Watching this series of videos makes me laugh when we limit out every day we make the eight hour travel up to the river every year. We don’t even bother with keeping kings now we catch so many steelhead and coho

    Been Chinook fishing for 26 years. You're getting the same results as most of the rest of us! Some years you're lucky to get even one. This year I put in seven dawn-to-dusk trips and caught only one --that was too dark to bother keeping. Try fishing for them over here in the PNW... at the very least you'll have some stunning B-roll!

    Kayak fishing for salmon in the salt is super fun. I like to get them before they run up the rivers. They’re still attacking prey, and the eating quality of the fish is superior. After years of salmon fishing the only thing I know about chinook is I don’t know anything about what makes them bite. I’ll go a week with them having lockjaw, and then everything turns on and the fishing is so easy it should be illegal. Tight lines Robert

    Lol, its okay Robert, new anglers to this is hard at first. You learn along the way after fishing tons of them over the years, you dont horse them in, and they will do dash runs when you think theyre ready. And when they are ready, they will float sideways, just slide them in, always head first. They will often pop spoons or jigs on the drop, it happens to me quite frequently. A lot of adrenaline on your first couple if hookups lol.

    For future reference you can legally gaff fish in Wisconsin if they are hooked in the mouth. No spear gaffs (kage) within 200 feet of a dam though. Carrying a big enough net in a kayak is a bit tricky.

    I have never laughed so hard. We all remember learning to salmon fish. This was really entertaining. You need to learn how to use the proper hooks with your eggs and drifting the presentation correctly, as well as using known productive lures for casting as it is very difficult. Lures such as a brads killerfish during the day, and a jointed j-13 rapala in firetiger in lowlight morning and evening. the killerfish can have fish-meat magic threaded to the lure for added scent. Can't wait to see some more like this one. And no need to tell you to bring the correct sized net, the lure can get high sided in a rubber net just as easy as a rope just make sure your hoop and handle fit the situation. Thumbs up!

    Egg patterns works great while fly fishing for them. They also have "egg sacks" that you can drift which have a smell and color to them. The salmon want their eggs to carry on and will attack another's egg!

    Try throwing a Vibrax if they are hitting mid to high, or a Mepps Flying C if they are deeper. In my experience Coho and Chinook are going to find a nice hole and relax, bumping their way up stream to spawn. The deeper the action on your lure the better. Eggs on a bobber are decent because you can run two rods but never only run a bobber. I grew up pulling them on a pixee spoon, but vibrax and flying Cs beat em out any day IMO. It depends on the terrain or the bed too,for example if you throw a flying c but keep getting snagged you won't be catching fish.

    • @austinholm-mcrae2777
      @austinholm-mcrae2777 4 года назад

      That's rough though man. I personally pulled 29 coho on a rod and reel this year alone, not including other fishing I did as well. I'm born and raised in Alaska and know a thing or two about salmon so hmu eh?

    • @austinholm-mcrae2777
      @austinholm-mcrae2777 4 года назад

      Salmon will hit eggs on a bobber hundred of miles upstream on their spawning run, and swallow them. At least in AK, it's believed that feeding behavior changes drastically when running. They are still indeed opportunistically feeding, meaning the more time your lure is in the water, maintaining action, covering water, statistically the better your odds to drag it across ones face and enticing the bite.

    • @austinholm-mcrae2777
      @austinholm-mcrae2777 4 года назад

      Feeding behavior changes, but is still present. Hence the myth. They devote all resources running to spawn, but they don't shut down feeding processes completely. They don't devote any more resources to the procurement of food, but they still feed

I went to a trip for 5 days and had 150-200 lbs tarpons rolling around me, but no matter what I throw in the water (mullets, crabs, etc), they dont bite. Those videos keep us in touch with reality, everyone catch a big fish on youtube, but it is not always the case in real life. So, keep those videos coming.
    P.S. that salmon was almost in the net, it might be easier to gaff him actually, but there is no “if” in fishing lol
