    Thank you. We so appreciate it. No one helped my grandfather. He died of it. It was so terrible. No doctor suggested any nutritional improvement. Now I’m trying to get my elderly mom to reform her nutrition to arrest type 3 diabetes and she declines. I have reformed my diet to high saturated fat very low carb in young enough attempt to avoid these.

    I find it amazing that our healthcare system has been so taken over by pharmaceuticals that we're left to do the real health experiments and research ourselves. I have never been given info by a doctor, just prescriptions. My info sadly comes from RUclips and Facebook.

      I agree! I don't trust drs anymore! It makes me angry to see that a dr prescribed Tramadol for a friend with PD, Tramadol blocks the neurotransmitters, its scary what drs prescribe, they don't care what happens to you! 😢

This is a phenomenal presentation which deserves to be viewed widely in the Parkinson’s community and beyond.     People close to me have parkinson. Even though this is very easy to test. It’s nearly impossible to convince people to try it. Very frustrating 😢

    Thank you Bill, your talk has inspired me. I'm 15 months into my diagnosis and only just started on Levodopa (2 days ago). Dipped my toe into fasting, 3 days a week 6pm-10am but was was stuck in a paradigm that my exercise should be fairly gentle in a fasted state.
    I'm now going to try extending the fasts to 12 noon. I also just tried my first 'high intensity' fasted exercise and was surprised just how hard I was able to train.
    Thank you so much for sharing your experience and such a fascinating research paper.

      Mark,
      I think humans are made to run for a long time on the ketone bodies produced from fats in the liver. These ketone bodies assure that our brain gets fed when we exercise for long periods of time. It is an amazing system. I am not surprised you were able to exercise well in the fasted state. Thanks for your insights.

      I am not able to take any meds so found your videos and started keto diet 4 weeks ago and added the morning exercises yesterday. Do I also need to add the Ketone Esters? How strictly do I follow the keto diet…I feel like I may be eating to many proteins sometimes.     Amazing and informative 🙌! I’m a functional nutritionist and health and wellness GFI and personal trainer. Studied neurodegenerative diseases under Dr. Dale Bredesen and Dr. Daniel Amen, also studied cell biology:mitochondria with Harvard. Your hypothesis lines up with Dr. Bredesen’s theory in slowing/reversing AD. Only difference is testing the body for toxins (and detoxing), I would LOVE to see how the trial results after removal of possible cause (we know pesticides/herbicides have a suspected link😔). Thank you for being a pioneer in looking for a non pharmaceutical solution 🙏. God Bless.

      I am so glad you have taken up this approach. I was surprised when Dr. Bredesen's book came out that his approach was similar to what I had stumbled upon through trial and error and reading about the bodies methods of maintaining healthy cells. This same approach was in Dr. Bredesen's book on Alzheimer's. There is definitely a growing consensus that diet, circadian rhythms, exercise, sleep and avoiding toxins can be managed together to get some positive results. Your point about toxins is well taken. I would recommend your approach to treating Parkinson's. There are too few people addressing these issues. The medical profession is coming around, but they don't have the advantage of the training you have received. Also, there needs to be more clinical studies that address combinations of treatments together. Thank you.

      @@thefourthfoodgroup2131 AMEN…unfortunately the pharmaceutical companies own our top medical schools and teaching and promotion of nutrition isn’t something they can patient so their is very little funding available. Dr. Terry Wahl seems to be getting grants. She used a similar protocol to reverse her MS….

    Fascinating work! Prior to the commercial availability of ketone esters you said you used only the buttered coffee and got good results. That being said, is the ketone ester drink essential? Did you reduce the butter, cream and coconut oil after you started using the ketone ester?

    Very nice presentation, congratulations on being a principle author. At 66 I’m trying not to get Parkinson’s and have put some effort into diet and exercise. I had come to similar conclusions although not thru scientific rigor . It seems fasted aerobic exercise in the morning works to improve many biophysical markers .. lipids, CRP, BDNF, BP, T and on and on. About 5 years ago I went plant based for lipid control (my lipids react badly to saturated fat) so I won’t be adding saturated fat prior to exercise unless I start to experience Parkinson’s symptoms. So, thank you for expanding my armory … I’ll keep butter/cream/coconut oil in reserve. I do keep carbs low and protein “adequate” [i run 6k/day AM, and CrossFit 3day/week].. being plant based I keep methionine and lucine low (anti cancer). So, your efforts are greatly appreciated .. I feel I have a weapon in reserve. I hope your success continues.

    At what point in your journey were you able to reduce your medications? My sister has PD, in the last two years I've gotten her to go lower carb and she's dropped over 100#, but the disease is still progressing. She can't shop for herself & I've eliminated most simple carbs from her diet. I'm showing her your video today. When she does manage to get a hold of carbs they really throw her for a loop with tremors etc.

    1. Have u ever tried a shorter fasting period like 12 hours? If so, what was your finding?
    2. The K4 ketone ester is recommended by manufacturer to be consumed on an empty stomach, I assume prior to the buttered coffee. Any thoughts on this order (ketone first, coffee next, then exercise)?
    3. I believe you use 10 ml. of ketone ester prior to morning exercise. I can start the same. But how would I know the right amount for me, could be lower or higher? What am I supposed to feel to determine the optimal amount?
    4. Is it fair to say the longer the morning exercise similar to your video on the stationary bike at say 20 minutes, the better?
    5. Is there an on-going clinical trial that people can join in?
    Appreciate all your work and your help to help others.

      Hi,
      I found that it is not as important what hour I stop eating as when I start back up. By this I mean that if I fast for 12 hours from midnight to noon, I find about the same benefit as a 16 hour fast. However, if I fast from 6 PM to 6 AM, also a 12 hour fast, it really does not work.
      You raise a good question about the empty stomach. Having an empty stomach is not the critical factor. Not eating carbs with the ketone ester is the critical factor. I take the ketone ester after I have the coffee. There are no carbs in the coffee.

    I'm a farmer.
    Sheep and goat dairy goathere we go. It's hard for me to understand the scientific aspect of this RUclips. If I could just get a diet for myself. I do a lot of hard exercise in the morning. Feeding putting out hay, cleaning medications for the animals. Milkit's only me except one kid comes to help me.And I do have my coffee I was having a very large breakfast. And now I only have coffee and I have a lot more energy to stay out there until 2 o'clock. That's when I usually have my lunch and I need to take my other Leva dopa but I need to know what I can do to alleviate the horrible off medtime in the afternoon as I still have work on the farm to do.

      You probably already know this, but just in case: You mentioned eating your lunch around two, and it sounds like it's your first meal of the day, so I imagine it's huge and lots of protein. For some people, protein greatly interferes with their absorption of carbidopa-levodopa, because it competes in the gut for the same transporters used for some amino acids. So, it is best to take your levodopa at least 30-60 minutes before a high-protein meal, so it can get a head start on absorption and not have to compete with the protein for transporters in your gut. Carry it in your pocket and take it at least 1/2 hour before going in for lunch.

    How can one get in contact with you? I have been independently following a similar protocol with additional interventions. My disease appears and feels to be almost completely gone. I am weaning off of Azilect which is my only symptomatic treatment other than supplements.
    Are you familiar with Dr. Goodenowe’s plasmalogen work? And Dr. Ana Maria Cuervo work on autophagy in PD?

We spoke at a conference on NAD last year and I have given away perhaps 30 copies of his book to Alzheimer's researchers. For those that might be interested in plasmalogens Dr. Goodenowe's company, prodrome.com is the place to go for testing and supplements. I think it is more important in Alzheimer's than PD, but there was a primate study that showed relief from dyskinesia, which seems to be my only symptom that the protocol I use does not help. I only know Dr. Cuervo from her papers. However, your comment led me to add about 30 of her papers to my reading list. Thanks.

      Wow, Sir I just came across your channel and multiple videos, I am hoping and praying that they will be of some benefit to me as I am several years into a horrible battle for my life with what I call a demon straight out of the pit of hell itself called, ( Oromandibular Dystonia, ) that has taken away most of my ability to speak, chew and swallow !!!
      I am actually dealing multiple forms of Dystonia such as the OD plus general Dystonia, cervical Dystonia and cranial Dystonia !!!

    I love your video, it is inspiring. Thank you for doing all the research. I HAVE A QUESTION: how can this be done without losing weight? Keto diet + Interm. Fasting is great for losing weight. My sister has PD since 2000 and is still ok, although it has still been progressing slowly. She is naturally a thin person in spite of having a healthy appetite, but she is now even thinner (maybe too thin) because of PD, perhaps trembling burns more calories. How can she apply this protocol without losing weight? Perhaps be eating a lot of fat (nuts, seeds, coffee…) calories, >3,000 calories/day. But would that adversely affect her getting into and staying in ketosis?

      Delsi, I am not an expert in nutrition. I would contact one of the nutritionists who work with the Charlie foundation or Miriam Kalamian and some of the people she has mentored. They will probably have your sister put what she eats into the program chronometer. They will then be sure that she is getting adequate protein and fat and carbohydrates. You can eat all the vegetables you want.
      I also think that the exercise should help her put on muscle mass. I am not recommending a ketogenic diet. The ketosis comes from fasting and kickstarting ketosis in the morning with some fats. You don't have to stay in ketosis all the time. I don't know of anyone who tried the protocol who had an issue with losing weight as muscle. If someone has had a problem I would appreciate hearing from them. Obviously you will not be able to store a lot of fat.

      John, I don't know if the coffee is important or not. Do you drink hot drinks? You could try tea or some of the drinks Mormons use in place of coffee. I just looked up what is in Postum. It appears it is made from wheat, wheat bran and molasses. I don't think you want to try something made of molasses. I suppose you could just eat the fats. There are several hot drinks that are coffee alternatives such as green tea, chicory, mate, and dandelion coffee. I don't know how these would go down if you added the fats to these drinks.

      The dietary ketones are not found in food. Our bodies make them out of fatty acids. However, the ketones are available in dietary supplements. I take ketoneaid, KE4. I get it from Ketoneaid.com. If you are in Europe, there is another web site TheFeed.com. Historically I have also taken deltaG available at TDeltaS.com.

    The high fat in the morning works . When you eat protein you must match it with fat or it will convert to glucose . 1 gram of fat with every gram of protein. Chicken is very low fat.

      Hi,
      I think you raise a very good point about carbs in general. I would like to say you also bring up a great question which is, "Can I eat something other than Coffee with fat in the morning?"
      I am going to suggest that it would not work to eat protein and carbs in the morning because any glucose consumption will lower your NADplus and interrupt a key mechanism. However, protein and carbs are great when you are not fasting. For those who need some protein in the morning, you might try one or two eggs instead of or in combination with the coffee. BUT NO CARBS FOR BREAKFAST!

    I am 66 and have lost muscle due to sarcopenia and am taking lots of protein and doing daily resistance exercises to build back my muscles. So what do I do? Cut down protein and allow more atrophy?🤔

      Well I was just diagnosed last year at 38 years old (symptoms longer than that). So I’m not too far along in my journey, but so far results have been positive. I fast 6pm - 12pm. I do wonder sometimes if I could push exercising even harder after the coffee and ester, but sticking with what works for now

    Rips Univ did a podcast featuring Colleen Cutliffe, Ph.D. discussing the gut microbiome and its probable role in disease. Akkermansia is one of the issues I’ve read in PD research. It might be worth your while to listen to that podcast.

    This all sounds good for people who don't have an APOE4 gene. They are not advised to eat a Keto /high fat diet. This restriction isn't needed
    for APOE2 or APOE3 genetic mutations. Also, people with Cardoivascular, Gallbladder , some Liver issues and or low weight / Ectomorphic
    body types don't seem to do well on these diets.

    Hello. I was able to reverse the expression of Parkinson’s on my mom, who was in early stage Parkinson’s. She’s not on Rx. But she does take supplements. I’m trying to help a friend who also has early stage Parkinson’s.
    I’m good at body science but my auditory comprehension is poor. Would you have this video in written form? If so, may I please read from it?

      @@bahaar2825 this is very abbreviated, daily cross body movement exercises, IF, and particular therapeutic-grade essential oils for the brain. I’m a yoga therapist specialized in PTSD. For PTSD recovery, goal is to establish new communication pathways of nervous system, away from default pathways. I apply that to retired people too, and to my mom. It’s important your exercises cross your midline. I found out my mom added supplements. She’s a retired ICU and psychiatric nurse. I ace’d premed, and utilize that as a yoga therapist. If you do the butter coffee, the only tweak I have is: ghee rather than standard butter. Also, keep as much organic as possible. My mom’s health significantly improved all around by moving to a country that didn’t have to label organic foods as ‘organic’, unlike the USA.

      Many diabetics use a ketogenic diet to reverse their diabetes. See RUclips videos by Dr. Ken Berry or Dr. Eric Westman among many, many others.

    Keto can work, but doctors are ignorant on how to do it long term. Ignorant on how to keep ketones high. Ignorant on the fact that protein is not a problem. 100 grams of protein is fine.

      Only if you do it wrong. It's very easy to eat eggs, bacon, beef, water, and salt. Some won't do the water and salt, and then they have to stop because carbs hold water. Sodium actually absorbs water beter.

      Hi ChrisH. That is a great question. I tried to answer it in this video, ruclips.net/video/7aW-QoekDPg/видео.html
      The short answer is that fats don't take you from the classical fasted state to the fed state. Excess protein or carbs do switch one over. This is why I think the switch from a high fat breakfast to one based on sugar is so insidious. In the fasted state one produces glucagon in the pancreas. In the fed state one produces insulin in the pancreas. When the insulin is produced it tells cells to open glucose transporters. The glucose enters the cells. Glycolysis commences which consumes NAD+.
      (The NAD+ is needed so that the 24 electrons in glucose have somewhere to go other than directly to oxygen as they do in a fire.) NAD+ accepts two electrons to become NADH. This breaks the positive feedback loop caused by SIRT1 activating BMAL1.

      @@Kristenh02 You are correct. eventually the glycerol from lipids will be used to make glucose and that may shift your pancreas from making glucagon to making insulin. At least that is the biochemical pathway. I don't know what would actually happen to your glucagon and insulin levels in response to gluconeogenesis from glycerol. Mark Mattson is the recognized expert in fasting. He was a coauthor on the paper. So, if you can't follow the biochemistry at least you can rely on the opinion of the scientist who has thousands of citations and is regarded as an authority.
