  • Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD and PD are distinct diseases, but they share some similarities. To help clarify both the differences and overlaps between the two diseases, we talked with Dr. Claire Sexton, Senior Director of Scientific Programs & Outreach at the Alzheimer’s Association.
    We learned:
The similarities and differences between the pathology of AD and PD
The differences between the cognitive challenges of AD and those of PD
The new treatments available for AD and their relevance to PD
If it’s possible for someone to have both diseases
    1:48 Dr. Sexton’s talk
24:09 What's the connection between Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease in terms of recent therapies and biomarkers?
28:50 How often do people have both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease pathology in their brain?
30:35 What is Lewy body dementia vs Parkinson’s disease dementia?
32:44 Can you talk about the controversy surrounding the approval of anti-amyloid therapies? Are these therapies safe?
39:15 How do scientists who work on Parkinson’s and scientists who work on Alzheimer’s collaborate?
41:50 Why has the PD research community made so little progress?

Thank you for all you do. I am an occupational therapist. In addition to and aside from this, we have 4 males on the same side of the family, year of birth spanning from ~1922 thru 1967 with Parkinson's. My brother, has early over PD, superimposed on Gaucher's disease. He believes he has already experienced visual hallucinations. I am grateful to everyone who supports the cause either with donations, research or lobbying. Thank you
