here on YT.
Eddie and Alex van Halen came with their parents in the 50s from the netherlands. Their father was a professional musician, too. A rumor around "Jump" is, that Eddie composed it on a piano, not guitar.
The song has been used in probably a half dozen movies over the years. Most notably it was playing during the opening of Ready Player One since you mentioned the opening of a movie, I bet that's where you heard it. I've also heard bits of it played during basketball games for obvious reasons.
He's in the top of the best guitarist of all time list..Eddie was a monster on guitar and really brought tapping into the forefront of guitar work. RIP Eddie, you're sorely missed..
Eddie Van Halen is on guitar. His brother Alex is on drums. They created the band Van Halen in California. Amazing albums in the 70’s and 80’s. For a phenomenal display of guitar talent check out Van Halen’s song Eruption in its live performance. Eddie tears it up!
I met Michael Anthony years ago at our “Run To The Sun” car show held here every year and he was such an awesome and friendly guy. Eddie Van Halen with surely be missed!
They introduce the players coming out on the court before pro basketball games to this song. And the singer was a marshal artist hence the kicks and jumps
Most popular was when the Chicago Cubs used this as their theme song in 1984...they had a great season and alot of great players...you knew everyone...was so fun to watch
Love all the comments giving the deets coz I know the song so well, but absolutely _nothing_ about the band. My two older brothers exposed me to some of the greatest music (I'm an eighties baby) and had all the records - but y'know, when you're four years old, none of it really sticks ;) I hate it when people judge you for your ignorance - you never know what or how or why the circumstances. Thanks to everyone helping us get up to speed
The Van Halen Brothers were born in Amsterdam. Their mother was Indonesian. I swear Eddie and his Wife Valerie Bertinelli looked like brother and sister when they were young. They have a son who also plays guitar. His name is Wolfgang Van Halen. Is mom calls him Wolfie for short. It was sad that he died in 2020 and it just doesn’t seem right. He’s the worlds best guitar player ever bar none. The guitar he’s playing is basically his Frankenstein. He ended up creating a zone guitars and he does techniques that nobody did at that time, but people have painstakingly tried to copy him since. David Lee Roth never played any instruments, but he did have his own band after this he left Van Halen in 1985. It had his old bed for a while. After David Lee Roth left another really great singer came on the scene in Sammy Hagar and he’s had great success with many different bands. Chicken foot Montrose Band named after him Sammy Hagar. He was known as the red rocker. He is definitely worth checking out in every form or fashion that he’s ever done music in. I seen him in concert with Van Halen and I’ve listen to his music for many years he started out the 70s. Montros, I believe was his first band at least the one where he first started making note. I’m glad you’re playing the stuff for my day. Best one off the album in my opinion was just about tied with jump but I have a reason that it’s more my favorite and that would be Panama.
Those opening notes you instantly recognised were played on a keyboard. This song gives you a very small taste of how good Eddie was on guitar. If you watch the live version of Eruption - guitar solo , from the Live Without A Net concert you will understand why he is referred to as King Edward.
I was 8 in 1984 when this came out. I saved up my allowance and bought this on cassette..... So far in life, i've owned the "1984" album on cassette, CD, and vinyl.
I don't know if you know this, but Edward Van Halen, the guitarist of Van Halen, is the one who created the guitar solo and the riff of Michael Jackson's Beat It song. Eddie is a master of his craft and has created many great guitar solos.
Check out Def Leppard. Songs Pour some Sugar on Me, Animal, Rocket. Their drummer got into an automobile accident. Lost one of his arms and came back to play the drums without any major issues
Eddie also played the keyboard intro. One of my fav concerts was February 14, 1983 at the Charlotte Coliseum. They were dressed just about like this... I was about 15' from the stage
I grew up listening to Van Halen. I still love them to this day. Eddie Van Halen is by far one of the best guitarists ever. His passing still stings. You must listen to the album Women and Children First, the song Take Your Whiskey Home is amazing. The song Unchained amazing, Everybody Wants Some another great song. I could go on. So glad you’re checking them out!! Enjoy.
my mother met David Lee Roth a year or so before she passed when they stayed a week at the bed & breakfast she worked at, they were looking for a quiet place to lay low for a few days and well..... Keyser, West Virginia just happened to be the perfect place. The Candlewyk Inn is where she worked. She said he was one the the chillest people she'd ever met.

*David Lee Roth* the lead singer wasn't a cheerleader but does *kenjutsu, kenpō & Brazilian jiu-jitsu*
It's crazy how this dude thinks DLR learned those kicks from "cheerleading" --- you need many years of karate and jiu-jitsu to get that good
...and Shaolin kung fu as a kid.
He trained with _Benny The Jet_ - there's a credit to him on VH 2.

Went to a concert in Fresno in the 80’s what a show they had the speakers that David Lee Roth jumped on one after another to the top of the venue.
The sound was probably heard at the beginning of sporting events, like hockey!
Google Les Paul.
@@randal_gibbons We can add Tom Scholz too....... bingo!
I was walking back to my dorm room in Spring 1984 when I heard this one for the 1st time, blasting out of someone's window at 100+ dB. It was a great time to be alive!
You could literally listen to every song in the David Lee Roth era, you'll love all of them.
I'm having a great time watching your reactions. You're pulling up stuff I grew up with. Warms my heart that ya like it.
Honestly, there's nothing other than you've heard the hook and loved it immediately
Check out Hot For Teacher next! Great video! Super fun song… Eddie and Alex are amazing!
Definitely worth going down this rabbit
DLR was so cool and hot. By far the most fit person in rock n roll history. Or definitely in top 3!
I never heard a woman in my life say that Sammy Hagar was hot --- but I remember hundreds of ladies in the 80's saying Dave was sexy as hell

My favorite band. Ever. This is my teenage years.
Eddie Van Halen is one of the best guitarist. U should checkout his solo EDDIE VAN HALEN ERUPTION...❤❤❤
Eddie and Alex van Halen came with their parents in the 50s from the netherlands. Their father was a professional musician, too. A rumor around "Jump" is, that Eddie composed it on a piano, not guitar.
I loved Eddie Van Halen..one of the most amazing guitarists that ever lived ❤
This bamd put on the damn best concerts ive ever been to. This 1 included .
For me nothing says a party in the 80’s better than VH Jump!
They introduce the players coming out on the court before pro basketball games to this song. And the singer was a marshal artist hence the kicks and jumps
Eruption by Eddie is a good one to listen to
Most popular was when the Chicago Cubs used this as their theme song in 1984...they had a great season and alot of great players...you knew everyone...was so fun to watch
Not the riff that was Steve Lukather.
@@anthonyv6962 Thank you, I knew the solo was him but wasn't quite sure of the riff.
One of our fav song to skate to back in the 80s lol
1984! My senior year! Sounds like glory to me!
Check out Def Leppard. Songs Pour some Sugar on Me, Animal, Rocket. Their drummer got into an automobile accident. Lost one of his arms and came back to play the drums without any major issues
I lived it man. 70's 80's WOW
Eddie also played the keyboard intro. One of my fav concerts was February 14, 1983 at the Charlotte Coliseum. They were dressed just about like this... I was about 15' from the stage
The Van Halen brothers were immigrants from the Netherlands. Literally came with nothing except a musical father and became icons for the ages.
Favorite band of all time. They have so many iconic songs. I’d love to see your reactions to Panama, Ain’t talkin bout Love, Unchained, among others
I love watching your reactions to the good ole rock and roll we grew up with
1984 Chicago Cubs introduction song, it played every game. In person and on TV. OH the memories
One of many of my favorite songs from them.
Enjoy.
Favorite song of theirs… Love Walks In
Definitely check out Panama :). When I went skydiving I had it video’d and they used this song for the backing track. Friggin incredible!
Their album Women and children first was the first one I ever bought...I absolutely LOVE Van Halen❤❤❤❤❤❤
We had the best music and movies in the 80's. I love being born in the 70's and raised in the 80's. Best ever
my mother met David Lee Roth a year or so before she passed when they stayed a week at the bed & breakfast she worked at, they were looking for a quiet place to lay low for a few days and well..... Keyser, West Virginia just happened to be the perfect place. The Candlewyk Inn is where she worked. She said he was one the the chillest people she'd ever met.
They play the intro to this at every basketball game!
