Quick tip for mixed voice: sing lighter

- I spent so much time trying to sound round, beefy, trying to be Dio, trying to be Bruce Dickinson, and I was always pushing and straining and yelling to get to notes.
Once my vocal coaches convinced me to work on my head voice, rely on that more, practice it, get it stronger, I finally unlocked mixed voice.
if you never allow yourself to sing lightly, allow yourself to be mellow and soft during your practice, it will be hard to find mixed voice.
it's not a competition, allow yourself to be light, singing in mixed voice feels more like singing in falsetto than singing in yelled chest voice. get used to that flexible feeling. Развлечения

😂
it's crazy, but so many people I see on youtube never actually demonstrate what mixed voice sounds like, and I get 10x more confused on how to do it
I do it in most of my videos, but what it sounds like can be very misleading, it's more important imo how it feels like and how to get there -- like starting falsetto and adding just enough compression to make sure you get CT muscles engagement
Cheers!
You sure do know your stuff brother I wish you success.
Thanks!!! I appreciate the support
i feel like i’m cheating i’ve had to learn this stuff on my own by sounding shit for ages. wish i took some youtube advice ages ago would’ve been much better by now
This is exactly what I needed to hear and I'm feeling way more confident with my mixed voice now. Even small tips can change your mindset and help with mental barriers. Thank you man!
Yes the mindset changes are everything imo

As far as I know Jesus was not white he didnt have long hair and blue eyes 👀. … he got long white hair after he was resurrected
This light singing tip works wonders! Thing is, mixed voice should not feel as difficult as a simple falsetto although more energized. Although mine is still unstable, but this enables me to hit notes that are initially impossible for me without falsetto with not much fatigue. Thanks mate!
Yeah it shouldn't be just a falsetto, but starting from there and building the resonance rather than starting from chest and just trying to take it up which causes strain
Cheers!
@@LeoMaiaProg that’s what I did, and I got results. I strengthened my falsetto, then it started to get heavier. Now I can easily blend them, but it doesn’t sound good yet.
@@lemagicbaguette1917 look into vowels next, it's vowels and resonances that make it sound good!
@@LeoMaiaProg thanks)
Ingenious tips as always! Much love from Lithuania
Light and bright.
Might!
I don’t sing enough light voice. I’m a musical theater singer. I wanna sing opera. I want volume and power. But I train my mix/head voice trying for that power and it just gets irritated and feels scratchy.
The problem with that mindset is that you might overfocus on power and volume and end up shouting / blasting too much air out, where loudness can come from resonance instead of sheer air pressure
The point of the video is to allow a mindset shift that you don't need to blast so much air, get used to singing light first, as being light makes it easier to engage CT muscles and work head voice into the mixed voice, to find the right vowel shapes that places the resonance in the right spot, then as you add just a bit of pressure to get into full voice, you get loud and resonant without blowing out by shouting. If you use too much air pressure the TA muscles will dominate and make the vocal chords very thick and that pills back your head voice and you get into a chest dominance rather than go into mix
It's not about just singing light all the time, but about letting the mindset of allowing yourself to explore those coordinations that happen when you're singing lighter, si that you can incorporate that into mixed voice rather than getting stuck into chest voice because we don't want to even practice without being powerful and loud
I was completely in that position for a long time and strained to get to F#/G4 and shouted to get to a terribly sounding B4, now I hit C5s, D5s, E5s with no strain
Yeah I won't sing light like this in a actual rock song, but I'll start form that mindset and make sure my CT muscles are super engaged and then add just enough pressure to get into full voice rather than starting from thickness and trying to blast even more air pressure to get higher
I hope it makes sense
@@LeoMaiaProg Yes, it does. Thanks so much for the reply. As an impatient baritone, I’m just trying to tame that passagio/mixed voice beast so I can sing the way I’ve always wanted. And your videos are super helpful. Thank you on behalf of all the singers you’re helping.
This is so so true.
Cheers!
Thumbs up! The need to sound "manly", so as to get the approval of narrow minded people, is a killer
Not to mention the people you think sounds super manly actually don't sound that manly when you take away the band and the production.
So many people say "I wanna sing chesty in my high range" which is so counter intuitive as you need less and less chest as you go up in pitch, but people are saying that because they want to sound big, full, robust, manly etc, even when singing high, as if singing high with head voice is "cheating" or not winning some sort of unspoken competition
Yes brother more of this idea please!

Awesome to hear!
Such an excellent video. Thank you.
I'm glad you like it
but when I go soft it’s such a dramatic change to my normal voice so it doesn’t sound good
That's why you don't practice it? That's why I didn't practice it. But when I allowed myself to start from that voice that I didn't like until I liked it is the key of this tip here.
Adding resonance and some thickness to head voice is way easier than adding stretch, lightness and flexibility to your chest voice. At least for me, when I tried to start from chest, I just kept yelling and yelling to go higher with my thickness rather than letting go of my thickness earlier
Ok people always looking for how to sing in each register (head voice, falsetto, whistle register, chess voice) but they never looking into *SUPPORT* more. Like having SUPPORT is really underrated. For to able to have good technique you need to have support.😑🙄
I think support is overrated tbh, people tend to put it as the root of all problems and for long it made me feel like all I needed to do was push from my belly and then everything would be solved
But in the end, support is just about maintaining a proper airflow and keeping pressure away from your throat, keeping your belly expanded rather than clenching your abs and bursting air up. Thinking "push from your belly" can lead to overcompression and yelling and pulling chest
Yes support is important as proper airflow is important, but it's not the fix for everything, if you're not running out of air as you sing you're probably having decent support, but decent support without proper placement, proper usage of vowels / vocal tract shape, proper engagement of the CT muscles, etc, is not going to be the magic pill that the internet makes it appear to be

Thank you 🎉
You're welcome!
I just came from a video that told me to first learn to shout the mixed voice 😂😂😂 in other words, the exact opposite 😂
Idk where people come from, but in my world when you shout, the TA muscles engage fully and overpowers the CT muscles. Starting from a light falsetto and adding power little by little, just enough, is how I find myself not shouting and actually singing in mixed voice
That was phil moufarrege wasn't it? I swear man, half of the youtube vocal coach people don't actually know what they're talking about, its like they're relying solely on their personal experiences and expecting you to have the same experience as them.
Idk how to differentiate my voice whether i sing with a light voice or mixed voice. My so called mixed voice sounds nothing like other singers do. It sound like mickey mouse 😭
Then it's falsetto, the mixed voice would have a cry engagement to it that makes it fuller and less airy. Try this: ruclips.net/user/shortsEPD9X1brvJE?feature=share
Dude I had the same problem FOREVER and I thought it was mixed voice for the longest time but I hated it. Its definitely not mixed voice, and anyone who says so is crazy. What has helped me is going up and down over the break with: 1. lip trills 2.blowing through a straw 3. Puffing out my cheeks and letting just a small amount of air out while going up and down. Doing these over and over helped me get an idea of how to connect the head and chest. It's kind of a big experiment. You kinda have to learn to lean into the air to create notes. I can't guarantee success, but it's gotten me a lot closer! I can lip trill up and down without a break, so now I gotta integrate it into singing.
Nice tips
Glad you like it!
you're beautiful.

In my chest voice I can literally barely hit a C#5 but in my mixed voice I can literally go higher than an Eb5. Such a big change.

Hello Leo, I’m from Viet Nam - a big fan of you and your voice, first thing i wanna say “thank you so much” because your tip is really helpful and meaningful, i now can sing, make my voice lighter but when i’m try ing to hit high note, use chesty mix to make it more powerful like you sang, i often break into falsetto, is my head voice too weak? And can you share some exercises to warm up mixed voice or strengthen it gradually ?
Many thanks and best wishes!
Hi, it's not about being weak, there's no muscle to build up there, you have the strength you need, it's coordination that you have to work on. Have you tried different vowels for example? Try just vowels and no consonants first, think about your resonance placement and try out different things
A good mindset is that you need to first get your head voice to sound nice on its own, work on chord closure (squeaky door exercise and cry tone) and make the space you need with the right vowel shape, once your head voice sounds nice on its own then you try to mix
soft and mellow unless you are doing opera, we dark all day haha
Always under cover if you got what I mean 😂
That what I was missing

Yep!
I'm a male and I can't even hit c4 without yelling. Should I practice mix first or should I try to expand my full chest voice range first?
Imo the mindset of "trying to expand chest" is flawed. It never worked for me. You can't train the muscle to get stronger, it's not how it works, you train your muscle memory instead. If you keep straining and yelling you'll reinforce bad habits into your muscle memory. I suggest working in head voice soon after you've had the basics for chest voice down, like support, forward placement and such
@@LeoMaiaProg Thanks for your response.
Ngl I have been trying to expand my chest voice range and it didn't work.
It only strained my throat.
I'll try to follow your advice.
Sir the problem is think my mixed voice is too deep
So use head voice earlier!
But I have naturally high voice even if I sing in chest voice, I sing like a dying goat already ahhahahah
Well then some vowel placement can help you sound rounder if that's what You're looking for
Any tips on how to get it louder and thicker after you've gotten the softer version down?
Vowel modification and cry!
O problema que eu tenho é que cantar leve parece que sempre deixa a minha voz parecendo meio boba tipo Mickey mouse ou algo assim 😂

@@LeoMaiaProg valeu! Conheci agora o canal e achei muito bom!
thanks! also, how do i balance it? i sometimes sound more head than chest, and i don’t like it
It's about chord closure, vocal tract shape, right vowels etc. The larynx dropping and fuller sound is a consequence of proper placement
Some of the videos I have here like raising soft palate, squeaky door exercise, cry tone among others can help with that. But it's NOT by adding more chest, it's by shaping the tone of the head imo (well I haven't heard you and depends on what range were taking about but that's what worked for me)
When I try to go lighter I get undertones/fry 😭
That means you're probably not using the right resonances and register balances when you go harder. It's important to get the right smooth balance lighter so that when you go harder you just intensify the right coordination rather than forcing the wrong coordination to achieve your singing
yes
Jon Anderson is a great light singer for sure 😂

Im not sure if I’m singing in mix…my voice is naturally high for a 19 going on 20 year old female…people mistake me as a 12 year old 💀💀💀 idk if i can send you videos of me singing
What matters is singing comfortably with the tone you want, registers are just labels and don't matter to the actual sound!
@@LeoMaiaProgyou can my channel for the recent videos i posted…idk if it’s mixed…I’ve been working on mixed voice since December of 2023…its June 8th now
I'm a low baritone............ naturally my voice is lil harsh....... whenever I try to sing soft and light, it limits my rangs I can't hit the high notes with that soft voice...........for me, light voice works for falsetto but ruin my belting.............if there's any solution lemme know?
I'm a lot baritone as well, but starting light and adding the power through resonance placement, vowels, and such ensures that you're using a lot of head voice even when belting because you start from a light stretched falsetto and build on top of that. The approach of starting from below and trying to bring the heavy thick voice upwards while belting just caused me to yell and shout and strain.
Here's an example of starting from falsetto and adding just enough to get to full voice that is powerful enough for heavy rock singing while sustainable with plenty of head voice: ruclips.net/user/shorts0IZmWJUJbsY?feature=share
I read that using mixed voice that's a bit airy/breathy is bad for your voice?
Airy / breathy means more air which means vocal chords dry quicker.
That said, mixed voice is not airy or breathy. But starting from a falsetto (which is breathy) light coordination to build mixed voice on top of is great, I find it way easier than trying to build mixed voice from your chest voice

Yeah, ive been working on fixing my habit of darkening my voice. I didnt realize itd cause me problems to do that. I notice the difference when singing ozzy songs…if its too dark, i cant do his little flip run things
The vowel makes a huge difference! That said, the intensity is the key to me

Are you flipping on the word "with"?
Idk what you mean by flipping, it's mixed voice which is characterised by a gradual shift of registers that is not abrupt. My understanding of flipping is when the shift is abrupt. There's some level of head voice engagement since the beginning of the phrase since it's all above my first break. The word hand is where it's above my second break and thus full head voice, with is in between by the vowel EE is always a bit more heady and soft, like the vowel OO, it will always be headier if you're singing it closer to the pure vowel. If I'd sing weth instead of with you'd hear it fuller and less heady
Cheers!
Thanks for the reply! The 2nd break is also what I meant by flipping. When I get to the word "with" I hit my 2nd break. I can sing everything up to that easily with full voice. I assume that singing it softly allows it to go unnoticed.
@@erock8222 I don't think I leave full voice, even the highest notes are head voice in full voice and is connected to my chest voice -- that is the trick
Try the same note with different vowels to check if it's a vowel thing or if it's really a register thing.
If it's a register thing then you should be engaging head voice way before to avoid the flip
The singing light thing forces you to engage head voice earlier as you can't yell your chest voice into those notes, do you can feel and understand how the notes should feel. When you get into full voice, it should feel and have the same register approach as you do when you're singing light
Avoid pulling chest as means to sing higher at full voice, learn how to engage head voice in full voice so you get the same freedom and effortless feel that you do when singing light
Cheers!
