In this video, I go over everything I know about an awesome vintage GI Joe figures that I picked up as a kid and his eagle sidekick: Freedom! Created for GI Joe's Real American Hero 1984 line, I discuss everything from the Hasbro Spirt action figure to his appearance in the GI Joe Marvel Comics and G.I. Joe cartoons (both Sunbow and DiC), to the packaging art featuring this awesome Native American soldier!

As a kid I never had GI Joe toys but my sister and I loved the show with our favorite part was when Storm Shadow threw a throwing star at Spirit but Freedom caught it in his beak. 2008 was a big year because GI Toys were rereleased so I was able to buy all the figures I missed out on as a kid and was able to share this with my daughter who would later braid her hair wear a blue button shirt with khakis and boots to look like Spirit. My daughter and I would find all the episodes with Spirit and watch them together. I have gladly preordered the GI Joe Classified figure Spirit. Great video!

Still one of my favorites. I have him in storage as I don't have room to display any of mine except for my 100% complete Dreadnok collection. Spirit was my go to guy for tracking down and stopping Firefly from some nefarious plan of his.
Spirit really was a cool figure!
He was, and always will be my absolute FAVORITE EVER. Besides my original VAMP, i lost, sold or ended up loosing a pretty decent collection of GI Joe ARAH to theft. However. Minus one variant i am extremely proud to say i have (just about) every example of Charlie Iron Knife there is! Excellent video!

I also had him as a kid went to the store to get roadblock when my mom saw spirit she said you don't want him I was on the fence between the two and she bought me both which was very rare to get 2 action figures at one time he immediately became my favorite Love the video happy new year

as far as i know i have no native blood running through me. as a kid, i always saw spirit seemed like a neighbor in the area that could be native, down to earth, knowledgable and thats outside the possibilities of super natural or spiritual with him.
what a kid might confuse as relatable.
I'v been told I'm a very small amount native american on my father's side, but I certainly have none of the skills that I thought were so cool that the american Indians had on TV and in the movies.

As a kid, I really liked Spirit. He was an awesome figure. However, I did question the rivalry with Storm Shadow in the cartoons when Snake-Eyes was Storm Shadow's rival in the comic books. But he was cool, so I just let it go.
I liked Spirit, but I thought the rivalry with Storm Shadow was weird too!
My all time favorite GI Joe figure is Airborne.

Freedom has to be one of the most often-found broken accessories in the entire vintage ARAH run. I wish Hama had used him more, but considering the hundreds of characters introduced he had a lot of ground to cover.
Since I still have my original, I didn't know that Freedom was tough to find unbroken...I guess I'd better be particularly careful with him!

i think Dusty and Spirit were flying over Africa to show off how much further along in technology they were. also the impression that they had wealth.

i've always loved the spirit and storm shadow story angle when spirit tells storm shadow your weapon is broken like your honor was broken when you abandoned us?
it raised so many questions about their history.
personally I like it a lot more than storm shadow and snake eyes.
storm shadow and snake eyes is cool but I think it's overrated
there are parts to the snake eyes storm shadow stalker storyline I love so in my head canon it's actually all four of them stocker storm shadow snake eyes and spirit
I read the comics before I saw the cartoon, so I think the comics seemed cannon for me and whenever the cartoon didn't match, it felt like the cartoon was wrong, but I know they were just two separate things and back in the 80s, all Hasbro really cared about was selling action figures, so I'm sure they didn't worry too much if there were conflicting stories! 😀

for me it was a cartoon but my cousins who lived about an hour away it was the comic we would get together one or two times a year and compare notes great memories lots of fun. happy new year buddy

Here's a pretty cool character I did like his arrow shooting gun I thought that was pretty cool and I always tried to keep him and his backpack together for some reason I have two of them I don't know why it's a great story about you being grounded I hope that it wasn't too horrible for you
I survived being grounded and was super excited to get a chance to play with my new Joes when my punishment was over! 😄

@@WeHadThat whenever a sailor screwed something up in the navy, we called them Shipwreck.
Airborne was originally the Joe of Native American descent but I guess he was enough of a caricature or stereotype. Spirit is when I started to fall out of love with G I Joe. Cobra La was the final nail.
I've always felt the whole "Spirit Iron-knife" thing was just to much for his code name. I just call him Spirit.
I agree. I never called him Spirit Iron-Knife as a kid.
that extra weapons pack gear will only confuse me as i become older and go blind. they will make me feel bad. they must be destroyed.
This is one case where the weapons pack gear looks almost as good as the original gear. I didn't feel that way about some of the colors, but in this case, if I didn't have the original pieces, I'd be ok with the weapons pack!
The Cobra Civil War storyline sounds awsome on paper, but you know what was missing from that story...Cobra Freaking Comander! No, that loser Fred 7 dose not count! The Cobra Civil War story from the IDW universe was honestley worse. I feel like the idea for Cobra Civil War kicks ass, but I felt the execusion for the two we've gotten so far was just not there. The Marvel one was just okay, and the one for IDW sucked.
I didn't read the IDW Cobra Civil War, but my favorite parts of the Marvel one didn't involve Cobra at all.

What did you do to get grounded back in 84? I just ask because some people have been grounded for the stupidest reasons.
I was asked to walk my dog and I did, but I was gone too long when I was supposed to be doing homework, so I was sent to bed without dinner. I protested by running away from home for about an hour, so I was grounded and told if I ever ran away again, don't bother coming back. 😆
@@WeHadThat Not the worst reason I've heard, I mean I don't think it was worth sending you to bed with no dinner, I don't have kids but if I do have kids someday I wouldn't denie them acess to food in general. I would just have them eat dinner, and tell them when their done to go straight to work on homework and maybe even help them out. When I was in school my mother always helped me with homework.

I didnt like the face sculpt on the 25th anniversary figure..they made his fa e too harsh looking I feel.
He was lame. You were spoiled. All 5. I was lucky to get one, and by the time we got to toy r us, all the best ones were gone. Lmfao.
