As for the exchange rate regime change, the government surrendered to the demands of the IMF as it was left with forex less than a month worth of imports. If the government has no forex, it can’t import even essential products like fuel and medicine which will trigger an uprising. It is fact that the bank rate of 56 birr for a dollar isn’t realistic as the market is indicating that it hovers around 118. We can’t stay with an artificially overvalued currency as it creates a lot of distortions in all sects of the economy. The government needs to be responsible in financing its budget deficit as money printing from now on will end up in faster depreciation of the local currency and its collapse which leads to dollarization. FDI and increased exports are not preconditions for a floating exchange rate but getting at the correct exchange rate will boost FDI and exports. However, there are other factors much important than monetary policy tools like the security situation and favorable bureaucracy.
