    The origin of this iconic Bidadi thatte idli shop dates back to the 1950s when it came into existence as a tiny village eatery in the middle of nowhere (then), steaming and serving large plates of the acrey idli, an early precursor to the modern day thatte idli. What makes Sri Shiva Darshana Shashi Thatte Idli Hotel the most popular stop on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway today though is the owning family’s commitment to its culinary legacy over five generations. I stop by for a chat and to taste the idli that in a manner of speaking has put Bidadi on the food lovers’ map.
    Thatte Idli
    The thatte idli is pillowy, it is as “soft as air” and breaks under the effect of gravity! Definitely order the butter with the idli, it’s a premium worth paying. The butter seeps through the porous structure of the fragile idli and makes for a bite that melts the moment you place it in your mouth. The chutney delivers a potent chilli punch, the potato saagu is creamy and provides for respite from the spicy yet addictive red chutney. The masala vada makes for a savoury interlude whilst tasting the idli. On the whole, this is an idli that is worth driving 50 kilometres for!
