I have two 50mm ai lines (f2 and f1.4) and I've tried them on my D7000. I gone into the camera's menu and added each lens successfully using the Non CPU option. I noticed that the lens does not close down the diaphragm/aperture when I take the picture. This means that I'm only able to shoot at wide open apertures (f2 and f1.4). I do see that camera's on screen aperture correctly corresponds to the aperture on the lens but this is of no use if the lens aperture doesn't close to the chosen aperture. Did I do something wrong in my setup or is this a limitation in using ai lenses on dslrs?
not to nit pick but, the focal length should be set at the max range so the camera can meter the whole focal range. I have a bunch of old non cpu lenses I picked up here and there and after a good clean and inspect I enter the data into the camera and ive got some really nice stuff cheap. I shoot mostly old lenses on my 7200 and 810. I don't have money so ive put some time into this old glass and it has paid off handsomely. they just cant afford to make this stuff like they used to and they still make some d series lenses and in Japan too. the American market is loaded with people that want to just point and shoot without all that messy focusing and aperture but they want fancy and long for show, lazy non-photographers. I find this old gass beautiful. so yeah most are very heavy but ive solved that too. I have new stuff but I'm always grabbing a d series or older135 2.8 or my crazy 200 1.4 or a 35-105 3.5 4.5 and the list goes on. I'm not going to do a inventory here but don't overlook this old glass. its great stuff and I very much enjoy playing with this stuff. nobodys holding a gun to my head to be a photographer. enjoy your 3 day weekend if you in the USA.
Thanks for the valuable info! Your D7000 has the facility for non-CPU lenses but few of my old bodies have that in the spanner menu - not in D100, D200, D2x - but it suddenly must have popped up in the D800 2/3 years back, and I never heard about such a fix until watching your vid! Seems like someone said to Nikon, " Hey, what about all my old Ai-s lenses? They fit but they don't meter! Cant you include a fix in the menus?" And they did! A bit late in the day, but they did it ! But the feature is not found on a cheaper body like the D5200 or D3300. I love my 43-86mm (a late model) and like it more now I know it will meter on my D800 and there's actually a settings for 43mm and 86mm as well as points in-between!
I used to own the old version many years ago. It was not ai. It was lousy so I got rid of it. Two years ago I found one on sale for $30.00. It is the ai version without the push-pull barrel. To my surprise, the lens performs wonderfully. It is now one of my favorites. I take it everywhere I go. I use it on both my manual and digital cameras and I am completely satisfied with the results I get.
I picked up a nice second generation 43-86mm f:3.5 today for $20.00 US. I've yet to even mount it, found your video just looking for reviews on this lens. It'll be interesting for sure and I'm out nothing........
helppppppppp .... I have a Nikkor 105mm f-2.8 pc almost 30 years old ... I can use my d7000 .. and what are those lenses that you can use, and why????????
that lens is one of the biggest pigs nikkor ever made, dont believe me ask around and shoot with it and just look at the ghosts, and also chromatic aberration

My D200 has the non-CPU lens selection.
